George H Those ignorant voters just couldn't grasp how wonderful the Obama's were, I guess. She turned me off with her constant whining; "I've never been proud of my country till now" (because they finally voted her husband in) and "every morning I wake up in a house built by slaves" ( which is untrue because the British burned the first White House.) I thought, you are the most pampered woman in America, fabulous trips at taxpayers expense, designer clothes at you beck and call, a White House chef to make you anything you want at any time of day, exclusive private school for your daughters, big lavish parties with any star you want, etc., etc. Just an outrageous thing to say.

If you want progressive change, you HAVE to start at the local level and rise those people up (e.g. AOC) but that can't happen when people are apathetic or selfish. Starting at the top does give you establishment Dems but that's on the people who decide to be lazy and not vote in state and local elections--just wait around every four years and rally behind their messiah of the moment. So many people have literally lost their lives because people in those key states didn't have the foresight to vote for someone who would elect liberal justices and NOT separate children at the border. Someone who WOULD have started taking action on the virus in January.
It's disappointing to see how many "progressive" people vote against progress because they can't put their big boy pants on and REALIZE that their actions don't just affect them in their privileged bubble but actively hurt the most vulnerable people among us.

I'm always baffled that people give Obama credit marriage equality when he ran against it in 2008, and only evolved on it in 2012 to the point of "it should be left to the states to decide." Marriage equality was achieved by grass-roots efforts that drug Obama a little bit toward their side. And even after marriage equality, it is still legal federally to discriminate against LGBTQ people in jobs, housing, etc.

Both parties cover one or the OTHER side of gun regulation, abortions, LGTBQ rights, and both use identitiy politics (racism is a form of that - and it is useful for divide and conquer, which the donors also like).
The big donors do not care about the outcomes on these issues, it does not cost them anything. If their daughters or mistresses need a safe abortion they can fly to another country, or bribe a doctor in the U.S.
There is a segment of the population that is out of reach for Republicans.
If ONE of the parties does not resist gay rights (after the grassroots have fought for it) they can try to attract that segment of voters, occupying one side of the issues provides the "left" veneer.
Mind you, they would never sacrifice political capital on it (see Hillary Clinton, or Biden), but they allow for progress on the "cheap" societal issues after someone else won the uphill battle.
Not on weed, it is still classified on the FEDERAL LEVEL as schedule 1 drug. The only other one: Heroin. Weed is supposed to be as dangerous, addictive, and w/o medical value as heroin. Under Nixon that classification as (schedule 1) started.
Carter may have been a man of his time, and brainwashed into the fear of drugs so he did not correct that (he made mistakes but he was not corrupt, or unwilling to do the hard and unpopular thing) - but Bill Clinton and Obama KNEW from experience that classification was nonsense.
But there were big donors that had an interest to keep that substance illegal - so of course they chose to NOT be "progressive" on that.
Plus selfish, affluent people, who are educated enough that they do not want to be lumped together with evangelicals and openly racist people .
For them a rightwing neoliberal party that they do not need to be ashamed of, because it does not deny science (they just do not act on the findings) is very convenient.

Yeah, his "yes we can" quickly turned into "we can but we won't" as soon as his ass was in the Oval Office. The first black POTUS, and he turned out to be a sham. His 'legacy', which he seems so eager to preserve, can only be summed up with one word: disappointment.

I think most of us subconsciously (or consciously) affiliated "hope and change" with the superficial things of skin color and cognitive intelligence.
The Obamas have been a good thing in that they have been a wake-up call to all of us: People are just people. Politicians are just politicians. And we need to do the work of looking deeper than what a politician looks like and what he/she says.
Michelle calls black people, “our people”. And people thought they’d be uniting. Not so much when you consider blacks as monolithic.
Assuming if they have a different opinions that they can just be disregarded.
Politically, we ARE a monolith, and have been so for decades. Unfortunately, we never seem to wield that in a different direction in our favor.

I never did understand the protracted glorifications she got either. Yes, she's the first African-American First Lady. Congress' Archives shall ensure that she will always be remembered as such. And I admire her push to get African-Americans to go to college. Other than that, the bulk of the apotheosis screams an overt neoliberal polish job.
