considering Paul and George were actually sharing a mic and the insane intensity of this performance which didn't allow for high fives at the time and the fact that were more like brothers than actual brothers and had been together for so long they could read eachother's minds...I'd say the chemistry is palpable. since they didn't play live for years, I don't think you are used to seeing Paul playing the bass (one of the best ever) and the distortion in this case was entirely intentional as it was in happiness is warm gun, helter skelter, i am the walrus, etc. hopefully their hard stuff will grow on you, Beka xo

My God the genius of John Lennon. He wrote this masterpiece and did an awesome job as the lead singer. A tremedous riff at the beginning. RIP John. You are in Heaven now.

I remember as a 12 year old kid in southern California listening to this song being played on the radio, and thought it was the greatest song ever! Brings back many memories! Love that distortion on John Lennon guitar and his voice is classic.

This was also filmed in a studio for the David Frost Show, so sound was even commented on by George yelling to Paul that John's mic was shit. The keyboardist wasn't Billy Preston this time. They were all individuals by this time, surviving the fame in their own way.

Take a look at their nme 1964 performance for some energy. They always were more tame when performing for TV.
The beatles were an amazing live act, they often performed 6-8 hour sets as a residential band in Hamburg in the early 60s. Not a lot of bands as tight as that ever since tbh

You have to realize the Beatles stopped touring in 1966. They weren’t able to hear themselves on stage because of all the crazy screaming. They decided they couldn’t go on touring as their music was an afterthought to crazed audiences. This version of Revolution was recorded in 1968 for play on the David Frost show in England and the Smothers Brothers show in the USA. It’s likely some of the instrument parts were pre recorded, such as the piano. There was no live audience or a small studio audience , so they had no audience interaction. It was performed for filming. This may explain why you don’t see the kind of interaction you’d see in the lesser bands’, you mention like Queen and the derivative Led Zeppelin, concert footage.

  • @rjaraneta913
    @rjaraneta913 2 роки тому +10

The sound was muffled in this video and John's microphone wasn't working well, but John like the dirty sound of this. The studio version sounds excellent though. After 1966 The Beatles were no longer a live act, and they became a studio band. If you want to see them interact with each other, look for their concert footages from 1963 to 1966 when they were a touring band.

This was towards the end of the band and yes there was a lot of tension in the band. The recording is live and 60 years ago so yeah the sound isn't as clean cause the technology was a little less crisp then. John and Paul where competing to be the leader of the band. John split and the band broke up. By the way your gorgeous today as usual!

I believe the Beatles asked for that distortion to be in the song, which went against every instinct the engineer and producer had.
You said that you didn't see a lot of chemistry between them on stage, but, at least on your channel, you've only seen two songs from near the end of their career when they were really getting on each others' nerves and a Paul solo. I think that as you see some older performances, you'll see the chemistry.

Beatles music are top quality, not only their songs but also sound quality of their recordings. Computer is wrong place to listen them if you wanna get all out from their music. Hifi equipments are right way to do it. Many 60's music are recorded with good quality which gives more pleasure to listen of them.

It's a combination of them singing over the studio track (aka; double or mix track) on a live TV show that usually doesn't have the best audio output and recording especially during the 60s and late 70s. Also the heavy distortion of the guitars in bad audio situations are always a recipe for disaster.
Considering all that, it's acceptable and entertaining.

This clip was double tracked, meaning they sang over the original track. This fast version over lapped with the slow versions shoo be do ups and other add ons .
The studio fast version is kiler, but has heaps of distortion on it as the story Lennon says is that he wanted to put this out as a stand alone single ( white Album slow version ) and was told , no its to slow, hense him doing this wired up crazy heavy version , cause he was pissed off.
I still love this clip as its the only performance we see with this potent song for its time.
When i played this song on our record player in 1970, my dads 45 , it blew my mind, and at the age of 5 i know what kind of music i wanted to hear...... Electric guitar !
You will also notice in the Hey Jude Clip, that also is double tracked and you can hear Paul singing at times with himself .
Cheers from Australia, love your vids \m/\m/

There are plenty of reasons why you might not think the Beatles looked like they were having a good time here and it's probably because they weren't. They stopped touring in 1966 and this show, while appearing live, wasn't really. They sang live vocals over an instrumental backing track. I think this was after the White Album, which was very hard on the group with a lot of tension. They were all a little fed up with one another when this was recorded. The only time they did fully live music again was the famous "rooftop concert" in 1969, their last live performance ever.

I'm a little late with my comment, but...WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!! The Beatles had been together since they were 13-16 years old. They grew up together. They were brothers in every sense of the word. They went through so much together during their touring days. There couldn't be a tighter band, musically as well as personally. But I guess you saw it different then everyone else. And by the way, has anyone ever told you, you are gorgeous?

Hello, Good reaction and you are HONEST and that counts more than anything!
So 1- The sound isn't the greatest because this was mostly live (With some added backing sounds for the keyboard for example) so you're getting a raw sound from a live performance, from 1968, which was made for tv. Television back then only had 1 small speaker, no sound system hookups and surround sound, so quality for sound was not as meticulous as it would be decades later.
2- If you want to see that "synergy vibe" where they engage with eachother and smile a bit here and there, check out "Hey Jude" which was filmed on the same day, at the same place, and you even will get to see them interact with a live audience too ;)
But by far, the best live performance to watch of The Beatles, in terms of quality of sound, sight and how they all link with eachother is the performance on the Rooftop.
You have to think that one of the reasons their performances often seemed more "sterile" playing live in earlier shows was because they had no sound monitors, and the crowds were so loud, they could not hear themselves play and sing, so they had to concentrate very hard to even just not play wrong and sing out of tune, leaving very little attention span to chill a bit and look at eachother and just jam, it was very stressful to play with primitive amps and not being able to hear themselves while performing.
Yeah rooftop concert is where you wanna go for a good Live performance of The Beatles.
    Cheers from Montreal, Canada! :)

You see a lot of the chemistry (and the fun they're having) when watching the early Beatles in concert, such at on the "Ed Sullivan Show." You may want to check out the Beatles on that show singing "This Boy" live, lead singer John Lennon, to see and get the feel for that. During that performance, you'll see them taking quick sideways glances at each other while trying not to laugh, and then looking at each other and then laughing. Every performance was a lark for them. When they had to sing to pre-recorded songs for TV, they purposely made obvious wording mistakes to make it obvious, because they didn't like doing it.
Here's a link for the "This Boy" performance on the "Ed Sullivan Show." John's high, raw voice shines through on this one.:
    ua-cam.com/video/7BdNrReDhGs/v-deo.html&start_radio=1
However, even in their later years together, no matter their squabbles, they always had fun, which is obvious in numerous UA-cam videos.

If you read lips, you can see George lean over to Paul and remark on John's mic sound direct into the board (":His mic is shit") This was a first, recording rock directly into the board and mixing later. That accounts for John's guitar sound as well (his Epiphone Casio's hollow body helps too)

In the world of modern popular culture over the past 60 years, there has been few bands with greater "chemistry", than the Beatles. Starting with their gigs in dirty basements and clubs, in front of sometimes criminal audiences. It's no coincidence, that Mick Jagger once referred to this Beatles unit as the "Fourheaded Monster". The four of them were only able to get through these years of apprenticeship and later the concerts during the "Beatlemania" healthy, as a sworn unit. Something like that isn't really necessary in the TV studio, where you're producing a clip, that's supposed to promote a new single. One deliver a routine job and it's good. The Beatles also had a busy day on September 4th, 1968. Two clips of "Revolution" and three of "Hey Jude" were produced, the latter with studio audiences.
As far as Led Zeppelin or Queen are concerned, one can say, that the artists also understood better and better, how to stage themselves, be it with clothes, gestures or other gimmicks. At no point in their careers of Queen or Led Zeppelin, have I been able, to register a greater band chemistry as the one of the Beatles and, although I've written quite a lot here now,😄I don't consider it particularly important.

1968 was the beggining of the end, the relationship among the Beatles was starting to get sour since John, George, and Ringo felt that Paul was getting too bossy... Sound engineer Geoff Emerick got the idea of installing the microphones real close to the amplifiers to augment the loudness of the song; EMI executives only allowed that to the Fab Four for the time being!

No one, it's a recording...it was for a promotional film for the song, coupled with the Hey Jude performance on the David Frost Show 1968. Hey Jude was also done in the same way with an audience. no chemistry? they had given 1,000% on tour through 1966. Watch the earlier stuff, you WILL see chemistry. If you don't , you're blind. "Beatles lacked chemistry on stage". There's a first for everything I guess.

At that point, they hadn't played a live show for over 2 years. This was "semi-live" for a TV show.

@@lyndoncmp5751 I rate Led Zeppelin live no higher than the Beatles. Of course, the technical possibilities for concerts improved significantly from the late 1960s, not least thanks to the Beatles. But even with their "living room speakers" the Beatles put on rousing performances, when they felt like it.

This was a live recording and not recorded in the recording studio. That is why the quality was not top notch. If you love PAUL MCCARTNEY solo and performing live than you need to check out this incredible live performance of MAYBE I'M AMAZED. It would be a great reaction video for you.
