Levada Nova + Levada do Moinho walk: One of the best hikes on Madeira!

- The Levada Nova and Levada do Moinho walks are joined by a short staircase to allow you to hike a circular trail - an unusual feature of a Levada walk on the island of Madeira! Neither of these walks were overly popular which we found surprising due to the stunning views offered - particularly on the Levada Nova stretch. The fact that you walk behind a waterfall (the Nova and Moinho Waterfall) and have a fun tunnel to navigate, it's a must-do for any nature lover! There are parts of the trail that are vertigo inducing, especially on the Levada Nova section as the foliage hasn't yet matured to block the steep valley views, but despite being up high with stunning vistas, these are 2 easy levadas on Madeira. There's a lovely picnic area with a BBQ and picnic tables, some in shade, others in sun, as well as a flat grassy area, close to the foot of a second waterfall along the trail which by water joins Levada Nova to Levada Moinho. We parked for free in bay parking outside the church called Igreja da Lombada da Ponta do Sol, in the small town of Lombada, and there are free toilets here too. The Levada Moinho begins here, whereas Levada Nova begins further up the hill - but it's well signposted. If you're planning to visit Madeira island, or are just looking for things to do in Madeira to decide on whether a Madeira vacation is right for you, I hope this video will be helpful.

As always iam gathering main information about places you visited briefly here it’s Levada center is Russian independent non government polling sociological research organization, named after founder first Russian professor of sociology yurl levada . Meaning of levada irrigation channel or aqueduct specific to Portuguese Atlantic region of mederia . Levada built by farmers ( hereus ) . Consequently held ownership rights assuming responsibilities management and maintenance. Levada nova moinho walk you can explore 405 miles loop trail near ponta do sol Madeira generally considered challenging route takes average of 3 h 44 min to complete.
Hi Kahtoon, I am well thank you, I hope you are too. I didn't realise there was a Russian sociologist with he same last name as the Levada's on Maderia, but I think it's a coincidence as I learnt whilst out there that the name comes from the Portuguese verb 'levar' meaning to carry as it carries water. Interesting to hear your research suggests the trail to be challenging as the fact it was mostly flat left us both feeling like it was lovely and easy! Perhaps its all relative, and in comparison to other flat levadas on the Island, this is more difficult.

Love the look of those green valleys, you definitely lucked out by hiking in the morning shade - looks hot! How exciting are the tunnels? Certainly adds a bit of mystery and suspense to the hike, especially when they bring you out to a waterfall like that. I knew that the irrigation channels were next to the paths but didn't know why so thanks for explaining that - it all makes sense now.
Hi Matt, yes, in the summer Madeira can get hot. When we first arrived they were experiencing a heatwave and were well into the 30's which is unusual. I think by the time we did this walk, it had just started to calm down, but whenever we lost the shade, we really felt it. There's one hike (the island's epic hike) that we did and on the return leg of it after we'd stopped filming, the sun and heat got to me badly. The tunnels turned out to be an absolute godsend as I just stopped in one with dripping water for ages to cool down!
Nice video we did this walk in November of 2022, can highly recommend the Levada do Moinho, Levada Nova is a bit scary. Just a note and a heads up! PR7 is it the Levada Moinho in Achadas da Cruz you might confuse your viewers and want to change the title.

Last part of my research this trail is great for hiking mountain biking , running. Nova directs public transport can get by bus to centre of ponta do so town , with company rodent . Closet stop seems to be ponta do so - rotunda from which it take you to another 1 hour to reach . Levada in total there are 2500 km on island and many were created even first road . There are several attractions such as Madeira dolphin whale watching, Madeira peaks day tour , run channel hop on hop off tour , sunrise transfere were waterfalls mountains bon voyage best wishes for you your family friends.
We took a Madeira walks book with us and a lot of them were saying how to do the walks via public transport (we'd already booked accommodations which need a car to get to them so this element was a little defunct) but when we began to read things - like your research has shown about an extra hours walk from the bus stop to the Trailhead, we were pleased we had the car.
