Lyle was a musical genius, and an incredible musician. Over the years I was privileged to see him perform numerous times, mostly with the PMG, but also with his own trio. He is sadly missed.
Saw PMG one night in Berkeley. At the close Pat introduced each musician, from least to most prominent, though all appreciated, as the crowd yelled louder and louder for each. Longer and longer pauses between the names as Pat called them out...Steeeeeeve RODby....PAULLllll WERRRTicoooo....and after the longest pause, finally, LYYYullllllllll...MAAAYYYSS! and the crowd was on its feet, screaming for that tall, thin, beautiful guy. Wow, I miss Lyle.
I've seen dozen of PMG videos. I've seen only once PMG live and only once Lye Mays trio, but I've never seen LM smiling at all. In this video he seems to be so happy and satisfied.
I was thinking the same thing. While watching this video I was struck by how happy he seemed, how much he was enjoying the performance. I don't think I had ever seen him smile so much as I have in this video.
I first heard Lyle on the "American Garage" album... still hard to fathom how advanced his musical mind was. Just spectacular talent, he is missed! thanks for posting this.
I just love this live version of the tune 'before you go'. It has such a drama in it. I feel like watching a whole movie listening to this song. it's beautiful.
Lyle Mays: What a musician - what he has of musical imagery and tast. Listen to his solo, what is actually going on on 2.08....?? He is a jazz style in his own right! I would like to see (hear) Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays together again!
No Lyle Mays - No Pat Metheny Group - The Billy Strayhorn of the duo - Really, it could have been the Lyle Mays Group - featuring Pat Metheny - Yup - he was the sine qua non !
I agree. No doubt they both contributed immensely to the sound, but I've always felt that the deep-level composition quality, harmonic and melodic innovation in their music was more Mays than Metheny. No slight to Metheny at all, he's also a genius in his own way, but I can listen to Lyle's solo albums again and again without ever getting tired of it, but for me, Metheny's music that doesn't involve Lyle just isn't as musically interesting to me. Bless his soul, I'm so grateful for this great man's contribution to the experience of being human.
Yes - I saw the group 4 times and each show was magical/ethereal/inspirational. I've seen Pat twice - both times exiting with a sense of satisfaction, having seen some very talented musicians - but not with the sense of having been transported... beyond the venue. Thank God for recordings! @@DanielBarberMusic

I'm so sad at the loss of this amazing composer and keyboard player. Rest in peace, we'll always love you Lyle!
Damn Lyle, we miss you so much. Genius and Master.
I. REALLY miss the Pat Metheny Group. Pat & Lyle had an amazing chemistry some of the best compositions of the last 40 years.
Me, too! I agree with you 100%
Marc Scordato “As Wichita Falls, So Falls Wichita Falls”.
so right...as falls Wichita or Up - unmatched
I see he chose to imbue this tune with some Samba. Loved the original and this rendition too. You are dearly missed Lyle.
The part where Lyle is almost dancing.... priceless. An absolute genius in a class of one. I will never forget him. X
Saw Lyle back in the 70's with Woody Herman and his Orchestra..he was FANTASTIC !
still can't get over that this genius is not with us any longer -we have lost one of the greatest
I second that thought and emotion. What a great talent. At least we can still see and hear his work.

That's classical - something he brought with him whenever he played, it was part of him. Something he gave to Metheny without recourse. Good call, Odd

Miszczunio❤
When will he tour? Can't wait any longer!!
Lyle was an indigo;
7th dimension angel as higher self,
instead of 6th dimensional.
I don;t know what that means, but he was definitely on another level than most of us!
GAFFER!
Who is the bassist?
