One could never pick a top 10, let alone 20. So many great ones! Others mention Bud Powell and McCoy Tyner, but I would add Earl Hines, Fats Waller, Nat Cole, Teddy Wilson, Dave Brubeck, and a few others too. Generations differ in style, but the feeling & technique shine through. So many more deserve mention! Maybe a top 50 could get most of them in.

Bud Powell - one of the genuine geniuses of the piano. Any list without him makes no sense. Ask any serious pianist and he'll be close to the top of every list. Most of the guys on this list idolized Bud.

I think of the great Jimmy Rowles. What are you thinking to make such lists??? See the youtube where Oscar Peterson features Rowles on his TV show. Oscar revered Rowles. Rowles could take the most mundane tune and infuse some indepth chordal progressions to create a masterpiece.

When people understand that music is not about speed and technique, it´s not a horse race, they will value some other pianists like Bill Evans, Clare Fischer, Michel Petruccianni and Makoto Ozone. When I was a teenager I valued too much speed. Oscar Peterson, Liszt and many other were my idols. Not that they aren´t good, this is not the case, but beginners tend to appreciate only speed, technique and showmanship. When you´re growing old, you can really appreciate music the way it should. There´s a saying: "When the musician is beginning to be greater than the music he produces, there is a BIG problem".

Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson (whose playing I don't even like), Herbie Hancock (due to his prolific 1960s solo work, time with Miles and his early proflic 1970s funk work, chart hits, etc), Barry Harris (because he has been and still is the only pure bebop pianist left on the planet), Patrice Rushen, McCoy Tyner for his work with Trane, Hazel Scott, Phineas Newborn, Jr., particularly when he was younger.

I would say that comparing is really not possible for each jazz pianist has his/her own style and listeners have preferences. That being said, a real comparison would be all playing the same piece (arrangements could be different, of course) and playing with ONLY the piano and no other instruments. The one I know who made a couple of albums alone was Bill Evans. His "Alone" album is a masterpiece. His single of "Never Leave Me" is 14 minutes plus of fabulous!

And for the record, George Duke is my absolute musical hero in terms of what I try to embody, but definitely more of a keyboard player, which is what I consider myself too.

People, let's chill out. It's impossible to choose only 10 jazz pianists to represent the best in the history. There's an insane amount of absolute monsters in this instrument. This list is just his personal favourites. I would say you can pick the top 10 most influential list, but that would be a different list. Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Art Tatum, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, they all come to mind when I think of influence. But to say only 10 that are THE best is impossible. Too much greatness.

Since no one did, I'll mention Cecil Taylor. A better example of Ellington's piano playing would be, the album, Money Jungle with Charles Mingus and Max Roach. He never played that way before or after. One of the nice things about this list is that, if you read about these pianists, they will lead you to other pianists.
