- How Strong is the Philippine Military: Enough to Counter China?
The Philippines maintained its military strength with a power index of 0.4691 on the 2024 Military Strength Ranking, issued by Global Firepower. The Philippines landed at 34th spot globally considered as a middle power, with gains in military capability, the Philippines ranks 14th in Asia and 5th among the ASEAN 6.
The Military manpower is one of the few categories which the Philippines has an exceptional power index score. The country has total military personnel of more than 1,385,000, ranked 14th globally.
The Philippines’ strongest measure is defense networks, outpacing its regional peers, where it places ninth, reflecting the extent of its bilateral military cooperation with treaty allies with the United States. The score for defense networks is measured by a country’s regional alliances, global defense partnerships, and regional defense diplomacy.
The Philippines also exerts more influence in the region than expected given its available resources, as indicated by the country’s positive power gap score.
The Asia Power Index also reported the Philippines posted gains in diplomatic influence, which refers to a country’s diplomatic network, multilateral power, and its foreign policy thrust
In addition, the countries hold high-level bilateral, and plurilateral defense diplomacy meetings, include the US, Australia, Japan, India, Israel, South Korea, France, Germany and other western allies.
The increase in the Philippines’ overall military strength is due to its modernization efforts. The Armed Forces of the Philippines is currently undertaking a modernization program, with countries such as France, Israel, and India, offering to give new technology to the country.
Its ongoing modernization efforts are allowing the Armed Forces of the Philippines, in fulfilling its mandate of protecting the nation, and the people, including safeguarding the country's sovereignty.
The Mutual Defense Treaty between the Republic of the Philippines and the United States of America, signed in 1951, serves as a foundation for the close security cooperation between the two countries. Seventy-two years after its signing, the alliance continues to thrive in the ever-evolving security environment that surrounds the Philippines.
The US-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty evolved into the 1998 Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), and the 2014 Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA).
The VFA provides the legal basis and status protections for U.S. military and Department of Defense civilian personnel in the Philippines on official business. While EDCA authorizes U.S. forces to access of agreed locations in the Philippines on a rotational basis, for security cooperation exercises, joint and combined military training activities, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief activities.

The shipbuilding industry in the Philippines has been active for quite some time, with a focus on constructing smaller vessels like ships and catamarans, primarily for the international market. Starting in the late '90s, the Philippines capitalized on its strategic location, skilled workforce, and lower labor costs to establish itself as a competitive player in the global shipbuilding industry. While initially focusing on smaller vessels, the industry has been aiming to expand its capabilities. This includes the ambition to build larger and more complex military vessels and submarines, as part of the country's broader efforts to modernize its military capabilities and assert its maritime sovereignty, especially in light of the strategic importance of regions like the South China Sea. The shift towards more advanced and larger-scale domestic shipbuilding projects reflects a strategic move to enhance national security, reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, and potentially stimulate local industries and job creation.
The MD-500 attack Chopper is the most deadliest of the Philippines Military, it can fly under the jungle to find enemies The most used in Philippines Military operations, i think.
So, hoping AFP will buy more MD-500.
It was already replaced by a more advanced and powerful attack helicopter the "T-129 ATAK Attack Helicopter", and MD -Defender is already obsolete.
Actually it is about to be replaced by the AW-109 light attack heli's, due to old age and it's already obsolete as well, and we do have the T-129 B ATAK, and Cobra attack Heli's as well, and PAF has plans too to acquire additional units of it. It is a legitimate attack Heli's too, and the most lethal Attack heli's of the PAF, and PAF is planning to acquire at least a squadron of heavy Attack Heli's in Horizon -3, the best bet was the Apache from US. So PAF can have a more strike capability as well.
Let's leave the Attack Heli's to the PAF, but Phil. Army and Phil. Marines should get a 24/48 units of S70 i Armed Black Hawks, it's more fittingfor them, to have a multi- role and multi-function heli's that can be modified in any combat situations and missions. But still has the firepower to protect and defend itself and can also provide enough firepower for ground support in any given day or night.
It was started by the late, good President Ninoy Aquino, and the good President Marcos is really doing his best to upgrade all equipment of the AFP.

Due to constitutional restraints my friend, our law only permits brand new procurement and we all know how quality the Western arms are and how goldier to buy their arm are😅. Last year, the US DS permitted the selling of used fighter jets. but the Phils. is legally impotent to procure those assets. Right now, there are moves in both senete and Congress here to amend our constitutional-economic provision including the provision that I told you above. We are hopeful.

AFP is lack of major military weapons. We need weapons that adds to attack capability of our army. And we need a lot of medium to long range ballistic missile weapons. This is based on what I saw that would keep our military might.

GFP does not know how to count the current inventory of PAF's attack helicopters for the past years. They always stick to 2 AH when in truth and in fact, PAF has now 8 AH in its inventory.

We need New Military War Machine not yung pinag lamaan ng Iba Bansa! Like Attack Craft 36 /Units; Gripen 36 Units; Unit F16, 24 Units; Submarines 2 to 6 Units; Attack Helicopters 24-36 Units; Frigate 12-18 Units.
Just by ASEAN comparison alone, the Philippines' military power lags by far measure. Even Myanmar's military is stronger. Military purchases are quite snail-paced. The measly percentage of military defense spending to GDP is quite low (1% in '22). The answer? ... at least right now, NOT powerful at all.

We have enough military soldiers but lacks of large weapon artilleries, aircraft, combat vessels and also messiles/rockets.
Philippines should spend more money for Coast Guard instead of Navy like Vietnam. This force is more important than military due to the fact that the probability of a total war in the South China Sea is quite low, while the Coast Guard must operate with much higher intensity.

Bullying and harassments is rising all time high, Chnia's dloyments of Warships, CCG vessels, and Hundreds of Chinese Militia Vessels are very high, even US can give true facts anout Chinese interventions, and aggresssions towards Filipino vessels and Fishermen, and a War can broke any time of the day.!!! That's why we are up grading, and asking for International help from right minded Friends and Allied Countries, who supports and backing us up against China's Military Aggressions...
