Are you guys sure the comparison metrics you are using for the base PS5 performance mode are from the patched version? I find it really hard to believe it’s running at such a low internal resolution. I’m playing it on a 55 inch oled and it has none of that smeary vaseline look that Forspoken and FF16 had. It looks gorgeous. Also, if it’s dropping below 720p now, how low was it dropping when it had RT on? 360p?

Not a console issue. It's an optimization issue. There's no reason to force RT on performance mode, it could've been an option. Game could easily run a native 1440 or 1800p then PSSR can upscale it. There are plenty games that can run native 4K60 even on the base PS5, a few can run native 4K120 with Gran Turismo 7 being one of them. No Man's Sky can run 8K30, as well as GT7. IT'S NOT THE CONSOLE, is what I'm getting at..
I swear the followers of DF are so dumb, despite the fact that DF does actual good technical coverage the people who comment are incapable of basic reasoning.
The year is 2043. Alex Battaglia, the CEO of digital foundry reports on his latest DF video that the 20th anniversary edition of Jadi Survivor still suffers from travistal stutter even on his quantum computer.
I don't understand why they turned on RT for the performance mode. Just using the extra GPU power to run at a higher native resolution seems like the better choice to me. Maybe there is something I'm missing.
Remembered how Respawn modified the Source engine to give visual peoples thought that engine was incapable off producing? All while making Titanfall 2 one of the best PC ports of all time, and it even ran smooth as butter on consoles, including the OG Xbox one? Good times.
@@PursuedByAMemory they use unreal engine as every qualified game dev already knows how to use it, then they don’t have to spend time and money training people. Whereas if somebody goes and works at rockstar for example they have to learn the rage engine.
It boggles my mind that an issue I saw immediately, this sort of fizzing, flickering noise around foliage was either missed by the devs, or they chose to willingly ignore it. Worse, there’s no fallback option to the old image settings.
@@evials9123 Not even close... Elden Ring had a pretty bad start on PC and it's still not perfect but it became pretty smooth shortly after release. Also Armored Core 6 ran very well even at release.
Always RT ruining things. Framerate first, then resolution/IQ, then far far away add in RT if there is some room left without affecting the other things. This console gen was not ready for RT.
Or easily, give us the damn option to turn it off? Why cant they give us more options? Why cant we have performance mode whatever is the way sony wants, but also a perf with rt turned off? Bloody hell pc gakes can turn on and off one gazillion thing and run the game at 5fps if they want, why cant I turn off rt so it can run at a higher base resolution. Im tired of this shit.
Problem is that Sony advertised the console as being able to use quality mode settings with performance mode framerate. If we’re already seeing games struggle to do that then I worry about later in the gen
@@LOC-Ness I would rather take Fidelity mode graphics in performance mode than more RT effects in performance mode, and performance-mode graphical settings with less objects like we see in Ratchet and Clank

Extremely valid points all around. What caught me off-guard was Alex' note on the pulsating vegetation being it almost a health warning thing (I assume he's hinting at epilepsy). Damn... Honestly, PSSR seems to be hit or miss on current supporting titles. It's... a fair bit disappointing actually.
@@Parham_Esfandiari I guess it just goes to show that there is too low of an internal res for ai upscalers to do a good job. I wonder what this means for Dragon Age The Veilguard because that to is 720p, with a lowest dynamic res of 504p in its performance mode.
@@fall-neckthetallneck2977 I really don't want to defend Pro and SONY and I know PSSR still needs improvements and let's be fair even DLSS wasn't this good in it's first version, but honestly the state of PSSR in this game is more on the game itself than PSSR. Also as you said, they need to stop brute forcing low res to upscalers just to scape from increasing internal res and spend the horsepower on other things...
@@fall-neckthetallneck2977 Definitely,. I forget what it was but I remember a DF conversation about a game that was rendering internally at or around 540P and image quality was a disaster because of it. As someone who has been dabbling in video hardware and production work since the early 90's, the number one rule that applies to everything video and image related is "Garbage In. Garbage Out". That said, the things we can pull off today with low quality source material on fairly modest hardware is pretty impressive.
I think maybe the next gen of consoles and a re-release of it could fix it? 😊
Місяць тому+7
It's the software as in most of the case. Currently most games are so insanely unoptimized, wasting so much resources of your PC / console. You really can't fix software issues by just having stronger hardware. Nowadays they rush out games, later they might patch it, but usually it stays far from good.
Exactly what I was thinking, whether it's publishers pressing for an overambitious release/resource-constrained post-launch phase or just sheer developer-incompetence, I'm not so sure anymore. You don't need QA to tell you that the whole game flickers, that should be obvious straight away when implementing a feature such as PSSR. Might also be marketing pushing for the feature regardless, I don't know anymore.
EASY FIX DEVS! Remove the RT in Performance mode (like you did before!). Use those big gains to put into a resolution closer to 1440p and then PSSR will work great as it does in all of Sony's titles. Stop forcing us to use RT when everyone would take a better looking image and performance over it!
Or even simpler: Let the setting of the base PS5 unchanged and use the additional GPU power to let the dynamic resolution reaching higher values, with FSR.
The issue with you console pleabs, is that you will make statements like this because you've never had a game run a full suite of RT effects without compromise. You wouldn't be saying something stupid like this if you played on PC. Just admit your cute little Pro Machine can't cut the mustard.
@@bacardim390 Dude don’t act like your any better than this guy when you commented on Star Wars outlaws digital foundry video only a few months ago this “PLEASE. OFFER. No hate from me as I own the Pro myself but... how the hell is it possible that Silent Hill 2, Alan Wake 2 and Jedi Survivor all look worse than on the base console. The flickering and aliasing is not what I imagined when I switched to the Pro...
Question. With Pro do you still have option to select modes for base ps5? If so not a great solution, but still a solution. If not, then it is simply bed.
@@Sondisberg It's true though, they make great games in terms of story and gameplay, but regarding technical aspects they are just incompetent to deliver a polished product.
This sort of flickering is almost certainly caused by very noisy input to the upscaler. And noise comes from stochastic stuff -- most likely from RT in this case. There's always a denoiser before the upscaler, but it fails to do its job when there's high depth complexity (= foliage)
The PS5 Pro version of this game looks like a moving mosaic painting. How could they ever even think about releasing this version?> They should've stayed using FSR 2 and just upped the resolution.
It's not the console. It's Respawn and their incompetence. They might be some of the worst devs in the business when it comes to tech and optimization. Their shooting games (Titanfall and Apex) are known for tech issues and security vulnerabilities. Stuff like pro players in Apex getting hacked mid-tournament, the game itself getting hacked and having matchmaking disabled on more than one occasion, the Titanfall games being held hostage by hackers and cheaters for months (seriously, look it up). Then there's the Jedi games which were both horrible on PC and will likely remain so forever. People can't believe Survivor still isn't playable, but joke's on them because Fallen Order is still just as bad. Also, I don't know if you've seen the way they implemented FrameGen into Survivor. They didn't tune anything. It doesn't exclude the HUD and subtitles so all the graphic elements break up when you move the camera, and it even happens in the menus! Cal's head and legs multiply when going up the stairs, etc. etc. So yeah, it's Respawn. They're just the worst.
@@furytheredheadthis kind of problems are happening with other titles like alan wake 2, dragon age the veilguard, dragons dogma 2, etc. We know the console is not the problem, but that's kind of the issue with having this nonsense mid-gen refresh. There was a rumor about the version of PSSR available having "major" image stability issues just before it was revealed. And supposedly an update to the SDK came out shortly after. How much do you want to bet EA has simply failed to upgrade to the latest version of PSSR. Luckily, that means the next patch could be a major improvement 🤞
That's a big issue that I'm sure DF will mention eventually. DLSS is still getting updates to this day and users can easily update their version. Console games depend on developers for updates and they may stay with broken PSSR forever.
At this rate we ate deffo gonna need an option to just turn pssr off if it isn’t helping in some games and just benefit from slightly higher &/or more stable framerates.
The problem with turning PSSR off in a game where the internal resolution dips so low is that it's then going to look like a PS2 game. They would need to get the internal resolution higher if PSSR is going to be turned off. Which probably means turning off RT. What I don't understand is why this is an issue in the first place. The initial version of the game had RT on in Performance mode, and yes, that resulted in a pretty and inconsistent framerate in certain areas. But with the added horsepower of the Pro, shouldn't we be able to have at LEAST the same visual quality as that initial version but with a stable framerate?
They need to stop adding RT into these PS5 Pro performance modes. They're just breaking everything and making things worse. The extra power should be spent on upping IQ like with FF7 Rebirth and Stellar Blade, they're far and away the biggest jumps and they're not adding this nonsense in. Alan Wake 2 has horrible priorities too and should be focusing on a higher base resolution to upscale from. I don't want a single extra setting over the base PS5's performance modes if it's at the cost of extra upscaling IQ to make a temporally stable image and a stable framerate.
Tbh stellar blade never needed better IQ. It always looked great in balanced mode on ps5. Really nothing to complain about at all and it barely ever dropped below 60 Can't believe people actually used performance mode in that game then apparently 😂😂😂
@@ninetendopesaitama2107 No there are not. Unless you go around buying old used parts. Even then you are not getting a 7800 xt equivalent gpu in an 800$ build.
Runs pretty good on PC without image quality issues. The narrative that some have been putting out there that the PS5 pro can replace a gaming PC is just really fanboyism. PSSR is levels below DLSS, especially when trying to scale up from a really low resolution due to the aging cpu and older rdna architecture.
Honestly baffling use of the Pro in both this and AW2, I genuinely think most people would have preferred super clean image quality over some very limited RT upgrades
Remedy hate consoles isn’t it obvious?. The pc port for Alan wake 2 is excellent, then you look at the console versions that seem like they threw the modes together last minute.
I own a pro so no hating form me here but if I was told a pro patched big game would run worse and look considerably worse all while adding very little to the quality of the game I wouldn’t believe you
it will only get worse. no chance in hell this console is gonna come close to a $2500 5090 and that will only barely get you over 60 in 4k. after black myth i decided not to look back got my 4080 coming in this week.
PSSR has a lot of issues at the moment unfortunately. Ends up messing up the image quality and introducing tons of artefacts in plenty of games. So far the Pro feels like beta-testing for PS6. A shame.
I had hoped that Jedi Survivor, Dragon's Dogma 2, and Alan Wake 2 would be better with PSSR. But those three and Veilguard are the only games with issues. Every other game that uses PSSR is significantly better now, including all of the Ubisoft and PlayStation Studios games that use it, as well as plenty of third-party games. To name a few: FF7 Rebirth, F1, the Resident Evil games, Black Ops 6, Baldur's Gate 3, Hogwarts Legacy, and No Man's Sky.
@@ksadik1990There are reports that Black Ops 6 on PlayStation 5 Pro produced artifacts that ruin some levels visually. It creates bright white spots ok black backgrounds on some levels.
Making any sort of conclusion below a Jedi Survivor video about a piece of hardware is silly. I guess a 4090 isn't good either because it struggled with the game at launch.
@@chris42069 Yup, the settings chosen by the devs just are plain terrible. At the same time it kind of is machine's/closed system's fault. Imagine buying an expensive machine so as to not deal with lower res upscaling artifacts only to realize you're limited by individual dev's ability to make a good patch. Sony should have not approved this patch, it only makes their "professional" console and proprietary upscaler look much less competent even though it very much is.
@ninetendopesaitama2107 it's more that the devs didn't balance their update well. FF7R is also a newer game, using unreal engine and it's quite transformative. It isn't the CPU here that is making the water look that bad, it is the lower resolution they had to choose coz of too many RT features + PSSR.
The raytracing is too low quality anyway in this gen's consoles. Its addition is questionable even when implemented 'well' because the actual shadows, reflections etc. all have low res artifacts and it muddies the image quality.
@@setupandey4819it's not an issue in other games. But this game is doing something wrong with the implementation, so you need to switch to an old dll which tried to fix ghosting directly on the model side. Unfortunately that old dll causes other issues for me. Mainly major stuttering when going into and exiting cutscenes. So I just stopped using framegen in the game. The only game where I refuse to use framegen.
Yeah, I was stunned when I run this game on Pro... Image Quality downgrade was so obvious for me. I could not believe this was suppose to be pro experience. Terrible thing.
Every single PS5 Pro video continues to heavily disappoint. Worse image quality then the base consoles for 700$, let that roll of the tongue... PSSR is like an underbaked cookie, they should have continued the work on it and release it for PS6 so it can at least provide the same image quality as FSR (which is already bad enough) but no... Sony needed to shoehorn it in the PS5 pro so that they can present their faked specs in a more spectacular fashion. So much for the "40%" uplift in gpu performance (which is really more like 5-15%, depending on the rendering load) which consists only of very badly faked frames and puts image quality below the base consoles. Maybe that's a sign that people should stop listening to and falling for PR and marketing BS.
I wonder if Jedi Survivor will ever be properly playable. I really enjoyed the first one and have been waiting for a year for patches in the PC to buy it.
I played it at launch on PS5 and it was very much playable, I went to replay it on my PC with my new 4070 after they said they FINALLY fixed it back in September and the stuttering was still the worst I've ever seen in any game. It's actually beyond pathetic considering the IP and the money involved.
I got the game free at launch with a CPU. Played in on a 4080 and it was absolutely horrendous, dropping from 100fps down to 30 near light sources. Stuttered like a mf. Played almost a year later and performance was better (not great, 70-80fps) but still stutters and hitches like Hell. Suffered through the game to the end and honestly, didn't even like it as much as Fallen Order. Whole thing felt rushed.
I completed it on Series X. It is playable, but it's clear the hardware struggles to run the game. The game itself is absolutely phenomenal, one of my favourite games so far this gen.
I'd bet on a BEThesda style situation, where fans who love the game end up fixing the crappy code base for free, on their own time, because the devs who made it never will.
Obvious to everyone. DF also said that the cpu is not capable and the gpu is not that strong for playing newer games with 4k 60 fps. But ponys tell you it's a 4090. 😂☮️
Would've really liked to see how the XSX version compares in image quality and performance to the Pro. Is there some kind of mandate not to do console comparisons right now?
Sonyboys in the comments gonna blame everyone but not Sony who are selling a ScamPro. Without CPU upgrade there was zero reason to upgrade GPU and even that upgrade is insufficient
Survivor is one of the first games I checked out on my Pro and I noticed the PSSR flicker on grass immediately and found it a visual downgrade. I'm really surprised Respawn felt that that was shippable. It's like they flipped the PSSR ON switch and didn't bother to test it out. I hope they don't leave it this way.
I’m starting to get extremely suspicious of the delay in PS5 Pro coverage across the board and the primarily positive impressions before release. A lot of people already bought the damn thing and are stuck with it. I want access to the PS5 versions! If the Pro version is broken we shouldn’t be forced to use it.
Not be happy? The PS5 Pro is selling even better than the PS4 Pro (which was actually worth the money) at this point. They are LAUGHING all the way to the bank.

Probably because of TV size and distance? I don't think it's totally unjustified in many instances, basic sharpness and detail become irrelevant and much smaller distances than a lot of people are from their TVs, but this, this is unacceptable. I love ray tracing, but when DIGITAL FOUNDRY can't tell if you're using a specific RT effect, man, you better hope you got RT performance falling from the sky, because any performance cost for that "AO" is not worth it. And what is wrong with the baked GI? The game doesn't have a time of day system, so I can barely tell the difference. I could be convinced either way about the reflections though, as the game on PC only has one "RT" toggle, I have no idea how much of the budget is going towards it, but I could definitely sacrifice a little bit of image quality for it, if it was possible.
Mine glitched 12 hrs in couldn’t do any damage tried turning off n on then deleted n downloaded again still didn’t work 🤷🏼♂️ won’t b wasting any time on it anymore
What a pisser... literally. So far the PS5 Pro enhancements have been a real mixed bag with some game looking really great (Final Fantasy Rebirth, God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, Horizon Forbidden West - the latter two of which do not use PSSR), some good but not drastically different image quality wise to the base PS5 (Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart) and some not so great such as Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Silent Hill 2. Maybe the PS5 Pro or specially PSSR wasn't really ready to ship and developers needed more time to work on the enhancement patches. Jedi Survivor is a bit of an embarrassment though as this game shipped with tons of issues and here we are many months later and the Pro version of the game actually looks worse than it does on PS5 which isn't right at all. This highlights to me a need for the developers to retain both the original modes alongside the newly added Pro ones so people can fall back to the old modes if they choose, which would benefit from the Pro's boost mode anyway. Taking those away and offering an inferior option is not a good look for the console, especially given its price point.
The PS5 Pro was in development a little before the launch PS5s shipped, if what I've read is true. It adds very little to the PS5 experience, with not a lot of extra power, so it begs the question - what the hell were Mark Cerny and his band of merry engineers doing in that time if not developing PSSR, one of the few new features the Pro has? If it truly wasn't ready, a lot of people who worked on it don't deserve to keep their jobs.
Probably need more time. My guess is more upcoming future games will utilize pssr much much better than retrofitting older games to use it. That’s how technology normally works.
Love the talk episodes doing the hard breakdowns and side-by-sides. The hardware limitations are just...grinding. Maybe if they had DLSS's level of development... $700 for that feature with a slight quality bump--oof. By the way, in addition to the dynamic resolution, I noticed asset pop-in and LOD pop-in.
For the consoles, just get rid of the RT, bump up the resolution and add an unlocked framerate with VRR. Why keep trying to add RT with Unreal engine when most PCs struggle to run it.
i would probably rekon yes , considering how much foliage there is in those games and if PSSR is having a RT / foliage issue, can say i blame them and they did great with those titles
Can sony update PSSR via software, or is it baked into the hardware and only a new PS5 revision can improve it? PSSR seems fuzzy across most games unless you're feeding it a high internal res image to begin with.
Dear god the devs are just trolling at this point. Is there a way to force old PS5 quality mode on the Pro. Just refuse the patch and it holds the best visuals with a locked 30??
Should carry the “Pro Degraded” label instead. Note: If you run the disc version you get much closer to 1080p i performance mode, and at a stable 60. It looks way better than this failure.
Idk why UE5 gets so much hype by the general audience (Ik this is UE4 in this game), look at how happy ppl r to see halo go to UE5 yet every UE5 game has so many issues with resolution and traversal stutter. I can already imagine digital foundry doing a test where they r riding a warthog at full speed the the frametime graph and resolution is just unstable as. It’s just so predictable, same issues.
If that kind of image instability persists in other games utilizing PSSR, it's gonna make the PS5 Pro a lot harder of a sell for the people it's actually marketed towards.
PC was still the best way to go IMO. I had a good time with relatively smooth performance, using frame gen and DLSS quality at 1440p...I5-12600K and RTX 4080
Respawn, while an excellent studio otherwise, really seem to struggle with Unreal Engine. Such a shame. The game is great. Wish it wasn't let down by such persistent technical issues.
Game works great IF RT is turned off entirely on the PC specs given but with RT on it’s just still abysmal on PC. Series X I don’t have a 1440P tv but I also didn’t bother with RT on that version either. Hence I played a near locked 60 1080 on console. It’s just a damn shame because this is the greatest piece of Star Wars (anything out of the Disney era.) With Stig having left Respawn I hope they can pull the third game off and have it not be narratively atrocious. Cal’s story is better than any of the recent films. This game hell this trilogy deserves better care. I pray the 3rd game isn’t a performance mess for SO long.

No hardware on this planet can fix this game apparently
I think maybe the next gen of consoles and a re-release of it could fix it? 😊
@@MajerHawknah the current hardware is solid from both pc & consoles. Just devs being shit cans again sadly.
That's a workaround at most. PSSR HAS to work well at low resolutions. That was the whole point. These games will be running at sub 1080p.

At this rate we ate deffo gonna need an option to just turn pssr off if it isn’t helping in some games and just benefit from slightly higher &/or more stable framerates.
Yeah man like gow ragnarok has this option
The problem with turning PSSR off in a game where the internal resolution dips so low is that it's then going to look like a PS2 game. They would need to get the internal resolution higher if PSSR is going to be turned off. Which probably means turning off RT.
What I don't understand is why this is an issue in the first place. The initial version of the game had RT on in Performance mode, and yes, that resulted in a pretty and inconsistent framerate in certain areas. But with the added horsepower of the Pro, shouldn't we be able to have at LEAST the same visual quality as that initial version but with a stable framerate?
648p upscaled to 4k ? the hell. I bet it looks "amazing" on 4K tv. This is the reason people hype PS5 Pro ?
Really nothing to complain about at all and it barely ever dropped below 60

60fps > Image Quality > Ray Tracing

A "real mixed bag" for $800 is insane work.
@@NoName-qd6vp Just one game and they'll fix it no doubt about it as PSSR gets improved usage and support.
Anyone thaybthinks GOW Ragnarok looks any different is gas lighting themselves for the most part.
The gang got together, and Alex and Oliver drew the short straws on this video. 😄
For the consoles, just get rid of the RT, bump up the resolution and add an unlocked framerate with VRR. Why keep trying to add RT with Unreal engine when most PCs struggle to run it.
Damn Jedi Survivor is just a pig of a game in terms of visuals. How did they mess it up so bad
I wonder if Guerrilla games opted out of PSSR to prevent temporal instability, especially with the foliage and fine details they render.
i would probably rekon yes , considering how much foliage there is in those games and if PSSR is having a RT / foliage issue, can say i blame them and they did great with those titles
How do you mess up so bad that the base PS5 performance mode looks better than the Pro performance mode
It really doesnt but hey u can trust these guys tht record on office trash quality monitors
@teodorcaraba979 Actually I trust DF a lot, anyone paying attention does
Can sony update PSSR via software, or is it baked into the hardware and only a new PS5 revision can improve it?
PSSR seems fuzzy across most games unless you're feeding it a high internal res image to begin with.
Dear god the devs are just trolling at this point.
Is there a way to force old PS5 quality mode on the Pro. Just refuse the patch and it holds the best visuals with a locked 30??
Was wondering that myself. Maybe if you have the disc version.
And there’s no way to access the old performance mode in some of these games? If not, makes me question getting a pro.
PC was still the best way to go IMO. I had a good time with relatively smooth performance, using frame gen and DLSS quality at 1440p...I5-12600K and RTX 4080
“Worse than FSR” for 700$ 😮😮😮 LMAOOOOO
Respawn, while an excellent studio otherwise, really seem to struggle with Unreal Engine. Such a shame. The game is great. Wish it wasn't let down by such persistent technical issues.
PS5 Pro: "I am your FATHER."
PS5: "Noooooooo!!!!"
Happy I couldn't get the disc drive, because I'm having second thoughts on splashing out on a PS5 PRO, might get it later for a collectors piece:-))
Another bad PS5 Pro patch from a third party.
Game works great IF RT is turned off entirely on the PC specs given but with RT on it’s just still abysmal on PC.
Series X I don’t have a 1440P tv but I also didn’t bother with RT on that version either. Hence I played a near locked 60 1080 on console.
It’s just a damn shame because this is the greatest piece of Star Wars (anything out of the Disney era.)
With Stig having left Respawn I hope they can pull the third game off and have it not be narratively atrocious.
Cal’s story is better than any of the recent films.
This game hell this trilogy deserves better care. I pray the 3rd game isn’t a performance mess for SO long.
Yea the game is awesome and the story is amazing. Epic set pieces too. Its just technically a mess because they had to use UE5
If they used a good engine they would've been fine
@@HugoStiglitz88I’d agree if I knew anything about game engines. It’s just a shame very least it’s playable if you just completely turn off the Ray tracing as of the latest patch for PC.
I have played it twice all the way through it’s way better looking in 1440 but I can’t say that I was upset with 1080 either
@@HugoStiglitz88it's UE4
@HugoStiglitz88 it's running on UE4
This game really struggles hard to survive.
I see what you did there
@@shreder75 This is not the survivor you are looking for.
@Marsson90 I've got a bad feeling about this
It doesn't Survive, on some mode it simply Jedies.
Did they bother to test these games before launching the console?!
Jedi survivor is the Sonic ‘06 of this generation
Pay $800 for worse image quality, no thanks!
After your recent videos, i have 0 enthusiasm for ps5 pro.
