Uncover the 10 Best Hikes on Madeira Island - #1 Will Shock You!

- I spent 2 weeks travelling and hiking my way around the island of Madeira - completing a total of 10 hikes (arguably 11 depending on your definition of a hike) and in this video, I'll share with you the 10 we completed, ranking them from least to most favourite. In order of completion, the first hike we tackled was a circular trail, walking out on Levada Nova and back on Levada Moinho, both near Ponta Do Sol (not to be confused with another Levada Moinho near Porto Moniz). Next was the PR6 25 fontes levada walk which was lengthened to take in the Risco Waterfall, Lagoa do Vento which splits the Risco Waterfall into 2, and we returned to the car walking along Levada Alecrim. Next up was PR14 Levada Dos Cedros, a mystical walk with thanks to the fog, just down from the Fanal Forest. After relocating to Sao Vicente, Madeira, we next conqured the pr16 levada Faja do Rodrigues, though turning back before the final tunnel as we didn't fancy hiking for 2km bent over in the dark! As we moved eastwards, next was PR9 Caldeirao Verde, a popular walk, but with good reason. Then it was the turn of the mighty beast, a sun rise at pico do arieiro to then be followed by the pico do arieiro to pico ruivo hike. To give our muscels a bit of a break, the next day we sauntered along the Castelejo Levada walk, getting up close and personal with local Madeiran life, walking right past people's homes and gardens growing fruit and vegetables. It was at this point where we started to make some friends at the hostel we'd moved into for a few nights, and with newly found friends, we wandered along the Larano walk, Madeira, otherwise known as Boca do Risco - the view point it leads out to, on the same day we ambled along Levada dos Balcões - I'll let you be the judge of whether it can be classed as a hike or not. The following day with yet another new friend in tow from the hostel, we conqured the Sao Lourenco walk, complete with a wild swim in the turquoise waters, and to finish the holiday off, we wandered along the PR18 Levada do Rei, a very pretty, flower filled Levada Walk that pushes you behind a waterfall, one of Madeira's easy waterfall hikes, perfect to complete without breaking a sweat for when you have a plane to board afterwards!

Nice. Just like your previous video. Hard to pick the spots. No. 4 would be my pick.
The Pico to Pico hike was immense and I think had we done it in Spring or Autumn, it could have made it to the number 1 spot. This didn't make the vlog as it happened on the return leg after we'd put the camera away, but unfortunately the heat really got to me, and I struggled a lot to get back to the car park. I had to sit down in the shade for a good half an hour when we finally reached some and had one of the worst headaches I've had. I was able to wobble along the trail to a tunnel which was lovely and cool - stood under cold dripping water for a while and eventually cooled enough to have the strength to make it back. A scary experience, but one I've learnt from. Naturally it had a bit of a negative knock on the hiking experience. Next time, I wear a hat earlier and find shade to sit in for lunch 😉
@@WhenAdventureKnox What an experience. I used to get headaches during my hikes because of the heat and dehydration. I now got those redehydration tablets just in case. But generally, i am ok now. I just need to hydrate myself as often. 😊😊😊
Nice account of your favourite 10 hikes on the island, some well chosen clips and good detailed commentary. I really liked the waterfall on number 6 Levada Caldeirao Verde and how close you could get to it. I think my favourite was number 4 Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo - that brutal ridge walk and those epic steps stole it for me. I suppose each hike is different depending on the environmental factors i.e. weather, season, time of day, and sometimes everything just comes in at the same time and you end up enjoying a hike more than the average person, maybe that's what happened on number 1 Levada das 25 Fontes?
I totally agree about the timing of the 25 Fontes hike and I'm sure I wouldn't have been as fond of it had we arrived later with the tourist masses. If you (/when you?) make it to Madeira, if you do the Pico to Pico hike (number 4) I'd highly recommend doing it 1 way with either a taxi or tour company collecting at the other end. Or maybe if you're not there in the height of summer, it might not be as bad. The Caldeirao Verde waterfall was very spectacular, and nice how close you could get to it as you say. I think like you said about the timing of the day, had we gone to that one earlier, we maybe would have enjoyed it more?

Ah, I wish I hadn't already had this video all edited and uploaded to UA-cam before I released the original video from that hike because if I'd known your dog starred early on in the original - I'd have totally swapped the clips so yours could star again in this one!! To be honest, I'm never really sure if owners like me filming their dogs when out on hikes, so it's been really nice to see your reaction! 🙏
