I did all four cardinal points a few years ago and had a fuel problem, went to Ardnamurchan Point from Fort William and took the long route around the headland, I got to the point of no return, I had gas, just didn't have enough to get back, luckily I came across a battered looking pump outside a post office which saved the day. The joys of riding around Scotland
Great vid Saffy, and a huge thankyou for feeding some of our starving hordes. You could have quite safely drunk straight out of that wee burn unless some tourist had shit nearby.
🥰 it took a lot of practise to be more "letting go' and "less worry" ahahah it helps when you start touring because it is inevitable that things will go wrong, it really helps you to lose up a little bit!
Also - I just finished the NC500 last week. I had multiple stops to change out of light gloves into Goretex gloves. So many times when I stopped, a passing local would stop their car to check if I was OK. Absolutely amazing people up there.

Hi Saffy, I very much sympathise with you about the midges in Scotland . I grew up in Scotland and never had any problems with midges. But , in 1981, I moved south to England. Then in the early 2000's I decided to do a motorbike tour in parts of Scotland I hadn't been to for a long time. It wasn't until I was riding my bike through Glen Coe that I found out I was no longer immune to the midges. Luckily, a campsite that I decided to stop at overnight had a small shop on site. Inside the shop was a couple of shelves stocked with AVON Skin So Soft spray. The proprietor explained that this particular AVON product contained some ingredient which kept midges and other bothersome insects at bay. I bought some and found it to be very effective at keeping the little bitey things at bay, so much so, it is still part of my camping kit when I go touring on my bike or even going on long countryside walks. I would highly recommend you try this particular product as part of your camping gear in future. By the way, I am most definitely not an Avon rep.
Now imagine a battery-powered vehicle, and there are more and more of them because they are pushing the famous green agenda. Going on an adventure with an electric vehicle? Hard.
Any water coming down from the hills is probably better than anything that comes out of your tap at home. I used to do a lot of hillwalking and never thought twice about drinking out of a stream.

Hi saffy , you were lucky just making the petrol station, I have run out twice in Scotland many years ago but nice people helped me out, learnt my lesson now. @SaffySprocket that was a good idea saffy, I just fill up each time I see a petrol station, also I do take a lot of clothes and foot pump, tools, engine oil etc etc, some people at the b&b thought I had a car, I think the only place I could carry a petrol can would be round my neck probably not a good idea although I would have good neck muscles. Take care of yourself, Best wishes Roy.
Just got back from Scotland... So beautiful even if its raining... Loving your videos. Furthest I got was Fort William... But I was on a Honda monkeybike with all camping gear... The weather turned bad so I had to head home... All the way back from Scotland... 100% heavy rain. yellow weather warnings... I was worried about fuel because I only have 2.5 litres tank... So took a 2.5 and 1.5 litre spare fuel on a rack on the front... Is a worry not finding jungle juice lol.. Never used my life straw but at least I had it lol... Keep up the videos❤❤❤
Thanks Saffy, I love your optimism even though things sometimes seem to be out to get you (midges for example) I hope the ride was as good as it looked in places lol. :>)
Another good video from yourself. a couple of things, if the water tastes sweet, stop drinking it, there's probably a dead animal upstream. and when you're laying down enjoying the midge free time (try smidge, it works well), don't forget to check yourself for ticks afterwards!
I think you should change your channel name to Calamity Jane rides again 😂😉😉. I would say above anything keep your bedding dry and your petrol tank full. I’m totally guilty of desperately looking for fuel myself. Love your videos, your enthusiasm and spark could brighten anyone’s day. Stay safe, have fun. 😊
A gas lantern turned down low will kill any midges that get in the tent with you at bedtime in about ten minutes. You’re right the CO2 attracts them and the flame finishes them off. Also recommend jungle formula or even skin so soft from the home shopping brand that slips my mind currently. I use a rain suit for bad weather as riding gear is so difficult to dry overnight when camping.
Dear Safron. You realy should give yourself a much greater time window for these trips. They are fantastic. The NC500 realistically should be given a whole week. Friday to Sunday in 10 days time. Relax, do the extra bits, take your time, chill. Always top up fuel at every opportunity.

The water in the north west is the cleanest in Europe. Distilled from the Atlantic, it falls in copious amounts and runs off just as quickly, with no time to fester. Midges love CO2, heat and black clothing. Autan mosquito spray stops them biting. 3mph wind (or walking ) is too fast for them. Take more time to do the NC500. Even two weeks is too short to be able to drink in the varied and spectacular scenery. And take little detours, time to stroll on the beach, climb a hill, go see a waterfall. Stay in one place for another night if it feels good, and check the rain radar app forecast regularly. Skin So Soft by Avon keeps the midges off you, even the English SAS use it when in jungles. It works I've tried it in Scotland and other places around the world
Only works for a minority. And the SAS is supposed to be part of the British army and not the English army, though you might be right,at one level. Autan bug spray worked for me yesterday in Sligachan on the Isle of Skye. Check the midge reports from there!
This stuff used to be amazing mate! However, they changed the formula and now it doesn’t work 😂 So people buy it expecting miracles and they just turn themselves into a well moisturised meal, ready to be scranned.
next time you rough it up that way, to keep the biting midges away, I highly suggest you get yourself some "Skin so soft by Avon" I swear by this, trust me you will appreciate it next time. Also a headnet brimmed hat that folds up in a pocket, for when your need to pack stuff away.
Hi Saffy, you sure know how to create a cliff hanger with your planning ha-ha, but joking apart isn't Scotland magical, I did the NC500 anti clockwise. Oh those pesky midges I used what the Commandoes use when on maneuverers it is made by Avon cosmetics called, Skin-so-soft, it's technically a moisturising oil but the midges hate the smell, better I think than smothering yourself in chemicals like Deet based repellents. Thank you.
I got absolutely eaten alive , had to pack up in record breaking time then decided to put on my lid and burn it off to get away from the midges , then find that evening I’ve been bitten everywhere , inside my lid ,ankles , wrists , where my trousers and jacket meet , was horrible
@@SaffySprocket to stop the itching and scratching once bitten heat a metal spoon in your stove then put it over the sting , best method is just heat the tip for a few seconds then move over the bite towards the tip till it’s as hot as you can handle with out actually burning yourself

❤
🥰🥰🥰
Your a bit of a disaster at times but still enjoy your videos. Nc500 is great, I will be doing it again myself next year.
Cb 500 x !! NC is 750cm3
@vlaho1967 ...... 🤔 not what I was talking about. Maybe I should have written it more clearly, I guess 🤷♂️
Shame that life straw doesn't turn water into petrol😂.when in scotland if you see a petrol station ,fill up even if its a gallon.❤
I swear 😭😂😭😂😭😂😭
Saffy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hey
Hi 👋☺️
Its surprising how far you can go with flashing fuel light, hopefully you remembered how far you got, for next time 😂
Maybe at some point the one Tshirt becomes so rank that even the midgies don't want anything to do with you?
😂😂😂 one can dream
Ah you haven’t been bitten by the ticks yet 😂😂😂😂
🥰🥰🥰
Dead sheep up the valley in that brook 😢
🌹👌
🥰
next time you rough it up that way, to keep the biting midges away, I highly suggest you get yourself some "Skin so soft by Avon" I swear by this, trust me you will appreciate it next time. Also a headnet brimmed hat that folds up in a pocket, for when your need to pack stuff away.
A few people have said this!!!
@@SaffySprocket I absolutely swear by it, done the NC500 a few times, and that stuff is amazing
Thank you.
Thats a CB500X !
The best kind of bike 💅
Your always laughing but remember just to stop take a rest and look around. Its not a race.Enjoy it.
Couldn't agree more!
I got absolutely eaten alive , had to pack up in record breaking time then decided to put on my lid and burn it off to get away from the midges , then find that evening I’ve been bitten everywhere , inside my lid ,ankles , wrists , where my trousers and jacket meet , was horrible
Apparently they bite tall men the most (it's a legit study apparently 😂)
@@SaffySprocket to stop the itching and scratching once bitten heat a metal spoon in your stove then put it over the sting , best method is just heat the tip for a few seconds then move over the bite towards the tip till it’s as hot as you can handle with out actually burning yourself
Sunday specials with swearing Saffy Sprocket.
Saffy lol, you seem to be pushing yourself too hard with not enough time to do it!
(I hope this signing off premiere is a contract signing to do permanent travel vlogs)
Maybe I should push it further 😸
Another fun day……”well, let’s see what’s in my bag……….no shirts, no pants, one sock, 6 copies of National Geographic magazine………and…….a……tennis………ball……………….huh……………GOOD TO GO !!! 😁
🤣🤣🤣 glad I'm not the only one
Can I ask where you get your drone footage from? I'm assuming you don't film it yourself and instead it's purchased from a library or similar.
Easy to forget 😅
@@SaffySprocket What does that mean, easy to forget? 🤔
😭😂 I replied to the wrong comment, I'm useless 😂😂😂 sorry
@@SaffySprocket No problems, so may I ask where you get your drone footage from?
What month did you go in and week

I think that's a good idea!

Open a jar of vics or 2 and place in the tent, pop olbus oil on yr clothing. Bugs mozzies an vampire midges flys spiders hate it as it numbs there senses an temp blindness. Pop olbus round yr neck hands ankles at night or day. Stay safe...

That doesn’t look like fun to me.
Saffy, please consider not to put music in when your talking.. especially when your quoting a very nice poem... could not make out what you were saying and I'd much rather be able to hear you, not that noise.. thank you. Your great videos dont need music....
Noted
Hiya Saffy I'm really enjoying your videos BUT I have to say Your VIP sticker on your screen is in a bad place and hides lots of the view, It's really annoying.
I have removed it 😅 but not until after NC500
