John Stanier's drum grooves define the alternative metal drum sound. His simplicity and flow made Helmet SO head-bobbing good.

Damn this sounds like 5 to 10 bpm slower than the record version and it's super sludge sounding. Love it.

Saw Ministry, Helmet, and Sepultura on a triple bill in December 1992. Fitchburg , MA.
Drove there from Troy, NY with a couple of buddies of mine from college. Hit a pile of chicken cages and almost went into a ditch on the way there. Some dude in a pick-up truck tied them down very poorly and lost his cargo out where there were no streetlamps. Thought I destroyed the front of my car because my lights went out, but amazingly had no damage. I must have accidentally hit the push-pull headlight switch when I slammed on the brakes.
EXCELLENT concert!! Moshed my balls off at the show (back when I still had long hair). Sweating like a pig...
It snowed so hard on the drive home I had to follow a Peter Pan Trailways bus for most of the way so I could stay in its tracks. The tires of my $300 piece-of-crap 1980 Ford Mustang were so bald I couldn't make it over the mountains (Petersburg Pass on Rt 2) because we literally started sliding backward. We had to drive further south and find a new route home. Before smart phones and Google Maps. Just guessing. Eventually ran into Route 20, which goes back to Albany from the New York/Massachusetts border.
While we driving over 50 miles out of our way in the middle of the night, out in the sticks, it was absolutely gorgeous. Like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting. Snowing such a clean snow it was almost as bright as day. We were the only ones on the road, and I could see a fucking HUGE bull elk standing a few hundred feet in front on me, smack dab in the middle of the road. I figured he would eventually take off, but he did not. Even though we were driving crawling slow, I had to feather my brakes [again, shitty tires] as we approached, and ease ever so gently around it. He had to be about 2 or 3 feet outside of my door, just standing there casually, and looking in my window with curiosity as we drove by.
    It was surreal.
When we finally got home at like 4:30am, we stopped at a Dunkin' Donuts for some snacks before I dropped my buddies off. Dunks were mostly 24 hours in Upstate New York back in the day.
Holy shit, those were some good times....

Hell of a story. I was there too that night too. It was definitely an out of the way place for a concert, but what a show! Helmet were unbelievable that night.

That tour was my first concert! I was 14, we went to the Michigan State Fair Grounds on 8 Mile in Detroit. I was blown away by how loud Helmet was. I remember the bass drum just blasting you in the chest. Will never forget that show!

The fact that it's just a bit slower than the album version somehow makes it twice as groovy.

Im 45 now, I remember seeing Helmet at Roseland Feb 10 1995 with Quicksand like it was yesterday. It was one of the most memorable moments of my childhood. They were so raw, and intense and heavy, even better live it seemed. John Stanier was such an amazing drummer, right on point and had a way of really rounding out the sound. Page is so talented as a musician.
