i am torn about wearing "weird" or "ugly" clothing to be considered fashionable. I get it, but sometimes it just doesnt feel genuine and its more like people straight up replicate what they see online. I feel like before social media being as popular as it is now people's clothing actually spoke about themselves, and you could get some idea about their music taste, etc. (for example emo, goth, western...??) but nowadays it is harder to read that becuase of the constant trend cycle. Not that experimenting with different styles is bad, but you know what i meannnn.
I know exactly what you mean. The first person wearing something unusual is being creative and playing around with style. But the next 10 people seeing the pic and replicating that same "experiment" without the intention behind it is really obvious and booooring
I didn't know there's some negativity towards tortoise shell buttons! However I majorly dislike large "gold" buttons, I think that often cheapens knitwear and blazers that would look much better with understated, neutral buttons.
im dying bc i went on the EXACT same specific leather rant in my video thats coming out in a couple days. agree w so many of these. also lolling at the word-redundancy rant, i love it
I actually hate so much when people use words as art at all times.. on clothes, as home decor (live laugh love) or as tattoos even. Words are meant to depict visual ideas, just use a symbol! Or at least pick a good font if anything.
I agree w you 100%. But when I lived in Japan, I thought, why is it that calligraphy as art is so beautiful when it's kanji and so dumb when it's the ABC's? Is it because we can't read it? Is it because kanji began as pictograms? I still ponder this.
@@thisismerying111 Unpopular opinion: even lyric tattoos make me secretly think the person's is uncreative, because they can't find a visual symbol/metaphor to represent the lyrics. Just using the words as they are feels kinda lazy, come up with a visual metaphor! Use your brain lol (PS. I would never say any of this to people with lyric tattoos, I'm only admitting it because this is an unpopular opinions themed video lol. )
@@chamomilde3140 I get that sometimes, but sometimes certain phrases and lyrics mean more to a person than an image would. Like personally, the phrase “I forgive it all as it comes back to me” means more to me than a visual image would if that makes sense
@@thisismerying111 I totally get that. Hmm if I were to think of an image to represent those words for me personally, I would get a tattoo of a tide coming in, as if it were coming back to me. I love thinking of visual metaphors for the words that mean a lot to me, it makes me feel as if my thoughts are art.
When I was 12 or 13, my dad looked at me and said to my mother, "make her go change" ... I still remember what I was wearing... Something I hate about the internet is when it makes a phrase so popular it doesn't have actual meaning anymore. Like you said, what makes something a "personal style" and not just a "style"? I think it probably had a distinct meaning when people first started saying it but it got repeated so much it turned into redundant mush.
Girl, we have very similar styles. Obviously you have your own unique ways of going about it. But when I hear you talk about fashion or see you put some outfits together I feel so validated. I’ve literally said out loud “EXACTLY!” While watching your videos 🫶🏻lol
i was literally shopping with my mum today for cardigans bc its winter here in nz, and i was like oh i love tortoise shell buttons, it adds so much character to a piece and honestly kinda gives me grandma vibes in a .. rlly good way! 🥰😌
My dad never let me wear shirts with big graphics on the front of them like band tees, kids tees with big cartoons on them, shirts with words on them, etc. because he says they’re tacky and to this day at the ripe age of 27 I own very few shirts with big graphics on the front just because that’s now always in my head. The ones I do have are usually for sleep. I don’t mind other people wearing them but I hear my dad every single time I look at one 😅
Hey Laini! I love your videos💕 i would love to see some baby outfit ideas, i think it would be sooo cute (ofc without showing the baby’s face - love that you respect their privacy)
i LOVE a good tortoise shell button! i do think there’s some that look cheap specifically on fast fashion clothes butttt tortoise shell buttons overall are classic and i will always love them lol
The problem isn't with tortoiseshell itself it is with how it is so often used as an inexpensive default option with no thought being given to how it suits the garment...not even any thought given to which tortoiseshell button to use, gloss or matte, flat or rimmed, pale or dark, the scale and contrast of the mottling etc. There's no intention there.
I have this same rant about the phrase “in my personal opinion” 😂 it’s redundant bestie. But in all seriousness, I think people use the word personal as a qualifier to stress that they’re not pushing their opinion on anyone else.
I did not find this video to be negative at all! You were just sharing your thoughts! As for the tortoise buttons I personally do not like them on myself, but thats because when I was younger I would buy any item on clearance at the mall without thought so it reminds me of how I was wasteful in buying clothes I would never even wear. The personal style thing is so true and it can become redundant. I agree that it is just style. It does not have to have personal in front of it because the word style already is individualistic. Also, the take about the links I agree soooo much. It is way better when we allow people to develop the skills needed to search for themselves. Its good when they can use the description you provide of the item to find one that is unique to them instead of having the exact same thing!
I dislike the way in fast fashion they obviously don't bother to pick the particular sort of tortoise shell button that would go best. There's quite a lot of difference in tortoiseshell buttons...and sometimes you just take one look and know that they left it totally up to the manufacturer.
About the "not everything looks good on me": I think when you wear something outside of the lines that flatter you most, it gives an intense and particular vibe. That in itself is neutral, what makes it good or bad is how the vibe of the shape matches the clothes' vibe and how you want to draw attention to your body. For me, I like to draw attention to my shoulders and make them more pronounced, it feels so fun and powerful to go into that androgynous vibe, esp with slightly dainty clothes. But the culture my mom was brought up in is very different - she never gets these outfits (she thinkss I look to manly), and that's totally fine :)
ive been trying to get over wearing graphic tees all the time because wearing words on my clothes is suddenly giving me the ick and i think it's bc of you 😂

I hate the tourtise shell buttons because they are a symbol of fast fashion. They are the cheapest to manufacture because they dont require special pigments to be mixed in. nothing wrong with tortoiseshell buttons. They dont look cheap But I like pocket t shirts. And I like pocket shirt too.
i’ve been hating for the last couple years tops & cardigans that have string ties in the middle ! the strings just sag and look so poorly made i would rather have a button or it stitched on the inside yall know what im talking about??
i agree with the boob graphic so strongly i need it centered
Does anyone know the exact model of the Vivienne westwood shirt at 8:06 ? I bought the black orb Peru shirt but it’s not as short as hers and the material seems to be thinner so now I wonder what her model is.
hi super off topic but has anyone told you sound like taylor russel ??? also so real for the tortoise shell buttons
Does anybody know where the red cardigan with the colourful buttons at 05:20 is from? Thank you!!
