The way this conversation transitioned form both men being completely calm and professional, to both of them screaming at each other was just phenomenal...
Crimson Tide (1995) was really an outstanding film. Very dramatic, excellent cast, and two great actors at the top of their game (Hackman and Washington) really going at it. Brilliant and intelligent storyline also. One of the great submarine films (and films of any genre).
Indeed..the US NAVY however hated it because of obvious reasons...1) it gives completely wrong picture of how "fail-safe" the nuclear protocol is and 2) mutiny aboard US nuclear sub, which puts the whole command chain and the professionality of US submarine crew and commanders in question But one must understand it was never meant to be realistic, it was meant to be interesting and exciting thriller and in that it succeeded 110%
I was in the navy when this came out. I think this movie moved me more than a civilian who is watching it. The acting was amazing and so was the music and Visuals.
I love though how he says "Fuck you" to XO and that he was only doing what was right under regulations ... and yet ends up being XO's staunchest ally, during the double / triple mutinies.
Under naval protocols, launching nuclear weapons required a unanimous agreement between the captain and the XO after confirming the launch orders from the President. The XO has the right to disagree and the captain has no authority to order him to agree. Launching nuclear weapons is a very serious matter and one wrong move could result a nuclear holocaust. The captain is wrong for trying to bypass the protocol by having the XO be replaced by another. That gives the XO an authority to relive the captain and assumed command.
@@MrLantean Interesting that in this depiction there was no protocol on the interpretation of a garbled or inauthenticated message received subsequent to an authenticated launch order.
@@crimony3054 That is the whole point of the movie plot. The captain immediately chooses to ignore it and regards it as unimportant while the XO requests him to reconsider. Communication is one of the most important aspects in any military operation. The main priority is to reestablish communication and retrieve the rest of the incomplete message. The captain chooses to continue the launch on grounds that it is a direct order of the US President that has been authenticated. He is too haste in deciding to ignore the incomplete message without ever considering that the current order may be no longer valid. That's why the XO is forced to use his executive right not to agree with the captain regarding the launch of nuclear weapons.
Yes. I sympathize with the captain's notion that they must follow the last complete order they got and that they can not be sure the redundant submarines will be able to do their job if they don't act, but it is obvious that having the XO repeating the order is not just a formality and relieving the XO is just an attempt to circumvent that demand. Funnily enough, Star Trek has a similar procedure: the self-destruction functionality demands the capitain and other high-ranking officers to input their codes.
@@crimony3054I believe the captain said that in the absence of valid orders(since the orders were incomplete due to the attack) at hand, the previous order are to be followed..
The sheer gall of the captain to demand that his XO give his assent to the nuclear launch or that he will relieve him and get a new XO who will is just insane. The entire purpose of having the two-person approval process is so that the captain CAN'T do exactly that!

Also interesting to note how Denzel had to slow the pace of his lines towards the end of that exchange, he should have finished around the same time as Hackman but he spoke his part too fast, he still ended up finishing well before Hackman.

What a great pair of actors in this movie.
This is good acting by both of these gentlemen.

Poor COB. Mom and Dad are fighting again and he must take sides.

To be fai, the XO is right. There is a reason why his assent is required. Otherwise, they would only need the captain's order.

I always found funny how one of the Lieutenats was called ZIMMER, knowing who the composer of the score is...
One of the best movies, next to a Few Good Men. NAVY movies are the best so far
Navy SEALs with Charlie Sheen is my guilty pleasure as far as military films.

For a long time I thought "COB" was actually that guy's last name. Same with "WEPPS" for Viggo Mortenson's character.
I thought so too hmmm
COB = Chief of the boat, but what stands WEPPS for?

Me too, I thought for a name like Wepps that's convenient that he's in charge of weapons...ohhh...I see.
Plus those are their names in the credits so that doesn't offer much help.
Great acting by both.
Meanwhile Cobb is standing there like what is this s**tshow.
