yeah it certainly was never as prolific as other battleships. but as a status symbol and demonstration of tech. it showed that the klingons could, if they wished play the battleship game. however in reality they lacked the resources to do so.
Just build 30 Scimitar class ships minus the radiation weapon. It could have easily taken out the new Enterprise class but they needed the Captain alive.
Radiation is a generalisation. The Scimitar class prototype had a thalaron emitter weapon, which thalaron research was banned by the New Khitomer Accords.

I have Kerchan art as my desktop picture for like 8 years and I think it`s perfect design as s D`deridex scucessor. We had to see those in Picard but the whole show is only about disappointment
Well their targeting systems couldn't track so many ships at once and the Dominion has tens of thousands of ships. They'll usually have fleets larger than the Alpha Quadrant's powers so when tracking so many ships, the weapons will fire inaccurately and it doesn't possess the weapons to combat fighters. It's maneuverability didn't grant it any favors and the exposed engine nacelles would make it a sitting duck.
Against the smaller attack ships it's size and lack of sophisticated targeting sensors meant it would quickly find itself overwhelmed (think of it was a pack of lions working together to kill a single elephant). Against the battle cruisers the D'Deridex lacked the speed and maneuverability and the battle cruisers could simple keep out of range or attack when they a position that was favorable and up against the battle ships it was simply out gunned. At the end of the day the D'Deridex whilst it looked impressive in person and on paper it's sensors, defense systems and warp engines were poor compared to it's contemporaries and as result performed poorly in large scale combat. It should be noted that although in combat it struggled against more sophisticated ships it was far from useless, it's weapon systems still packed a punch (plasma torpedoes especially) and it's large size made it useful for sending huge amounts of troops and supplies to combat areas
2:30 Ehhh...technically correct, but not really. The issue lies in concentration. The Klingon Vorcha class ships might lack weapons coverage, but their "limited barrage" as you put it, is withering. The D'Deridex only has "360 degrees of fire" for a tiny handful of its weapons at any given time save for those mounted on its "head" and the fuselage weapons bays. These weapon mounts account for well over half of its total projected firepower, and nearly all of them can only fire in the frontal 180 degree arc, and at a declination of maybe 90 degrees. (usually less; especially in the case of the disruptors) The result is a ship that has no more effective "360 degree" firepower than any Federation ship it was expected to engage in its time, and only slightly more capable than the heavier Klingon ships in standoff engagements. But in a Cold War/Peacetime skirmishing role, its large, fearsome appearance and cloak would ensure it a terrifying reputation that belies its true (overstated) capabilities, and that is exactly how the Romulans operate: Misdirection and bluffs with just enough real force behind their actions to make everyone think twice about challenging them. If it came down to a 1vs1 against a Galaxy class with capable tactics, I have little doubt that the Galaxy class would win in any engagement but a well-designed cloak-ambush. Despite being physically smaller, the Galaxy has superior shields, faster engines (both warp and impulse) and, ironically, far better sustained firepower through its phasers. Phasers are generally stated to be more effective vs shields than Disruptors, and the Galaxy mounts a very heavy battery of them across its hull. The D'Deridex would need to keep the Galaxy "pointed" for its forward batteries in order to win, and win quickly it must at that. The longer the battle goes on, the greater the advantage for the Galaxy class. If the Galaxy manages to maneuver above, below or behind the D'Deridex, it will wear down the Warbird's shields with its more-effective phasers, and once that's done, just a few shots to the Warbird's power or engines will ensure its destruction, as it cannot outrun a Galaxy, and cannot turn to outgun it at that point.) But don't take my word for it; we saw the Warbirds underperform horrifically vs the Dominion fleets even against much smaller ships where its vaunted "360 degrees of fire" availed it nothing. In the end, the Romulans built new battleships because the spell of the D'Deridex was broken before all who witnessed it in real fleet action. Even after the Dominion War, while the D'Deridex was being retired, the Federation was still churning out updated Galaxy class ships despite Sovereigns and newer 5th generation ships moving in to replace the 4th gen fleets (generations being relative to the flaghip. The Enterprise-D is a Galaxy Class, which would be 4th generation. Enterprise-E is a Sovereign class, so that would be 5th, etc). It would also explain why in nearly every instance where we saw the potential for a fight between the Enterprise-D and a D'Deridex Warbird, the Romulans always brought two or more, or otherwise rigged the engagement by other means to dissuade direct confrontation. Romulans aren't stupid; and they knew what their craft were designed to do and what they were capable of.
D'Deridex was under powered, slow and lumbering. Without a cloak it was basically a huge target. And with Federation sensors they weren't as stealthy as hoped. I guess against an Ambassador Class they'd be terrifying. Against a Galaxy Class not so much. They never engaged a Galaxy Class and the Galaxy Class stood up to the Dominion ships better than the D'Deridex did. If the Romulans started a war breaking the Treaty of Algeron within a few months Federation ships would be phased cloaked and the Klingons wouldn't sit on the side lines. Imagine a Sovereign class or a Phoenix class with phased cloaking. Even a Luna Class with phased Cloaks would be unstoppable.
by the late 2360s i would agree that the romulans would be unlikely to overwhelm starfleet. but when it was first launched, it had no parallel. only with the introduction of the 'anti-borg' starfleet was the d'deridex outclassed. also bear in mind the numbers in which the d'deridex was constructed.
@@venomgeekmedia9886 you seem to forget, that D'Deridex was romulan equivalent of Excelsior class ! run-of-the mil, basic workhorse ! Still could contend with everything except Borg or Dominion Battleship, but for the later Romulans designed Scimitar ! Also, at beginning of Dominion war, doctrine and technology was able to hand its own stern to *any* starship in the quadrant.
@@deadlynytshayd2220 "Romulan cloak > Klingon cloak" A Klingon Bird of prey being parked over Romulus for most of Unification I and II and nobody noticing implies Klingon cloaks are on par with Romulan ones.
Man this thing has the same maximum warp speed of the Federation Intrepid Class warp 9.975 meaning if the Intrepid Class were at it's maximum warp speed of 9.975 the Romulan Kerchan Class would be able to keep up with it.
Ok I see a problem. A smaller firing arc means: bigger gun, higher output of fire(spinal mounts can output a ton of dmg quick in rapid volleys), smaller target(targeting a turret is easier than an arc gun as it has to be raised above the hull in a "blister" to have said arc), less energy bleedoff in standby (longer conduits have more bleed), fewer guns typically (360/180 firing arcs usually have the few guns can do it all mentality), less point defenses (not that missiles or torpedoes could be shot down let alone fighters/bombers). While smaller arcs don't mean better it does have some advantages.
Klingon ships just turn to face their targets in battle keeping their guns (all their guns) fixed on their target as they move quickly to evade return fire. They can manouvre quickly and turn their guns on a chosen target at any point they are very manouvreable.
Klingon ships can just turn as they manouvre to keep their enteire forward weapons array facing their target to keep firing while still moving fast. They also have aft torpedoes usually. Even the b rell can do this. Even the old designs like b rells and k vorts are still effective in the dominion war because they are just guns armor and engines. Good vid as always though man. Nice work.
I didn't find the music as loud as you did (granted, everybody's hearing is different) - but it could be pretty distracting, especially around minutes 17-18. But I primarily felt that the application of music was pretty random.
The D'deridex should never be used the way they were during the war, the showrunners clearly wanted big ships blowing up for the spectacle. The D'deridex should have been used as cavalry and used their cloaking for hit and runs.
I am going to share with some of my Geeking buddy's. May I say that IMO the back ground music is too loud. I love the story line! I want the Romulan to be very High Tech and powerful maybe not have as many ships as the Federation or Klingon empires but more powerful than either in individual combat. I would love to hear something about the Cloaking Devices the Romulans have, being decades ahead of the klingon type and the rumored Federation prototype, the Cloaking Device is what makes the Romulans so feared after all!
Funnily enough, the Kerchan has always struck me as looking like more of a precursor to the D'Deridex than a successor, given the 23rd century styling of the engines and the leaner shape overall.
an interesting idea, however in my view the Romulans didn't start constructing large warships till after the kithomer accords. when you say 23rd century styling are you thinking the TMP enterprise and excelsior, there is a pattern in trek where technology seems to go between rounded soft shapes (TNG TOS) and sharp, leaner shapes (The Movies.) in my next video i will address how romulan shipbuilding changed at the turn of the century.
The styling I'm referring to in particular is that of the D7. The detailing of the grilles is certainly more intricate than on the Romulan D7, but the bulky lines of the engines remind me of an era of design that perhaps followed a little after that, e.g. TMP and the K't'inga. Not that I'm saying it does come from that era, mind, as you're absolutely right about the designs we see seeming to change from one form to another and then back again.
The klingon ships in trek have forward facing weapons mostly but they can still maintain a cinstant rate if fure as they turn on the spot to keep their weapons facing their targets. Klingin ships are mainky weapons engines and armor so even with alot of older designs used during the bext gen era they are cimpetitive still. They can move very fast and evasive and still stay facing their targets firing
The question i have is how it compares to the Scimatar. Considered if this battlewagon is as good if not better than the scimatar then yes it out class the Soverign class. However if it is lesser than the scimatar then it is an even game.
According to the movie, the Scimitar had 52 "disrupt tor" banks, 27 photon torpedo launchers; primary AND secondary shields, the "they la lawn" cascading bio pulse weapon, AND the ability to fire its weapons WHILE cloaked.
Good clip. Two pieces of constructive criticism would be that the de deridex wouldn't be twice the size as the galaxy class. And the negvar isn't the same size as the galaxy class, it's probably twice the size. So, swap those two round and you're probably bang on
i'm going by official sizes verified by ex astris scientia the neghvar is pretty much the same as a galaxy class. the d'deridex is about 1200m but probably only has a little more internal volume.
"Target all weapons to the two neck structures, fire at will!" (Romulan Warbird "Head/Bridge" floats away from main hull...) "Captain, we're being hailed by the Romulans " Captain: "Open channel.." Romulan Commander: " We will comply, Captain.."
in fairness it would also pretty easy to cause an unexpected saucer separation on a lot of starfleet ships. everyone is pretty guilty of this design flaw but its part of star treks look.
@@venomgeekmedia9886 Also in any design there would be Primary and secondary shielding, and hull integrity bracing and plating, especially enhanced in the most vulnerable areas of any ship design, so any ship being able to get in close enough to "break the back" of one of these ships would probably be too heavily damaged to continue to fight afterwards.
I listened for quite a while until this guy mentioned the Kerchan doing High-G maneuvers? That it became clear he was making everything up, with no respect to canon. High-G maneuvers? in Space? With ships that have fictional dampeners? oy.
G-forces do occur in space. There is a reason why ships in the Star Trek universe have structural integrity force fields that literally help the ship from breaking apart while maneuvering. Even as slow as our NASA spacecraft move if not calculated correctly they can be pulled apart by g-forces. Now consider the size and speeds of these fictional ships. Even then there is a reason the larger more cumbersome ships don't maneuver as fast.
if you look on the D'deridex model, there are rounded hemispheres across the ships hull, one pair are the 'eyes' on either side of the head another pair on the dorsal superstructure, two more at the aft section on the upper and lower wings, another pair in the connecting 'tail section'. and on some models a pair below those two shuttlebays.
maybe, but the d'deridex was a large lumbering frame, and its weapons are intended for engaging medium tonnage cruisers. against heavy battleships like the neghvar and sovereign it was outclassed overall. the kerchan is leaner and meaner, and a battleship killer.
@@venomgeekmedia9886 And sadly ugly as home made sin. The Scimitar seems to have displaced it for the role it was intended as well. What I would propose is a refit on the scale of the Constitution class's refit. New cores, new nacelles, new weapon emitters and arrangement thereof. New sensors, computer core, impulse, and eps systems. I would also look at the inertial dampeners, armor if it had any and if not then adding some, and perhaps scaling back some of it's multi role mission to focus a little tighter on acting as the center of a combined arms fleet. But for that to work Romulus needs a capable small escort again to act as scouts and sensor pickets.
I’m sure they did refit the cores and sensors. Otherwise, the focus shifted to the newer designs. They didn’t just throw them away. Not surprised that you wouldn’t see them in front line duty; however, I’m sure they’d be used in a support role bringing in troops or filling holes in firing arcs. With the upgraded cores, and sensors they’d do well in a mixed fleet
Even in space when the ship takes a sharp 10+g turn your still going the same direction you were before the turn. Without being strapped in and prepping your diaphragm you would impact a bulkhead and be mushed. Technically trek has gravity systems and inertial dampeners but those can work only up to a certain point. Check out the expanse tv show for examples of newtonian physics in a scifi show. One guy goes from 100,000 mph to 0mph in under a second and he gets liquified.
Um. Yes? You still have momentum in space, so quickly changing your vector will result in 'High G' effects. G-loading, as we call it in Aerospace, does mean we are generating some sort of gravity field as we move around - it means we are sacrificing current moment in order to change vector. An object in motion will remain in motion unless otherwise acted upon by another force. When an F-22 goes into a high-g turn, the pilot and airframe are both still with the inertia to go the direction it was most recently moving. But turning sacrifices that energy by bleeding speed / forward velocity and thus you experience 'G-Forces'. So no, there was nothing "cringey" about what the narrator said at all.

yeah it certainly was never as prolific as other battleships. but as a status symbol and demonstration of tech. it showed that the klingons could, if they wished play the battleship game. however in reality they lacked the resources to do so.
@@venomgeekmedia9886 Endgame had them mass producing them and the screen caps make it clear they aren't Voodiehs.

It was also designed by the remans.
@SonofEyeaboveall Effoff lol thanks
Yes, but can it run Crysis ?
It really started showing its age against the Akira class Federation ship.
I love this ship! Wow, the Romulans are back!
same, i really hope they get used in the new picard tv series, its just such a menacing looking ship.
Terrifyingly amazing!
@@venomgeekmedia9886 I love how the silhouette forms an perfect oval while still retaining the bird like beak and hooked wings or talons. The Death Bird analogy is extremely fitting and fits perfectly with the aftermath of War of Quadrants from afar as well as an uprising/Insurrection from within by Remus.
Great content, but the music needs work..I understand the reason many use it..but volume And timing is a major issue..the content and your voice should be the priority here. I see this is a new channel and I love the info,so I will subscribe hopefully you work out the kinks and don't take it personally
I have Kerchan art as my desktop picture for like 8 years and I think it`s perfect design as s D`deridex scucessor. We had to see those in Picard but the whole show is only about disappointment
Why did the D'Deridex do as badly as Miranda's in the Dominion war?
That music always makes me play that game after watching these... Every time. Luvit
So she's a slightly beefier version of the D'Deridex.
Leaner
@@venomgeekmedia9886 So a D'Deridex that went on a diet in a nutshell.
Love your obsession with Romulans! :)
(usually less; especially in the case of the disruptors)
The result is a ship that has no more effective "360 degree" firepower than any Federation ship it was expected to engage in its time, and only slightly more capable than the heavier Klingon ships in standoff engagements.
If the Galaxy manages to maneuver above, below or behind the D'Deridex, it will wear down the Warbird's shields with its more-effective phasers, and once that's done, just a few shots to the Warbird's power or engines will ensure its destruction, as it cannot outrun a Galaxy, and cannot turn to outgun it at that point.)
But don't take my word for it; we saw the Warbirds underperform horrifically vs the Dominion fleets even against much smaller ships where its vaunted "360 degrees of fire" availed it nothing.
Phased Cloaking. That's the ticket.
@@venomgeekmedia9886 actually, Intrepid could sustain max 9,975 for 12 hours. Sustainable speed was about Warp 6.
Man this thing has the same maximum warp speed of the Federation Intrepid Class warp 9.975 meaning if the Intrepid Class were at it's maximum warp speed of 9.975 the Romulan Kerchan Class would be able to keep up with it.

I've only recently started listening to this channel and so far I like it.
Going through and rewatching these for the return
Shh ;)
I like that you music is so loud that i can't hear you. Well done.
The Borg had the best design for their ships.
nothing projects more fear than a flying no no square spaceship
Minecraft
Klingon ships just turn to face their targets in battle keeping their guns (all their guns) fixed on their target as they move quickly to evade return fire. They can manouvre quickly and turn their guns on a chosen target at any point they are very manouvreable.
Klingon ships can just turn as they manouvre to keep their enteire forward weapons array facing their target to keep firing while still moving fast. They also have aft torpedoes usually. Even the b rell can do this. Even the old designs like b rells and k vorts are still effective in the dominion war because they are just guns armor and engines. Good vid as always though man. Nice work.
also small crew less than 50
Too bad they were flown by klingons. I doubt anybody on board was able to do much more than bang rocks together and grunt at each other.
One of these ships shows up near your ship or planet and the methane level rises. Except on a Borg ship of course.
7:40 - The design of that Romulan ship reminds me of the design of the Covenant CCS battlecruisers in Halo
personally i always thought it was more like the CAS carriers. but there definitely is overlap in design styles.
well done the music at times was so loud it was hard to hear your voice
I didn't find the music as loud as you did (granted, everybody's hearing is different) - but it could be pretty distracting, especially around minutes 17-18. But I primarily felt that the application of music was pretty random.

I want this ship in Star trek online I've been playing for years now also I love your content bro and I'm a Romulan Republic at heart lol
I kinda wish this warbird was in Star Trek Online
so do i
The D'deridex should never be used the way they were during the war, the showrunners clearly wanted big ships blowing up for the spectacle.
I would love to hear something about the Cloaking Devices the Romulans have, being decades ahead of the klingon type and the rumored Federation prototype, the Cloaking Device is what makes the Romulans so feared after all!
how would it go against the USS vengeance upgraded with all the latest 24th century tech?
dial back the music volume a bit. could barely hear you with it matching your voice audio levels.
yeah sorry this is the 1st in the series and the audio does improve.
This should be the TRUE Romulan Titan in Star Trek Armada 3, not some Reman filth Picard blew too hell.
I really wish the ship was on Star Trek online. This would be my main ship! I am in love with this design!!
Loved the video. Hard to hear some parts of it die to music playing over you. Otherwise really cool video.
Not that I'm saying it does come from that era, mind, as you're absolutely right about the designs we see seeming to change from one form to another and then back again.
kerchan in action ua-cam.com/video/_-ahSKLbubg/v-deo.html
I think the best one they made was the one from the last TNG movie. It just looks like a natural D’Deridex replacement.
How would this ship match up against a Sovereign class ?
close. Thanks you for your membership. the sovereign would have an edge in maneuverability, but the kerchan would still have a firepower advantage.
Didn’t the Star empire crumble when Romulus was destroyed by a supernova?
yes but that was 2389. this series was made before that.
Very odd. But thank you. Keep up the good work amigo.
Sorry but I have noticed in all Romulan ships a clear weakness. The neck areas, concentrate fire there and it will give.
Seriously -_-
@@Hylebos75 a Constitution-class that was from Kirk's era did managed to disable the warbird by the neck, but it didn't buy it much time to get away.
"Target all weapons to the two neck structures, fire at will!"
(Romulan Warbird "Head/Bridge" floats away from main hull...)
"Captain, we're being hailed by the Romulans "
Captain: "Open channel.."
Romulan Commander: " We will comply, Captain.."
in fairness it would also pretty easy to cause an unexpected saucer separation on a lot of starfleet ships. everyone is pretty guilty of this design flaw but its part of star treks look.
That is totally a problem that the Scimitar class Battleship addresses you see how compact she is

D'deridex are still my favourite
A bit of a buzz I should not have cursed but the Scimitar is hands-down the baddest ship in the alpha quadrant
Enjoyed the video and the only issue I had is that your background music at times got so loud it drowned out your voice.
Huh, so where are the weapon emplacements that provide a 360 arc? For the d'deridex
if you look on the D'deridex model, there are rounded hemispheres across the ships hull, one pair are the 'eyes' on either side of the head another pair on the dorsal superstructure, two more at the aft section on the upper and lower wings, another pair in the connecting 'tail section'. and on some models a pair below those two shuttlebays.
Very awesome content. The only thing I can see is the background music can be overtaking the narration.
Would have been faster and cheaper to refit the double D with new engines, singularity cores, sensors, and weapon arrangements.
maybe, but the d'deridex was a large lumbering frame, and its weapons are intended for engaging medium tonnage cruisers. against heavy battleships like the neghvar and sovereign it was outclassed overall. the kerchan is leaner and meaner, and a battleship killer.
Gene Roddenberry was a federation fan boy. Ergo common sense doesn't exist in non federation races lol 😂 🤣 💀
@@luisr2280 Jolan Tru.
Perhaps, in other words, the D'Deridex starship is the Mig 25 Foxbat of the Romulan Empire.
More like a TU 95. An old strategic weapon still in use.
Dude, there is no letter U in D'deridex.
Sorry of my ignorance vut what is wings of romulus? Is it related to star trek online?
its a documentary series based on the old "Wings of the Red Star" series.
16:17 high G maneuvers in a Zero G environment?
Yea what is so strange
The ship still has Inertia. It has to hold together and over come its own weight and speed to change direction.
That's the second comment I've seen with someone being incredulous about g forces in space. The amount of scientific illiteracy is cringy.
