Helmet Meantime guitar lesson

- This lesson is my own (unauthorized) one guitar transcription of the song. I skimped on a few of Page's note choices (especially the beginning) , mainly because I'm not as good as him. But I hope this lesson helps a few helmet fans to jam along at home.
There are a few cover versions out there on UA-cam. I am certain that none of them are 100% accurate. For example, one error that I've seen in every single one I watched is with the riff in 3/4 that I discuss at the twelve-minute mark. For some reason, everyone plays a G chord (5th fret) at the end of the cycle; it's supposed to be an F# (4th fret). Just watch some live Helmet clips if you don't believe me.
Great video. I've always thought that Meantime-era Helmet was the pinnacle of heavy music. So much good stuff coming out of NY during the early 90's...
You really did a great job in this video. Past 5 years now and I still like to watch it to get sure of all details of that awesome song. Thank you.
+Adan Ribeiro Thanks man, a comment like yours means a lot to me. In truth i was never sure if i should have posted this lesson... i Am confident my lesson is accurate but I make a few mistakes out of nervousness and I contemplated trying to do it all again (not having any editing software I could not do it in sections) but ultimately said what the hell. My production values sucked but I'm glad the content helped you.
Awesome video. I really can feel your passion while playing and teaching this song. Thanks, man.
Extremely helpful for those random verse fills I struggled with. Many thanks
Amazing, all these years later and this video is still helping. I love it, thank you!!! Check out "Turned Out" next
Great job man, you made this so easy to learn!
So happy that this little video of mine helped another guitarist out!
(A few years late to the party, but for what it's worth) Thanks for this. I'd been having a really hard time trying to nail down the triplet feel by something other than memory; the visualization of the tab really helped
+Dan Roach your comment makes me so happy. I know some folks probably have a good laugh at my primitive production, but at least the information has proven useful! I think tabs are fairly useless without some kind of framework to represent note lengths and rhythm cues, which is why I made these charts. I'm so glad you found it helpful.
thanx man, very accurate lesson, this song is soooo heavy and badass....
Favorite band since this album dropped - just saw them live and they were honestly better than ever. They actually didn't play this but they played so many great songs off the album - role model, FBLA II, Ironhead. I can feel your passion for the song in the video and just wanted to drop a note to say thank you and hope your doing well
Thaks a lot man, nothing beats waking up to see a new comment like this. Rock on!
Awesome thanks! Love the charts too!👌🏻
Nicely done my friend.Greetings from a Helmet Fan from Germany.
@ironhemp Thank you. I plead guilty to being over-analytical, but in my defense it's at least partly because this is a lesson and I want to break it down as much as possible. I agree that feeling is important, but it's also fun to be able to explain exactly what's going on. I look at a Helmet song like a watch or a clock; the finished product is great but it's cool to take it apart and see how the pieces fit together.
legend! awesome vids man
"i really love helmet" .....understatement of the year
Hi, thanks for your comment. For the most part, the bass just doubles the rhythm guitar part, so my references to fret numbers will work for bass too... the only part I can't really transcribe his the very beginning where they are all freaking out. But all the main riffs are played the same on bass (just using only the low D string, of course). Good luck!
I really love helmet too man!
@blackened247 Thanks a lot for the compliment. Unfortunately, there's no way I could do a Sinatra lesson, because I have no idea what the two guitars are doing - and that song is really built around note clusters where both guitars play stuff that kind of clashes with the other guitar, creating a wash of notes and overtones. The riff is basic, but all the crazy sounds of the guitars (and even the bass) ... I'm sorry, it's beyond my "figuring out" skills.
Just saw them at a show last month, thats how i found them. They f*ckin rocked. I already learned Unsung, time to learn this song too. Thanks for the lesson man, this is the only one on youtube for this song.
Thanks! Yeah I have a few videos and I always pick a song that has not been done properly, if at all, by anyone else. I'm glad I got to Unsung before anyone else LOL (even though I now disagree with something I said!). In The Meantime is pretty obscure. When I did this video I was learning how to UA-cam. You couldn't post really long videos. I regret that I did not actually play the song through in this video, but I'm glad it's still been helpful. I never did advance beyond single camera, anxiety-inducing continuous shot. But I love knowing that what I do on UA-cam helps some people learn. You made my day.
@@ifutureman keep doin ya thing man. You should do a lesson for Ironhead if you havent already. That whole album rocks🤘
@@gmoder100 Helmet changed my life. I heard something from Strap it On one night way back when and their sound just hit me on every level. I was lucky to see them a month later at that same bar, (The Brighton Bar, Long Branch NJ) and I have shared that show here on UA-cam. When I uploaded they didn't allow 50-minute clips so i had to split it up into individual songs. if you haven't seen it there's some great shit in there. I saw them about ten times over the years and a few times in the modern era. I still enjoy the live stuff although I miss the original Drop-D sound.
Ironhead, eh? I would love to teach it, just have to deal with the reality that I have no video production values at all. I just hit record and hope I get through the whole thing without fucking up. I will see if I can come up with a decent presentation for that song. But I can't guarantee I'll succeed! I'm certainly not holding paper charts up again. Even back in 2010 I was laughing at myself for being so antiquated.
Anyway, thanks for your comments!
@@gmoder100 just posted a play through of Turned Out and I’m happy with it. I suspect I’ll do the same Iron Head soon
Only just discovered this band and it's all the kinda riffs I like to play.
That's awesome man. back in 91 I heard Strap It On and it was a life-changing moment. My drummer and I used to spend hours playing one Helmet song after another. I have a couple of Helmet backing tracks on my channel that are fun to jam along with (bass/drums only, you add the guitar), if you want to check them out. I'm psyched for you to be discovering this band!
Cool I'll definitely check them out thanks for doing these videos
Hey thanks for responding. I think I misunderstood your comment (the internet is good for that) and I got a little testy. I do worry about whether I can get all the details covered in my humble little lesson and I guess I got defensive. But I see your point... I try to make my lessons as short as possible, and sometimes that means I stop myself in the middle of something. Anyway, peace ... and if you get anything out of my video at all, then hooray. If not, oh well I tried!
that was great man... wud u mind doin one for "sinatra"?
You really love Helmet, as do I my man, as do I.
LOL yeah sometimes i look back at these videos and laugh at myself for being such a fanboy
very nice tutorial! would you mind telling me the frets used on the intro / octave part? I'm having a little trouble getting that part to sound right
Thanks for the comment. Sadly, I am unable to tell you what the hell Page does in the intro. I tried to hear the pitches but finally gave up... I say just make some noise and have fun with it till they settle down to the main riff! Sorry!
Hey great video, I play bass and I've found very few bass videos for Meantime. I don't suppose you know what the bass is playing on the intro to this song? Cheers .
Thanks for the tutorial
You are very welcome! Have fun with it
@ifutureman its cool man thanks for the reply. but what about "wilma's rainbow" ?
I share your enthusiasm for HELMET. If we lived close I'm sure we'd play guitar for hours.
I am sure we would. You're not in NJ I guess?
Not too far away... Providence, RI!
Dang, still not very close though. Oh well...
Hey man, I just learned Unsung from you and I wanted to try my hand at this one. Do you recommend using only the bridge pickup for their other songs too, or just this one?
Well, all I can say is that their stuff sure sounds to me like both guitars are using the bridge pickup... and since Page actually removes the neck pickup from his own guitars, that's a pretty good sign that the bridge pickup is where it's at.
ifutureman Ok thanks. I've been using the middle position, but I'll try it out with just the bridge pickup. That's interesting that Page actually removes the neck pickup...any idea why he wouldn't leave it in just in case??
If you look at pictures of Page's pink-colored ESP, you can see that not only is the neck pickup removed, but also the pickup selector switch and the tone knob. So Page has only one knob on his guitar for volume. I guess maybe he didn't want to have a switch that he might unintentionally hit with his picking hand during one of his more frenzied moments. So he simplified it all by removing the pickup and control he never used. I've met him several times and talked about music and some of his songs, but I never thought to ask him about that!
"Sorry i got a little excited! I just really love helmet!" Thats great! I love them too dude. Well the first 4 albums atleast.
@mattleeb68 What can I say? My production values are unashamedly old-school. Just be glad the video's not in black and white ;)
you're quite possibly the nicest guy on the internet and these lessons are invaluable. Hope you're still rocking seven years later!
hell yeah i got something out of it! your a great player man and love your ax to man. i have a cheap $300.00 epiphone sg special butbi can make it sound like a couple thousand tho. im ok i guess i mainly play in dropped c"s, b"s,and a"s tho.
Thank you. Bit too many sheets of paper and too little playing for me though. It's easier to learn by watching and listening.
Haha, luv it. Riff 2 looks like the Matrix...
Good lesson on the riffs, but take those charts to the Bingo tournament. LOL
What year and model is that les paul? It really reminds me of one of Peter Medgede's les pauls!
It's a 2001 Standard .. it was part of a small batch of natural finish LPs they called "Raw Power". I'd never had much interest in an unpainted guitar till I saw this one :)
ifutureman awesome man! Thanks for the info dude. I've heard of that model before but have never really payed attention to them. One other question: what amp and settings are you using for this? It sounds almost EXACT for that meantime tone.
LOL I dunno man, it's just my little Marshall M-15 practice amp, and I don't recall the settings although i generally go for about 7 treble, 4 mid, and 8 bass, and presence (if the amp has it, like this one) on about 7. I use the on-board distortion. It really does sound pretty good, even at low volume.
ifutureman I bought a 50w Marshall code and the distortion sounds too thrashy and digital it's kinda disappointing. Maybe I'll get another like the one you got to jam on! Thanks man
2/23/11 - ooooh my first ever thumbs-down! If only he/she had posted something saying what was objectionable about my lesson.
Sure you put more thought into it than they ever did.
Anyway, nice job.
aww dont mean to make you mad bro! lol everytime id start playing along you would stop and pick the sheets up! lol good job tho! you know what your doing ill give you that bro! lol!!
tune ?
Not sure what you are asking. The song is in Drop D tuning, like all of Helmet's 1990's albums. DADGBE
thanks ;) that was i asked for
I quit
:(

Page does a video tutorial of "meantime"
Good work.......keep'em coming!
OK, you don't believe in sheet music or tabs. You want a "simpler" lesson, go ahead and look elsewhere. You won't find one. Maybe you can do one yourself. My tabs are exactly as complicated as the riffs are. Don't blame me because Page wrote bizarre riffs with extra beats thrown in.
man stop with the fuckin paper!!! your makin it more complicated than it is!!!!
Should 💯 make another video on this same song and break it down slowly.
How you gonna show the riff but not explain it then show us a piece of paper with nonsense on it that not all of us can read or understand.
