He eventually had a drug-induced psychotic break and was out of the music business for years, but he is occasionally performing and doing interviews now. They have dozens of outstanding songs from as early as 1962. My favorites are Don't Worry, Baby; Help Me Rhonda; Fun, Fun, Fun; and of course, God Only Knows and Wouldn't It Be Nice from Pet Sounds. As others mentioned, they had a friendly artistic rivalry with The Beatles, who give a tribute to them in Back in the USSR.

Good old West Coast Beach music. You could spend weeks in their catalog. There are a ton of groups to check into for this genre. I'd recommend Jan and Dean to start. You should also checkout Wipeout by the Surfaris
While I didn't grow up in the era it came out in I remember Wipe Out fondly. Hearing it on the radio starting off with the laugh and then saying Wipe Out, setting the pace of the song with the drums. Good stuff indeed. :)
We went to the beach 1 day and got a real treat! The Beach Boys was there performing. My daughter was 5 at the time. She's 36 now. She said it's 1 of her favorite memories.
It opened the door to Day in the Life and Bohemian Rhapsody. Before this song, no one in pop music dared mix time signatures, key changes, strange harmonies and sound effects. Changed our lives, kids.
3 were brothers, and one their cousin, and they'd been singing together for half their lives by this point. Thats how you get such tight harmonies. The rest of it is the sheer, unadulterated musical genious of Brian Wilson.
The Beach Boys first recorded in late 1961. There ages then were 12-19 with three brothers, a cousin and friend. They were one of the first " Garage Bands ". There leader, Brian Wilson, is a very talented fellow who wrote and produced most of their music. They were a top group before the Beatles hit and were one of the few that not only survived the British Invasion but pushed and challenged the Beatles. Sadly Brian suffered for decades with misdiagnosed mental issues and received improper care. He survived and later in his life created some wonderful music as a solo artist . Two Beach Boy songs I would suggest are " Why Do Fools Fall In Love " and "Sail On Sailor". They are from different eras.
This song is considered one of the most important rock songs ever because of the intricacies, the layering, the use of the theremin, the harmonies...Brian Wilson is a GENIUS. You should read up on their history, it''s fascinating.
Oh my favourite beach Boys track of all time. When I was 10 I got to see them at the Coventry Theatre in the UK. My older sister was going with a friend, but the friend fell ill with the flu and cancelled last minute! A golden break for me! Happy days!!!

A "boy band" is a group of good looking guys with decent voices put together to sing other people's music... looking the part is a huge factor here. The Monkees is kind of a boy band (except older), but the Beach Boys and Beatles were super talented individuals who created their own music. And the fireman hats were an era when Brian Wilson was high AF on drugs and turned his living into a beach with his piano and would play with his fireman hat on. LOL
And just think, Brian Wilson showed signs of schizophrenic effective disorder, hearing auditory voices two years before Pet Sounds. And yet accomplished this music. Dude was a massive musical genius.
This song and this group changed music history forever. There are several great movies/documentaries about them and worth watching. Since you're into music production, this would be right up your alley. Phil Spector (husband of Ronnie Spector of the Ronettes and convicted of murder) was a huge influence in Brian's studio use. And Wilson Phillips is another group to check out... the daughters of Brian Wilson (genius behind the Beach Boys) and the daughter of John/Michelle Phillips from the Mamas & Papas. The girls grew up together as childhood friends and had multiple #1 hits.
Basically, Paul McCartney said The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" inspired him to do the first concept albumn with John Lennon "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
Great reaction. The Beach Boys were California. Brian Wilson was The Beach Boys. Leon Russell, Paul McCartney, Elton John and Billy Joel called Brian Wilson a genius. Instrumental track was provided by the Wrecking Crew. RIP Carl .
Those were all later Beach Boy hits. I love them too. The early stuff was all surfing and hot rod cars. I love 409, Little Deuce Coupe, and my all time favorite was and is In My Room. The harmonies on that song were insane. I love it when Brian Wilson's daughters and Michelle Phillip's daughter who are collectively known as Wilson Phillips, have done In My Room and it is awesome. Early Beach Boys is circa 1962ish. Love Jan and Dean who were friends of theirs as well. The Beatles were influenced by the Beach Boys and vice verse.
I read a lot of the comments but didn't see any mention of Mike Wilson's use of the Theramin in this song, an electronic device that was used in many horror movies dating back to the 1930's
Good observation about “white Motown”. Brian Wilson wrote the music and also was their producer and he was picking up all the vibrations in the music world including Motown and of course the Beatles. He was trying to upstage them with every move he made. Good Vibrations was his reply to the Beatles album Rubber Soul and they “replied” with the Sgt Pepper album. Brian wanted to upstage that and started working on the Smile album but was under such pressure that he had a nervous breakdown (combined with some substance issues), one he never really recovered from. The Smile album got abandoned but eventually he faced all his fears and anxieties about it and with the help of the band The Wondermints sort of finished it as a Brian Wilson album and even performed it live. There is an awesome documentary about it that tells this whole story in detail.
I strongly second the recommendations of several commenters to check out the “Wrecking Crew” and the documentary about the amazing group of LA session musicians who played the music on this track and dozens of hit songs from the 1960’s. They were an amazing group of musicians, the talent of which is unlikely to be duplicated.
I'm a white female, grew up in Detroit in the 60s, and got into music of that era at the age of 8 when the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan. But I could also sing along word for word on anything by the Supremes, Aretha, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye & Tammy Terelle, and The Temptations, as well as The Beach Boys and The Monkees. The music of the 60s was awesome. I loved it all!
My older sister loved The Beach Boys so I did too 😁they have too many great songs too name but one of them that I love is “Fun Fun Fun” actually they were a real band playing real instruments 😂 the term “boy bands is somewhat of a misnomer. What I really love about them is the super tight harmonies! Great reaction BP more please❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
A lot of the Motown (post-Detroit) and Beach Boys session musicians were the same in Los Angeles. So a lot of the backing tracks sound similar-all genius level musicians.
Took Brian' s spot on tour because Brian had issues on stage. But Glen probably played on more studio tracks than the band itself, besides the singing, of course.
I used to play this at car audio competitions back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. People looked at me weird for sure, until around the mark of 9:35 in this video. That bass line is subtle over phone, computer, and TV speakers. But, in a car with 4 x tweeters, 4 x 5.25’s, 4 x 6.5’s, 4 x 10’s all Boston Acoustic pro series, ~ 2,800 watts of old school Phoenix Gold power from 2 x MPS 2500’s and 1 x Route 66 anniversary edition (replaced an original Bandit with this), 30 band Phoenix Gold EQ, Phoenix Gold “the balancing act”, Alpine Cd player and changer, 3 x 1 farad stiffening capacitors, that hit 143.9 SPL on it’s best day at an IASCA invitational event in 94’….they understood why I played it. There’s actually a lot of great bass notes in many rock songs, you just have to know which ones. One of the best is this one, but the best is probably Guns and Roses “My Michelle”.
Brian WIlson the writer and singer is considered a modern day Beethoven. In no way a boy band. Their album pet sounds inspired even the Beatles. Brian Wilson is a living legend absolute genius.
Definitely do some more Beach Boys! So much good music in their catalog! "I Get Around", "Heroes and Villains", "California Dreamin'", "Kokomo", "In My Room", "Help Me Rhonda", "Little Deuce Coup", "Surfin' Safari", "California Girls", just a treasure trove of timeless classics that you won't want to forget! We're talking every summer playlist, every beach or poolside playlist, they just hit!
Boy bands were generally not actual groups, they were put together by a record producer and had to audition for their part in the band. Therefore, the Beatles weren't a boy band but the Monkees were. The Beach Boys originally consisted of three brothers, Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, and their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine. The Wilson brothers' father was the band's manager and Brian wrote most of the music.
Brian Wilson the lead singer who wrote the majority of the songs, he suffered from a condition known as schizoaffective disorder. This would create auditory hallucinations. While the Beach Boys were in Japan touring, Wilson struggling with his condition, stayed in Florida, while alone he experimented with different sounds and wrote the track "Good Vibrations". He loved boating, the only place that made him feel safe. Paul McCartney stated the following, "My Favorite album, "Pet Sounds" by the Beach Boys, that was the album that flipped me, and still is one of my favorite albums of all time".
California in the 60s and 70s, When the state‘s population was 15 million. I lived in Ventura. Farmland as far as you could see. From the mountains to the ocean. As a child I would eat from the fields all day went bicycle riding. Oranges, tangerines, avocados, strawberries, corn….. The farmers didn’t care about a child grabbing a snack. You could go to the beach and do whatever you want to. Bonfires, dirt bikes, fireworks…. There was nobody around for miles. It was heaven on earth that no one will ever be able to experience again. The population of my hometown was 40,000… now it’s 240,000.
Same here. My family was more coastal. Almost beach front property. However, head east about 3 miles and it was all fields and farmland. We would go over to the end of the next town over and visit family friends, it was all fields and canyons that the older kids (10+) were allowed to roam freely in until meal time. There was an abundance of palm and fruit trees. Most neighbors had no issue with kids picking berries, or an assortment of fruits pomegranates, apricots, nectarines, oranges, apples, lemons (yes, we made lemonade/stands). We picked fruit often on our way to school for a breakfast treat. I still have a palm, orange and avocado tree, other neighbors have assorted fruit trees. I just checked the 1960 population census for my town. About 17k. It is currently less than 27k. Not bad but it can get congested due to out of towner traffic which was not an issue when I was a kid/young adult. I remember road trips up the coast, camping all over the state, etc. Such beauty. I remember the drive from San Diego to Disneyland in Anaheim when there was nothing but fields between the two. Oh, how things have changed. But one thing does remain the natural wonder and beauty which is easy to find. I can be in the mountains in an hour, desert within a few hours, lakes, skiing, etc. I’m not going anywhere, lol.
The Beach Boys has a crazy history, that can't be type entirely in the comments. In a cliff notes summary. It went from situation similar to The Jackson 5 intense origins. Brian Wilson acted as writer and composer behind the bands catalog But unlike a large percentage of bands he wasn't lead vocal Brian play guitar in the band.
The Beach Boys formed in 1961. Being born in 1960 and having a sister 8 years older, I grew up on their music. Please react to more songs from The Beach Boys. There are too many songs to list them all. A few of their songs are "I Get Around", "Don't Worry Baby", "California Girls", "Help Me Rhonda", "Little Deuce Coupe", "Little St. Nick", and their last top 40 hit released in 1988 "Kokomo".
Surfer music was a natural evolutionary step up from the folk music that was the "Big Thing" in the early 60s - The New Christy Minstrels," "The Chad Mitchell Trio," "The Kingston Trio" were inspirational, and even gave their start to musicians such as John Denver and Dylan But the natural genius and visionary that was Brian Wilson couldn't be held back, and his innovations and creativity in combining and mixing new sounds led the way for many, if not most of the bands that would follow. A lot of their songs just sounded fun, but the technical content was something else. BP - have fun looking into this. You might also have fun with some of the other more folk singers - Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Donovan and Joan Baez to name but a few.
The idea came to Brian Wilson when his Mother described a dog's negative reaction to someone. She said that a dog can tell if you have Good Vibrations or not.
I grew up in CA. Born in the Bay Area, I loved CA and thought it was a great place to grow-up. I couldn;t live there now ,but I have such great childhood memories of what it was then. I've never seen this video with this song before though. They were the kings of the surf sound and beach mentality. You should do some Jan And Dean too.
You did not comment on the instruments, but that weird whistling one at the beginning and end is called a theramin. It's the same thing that was used in the original Capt Kirk-Spock Star Trek TV theme song. Jimmy Page plays it on some Led Zeppelin songs too.
I would consider some of the 50's Doo Wop groups some of first Boy Bands. Frankie and the Teenagers were all very young, probably all still in High School when they started. Danny and the Juniors also come to mind.
My uncles were the dudes tuning cars and making boards in So-Cal. My mom was a cute tom-boy who became a beach babe! The best folks you will ever meet!
Pet Sounds CAUSED The Beatles to create: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (THE MOST influential and widely-admired (and copied) album OF ALL TIME!)!
I love this music.... it's my mother's generation...or before my birth. But we always danced to " her tunes" in the living room..childhood memories are amazing, wonderful RIP MOTHER I MISS YA❤
I'd love for you to do more Beach Boys stuff. They had some brilliant vocals, beautiful songwriting, and for the time, some of the most advanced recording techniques that are still in use today. They are my favorite group from the 60s, hands down. Songwriting, arranging, mixing, performance, feel....they had it all.
It was 1966, the radio on the way home from school….I lived in a beach town in San Diego. My car was filled with my girlfriends…while in class they played it over and over on the radio…same in car. This just blew our minds….we were a surfing high school…and my gosh it was hot. This was after Surfin, Surfing USA.
If you want to learn more about surf rock, The Beach Boys are the greatest band, but the inventor of the sound is Dick Dale. Other surf rock bands to check out are Jan & Dean, The Ventures, The Surfaris
I just saw the beach boys this past July. Yeah, they only have one or two members still touring and its a few of the original members kids and others, but it was an absolute blast! Everyone was having a good time. All ages were represented there from people in their 70s to 7 year olds. Everyone having a smile on their face and singing along and having music do what music is meant to do.
As a music nut and a huge fan of the Beach Boys, their music always tickles my brain. Doing those kinds of harmonies without autotune is absolutely wild. Please, please, please, do more Beach Boys reactions.
Brian did write and produce all of their songs, but they did not play in the studio. They were backed on the records by the Wrecking Crew, the best group of studio musicians in the business.
I spent 1957 to 1976 in Southern California and this was my music at that time. I have a CD in my deck in my car right now (Pet Sounds) that I am mountain surfing to....I Lothe CA now and am blessed to have left in in 76 to come to Arizona in the mountains....but my youth in a smaller God Fearing California were irreplaceable
The Beach Boys music is so uplifting it has the power to change the English weather. The sky was grey, it had been raining and the festival site was a mud bath but by the end of their 2005 Glastonbury set the sun was out, the sky was blue and the crowd was crazy 😎
One thing to remember, the Beach Boys were great, the albums, however were mostly played, the music anyway, by The Wrecking Crew, go look them up, some of the greatest musicians of all time, many you've never heard of
In 2010, Brian Wilson put out an album called "Gershwin Reimagined"... he took Gershwin's timeless classics and gave them a Beach Boys twist without losing the integrity of the original tunes. In fact, the Getshwin family gave him 1 or 2 of the composers unfinished works and he completed them. *That* is respect!
Yes!!!!! One of my all time favorite bands. PLEASE go down this rabbit hole! 🙏 You should also watch the movie "LOVE AND MERCY" starring John Cusack who plays Brian Wilson. The movie is all about the Beach Boys, with emphasis on Brian. It's excellent! ❤
The most beautiful Beach Boys song "God Only Knows" . Carl Wilson on lead vocals. Rip Carl Wilson.

they knew how to double track from Buddy Holly. without Holly, modern music wouldn't exist as you know it.
Pet Sounds is one of my favorite albums!!
The Beatles actually admitted that Sgt. Pepper’s was their attempt to come up with something as good as Pet Sounds.
Big difference is that the Beach Boys did not play any instruments on their albums. The studio musicians did all the music and then the Beach Boys would come in and do the singing. It's 1966. Motown, Monkees, Beach Boys, all captured the zeitgeist of the era in different ways. But, there IS a similar vibe......FUN!
And Franki Valli and the Four Seasons
Yeah, The Wrecking Crew played on both bands hits.
@@memorylane7068 Good point.

The Beach Boys were very similar to The Beatles. If you want to call The Beatles a boy band I supposse you can.
Paul McCartney once said that "God Only Knows" just might be the greatest song ever written. That would be a good one to check out. . . . .
One of my favorites. Another is"In My Room"; it just encapsulates Brian Wilson.
It is definitely one of the most covered songs, in fact it was #13 the last time I checked.

Great reaction. The Beach Boys were California. Brian Wilson was The Beach Boys. Leon Russell, Paul McCartney, Elton John and Billy Joel called Brian Wilson a genius. Instrumental track was provided by the Wrecking Crew. RIP Carl .
Leon russell was a member of the wrecking crew and played on almost all beach boy albums
They have so many hits. Sloop John B. Dance,Dance, Dance. Barbara Ann. Help Me, Rhonda. Surfing USA
Help me Rhonda makes me cringe. I am not your between gf.
Love the Theramin. Keep meaning to get one and learn to play it.Maybe next year.
@@cyxabi it's really weird. You aren't playing an instrument, you're manipulating sound waves.
Mike love
The legendary Carol Kaye on bass.
What gets lost about the Beach Boys because everyone talks about Brian Wilson's brilliant writing and arrangements is how much he actually sang.
Beach Boys timeless. MY 19 yr old middle daughter loves them
I'm a white female, grew up in Detroit in the 60s, and got into music of that era at the age of 8 when the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan.
They were idolized by the Beatles and other bands American and British that came after.
Not true! The Beatles gave great credit to the Album PET Sounds, Brians brilliant album….thats all!
They have so many good songs to check out, I grew up listening to them
Glen Campbell was actually part of the band for a few months, in the mid 60's
Took Brian' s spot on tour because Brian had issues on stage. But Glen probably played on more studio tracks than the band itself, besides the singing, of course.
🌸 omg .. when you said the disclaimer stuff, I literally spit out my drink laughing!!!
The Beach Boys have a huge library of work to be explored. But don't forget the guitarists of that genre, e.g., the late Dick Dale's "Miserlou".
This song was huge in bringing the concept of multiple movements from classical music to the modern music scene.
Beach Boys rabbit hole? Yes please!!!
While the Beach Boys were in Japan touring, Wilson struggling with his condition, stayed in Florida, while alone he experimented with different sounds
and wrote the track "Good Vibrations".
He loved boating, the only place that made him feel safe.
Paul McCartney stated the following, "My Favorite album, "Pet Sounds" by the Beach Boys, that was the album that flipped me, and still is one of my favorite albums of all time".
California in the 60s and 70s,
When the state‘s population was 15 million.
Yes. I grew up where the Sacramento Airport is now. Pomegranate orchards, cattails, crawdads, we rode our bikes everywhere,
I know what you mean. I grew up in Newbury Park just down the 101 from you from the late 70s onward. Class of 85' Go pathers!!
Definitely more Beach Boys reactions needed.
Brian Wilson was and is a musical genius.
Pet Sounds... best album ever. It will change your life.
When I think of boy bands, I think of singing harmony but they don't play their own instruments. The Beach Boys definitely did.
Have you ever heard of the Wrecking Crew? If not, you should watch the documentary The Wrecking Crew.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS EVER! ❤ BP
“I Can Hear Music” is my favourite Beach Boys track
You did not comment on the instruments, but that weird whistling one at the beginning and end is called a theramin. It's the same thing that was used in the original Capt Kirk-Spock Star Trek TV theme song. Jimmy Page plays it on some Led Zeppelin songs too.
Thank you for the reminder. I could not remember theramin. Sheldon played it once on Big Bang Theory.
@@lesliebrown1517 Oh right, that Sheldon scene was hilarious! :)
The great Leon Russel, a legend to musicians, played keyboards on all
Beach Boys albums.
I’m not even from California and what you wrote gives me nostalgia for a place i have never lived. 😅
@@kali550 ha ha! Endless Summer! (Can’t find a “hang loose” emoji)
Pet Sounds CAUSED The Beatles to create: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (THE MOST influential and widely-admired (and copied) album OF ALL TIME!)!
Kokomo is a really great song too.
I love this music.... it's my mother's generation...or before my birth.
But we always danced to " her tunes" in the living room..childhood memories are amazing, wonderful
RIP MOTHER I MISS YA❤
I Get Around, Kokomo, Don't Worry Baby and God Only Knows are all big hits. Definitely top 10 band of all-time. Harmonies and music are timeless.
This is from 1967.....Check out Chicago's "Wishing You Were Here" which had Chicago featuring THREE Beach Boys for INSANE harmonies
This song was used as Sunkiss Soda commercial
I've had the pleasure of seeing them live several times. They sound just as good live as they do in the studio.
One thing to remember, the Beach Boys were great, the albums, however were mostly played, the music anyway, by The Wrecking Crew, go look them up, some of the greatest musicians of all time, many you've never heard of
Important facts ∆∆∆
In 2010, Brian Wilson put out an album called "Gershwin Reimagined"... he took Gershwin's timeless classics and gave them a Beach Boys twist without losing the integrity of the original tunes. In fact, the Getshwin family gave him 1 or 2 of the composers unfinished works and he completed them. *That* is respect!
The Beach Boys wrote their own music. They were and still are great. Mike Love and Al Jardine live in Northern CA.
Old music more often than not had a more good feeling wholesome happiness to it.
First concert I ever went to. My friends and I were like 15 and went by ourselves to the USF Sundome.
Yes!!!!! One of my all time favorite bands. PLEASE go down this rabbit hole! 🙏
You should also watch the movie "LOVE AND MERCY" starring John Cusack who plays Brian Wilson. The movie is all about the Beach Boys, with emphasis on Brian. It's excellent! ❤
