- The United States and the Philippines have agreed to restart joint patrols in the West Philippine Sea, as the longtime allies seek to counter China’s military rise in the broader South China Sea. The two countries had suspended maritime patrols in the hotly contested area under the previous administration.
During a visit to Manila by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, he and his Philippine counterpart Carlito Galvez agreed to restart joint maritime patrols in the South China Sea to help address the growing security challenges in the disputed area.
The joint patrol will not limit to the resumption of combined maritime activities, including the conduct of joint sails by the US and Philippine navies, in the South China Sea.
According to Defense Secretary Gilberto Gibo Teodoro Jr., the combined maritime activity sees no problem with the initiative since defense arrangements in the Philippines are nobody else's business. As long as it will adhere to the United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea.
There should be no problem in holding joint patrols in internationally recognized sea lanes under international. The Philippines and the US first conducted joint sea patrols in the WPS in 2016.
Earlier this year, China offered to conduct joint military exercises with the Philippines. However, in the meantime, there is no legal basis to pursue the Chinese offer at the moment. Unlike the United States and the Philippines' joint patrol, China needs to have a Visiting Forces Agreement with the Philippines, to make it constitutional under the Philippine Law.
Given the Philippines’ proximity to Taiwan and its surrounding waters, its cooperation would be critical in the event of a conflict with China. Beijing’s growing assertiveness on Taiwan and its building of bases in the disputed South China Sea has given fresh impetus to Washington and Manila to strengthen their partnership.
On August 5, another dramatic hours-long standoff occurred between the Chinese and the Philippine Coastguard near Second Thomas Shoal during the resupply mission to Philippine forces, stationed onboard the grounded navy ship.
Two days after the incident, the Philippine government summoned China’s ambassador and presented a strongly worded diplomatic protest over the Chinese coast guard’s use of water cannons, in the latest confrontation with Philippine vessels in the disputed South China Sea.

Joint Maritime Patrol has been recommended years ago but this perspective has been stagnant many years past. The dragons creeping tactics has gained wide range in the WPS but the actions have been too slow and really very slow. The world condemns China which don't recognized international rules. The UN has no police power to implement the ruling, UN member nations must consolidate their military forces together to act as an implementing body to force the wrong elements under the fold of international ruling.
It's impossible to bring them into negotiations as they never recognize or follow international laws, so, it's futile to talk and it's simply a waste of time. Grabs and greeds dominantly exist from adversaries behaviour.
I believe powerful nations (all allies) should collaborate together and start economic crippling effect. Pull out all foreign businesses from China and re-locate them probably to India, Korea, Vietnam, Japan and Philippines. Optimistically, It will create internal chaos by economic effect, economic hardship is effective with less use of guns and bullets.
China has the ability to manufacture military hardwares and other modern equipments coming from huge economic interest and this is now the effect of US economic favors granted from previous US administration. It hits back, now it's time to shift economic favor to other reliable nations. Let China live under economic difficulties till they discern what's wrong and what's right.

Why is it that the ASIAN countries don't even comment on this incident ??? Which is they are more involve and part of the situation.
They all know it's a drama of the US. The Pinoys ignore the WPS thing, they know it was concocted by the US. The US ordered it's puppet Aquino to vacate some islands to allegedly “cool down tension” after it agitated tension in the first place, so China & Vietnam occupied those islands (just like when the Philippines occupied Zhongye island vacated by the Taiwanese during a storm, turning Zhongye into Pagasa island now). So the US has now a convenient excuse to stir trouble against China (but of course, its propaganda machine doesn't mention Vietnam as an aggressor too or the fact that the US lost to Vietnam in the Vietnam War will be dug up as a counter-propaganda, it will make i's pretensions to help the Philippines against China laughable considering it can't even beat Vietnam).

ASEAN countries prefer to share resources with china and negotiate the SCS dispute. Unlike Philippines which insist they own the stolen china spratlies and gives USA bases to confront china. The consequences of this expansionist policy are very visible. Taiwan, as well as Japan and the Philippines, which also have a defense treaty with the US, know that in order to continue to exist they need to have a strong dissuasion, because if agreements were resolved, Russia would not have invaded Ukraine, China would not be threatening to invade Taiwan, North Korea would not be threatening to destroy South Korea and Iran would not be seeking to deploy atomic bombs to destroy Israel.
Another serious consequence expected when China invades Taiwan is that all countries and companies that depend on China will also pay dearly.

Go improve your history before commenting here. South Tibet , spratlies, were stolen when china was weak. Taiwan was a provincial island of china separated because of the unfinished civil war.
Bad people are liars. They will enter into agreements but will renege the moment they get the best opportunity so you should not trust them. China was a signatory to UNCLOS but stole almost all of South China Sea when it saw the opportunity when America left its military bases in the Philippines. These Chinks are very opportunistic people so all nations should watch out. Both Russia and China are just too greedy, acquisitive and expansionist. They are who they are and will do what they want without regard to other sovereign countries so don’t give them excuses. After World War 2, Russia invaded so many Eastern European countries that it became the USSR. Even now, it continues to reclaim other lost former USSR nations like Georgia and Ukraine but these countries despise Russia. China stole Tibet from Nepal so the Dalai Lama lost his original home. Both countries have border disputes with other countries even with each other. If there’s one country that should have invaded other sovereign countries after World War 2, it should have been the U.S. because it already had atomic bomb then and now. Instead, it did not invade but helped the devastated countries to rebuild even its enemies like Japan and Germany and look how progressive they have become. This shows the goodness, generosity and helpfulness of the U.S. Everytime there’s trouble in other parts of the world, it’s the first one that helps no wonder other nations abuse its kindness and generosity sometimes.
