    You have perfect timing on this video! I have 4 pots of tiny seedlings that look like they're covered in a green algae. They've been sealed in ziploc baggies for 90 days, and honestly, they look stunted for their age. I'm not sure if that's due to genetics or the algae/slime. I'm hoping it goes away after I open the baggies and air the soil out a bit.
    Like yours, I pasteurized my soil and I even wiped my containers with alcohol. I did notice I mainly have this problem with mixes containing soil, and that the more coco coir I use in the mix, the less mold I have. I'm afraid I can't remember if you're using coir in any of your mixes or not. But so far it has worked really well for the seeds I tried it on. I have a short video of a proud papa showing off a pot full of super healthy looking seedlings that were germinated in coco coir. .I moved them outside and I'm trying to harden them off. They're so big I wonder if they're already overcrowded and I should repot them?

    Hi Lynn. I've learned the hard way that the best way to treat fungus is to never get it in the first place (I lost a lot of seedlings last year). The fungal spores are on the seed coat itself. What I do now is always cover the top of the pot with some gritty sand. Fungi can't really spread over mineral components.

    In AZ cactus like the sajuaro, grow under 'nurse' trees which protect them from mold and fungus. I had a beautiful cereus in my front yard that was suffering from a fungus. I took some bark and seed pods from a mesquite(nurse) tree and made a tea out of it, put it in a sprayer and sprayed Fred(my name for the cactus) with it. I did this daily for a week and the fungus disappeared and Fred was very happy. Turns out mesquite trees have anti-fungal and antimicrobial properties. Mesquite tea made from the beans cures pink eye, conjunctavitis over night. Seriously, over night. My sons school nurse asked how I cured pink eye so fast. I told her and she was so excited about it, but due to school rules, she couldn't share the information. So sad.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  5 років тому

      Hi Justin :-D if the Algae is taking over the seedlings, you would be best to unzip the bags and very gently scrape off as much of the algae as you can, I have had this problem too especially under the grow lights as it encourages faster growth especially for moss and algae LOL and i have had to unzip the bags and gently scrape off as much as i can and then I sprinkle sharp Horticultural sand onto the top of the soil and this prevents the moss or algae coming back, you could also use very very fine grit too if you can get very fine grit, but sharp horticultural sand works well, i have now decided to use sand on the top of my seed sowing pots on top of the soil all the time now, XXXXX

    I am growing some Saguaro seeds. They germinated, mold started to grow, and I was told to uncover the top so the mold can go away and transplant to a bigger pot because they were all clumped in a tiny space. Am I supposed to put the pot in something again like a bag? They are out of humidity now and are not thriving.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  3 роки тому +1

      Hi there, so sorry to hear you have had problems with your Saguaro seeds, I would place them inside another bag, but because they have come out of the cover beforehand, I would pierce some holes in the new bag to allow air flow into the bag, if you see mold reappear again you can use 3% Hydrogen peroxide diluted with water at a mix of 1 tablespoon of 3% Hydrogen peroxide to a cup (250ml) of water and put into a spray bottle and spray the whole of the soil to kill any mold or fungus, good luck with your seedlings and have a wonderful Wednesday today XXXX

    Going to have nightmares about fungus now : ) I didn't know there was one that could kill in hours! I've tried opening the bag and using sterile tweezers to 'scoop' it away and afterwards dusted the soil and sometimes the seedlings with cinnamon. They have all survived this, but I will just use a water spritz next time, it looks less aggressive : ) My seed sowing is so much more 'accident' free though since I use the baggy method. • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  3 роки тому

      Hi there :-D So sorry to hear you have bugs on the soil of your cactus seedlings, you may be best to treat the soil with a soil drench of Neem oil as spraying the seedlings will not be enough, its best to soil drench the whole compost with Neem oil, or use a soil insecticide especially for soil pests, a soil systemic insecticide may be best to use, good luck with your seedlings Sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic weekend ahead XXXX

    I just bought a cactus online, & it arrived with fluffy white mould all over it. I wanted to try to treat the cactus, before throwing it away. The mould keeps coming back. Do you have any suggestions, on whether the cactus can be saved or not? & If so, how? Thank you.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  3 роки тому

      Hi there, the good news is a lot of white mold on the soil can be harmless but you can also treat it with sprinkling cinnamon powder onto the soil or by spraying the top of the soil with 5ml of 3% Hydrogen peroxide mixed with 20ml of water, but if the cactus is already in damp soil then you may be best to remove the cactus completely from the pot and throw away the soil it was in, and then re pot it up again in new totally dry cactus soil, leave the cactus unwatered until mid to late March before watering again, thanks so much for watching and good luck with your cactus XXXX

      The cactus was covered in white mould, not the soil. I sprayed it with soapy water, & the mould hasn't come back. Most of the fluffy mould has gone. Now, there are just tiny white dots remaining. So, I will spray the cactus once more, then, I will re-pot it into well draining soil.

    What about fungus on a grown plant not a seed? The video said cactus I figured that was included

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 роки тому

      Hi Amber :-D you can spray the white fungus with rubbing alcohol also called isopropyl alcohol or a fungicide gardening spray, but I would remove your plant out of the pot first to check that the plant is not rotting from the base, if it is then make an emergency cut and sprinkle with either sulphur powder or pure cinnamon powder as Rooting powder is not as effective, and if its a cactus then I would leave the whole cutting to fully dry for at least 3 weeks before planting up as a cutting in dry very gritty cactus soil, but if there are no signs of rot then I would spray the whole cactus with the alcohol or fungicide and I would also recommend that you also change the whole of the soil in the pot too, and leave the cactus unpotted for at least 10 days before potting up into dry very gritty well draining cactus soil, good luck with your cactus and thanks so much for watching XXXX

      YoDawg 83 we were thinking alike. I used hydrogen peroxide 3% with 100% success. Mold is eradicated and seedlings look well. Im Concerned that if I did more than one treatment the seedlings would be damaged. As of now, another treatment doesn’t seem necessary. I’m not sure that plain water would be effective, but if this happens again I plan to try it out.
