This is such an indispensable tip for starting anything from seed. You can sterilize your growth medium as much as you want, but it's difficult to stop airborne fungi from colonizing the top of your soil, which is usually the cause of wispy white mold on the top of seedling cells. Hydrogen peroxide not only kills the fungus almost immediately, it aerates the soil by decomposing into water and oxygen and also softens seed coats, promoting faster germination. It can be reapplied weekly until transplantation, at which point the plants will be large enough that the fungus is harmless to them.

Thank you so much William :-D the Hydrogen peroxide really is so good for keeping the fungus off the soil and seedlings, and is so good for aerating the soil too, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX

We don't have to worry too much about chemicals on the water since we are on a well. We just have very hard water because it courses through limestone. I am very glad you showed me this with the mold issues. The seedlings I started from Ana had mold form on the soil after they were growing well on their way. I sprayed with neem but it came back. Seedlings are fine. But I've had to grow them without cover. I like to keep them covered for at least a year. I will try this method !! Thanks for this information Lyn!!! From Morris park in the Ozarks, to across the Emerald Isle, have a great day guys!!!! Peace,Love,Plants!!!✌💖🌵🌸🌿🌷🌳💐🌲🌹🌴🌻

Thats wonderful you guys have well water and you dont have to worry about the chemicals in the water, when we lived at our other house in the south of Ireland we had well water, it was lovely to drink but high in lime for most of the plants, luckily we rarely had to worry about running out of rainwater in Ireland haha :-D thats brilliant you saved your seedlings from Ana's seeds with the Neem, the fungus is annoying on young seedlings and although I always sterilise the soil with the microwave I still sometimes see fungus appear, the hydrogen peroxide works a treat at killing the fungus and doesn't harm the tiny seedlings at all, thanks so much Clyde for your wonderful friendship and amazing comment and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you and beautiful Deb and all the pets and plants lots of love and happiness and PEACE, LOVE, PLANTS and PLANT POWER to Morris Park in the Ozarks for a terrific Tuesday today XXXXX

Hi Lyn! Thank you for this video! I have used hydrogen peroxide on my mature cactus plants to treat fungus with great success. This video will no doubt be of great benefit to most growers at this time of year, many of whom are sowing last year's seeds and are looking for new successful ways to combat unwanted colonisers.
I'm guessing the concentration of the solution at 3% dilute, is optimum strength to chemically sterilise the top soil, but safeguard the extremely vulnerable emerging seedlings.
The last batch of cacti I sowed was 2 years ago, mostly Mexican rarities, (Strombo's, Geohintonia, and Ortego's). Those I grew in 70% sharp sand and I think the rapid drying kept many evil invaders at bay; however not all cactus like or will germinate in sandy soil, and so prefer a medium with abit more humus like these here.
To reduce losses once germinated, it is vital we keep the soil sterile until the cactus is at least half a centimeter in size.
Briefly in other news, I am delighted to have received my new Browningia Candelaris columnar into the greenhouse. This ultra xerophytic Chilean native has been on my list for a very long time. I don't know why but Browningia's are hard to come by and are seldom grown much. These too I had a go at sowing a few years back, but sadly had no joy and none of them took or germinated.

Great video Lyn, I’ll definitely get some hydrogen peroxide as I’ve noticed in one of my Haworthia seedling pots there’s a bit of green slime mould growing, not sure if that can harm the seedlings but I’d rather not risk it, a lot of moulds and fungus shouldn’t be trusted haha. So happy you enjoyed the video Daz :-D the hydrogen peroxide has worked a treat and no harm to the seedlings, I notice with my grow lights that the green slime mold is much more common to see on my seedlings too now, luckily I think the green algae like mold is mostly harmless but is annoying as it makes it harder to see the little seedlings, a lot of growers recommend using the hydrogen peroxide at a higher strength but I find the 1 tablespoon of H.P per cup of water does the trick, beautiful weather here today, thanks so much Daz for your wonderful friendship and amazing comment and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you and beautiful Edith lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to England and Singapore for a terrific afternoon and evening ahead XXXXX

Happy Paddy's day to the both of you! Another interesting how to video that explains all the steps and measurements : ) I love the details! I'm going to try to find some hydrogen peroxide for sure. I've always been a bit scared of it, thought of it as a very harsh chemical but it seems like I need to change my ideas. I'd love to give it a try for fungus gnats, do you then use it as a soil drench or do you just spray the surface? Best wishes from Dublin Xx

    • @desertplantsofavalon

Happy Belated Paddy's day Nathalie :-D I hope you had a wonderful day, so happy you enjoyed the video, the Hydrogen peroxide works so well at getting rid of the fungus gnats and I water it into the soil on adult plants and cacti and succulents to get rid of them, but with very young seedlings I spray it onto the soil just enough to soak the very top of the surface of the soil, and it does the trick, you can hear the fizzing noise when it goes onto the soil, I had to use it on fungus flies on my epiphyllum seedlings and a good spray onto the soil knocked them all out for good, and no harm to the seedlings at all, thanks so much Nathalie for your wonderful friendship and amazing comment and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from Belfast to Dublin for a terrific Thursday afternoon XXXX
