How Pasig River Bring Back-to-life | Once Tagged as Most Polluted River to Become a Tourist Spot

- From the success of Boracay Rehabilitation in 2018, and Manila Bay Rehabilitation in 2019. The Philippine Government once again opened a new tourist spot, that succumbed to environmental degradation. The overly polluted river system in Metro Manila was once tagged as the country’s most polluted water system in the 1990s.
The Pasig River Rehabilitation reached a new level of success story, from reviving its biological life in its network of creeks and rivers, and winning the 2018 Asian RiverPrize award, to becoming - - the newest tourist spot in the metro.
The rehabilitation of the Pasig River may finally be realized under the administration after many similar efforts in the past. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. promised his administration's urban project to revitalize Pasig River would be a people-centered and community-driven development.
Marcos made the statement as he led the inauguration of the 500-meter showcase area of the Pasig River Urban Development project in Binondo Manila, behind the gutted Manila Central Post Office. The newly constructed segment will serve as a public park consisting of a pedestrian-friendly walkway on a concrete platform equipped with a water fountain accented by lighting, and sitting areas that can also serve as an open-air venue for events.
The project follows Marcos' Executive Order No. 35 issued in July 2023 creating an inter-agency council that facilitates the rehabilitation of the Pasig riverbanks and water system.
The Philippine Government through the Department of Housing and Urban Development is eyeing to build a 50-kilometer promenade spanning both sides of the Pasig River in three years, funded through public-private partnership. The total cost for constructing the promenade is pegged at around ₱18 billion.
Recreational and wellness amenities such as public parks and jogging and bike paths will also be constructed in key areas along the 27-kilometer stretch of the river, which traverses 11 cities in the metropolis. The area will become a permanent exhibit area of green technology that works from solar lights to rain harvesting facilities - sustainable practices like urban gardens. This will also want to maximize the ready-to-use maritime highway by deploying more ferry boats and stations.
The Pasig River system is a strategic and environmentally endangered waterway. Winding through the most densely populated areas in the country’s National Capital Region, the river links Manila Bay in the west with Laguna Lake in the east.
However, the Philippines’ 27-kilometer Pasig River, and its vanishing networks of creeks and rivers, tell a captivating story, of a river system that refuses to die.
After years of uncontrolled urbanization and heavy industrialization on its riverbanks, the Pasig River lost its importance, as a vital waterway and has become the subject of many efforts for rehabilitation, and preservation. When it was declared biologically dead in the 1990’s.
Several river restoration initiatives began as early as the 1970’s but no visible result has been delivered. In 1999, the government created the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission, to spearhead and harmonize the multi-faceted, and comprehensive rehabilitation of the Pasig River, through collaboration with its stakeholders.
The urban river management for Pasig River will expand its restoration effort by creating the comprehensive Pasig River Urban Development project. To become more spatially coherent, to accommodate multi-scale solutions, and to ensure land-based development performance is at par with environmental quality requisites.

I'm British and will soon be proud to live in the Philippines. In my country, there are many voices complaining about environmental matters. These voices always accuse others of causing the pollution, littering and fouling of nature. But they never take affirmative action. They just complain.
The entire world needs to learn from the Philippines that governments can take charge of a situation, but that it is People Power that will get the job done. Manila Bay, Boracay and the Pasig River would never have been cleaned up without the Filipino people taking responsibility for the work required.

Pasig River and Manila Bay are 2 projects which my father is currently overseeing. It really takes a lot of political will to make these projects successful and sustainable as there will always be criticisms from several groups of people.

The project was started in the 90's when the President is Mr. FIDEL V. RAMOS. His wife Mrs. MING RAMOS is the one who started the cleaning of the Pasig river. And then the late Ms. Gina Lopez.

kudos to the Duterte and Marcos Administration for this continous effort on Pasig River, as a Chinoy living in Binondo I can say how both admins changed the view of the said river. Please continue to improve ☺️
I would love to see Manila back on its feet. The old Manila i know was bustling with activity. I just wish, Binondo should also reflect Filipino Culture not just Chinese. Both could co-exist. Lots of Pinoys would appreciate that. I don't need to remind you of our current spat with China. If that happens, i'm sure local tourist in the Metro would visit Binondo more often.

It is no longer a plan of Marcos Administration, it is already happening. This is not just ningas kugon and "clean up drive" like the project of past admin. And most important, the funds for this project of Pasig Bigyang Buhay Muli doesn't come from government fund but donations from private individuals. KUDOS PBBM and FL Lisa for this initiative.

I give them all credit for continuing this project but the most notable work was from President Marcos. One of the biggest problem of this project was relocating the informal settlers living on the banks of the river. President Marcos was aware of this and relocation of these informal settlers happened under his term. I guess his housing projects helped a lot with this one."

I remember news also about establishing waste-to-fuel plants a few months ago as a proposal. Wonder if that would actually happen. The amount of change made in these massive areas plus the retrieval of huge amounts accumulated trash reminded me of that possible project, and that is an actual big change in how trash is managed and used as a useful source of energy.
Even if it took years, environmental issues that were deemed to have irreversible implications and effects, current cooperative projects show how possible it could be now, it just needs more of ppl to care in making such changes, in this case, nothing less than the country's presidents who really took action in making the success in saving environmentally dead areas into reality, and that should give every individual to actually care in maintaining it for everyone's benefit.

I like how the narrator says things like "Slowly this, slowly that, the river became this, became that (people don't wash clothes anymore, ferry declined, became dark, gave off smell)" - not really saying the main cause (well they did say it in one quick sentence) but the video shows the main reason. People. People shitting there and basically using it as their toilet, turning it into their garbage cans. Hopefully the government/private companies really push through, follow-up and keep their guards up. Otherwise, shanties will come back and this cycle will restart.

I lived nearby a creek that feeds Pasig River for 13 years. I noticed that the people who lived next to those creeks dumped their garbage and human waste on them. How are they going to deal with the residents who live near them... So many creeks feed into Pasig and most of the pollutants comes from them.

Starting from Duterte to Marcos and beyond, if this rehabilitations keeps on going for 30 years, philippines will look different. Like duterte said about Lee Kwan Yew of Singapore, he started the changes and up to 30 years later Singapore was transformed into a better place to live in. It will take time and continues efforts from current to future politicians of the philippines to continue this trend for the country to call itself better and quality of life so much better.

What's the point if metro manila lacks proper sewage treatment facilities.
The source of the problem should be fixed. It's just a glorified cesspool at this point at least until 90% of our wastewater doesn't get dumped into bodies of water.

Yung esplanade po kay bbm yung jones bridge po kay Du30 at sa kaalaman ng lahat si isko ang unang naglinis ng pasig river sinabayan ni digong sa pagpapaganda at in improve ni bbm.. Kaya lahat sila dapat pasalmatan.
Pinalinis noon si digong pero bumalik ang basura dahil di natanggal ang mga squatter sa tabi ng ilog kasi walang mapaglipatan mga libolibong squatter ngayun si bbm na May pabahay para sa mga squatter kaya inalis totally ni bbm si bbm pinaganda at ginaya ang ilog sa Europe
Just one leader with political will initiated it then some will follow ..just let the riverbanks thrive with plants trees and nature and not illegal settlers who have destroyed and polluted it for a very long time..
