This basically cements the fact that I'll just stick with the Base PS5. The Pro for me costs $950 (stand, optical, tax inc). That's a lot of money for such a marginal uplift. $950 would allow me to move from AM4 to AM5 (mobo, memory, even more storage inc). Which would net me more of an uplift in gaming on the PC than the 5>5 Pro. I think what hurts the 5 Pro the most is it having the same CPU as the base 5. The extra GPU power is great, but it's being kneecapped with the same Zen 2 CPU architecture. Really great in depth review though.

What you said about physical vs digital pricing is always overlooked for some reason, glad you said it. I used to have one or two games at a time and trade them in when done. Brand new releases a few weeks afterwards are still worth most of the price so my cost was actually less than 50% of sale price, and significantly less than digital. When in reality digital should be cheaper because there are no manufacturer and distribution costs.
Horrible example lol. People using the used option selling games is what directly led to microtransactions, seasons and mandatory dlc to get the whole game. You can't sell dlc used generally, not a coincidence 😮
Printing discs is not expensive so manufacturing costs don't matter in the physical vs digital debate. Digital games don't magically appear on your PS5, they still have to be distributed via their servers so those costs are still there, just at a different place. If you buy a PS5 pro, play a couple of games and then sell it, you can get most of the cost back. So your cost is actually less than 50% of sale price, and less than the regular PS5 price. Does that mean we can just consider the PS5 Pro to be a cheap alternative to the regular PS5, because you can sell it and get most of the money back?
DSC isn't "lossless" it's "visually lossless" meaning that MOST people can't spot a difference. But some can (basically a non-issue for game consoles).

You guys don't pay attention. There was a review embargo lifted for unboxing the pro before the embargo was lifted for console reviews. Maybe a day or two between the releases. That's why there were different videos coming out.
For the 2nd time in a row we get a new piece of hardware….. that we can play OLD games at less than 60fps. The cpu limitation section of this video was very enlightening.
If the ps5 pro had gotten a CPU upgrade equivalent to the ps4 pro it might have been worth it. As it stands, with no CPU upgrade, no disc drive, and no stand, it's not worth it at all. The PS6 will be out in roughly 3 years. I bet the Ps5 pro won't even support GTA 6 60 fps otherwise what will be the incentive to sell the ps6? People need to wake up and stop rewarding these corporations just because they CAN afford something. This is why we get scammed.
This is very niche but thank you for mentioning that you can just pop in the M.2 SSD from a standard PS5 and games will be instantly playable one the Pro. This is the kind of attention to detail we come to Digital Foundry for. 😊
@@spenny2centsthat’s not the point, the point is it was suppose to be optimized for the pro and that isn’t the case. What other games are “optimized” for the pro , and not having performance issues???

8k is pretty much pointless now. Even if you could forsee, I suspect least a decade more from now to have remote access for such high res. 4k is still demanding and that top of the line GPU like 4090 sweats. Now devs don't help in this case either by putting out un-optimized messes.
I was a huge PC gamer in the early 2000s but also had a PS1 and PS2, in 2008 I got an X360 (what a great era!!) as a christmas present and since then I went to console gaming. PS4 and PS4 Pro afterwards and my friends and I were HYPED for the "next gen" PS5... after 3 years of rather disappointing performance and visuals many of us stepped over to PC Gaming again. And yeah, what can I say: Ryzen 7, RTX 4070 Ti, 32GB DDR5 RAM, 4TB SSD, mechanical keyboard , a great mouse and a 240Hz WQHD OLED monitor were the fkn best investment I have made in the recent years. Playing on PS5 here and there but I just can't really enjoy it anymore. The PSN store is an atrocity and Steam is the absolute superior platform PLUS almost every game supports DualSense or XBOX controllers without any problems. Win/Win. PSSR however seems to be a great technology and I am curious what it will deliver in the future.
I remember when they first introduced the pro and I said it’s not worth $700 unless you’re a hardcore gamer and all the visual intricacies are that important to you. Visually is not that much of an upgrade and some people probably won’t even be able to tell the difference and you have to pay extra for the Disc drive also. Don’t fall for the shiny new toy. Save your money and enjoy the standard PS5 until the PS6 comes out. This is what these guys are basically telling you without actually telling you.
If you're a hardcore gamer and visual intricacies are important to you, you'd get a PC. I don't understand who they made the PS5 Pro for at that price point.
@@spenny2cents A lot of people can afford it. It’s just if you visually can’t see the difference that much then there’s no point in getting a pro when you can get the standard model for cheaper
Great review video. However, it is a bit disappointing to hear that the best image quality (by far judging by the praise) is for two Horizon games that don't even use PSSR. It somehow undervalues the usefulness of PSSR much in the same way as checkerboard rendering on PS4 Pro, which most developers ended up not using despite being a hardware feature, I believe.
Are you seriously complaining about PSSR which is a hardware based AI Upscaler (like DLSS) that will quite literally only get better with time the more it’s utilized… did you have the same disappointment with DLSS 1.0? And if yes do you feel stupid now after it’s developed into better than native in some games?
Yeah, the base PS5 is a tricky one. It technically can play 8k video playback. The game called The Touryst is technically a 1 to 1 8K pixel count on PS5... Still rubbish to even put it on the box lol
I’m glad John touched on the unboxing. Opening a Series X feels like an experience. When I’ve opened my PS5’s my mind wonders if the thing got damaged in shipping for how flimsy it is. =.=;
A part of that is because Atlus, bafflingly, didn't include any native AA solution in the game, and also because the upscaling solution used seems to be pretty outdated (billinear interpolation, if I had to guess). As a result, it already doesn't look great at native 1650p due to all the jaggies, and upscaling that to 2160p really doesn't do it any favours.

Because From Software is a bunch of guys who don't know what optimization is and don't care about us. You just buy the disc addon as I did - for me as my main gaming platform its still worth the cash when I just sold my PS5 for half the cost of my Pro price it was worth it. I don't use the stand though I've always had my PS5 laid down.
If that's really your only issue, then you should reconsider. The disc drive is extremely easy to install. It took under 10 minutes, and some of that was unboxing it and watching a quick YT video of how to do it. (It only involved popping the old panel off, lining up connections with disc drive and setting it into place, then putting on new panel that comes with drive.). I think the price of the drive is even slightly cheaper than the difference between digital and disc base versions of PS5 base model.
@TurdF3rguson Its not the only issue. The main one is the cost vs hassle of selling my perfectly good expanded HD PS5 OG 2TB. It runs perfectly and there's just not enough reason to chance blowing such money on a system with such relatively marginal gains. There's enough power with PS5 it just needs the games. Hardware isn't the issue.
@@bushkilla7348 I was responding to your original comment that exclusively called out the disc drive issue which is easily resolved. But that’s a completely fair take if you just don’t feel like the graphics boost is worth the cost and the hassle of selling the old one.
Great idea with splitting up the review between the three of you guys. Very thorough and super quick to upload the review too since the release of the PS5 Pro. In Russia it costs 1350 USD without disk drive. Thanks to parallel import. And mind the salaries are much lower here than in the West. In province people typically get 200-250 USD for a full-time job.
- 420€ more expensive than the base model (Almost 2x, base model being 500€) - 15 to 20% more raw performance (Nothing like the promised 60% nor the rumored 300% boost) - PS4 Boost is just a sharpness filter (Your TV has one already) - No new games to pick up with the console I was extremely excited about getting it and leaving my PC strictly for work, but seeing this I think I'll save the money and just invest it in a new GPU when my 3080 is not enough for my needs anymore. This PS5 Pro is so underwhelming that I almost feel relieved it's so disappointing, watching a few videos completely eliminated the hype and the FOMO for me.
It would certainly be about preservation for me - I have exactly 50 PS4 games on my shelf. Why the hell would I NOT want to be able to play those on a PS5??? Forgetting to include an optical drive is a massive misstep.
I'd say fast action games like DMC4 and 5 benefit from >60FPS framerates. Having played a bit of that docked on Steam Deck, it does give a slight benefit (even if not very stable on Deck specifically).
I think too many people get caught up in "testing" and "numbers" after watching all the DF content leading up to getting mine. I was thinking, errr? But now, after having mine for 2 days and going over the games that I play on the regular, i can now say yes, it's worth it for me. Everything i've played on the Pro machine is better looking and smoother. Even unpatch stuff like Helldivers2 is silky smooth now and looks better. In short, forget the tech specs, and numbers dont overcomplcate it. Im happy with my purchase because the games I play perform better.
Like rich said, it's for those who can tell a difference and have spare funds to get absolute best out of a console. Most probably people with ps5 not gonna bother, unless they want every bit of that extra performance & naturally PSSR.
Why do they say the Pro is silent? That's not true. It's at least twice as loud as the original PS5 and a lot of people confirmed it, so it's not just my Pro.

So essentially, consoles are now at a point where you get less (around 30% more performance) for more (75% price increase over a PS5 DE) after 4 years of the original PS5 being on the shelves. Based on pure performance, the absence of the disc drive and the fact that it has been 4 years, Pro should be cheaper than the launch model, which should be $350 tops currently.
Inflation and moores law my friend. It actually costs more to manufacture a ps5 then it did 4 years ago. You cant expect prices to go down if prices to manufacture have gone up. Great review, lots of interesting information. While in certain scenes it can look great. Would appreciate you looking at it, keep up the great work.
Most of the time upscaling tech actually improves the image. Like DLSS does. I don't know about PSSR yet, only tested a couple of games so far, but it's looking light years better than FSR.
Why is that unbelievable? The console standard has been 30 fps for ~20 years. A new console gen can deliver _either_ next-gen games at 30 fps _or_ same-gen games at 60-120 fps. But absolutely not _both._ That would require _far_ more hardware power than is possible to deliver. If that's important to you, I suggest ditching Big Console and embracing PC. Because like it or not, it's the Great Consolization of 2008 that has held back gaming. If the Great Consolization never happened, games would be far more exciting --- in graphics, physics, sounds, _gameplay_ --- and _you_ would choose whether you wanted to play them at 30, 60, 240+ fps and 640x480, 1920x1080, 3840x2160+, etc. depending on how much money you wished to spend on your hobby. I really want to know about the combo ps5pro + psvr2

Why remove the option from those that really like visual fidelity? Not all games need the smoothness of 60. You could also use your TV's Motion Interpolation to boost the 30FPS to 60FPS, to achieve improved fidelity/draw distance/resolution at the cost of some artifacting.

God of War is currently $50 on steam. $20 on PSN.
Steam must not have gotten the memo.
Kinda slow @someguyusa
Horrible example lol. People using the used option selling games is what directly led to microtransactions, seasons and mandatory dlc to get the whole game. You can't sell dlc used generally, not a coincidence 😮
@@someguyusa Which God of War? Because Ragnarok only released in September on Steam

Simple way to check if you PS5 supports 8K:
If it says 8K on the box, it doesn't not support 8K
If it doesn't say 8K on the Box, it does support 8K
Awful way to figure that out. Ps5 stopped putting 8k on the OG ps5 box mid way through the console life.
8k at 160p internal res
@@ThatVSMBro Then only the launch models support 8K. It's in the box, you can't deny it. The PS5 Slim doesn't have it. The Pro doesn't have it. Only the launch unit has. Therefore, only the launch model supports 8K, none of the others do. I mean, would Sony lie to us?

60 everywhere except for one or two areas it goes to 57 = hilarious
A part of that is because Atlus, bafflingly, didn't include any native AA solution in the game, and also because the upscaling solution used seems to be pretty outdated (billinear interpolation, if I had to guess). As a result, it already doesn't look great at native 1650p due to all the jaggies, and upscaling that to 2160p really doesn't do it any favours.

Nothing wrong with that the base is a great console the pro is for hardcore fans of PlayStation. It’s not for everyone
@TurdF3rguson Its not the only issue. The main one is the cost vs hassle of selling my perfectly good expanded HD PS5 OG 2TB.
You're just not used to it because this is the first time in history old chips cost more to make instead of less. Can't blame Sony, i mean look at microsoft, the xbox series x hasnt come down in price either.
@@TheEPICskwockAre you sure. 4 years ago we were in covid times
@@helloguy8934 both digital foundry and moores law is dead (youtube channel) have videos on it. Basically the price of silicon has gone up, with if you aren't familiar silicon is an essential part of making chips. Demand is higher then supply, demand keeps going up while supply stays the same, this causes the cost of manufacturing chips to shoot up. AMD, intel, microsoft, sony, apple, samsung, LG, ect. No one is safe from this. There is just wayyyy too much demand for silicon now considering everyone and their mama is needing chips at this point
neither moore's law have anything to do with the price of any electronic nor inflation justifies the lack of performance in the pro model
it seems they have prioritized thermals and size and its the first generation that they arent getting the revenue in game sales to overcome the manufacturing loses in the consoles itself@@TheEPICskwock
@@TheEPICskwock I don't want to take moore's law is dead's word.
100% agree resist going digital if you can. Dont let Sony, MS or nintendo control the market in a closed off digital only system
What we need are better API's and better rendering engines. Microsoft and Sony should spend their 100s of millions on that instead of crap like Concord
What we need is the first AAA PC game engine since CryEngine 2 (Crysis (2007), Crysis: Warhead (2008)).
@@bricaaron3978 At multiplatform games pc is weakest. You dont undestand that series s is moe capable that min spec pcs?
@@борисрябушкин-з9н A _mid-range_ PC is _far_ more powerful than the best console (Series X).
> Faster GPU
> MUCH faster CPU
> At least 28GB total RAM compared to 13GB

That's a _mid-range_ PC...
Keeping the same CPU as the base PS5 was a huge mistake, charging so much with just a GPU upgrade is stupid.
The REAL review we've been all waiting for!
Sony is asking for a higher % increase in £$€ than the actual raw % performance increase, and they're banking on making it up with AI image reconstruction, which has artefacts. Sad times for gaming tech.
You're forgetting that the console also has upgrades to other things like wifi 7 and some other stuff. The price isn't really that bad for what you're getting. Especially with the global inflation.
99% of consumers wont benefit from wifi 7 unless they have a expensive wifi 7 router and a 5gigabyte download speed internet plan lmaoo@@someguyusa
@@someguyusa No Bluray Drive. Wifi, seriously? Inflation? I'm comparing it to the current PS5 I own and is still available at that price.
@@someguyusaHow much of a fanboy are you
@@VonDutchNL I also have a gaming pc, so maybe you should use your brain and make an argument instead of spouting stupid rhetoric.
20 years from now, we're gonna look back and say, "Wow, the ps5 pro was as low as $700" 😅 after buying a $1300 ps8
controllers and hdmi cable sold separately
With inflation you can expect a lot more than $1300. Anyway, who knows? Maybe Galactic Credits by then!
Thanks fellas
I appreciate your work, and its made my decision to wait
Oh christ, wish Sony would just F off with the "8K" stuff. Make stuff run at 60+ on lower resolutions first.
What's hilarious is all the people that preordered are waiting to get them delivered. I can just walk into my local Target right now and buy one 😆
you can still do that?
@@javierf6162Yes Sony limited pre orders to one console per person cause scalpers. Not to mention a lot of ppl are just straight up not buying one which leaves more stock on shelves
Why it's bad to be excited? I did pre-order and receiving mine tomorrow!
Just walk in to Best Buy and get today
@@anssiaatos because unless you didn't have a ps5 already, you've pretty much been scammed. Hell I'd even argue that you should've just bought a ps5 digital for 400 and saved 300 bucks.
For GBP 700 ( GBP 800 with bluray and stand) should have been flawless, not a merely 30% performance gain....
Also in some games (like Allan Wake II), PSSR is worse than FSR. The PSSR has major issues, with pixels noise/ crawling
I do not want to pay GBP 700-800 in order to be a beta tester for the PS6`s PSSR, so I will skip this "upgrade"
You know it's gonna be a great video when all three of these guys all appear together.
Yeah, I think the PS5 was the last console I'll ever buy. With the rising cost of PC GPU's and the games appearing there in my Steam forever-library, I just don't see the point anymore. I'll just keep up with their excellent controllers.
Except they'll still get you with stick drift.
@@GENKI_INU I used a ps4 controller excessively for about 4 years before stick drift set in. You will always have to replace your things at some point. $60 every 4 years is a pretty nice in my eyes. Can't speak on the ps5 controller though. I heard it's worse.
@@蓮90it's trash if compared to PS4 controller.
The biggest weight difference is the drive isn't on the Pro, put that on and it's a closer comparison.🤷♂
Yes digital one ps5 compared

They don't. You just seem to think old means something it does not.

Does the optical drive require an online connection to be used all the time or is it just required for the initial installation?
The audacity to release one without a disc drive then charge extra for a drive. We truly are living in dark times. Not buying!
I cant believe the HDMI output is still capped at 32gb on the Ps5 Pro 😢
Thats sony
Yeah, all that data we send over the network with our HDMI cables is seriously gimped. Oh the humanity.
I love the show and the channel!!!
Key note here, no game changing improvements and no disc drive.
What is game changing improvement? Upgrading from 2080 to 4080? I dont think so.
I'd say PSSR is only something really considering about this machine. RT is essentially a niche feature.
After 50h of Metaphor Refantazio, thank you for now making me notice it’s not running optimally on my PS5 😂
I still have 30+ hours to go 😅
😂
John's evaluation at the end is very strange. Focused on packaging, the system transfer that most people won't see due due to selling their base PS5, and mentioning the CMOS battery, but nothing on if the game improvments are worth the steep price?
Think that says it all tbh…the performance is not good enough to warrant the price so he has to focus on something insignificant.
@@npc2k Seriously! Wait a month or so that 3th party devs catch up that PS5 Pro is already here! Most games needs patches to improve performance and to add PSSR into it!
@@XPuntarthey didn't bother with PS4 Pro propietary render system before I don't think their bother doing that for PS5 pro either...
1:07:50 quite literally straight after talking about the packaging, he talks about how the ps5 pro is probably not worth it unless you're heavily into the details of console gaming tech.
Great review, lots of interesting information. The one game I was hoping you would take a look at was Star Wars Outlaws, it’s probably one of the only games on the base PS5 that I think struggles, the image quality often appears low-res, with artefacts or harshly banded colour gradients in open areas. While in certain scenes it can look great. Would appreciate you looking at it, keep up the great work.
Just canceled my preorder. Honestly its a bit lackluster for 700 i can almost replace my game library on pc and get leave the ps ecosystem
Just bought your pre-order, thanks for freeing it up!
@spenny2cents np enjoy
1:05:57 Olie's reaction was worth watching this video for
8k talk are you dudes serious? Consoles haven't even proven to give US a stable 60fps without some upscaling tech that destroys the image.
Many games that run at stable 60 at native resolutions
Who actually owns an 8k TV? Lol
There are no games that run at native 8k or even upscaled to 8k.
@jeradfry345
Name a few triple-A titles. I'm not talking about indie games.
Most of the time upscaling tech actually improves the image. Like DLSS does. I don't know about PSSR yet, only tested a couple of games so far, but it's looking light years better than FSR.
Thanks! Great Review and breakdown
Rich, with the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra as his main phone. My man knows good stuff! I'm on the S23 Ultra and it's still a powerhouse for years come.
We need that disc drive to play our old ps5 disc games. That console is way to expensive for a 30-40% performance uplift.
Unbelievable that in 2024, no console can run all games at a minimum of 60. FPS.
It's literally not the hardware's problem though. It's always based on how ambitious developers want to be on their games.
We still have that of course, but nothing like it could have been and should have been.
Honestly it's not that bad - you've got Gotham Knights, the Until Dawn remake and Dragon's Dogma 2 but nothing particularly notable other than those
19:10 not even 60 fps in performance mode...
thats the most senseless console of all time
No, it isn’t. Depends on how the game is developed and what the developer wants.
Thank You for details!
For this price I could buy a PS5 and a 6800 to upgrade my PC.
