  • This Krups Le Cube coffee machine has no power and I'm trying to repair it in this video. Opening up a coffee machine is definitely not fun!
    Hope you enjoy!

    PS. I'm not an expert in repairs at all. I do this for fun, and it may not be the best or safest way to go about repairing broken stuff. I'm pretty good at melting plastic though. Please don't copy me - I'm an idiot.

    Top fix Ste, that machine served me well for 11 year's doing a minimum of 2 cups a day. I flushed it once a month and to my knowledge never ran it dry. It just stopped working one morning which left me really miffed. Hope you got some enjoyment from fixing it.

      Given the fact that both thermal fuses were blown it is certainly a heat related issue. Here are my guesses as to why:
      A) Accumulated scale in the boiler led to a temperature overrun (unlikely)
      - Running vinegar through the machine will resolve any scale issues. You can also use a product called Cafiza
      B) UNDERRATED thermal fuses that just gave it up eventually (more likely)
      - Replacing them with slightly higher rated units (which you did) is a the thing to do there.
      Operating Instructions
      - The blinking light around the power switch indicates that the boiler is heating up to operating temperature.
      - You would be well advised to get a temperature gun to see what the boiler temperature actually is at operating temperature (you might be surprised)
      - Once the "light ring" around the power switch is solid you can press the other buttons (cup icons). Before that, nothing will happen if you push them.
      - The small cup icon pulls a "short" shot (espresso).
      - The big cup icon pulls a "long" shot (americano).
      With new thermal fuses, the machine should be good for another few years of service, as long as it is maintained (i.e. cleaned) often enough

    HOLY CRAP !!!
    That coffee maker's N O I S Y !!!!!
    And YES, you are right about the Ristretto : "In the context of coffee, ristretto refers to a short (restricted) shot of espresso, meaning the barista pulls only the first portion of a full-length espresso shot. Ristretto is made with the same Espresso Roast used for full espresso shots, but less hot water is pushed through the grounds."

      I have my Krups nespresso machine at least 10 years. Had to get it fixed after year one haven’t had a problem with it since. I use the Aldi pods, a few coffees a week. The cost at this point is negligible and it’s a very convenient way of making coffee. Aluminium pods are cleaned out and recycled.

    • @JustinEmlay
      @JustinEmlay 2 роки тому

      Ok, but why do I need cartridges that fit many machines? I only have the one machine. I don't buy 5,000 pods at a time. I don't complain about the pen I bought because it's ink cartridge wont work in any other pen.
      I love mine. I have the Keurig K-Cafe Special Edition. Makes a super fast cup of coffee and I have hot milk to pour into it. Can't beat that.
      Also, they aren't expensive. Not at all. This might be my privilege talking but I have zero issues affording 35 cents for a cup of coffee. Especially with the convenience that comes with it.

    • @dr_ned_flanders
      @dr_ned_flanders 2 роки тому +3

      @@JustinEmlay it is great you love your coffee machine, however, the cartridges could be standardised but they make it so it only fits their brand or model of machine and therefore they can charge you more money for it and lock you into buying their limited range of products only. It is wasteful and anticompetitive. We see it happen with Dymo label printers, printer cartridges and anywhere else they can try and get away with it. It is just a scummy tactic that screws the consumer.

    • @JustinEmlay
      @JustinEmlay 2 роки тому +1

      @@dr_ned_flanders Nope. Keurig already got sued for that. Anyone can make them. It's an open market. Keep in mind, I'm talking about the states. I don't know where you hail from but that got applied world wide. I also literally put in the price I pay. Also, limited? These companies have WAY MORE options then you will ever find of ground coffee in any store.
      You also aren't taking into account that various machines work drastically different in how they produce their coffee so actually no, they can't be standardized. Not across the board.

    I fixed a Krups Nespresso machine three years ago. I made my own screwdriver for the oval screws by drilling an oval hole in the tip of a bolt :-) Probably my proudest achievement in self-repair. Ordering and replacing the missing part was easy after that, even though it has to withstand 18 bar. Works like a charm again ever since. Got a proper repair toolkit after that, the iFixit one, which has the right bit.

    I’m surprised the thermal fuse fault wasn’t hiding another issue. I would have expected the unit to survive being activated without water in a more graceful way but perhaps they have been doing some ‘value engineering’. Well done for getting it going again ... or ... sorry to see someone else has fallen for the microscopic quantities of coffee in pods trick again 😀

    • @StezStixFix
      @StezStixFix  3 роки тому +9

      Thanks Chris 👍. I did a bit of digging around after filming this, and seemingly the thermal fuses do have a tendency to give up on these things with heavy use. I'd like to think it's not so the manufacturers can sell more of them, but I'm probably being a bit naive there! 😬

    The buttons are supposed to be "programmed" first time you plug it in you hold the button to your desired volume and it will remember it next time. It will flash 3 times to indicate you programmed it. You could program the small mug to have a big volume and the big mug to have a small volume 😆 it wouldn't make any sense but you can!

    My machine is a Krups Citiz, it's quite similar but smaller. I've got it for free from work, because it was tripping the circuit breaker. Those anti-tamper screws were annoying to remove, I threw them out and replaced with regular Philips head screws. On my machine, the issue was a tiny hole that developed in the plastic tube that feeds water to the brew chamber. Every time it brewed coffee, hot water would spray out of this hole, resulting in a short circuit somewhere. And the reason for the hole is that every time the lever is open, the hole rubs on the lever hinge, each time in the same spot. Over time, a hole develops. Replaced the 2 EUR tube with a new one, added put two layers of heat-shrink tubing to give it some more durability. The machine lasted me 5 years so far, but today it's refusing to turn on. Yesterday it was working, and the water tank is full. But still I am guessing it's likely the thermal fuse problem. Going to open it up again to investigate. By the way, the problem with the plastic tube developing a hole via rubbing on the lever hinge, I have suspicions Krups knew about it, I mean it's easy to notice when cycling the lever after taking the machine's covers off. I've found another such machine in the electronics bin at the recycling center, I brought it home since it had the red side panels that I liked. After I disassembled that machine, I noticed that the tube has a hole in the same location. Not sure it's really malicious on Krups part, but their engineers certainly should have noticed this rubbing, so it's suspicious they did nothing to fix that.

    My worst pod coffee machine nightmare was when my wife's Keurig quit working and she asked me to fix it. I opened the bottom panel and tens of thousands of dead ants fell out, along with their eggs and young. It was absolutely nasty. I imagine they were cooked to death en masse, but we hadn't seen any ants in the kitchen in months, and they just suddenly appeared in force, in the coffee maker. She did not want me to diagnose the issue (almost surely thermal fuse) after that.

    Poor Nespresso pod. Been overshot. Ristretto is 25ml, Espresso is 40ml, Lungo is 110ml. So that machine looks like it has a Ristretto icon, which is the small cup one and the larger one is the Espresso option.
    If you choose the wrong option you are over shooting the pod with more water than required, hence the almost clear liquid.

    Ristretto is typically a very concentrated form of espresso. The serving is therefore very small. It usually has a red hue when made from a proper espresso machine.

    Very good you fix things. But don't make it sound so hard, so difficult. 9 out of 10 times very simple and easy to repair

    You needed to rub it through the cleaning phase.
    Just run hot water then cold then hot then cold repeat for like 20 minutes and you will see bits hard bits come out

      @@StezStixFix turn the machine on, wait until the cup's buttons light turn on.
      Put a cup in place and then, you press and hold the button "small cup". When you have the right level, release the button. The next time you will press it, it will give you the exact same level 👍
      Do the same with the button "big cup" and that's it, now you have a personnal setting for each button ! 😉
