No Pressure? How to Replace the OPV on DeLonghi, Smeg, etc Coffee Machines
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лип 2024
- Sometimes espresso machines lose pressure, or have no pressure at all, anymore. In this case, it is normally the OVP valve or the pump which needs replacing. In this video, I show how to replace the OVP in the DeLonghi Dedica, and show why these over pressure valves fail first. This same part is used in many DeLonghi, Smeg and other espresso/coffee machines.

Hey guys, I hope this video helps you either now, or in the future! This is a pretty cheap fix, so if your machine loses pressure, just return to this video for changing the OVP.

One question: I am trying to solve an issue with an ECP33.21, water and steam flow out of the wand but no water comes from the hub. Water is flowing just not through the hub.
That worked great ! thanks for the nice explained tutorial ! I think this machine is kind of not very well designed i would say to stay polite... to much plastic...
I have done it. However it does not work. Still water bubbles in the tank and no pressure 😕
Hi Tom from Jacksonville, FL. Thank you so much for your video!!! You are so knowledgeable! I am wondering if you have any tips or videos on how to fix a SMEG Drip Coffee Pot it doesn’t have any pressure to force the hot water through to the pot. Thank you in advance :)
@@steffaniewest6872 Hi! Have you given it a thorough descaling lately?
Exactly this fixed this for me, and now my wife thinks I'm awesome! Many thanks
This video has saved me forking out hundreds of pounds on a new machine, and I get the satisfaction of fixing the machine myself. Thanks Tom!
Awesome - thanks for posting your feedback! Good job on the repair. :)
Our 5 year old Dedica 680 had stopped working and because we really love the machine and because we use every day, we decided to replace it with a brand new 685. The problem was when making an expresso, it would start to pump the water, then after a bit, it would stop and flash the lights indicating an error. My initial thought was the pump failing. After watching this video, I checked for bubbles coming up in the water reserve, but didn't notice any, but I decided for cost of a new OVP (8 euros), I might as well change it along with the pump (24 euros). I also took the opportunity to replace the original steam wand with a Rancilio, something I wouldn't try on a brand new machine.
This video was a fantastic source for disassembly and replacing the OVP and pump and another Tom's Coffee Corner video showing how to upgrade to Rancilio was also very helpful!
I also happened to see a Delongia video that showed how to clean the diffuser (a single screw). My bad, but this is something I had never done because I was unaware it should be done periodically. I was shocked as to how much coffee had made its way to the inside of the diffuser. So much so that it might have been the real culprit because it was so clogged.
No matter what the problem was, for a relatively low cost, I have a Dedica with a new valve, pump and a real steam wand.
Thank you Tom, your videos are awesome!
Thanks for posting your experience, John! I'm glad you got your machine fixed!
Thanks a million! It took us a while but it was worth it and our coffee machine is working again! We replaced the pump at the same time. Taking pictures throughout really helped.
Glad it helped, thanks for the feedback!
Tom, you are a real do-it-yourself person, I admire your work and videos. I just don't have the patience to disassemble and reassemble a coffee machine. You are best 👌
Dude, the tip that you can use a slotted screwdriver for the hex screws made it just on it's own! I used these instructions to replace the pump, and they were fantastically clear for disassembly and reassembly. Thanks a million, for 24 GB pounds I have my coffee machine back!
Now THAT is the kind of comment I like to hear! So happy you got your machine working again. Cheers! ☕️
I thought it was a long shot but this worked like a charm! Great instructions as well, easy to follow along with. Thanks a lot!
Awesome! Happy to hear if worked out. 👍🏻
Great video, found you when trying to troubleshoot my broken machine. Took husband and I, with little experience, a bit under 3 hours, and now all fixed :-) Thank you!
Awesome, Kate! 😉 So happy the video could help, and that you guys were successful!
Hi Tom! Just wanted to say a big thank you for this video! My partner managed to change the valve with no issues following your instructions, and now we have the joy of our morning espresso back without having to spend money on a new machine :D Thank you so much!!!
Just what I love to hear! Thanks for the feedback, and happy coffee drinking!
Amazing! My Delonghi Dedica had stopped producing hot water, and I followed this video and now it works again! I am so happy. All for the cost of a £7.99 valve. Thank you so much!
Always happy to hear a success story!
I have every hex screwdriver except the one that fits, will try the slotted screwdriver. Why do companies do this. This video is a life saver, thank you.
Thanks, Kitty. A slotted screwdriver works well. Cheers! Tom
Thank you for the very clearly explained video. I have never attempted something like this before but have now saved my Dedica from being wasted, working great again now
Glad it helped - good job fixing your machine!
Thank you for this video! Just replaced the valve in under one hour. Saved me so much money and I don’t have to replace it.
Noice! That's what I like to hear! Makes having made this video even more worth it! 😎
Another happy viewer here, having fixed my wife's machine following this guide.
Awesome! Thanks for posting your feedback!
It works! I just replaced the valve in mine, based on your video. Thank you very much for this great content, it was logical, it explained the causes and symptoms and it was easy to follow. Also it was shot beautifully! Thank you for saving my machine!
Good deal, frog hunter! I am always happy to hear such good feedback. Cheers! Tom
Excellent tutorial! We have just victoriously made the first espresso after the fix!! Many many thanks.
That is awesome news, Laura! Glad to hear the video helped. By the way, you have a nice name. Cheers, Tom
Holy Cow, this guy sure is knowledgeable!! You would think he was the Engineer who devised this Coffee Maker!! Very Impressive 👏👏👏
Haha, thanks Terri! Just learning by doing. 😉 Tom
What a star you are - really great video and even a total 'non-techy - DIY' type person like me actually managed to take the machine apart and seemingly put it back together with no parts leftover - just wow! It is fiddly but with a little persistence absolutely worked a treat. Also seems to be delivering a hotter brew. Thank you so much - top guy.
Wow, thanks Rob! Glad the video helped! Tom
You can actually program it for three temp brew settings
Thanks Tom! Bought a second hand one before christmas and enjoyed it for a whole two weeks😢. Then the water stopped running…Followed your instructions and took the gamble it was the OPV, replaced it and…. it worked again!!!!!!💪 many thanks again!
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback!
I lost most of the steam pressure a couple weeks ago. Spent 5 euros on a valve and an hour with the help of your video and it's working better than ever. Thanks a lot, Tom! :)
Awesome, thanks for posting your success!
Thank you for taking the time to make video- very helpful
You're very welcome!
Thanks for the video. I have just repaired my old machine - the OPV cost about £8.00. Waaayy cheaper than buying a new machine!
Great to hear!
The whole process took me about ~1 hour.
Everyting went great, i can now drink my favourite coffe again, thanks for awesome tutorial :)
Great to hear! Thanks for your feedback!
Tom, thanks so much! I have just repaired my machine, following your instructions. Really appreciated.
Awesome! So happy to hear that! 😊
Thank you so much for this great video! I fixed my dedica in 2 hours thanks to you. I replaced both the valve and the pump as the symptoms of my mine was different. It was just not pumping water at all half of the time. Thanks again!
Awesome, so happy to hear it!
I got my delongi from goodwill for $20 and took it all apart and modified - lasted about 3 years then got this same issue! Thanks for the tutorial
Nice find! Gotta love Goodwill!
Maaaan this is just perfect! I will be following your steps soon to get mine repaired. Your video is gonna save me a ton of time! Thank you!
Awesome! Let me know how it goes there, buddy. 👍
Thank you Tom! my Delonghi model is 3420, around 3 years old, first I thought it was clogging, but turnned out it was low pressure, it took me at least 1 and a half hours to disassemble (not very easy) and take the OVP out, since the rest of the machine looks pretty strong, so I gave it a try and order the part, and took me another 1.5 hour to assemble(might need some plumber + clocker skill since there isn't much room to operate), and almost gave up in the middle, probably next time it will be a little easier. Hope someone at Delonghi can see this and replace the OVP with something not that easy to fail, since the rest of the machine is pretty strong. Right now, my Delonghi is good and I am handy. Best wishes!
Hello Liang, thanks for posting your feedback! I am really glad to hear that you could repair your machine. Good job on your perseverance, and saving your machine! 👍🏻
Thank you, Tom! This video was a great help to me and coffee machine has a new lease of life!
Perfect! So happy to hear that James!
Thanks Tom for this. Great help and vision on your side teaching others on how to fix their gear. Good for people and for the environment. Since Coffee is a serious matter your task is monumental. I managed to fix my machine. Eternal gratitude mate !
Glad it was helpful! That's a big part of the reason I like doing these types of videos. Cheers!
I have just repaired my machine and enjoy my latte right now. Thnks a lot Tom ❤❤

This eventually helped me, my coffe machine has just got a second life! Thanks a lot for the video and links. Enjoy your coffe ;)
Glad I could help! Always happy to hear that feedback. Cheers!
Thanks, Tom. I've just fixed mine after following your video. Only two screws left when I finished! I found it best to pop the on-off switch out, and shove it back in when it was all re-assembled.
Awesome Peter, thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for the video. I've been able to fix my machine as well and now the coffee tastes like the first time.
Great to hear!
Thank you kindly. 11.99 later the coffee is finally back and it actually tastes better than new. Thanks again for the detailed work. Got mine from ESC coffee in Burlington (Canada).
Awesome! Happy to hear it!
Thanks so much for the video. I replaced it in my coffee machine Delonghi EC271 and it worked it!! The machine opens in a different way but the pieces are exactly the same. Just with 10 euros for the OVP I saved a lot.
Awesome Maria, so happy to hear that you fixed your machine! Tom
Perfect man really good tutorial
Glad you liked it!
Tom, thank you so much for your videos about dedica. I ordered one with bottomless portafilter. Hope that model would be enough for learning. Happy new year!
Thanks you for this great video. Worked for me!! No sweeter coffee than this one after fixing the machine🙂
Thankyou Tom for helping me save my best coffee machine. Your instructions helped immensely.

@@TomsCoffeeCorner Can we get shares in that pescy little OVP valve?
Thanks for the video and detailed guide, easy to follow and solved my issue where the pressure in the steam wand would cut off very quickly. Thanks
Awesome! Happy to hear this helped.
Very good content. Fixing thinks are good for the environment and for our pockets
Thanks, Cristian! I agree, it is better to fix something rather than have to throw it away or recycle it. Plus, it's a fun project! Cheers, Tom
Great Tutorial!
Congratulations friend, it cannot be explained better, you have embroidered it. Greetings
Thank you! Cheers!
Super Video, Reparatur dadurch sehr easy! Danke Dir und youtube!
Sehr geil! Danke fuers Feedback!
Thank you! found an abandoned unit and this was the part that needed replacing! easy fix
Awesome, have fun with it!
Thank you so much for this video. I just fixed my coffee machine and can drink my espresso at home again!
You are so welcome! Glad your machine is fixed!
Subscribed waiting for the 9 bar mod!! Thanks for this video
Thanks, Rincon! I already have a couple of small springs organized to try. I am just waiting to get a portafilter that I can put a manometer on. Stay tuned!
Thank you! This helped me tremendously to change the valve.
Glad it helped!
Thank you very much Tom sir :) , brilliant clip, easy to follow , 1 hour work saved me 200$ … I owe you a few beers now .. or coffee :)
Fantastic, Bogdan! So happy to hear the video helped. 👍🏻 Cheers, Tom
Finally..I was able to do it. Thank you!
Awesome! That is what I like to hear! 👏🏻
Wow thanks man! had crazy loud machine with very little water output then noticed bubbles in the tank while brewing. gave it a shot and now the machine brews nice coffee and is quiet aswell
Very nice! Glad the video helped. :)
Thank you Tom! I also changed the pump, while at It, on my 9 year old dedica. Getting good presure again, nice shots with the non presuríced porta filter and fine grind.
Awesome, glad to hear it!
Nos waiting the opus fallow grinder to arrive
Thanks for the instructions! Finally fixed my Dedica, after 2 long espressoless years!
Fantastic! Glad to hear it!
Thanks mate. Great info. Coffee machine is working again...
Perfect!
Perfect! It worked. Thanks so much
Great to hear!
Thank you so much for this video! So informative and helpful in taking the machine apart. My machine had similar symptoms but would no provide hot water or steam, but the pump was vibrating and the boiler clearly getting hot. I changed the valve and pump in case either were defective but this did not solve the issue. I then removed the boiler and found that water was pumping to the boiler but not coming through the other side. On removing i found that i could not blow into the boiler so concluded it must be blocked with limescale. New boiler from ebay fixed it! Thanks again!
Awesome - thanks for sharing your success! Tom
Thanks so much! I was doubting whether or not I should also purchase a new pump but I took the risk of assuming it was indeed only the antidrip valve and you were right! Only cost me 12 euro's incl shipping. Was able to put my old senseo back in storage.
Great to hear! Thanks for sharing your success!
I done ( changed pressure valve) all working properly ( not leak), thank you for the video
Very nice, thanks for sharing!
Fixed! Thanks🎉
Fantastic job, thank you. Worked for my delonghi icona it's got same valve.❤
Great to hear!
Hey Tom, I've fixed my 8 years old machine thanks to you. It costed me $6. Really appreciated this video.
Awesome, that's what I like to hear!
where did you order this part?
@@TonyMontana-ke2kz It's a local online shopping site in Turkey. I suspect you can't order there.
@@TonyMontana-ke2kz It's listed in the video description. :)
Great contents! Looking forward to your sharing on modifying ec685 to 9 bar.
Thanks Mr. Fong! And I am also very curious to see what this machine can produce with lower pressure as well. Stay tuned for that. 😉
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I successfully replaced my OPV and also replaced two tubes that were completely full of calcium (I live in France). The machine is working perfectly. Only problem is now I'm on the De'Longhi Dedica rabbit trail thanks to you 😂
Awesome Chelsea, thanks for sharing your success! Enjoy the rabbit hole. :)
@@TomsCoffeeCorner ok so I have another question. It's definitely working as there's actual water coming out and hot too, but not as much water as there should be. Do you think I need to replace the pump as well? Thanks again for the help :)
Thank You! Worked for me, too!
Glad it helped!
Thanks Mate! I could not find the same issue with the rubber/plastic piece, but replacing the valve resolved my issue. Probably something was off with the springs or whatever. Anyway - good content.
helpful and useful video, thank you :)
You're welcome!
Worked! Perfect! that was it!
Nice! Thanks for sharing!
thanks tom, this is super helpful, i was very annoyed every morning because this coffee machine problem!
You're welcome! Glad the video was helpful!
Thanks man, we’re back to brewing!
Awesome!
Brilliant-once I worked out how to slow down your fast forward bits! I found it easier to put the seal on the hose and insert together to be able to get the clip on.
Awesome, great to hear it, Joanna!
Thank you so much !
You're welcome!
Thanks for this, i could fix the problem step by step and my coffee machine restart for a new life, fingers crossed!
Awesome! Glad to hear your machine is working again!
Thanks man you save my money😂
Glad I could help!
You helped me 🎉
Excellent!
Fantastic video, well presented with minimum useless overbabble.
i will be replacing both the pump and valve tomorrow on my dedica.
my problem is no pressure at all, however, its intermittent. sometimes if just stops pumping for no apparent reason, even though the pump is vibrating, but no pressure, then later it just starts working again. Most irritating.
Anyways, thanks for the great video and links, and I look forward to fixing my machine.
Glad to help! It could be that the little orange stopper inside may sometimes be situated just right, for it to work, and other times not.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner I suspect thats a fact ;-) I changed the OPV and pump for good measure, already two double cappuccinos down and its working well. Thanks for the excellent video's.
I also changed the head gasket, its like I have a whole new machine for 33 euro, i wish all repair videos were as light and straight forward as this one.
Thanks a lot!!!
You're welcome!
Yesterday I was doing research about modding my dedica whole day, I watched all the videos about opv and so on, and BOOM! There is your video and I clicked immediately. I'm really interested how will it perform with 9 bars, if you can make a tutorial where you install manometer and adjust the pressure, I would be super grateful! Thanks in advance
Awesome Bartek! Glad this could help. I have heard that a spring from a Bic pen was tried...I want to for sure get a manometer together before experimenting, to make some objective remarks. Cheers! Tom
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Almost seems worth cutting and stretching the original spring to see if it can be modded into a lesser pressure spring. Especially since you have an extra set of springs now.
@@jwm2762 If one is feeling particularly like tinkering, then yes. I found that cutting the spring to a max pressure of 9 bar became way too low during an actual extraction. I just keep the OPV original now.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner I watched a few videos and was inspired to mod our machine. I've cut my portafilter and we're using a non-pressurized basket with quality coffee and getting decent espresso! My next mod is the steam wand but I figured when I went in there I'd mod the spring as you did in another video. Are you saying that after experimenting your sticking with the stock non-modded valve? If so, I'm thinking that I'll throw a new OEM valve in while I have it apart since we've been running this thing nearly daily since Winter 2018 now.
Hello Tom!
Great video!!! Thank you so much for the great instructions.
I have a question:
Im currently experiencing LOW PRESSURE within the steam wand. Sometimes the machine pauses itself(flashing buttons light) in the middle of steaming milk. If I replace the OPV only, do you think this might solve the low pressure steam?
Thanks!!!!
You betcha!
Subscribed and waiting for you to find out how to get 9 bars lol. Great video my friend
Thanks for the sub, Andreas! I am planning to do that video soon...just in the preparation. Cheers!
Would love to see a 9 bar mod, I've seen some people on /r/espresso modding these with a Gaggia OPV that can be regulated. But if a simple spring mod could do something that'd be so much easier to do.
Oh that is a cool idea to add an adjustable OPV, but I guess that depends on how easily that can be installed. AFAIK, switching out springs will take about as long as the fix in this video, which was about an hours for me. Do you have that reddit link for the adjustable OPV mod? Cheers!
Like idea
Bonjour Tom,
Your videos are the most useful on the net. Not many other sites give such information. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world wide community.
I ordered and replaced the OPV valve on my Deduce EC680 to resolve poor flow and low pressure. After putting everything back together bubbles are coming out of the port in the tank when I press the button to make a coffee. What would be the reason for that if not a faulty valve?
I'm sorry, but that's the main reason you'd see bubbles coming up. Did the new OVP help your group head pressure, or not? Sometimes you will still see very small bubbles coming up into the water tank, despite a correctly working OVP, but not big bubbles. The only other thing I can think of is perhaps a calcified line downstream of the OPV.
I had problem with steamer. Espresso looked alright. After changing pump steamer good as new. Thanks
Good to know!
Again wonderful video, you are a Wizard! Just wondering is there by any chance that there is a metal or brass version of that ovp?
I am not so sure. I haven't seen one yet, but maybe someone else knows?
Any ideas why my steam wand isn't as strong anymore. Suddenly its not as warm and not as powerful for steaming.
I have to press down hard on the reservoir to stop it making that loud buzzing noise and start pumping. Is this a OPV issue or something else? thanks
I have a problem in frothing the milk the machine doesnt froth milk anymore, could it be from the OPV or something else plz advise .
Hey Tom! thanks for your awesome video. do you think that 3d Printing that worn out part and replacing it could solve the issue?
I don't think so, because it's rubberized. The OPV is pretty cheap, though.
@TomsCoffeeCorner Hi dear Tom. I just wanted to highlight that this DIY project of 3d printing the worn-out part did not work. although I knew it wouldn't work, I just wanted to try😄 Also I might get a new OPV. but I'm not sure if thats gonna solve the problem with my dedica. when I turn it on, after the boiler heats up, I can hear boiling sounds and bubbles in the back. steam pressure is low, when I press espresso button, the first three seconds no water comes out, only after 3 seconds water starts to come out. I am confused which part to replace on my dedica🥲
I just discovered maybe now too high pressure because go Out coffee holders, I check rubber seal, any suggestions? Maybe coffee too old or too much grounded or maybe seal change. I’m really love this machine. Please help
You might have ground too fine...then the water tries to escape not through the coffee bed, but rather inbetween the basket lip and gasket.
THank you, I have a k-mix so tryiing to figure out what to take apart--I dont think I will remember how to put it back together.
Good luck!
hi , thanks for vid very easy to follow, i ordered part form amazon and replaced , but on testing have no water coming out of brew head . machine starts pump sounds and then stops , there is also no water at the wand.
so took it all a part # and when i blow into the new ovp air comes out of the return to tank not the output to the brew head. when i blow into the old ovp air comes from the out to the brew head. is the new ovp faulty?
so i replaced with old ovp and reassembled , but no joy and no water from brew head as before. I wonder if the pump needs priming . any help appreciated
It could very well be that the water circuit requires priming. If there's too much air, the pump will not be able to overcome the air bubble. Cheers and good luck!
Thank you Tom, you are such à connoisseur on top of a great engineer.
I love coffee and my dedica 685 but it seems rather délicate... so coffee does not go through ground coffee but it does through the pods, how is this possible? Thank you for your advice 🙏
Well, the pods are likely ground coarser, and also the water might flow around the pod. Try grinding your coffee coarser, if it's not making it though.
Hi! Thanks for sharing. This means we'd have to change our valves every year or so? hum! Any way to get the original 15 bars?
No, I don't think that is necessary Victor. Your milage of course is going to vary, depending on how often you use it. Don't know about the 15 bars.
The Gaggia is also advertised as having 15 bars, but I measured that at 12.
Hi Tom, thanks for the vid, great explanation, I’ve done this but sadly it’s not solved the problem, do you think it could be a problem with the pump? The machine is quieter than normal and is delivering hardly any water!
Sure, it could be the pump, or the lines might be calcified, or there might be an air pocket in there somewhere. You will have to troubleshoot it...
Hello, I have replaced the water pump and the pressure pump, it is still bubbling and the water does not come out. What did I do wrong, or did they send me a defective pump?
Hi Tom
My dedica was running off of water in the tank and i didn't check it, when it stopped the first coffee shot I just pressed the button again for more coffee and then I realised about the water tank, i filled with water again but guess what? Water is not coming through and it makes like a dry sound but it's not delivering water, what I have to do?
Thanks in advance!
Hello Tom, many thanks for having taken the time to reply. It's strange cause I always have coffee ground the same and it stopped all of a sudden.
So, if all your suggestions do not work, I should then change both pump and anti drip valve?
Thank you 🙏 Maria
That could be the issue, but you might need to localize. I have also seen water lines getting clogged with calcium before. Just do a visual inspection, and see if you find anything obvious. Good luck!
great video. i followed the instructions but unfortunately, i misplaced the gasket. do you know where i can another gasket?
thank you
