One of the iconic starships designs since tng. This ship is a beast in size, weapon power and cloaking technology. But the dominion war proofed that huge battleships like a D'deridex Class has there weak points against smaller in packs working dominion raiders. This ship is the right tool for surprise or ambush tactics, but after a plan is fullfilled then there is only gritty battle and you can´t use the advantage of cloaking tactics anymore. And exactly at this point the D'deridex doesn´t perform well because it´s build for a different kind of warfare tactic and strategy. WotC Star Wars 3.5e " Starships of the Galaxy," .. 4e Saga edition sucked. My game shop 15 to 17 years ago build a D'derdex ship and just mounted T/I bombers onto turrets and placed they on the warbird wings to function as anti fighter point blank/ short range missile defense platforms. Along with the Falcon's quad blaster cannons for a anti-missile/ fighter screen. It was more than a match against an ISD 52 fighters and crippling the side of the destroyer. Also it could magnetic carry enough " rods from heaven/god " on the outside of its hull for ramming speed flyby attacks to snip ISD and send planets into a prolong ice age.
D'Deridex class Warbird was my favorite Star Trek's ship ever, and my second favorite starship of all the other franchises. Long live the Preator Reborned. Amazing Video for an Amazing ship
I've always loved the Romulan ship designs. Sleek and elegant but at the same time brutal and intimidating. Watching them uncloak in front of the Enterprise has always been as tense as it has been exciting. In terms of design the Romulans are clearly the Italians of the Galaxy.
A thought I just had while watching a related video to this was: What if a D'Deredex had ended up in the same situation as Voyager? How would the Romulans handle the situation, and would they be more or less likely to make it back to their own home territory than the crew of Voyager?
One thing I don't like is how weak the Romulans appeared during the Dominion war. From what I could tell, if not for the alliance between the Federation, and Klingon's, the Romulans would conquer either of them. Yet during the Dominion war they really didn't seem any more effective than the Federation, or Klingon's.
I think it makes sense that romulus was playing all sides quite a bit during the war. I would say that after the dominion war they likey had much more secure power in the galaxy.
Star Trek views the Federation as the good guys and thus they are the best. The Romulans come out with the leviathan D'deridex and the Golden Age Galaxy Class with its gyms, holodecks and schools can take it. I love the Federation and agree with the politics of the Federation but the view of people who claim the Golden Age was 'dangerously pacifistic' seems to be that if they just devoted every aspect of their ships to war and pumped them out then they'd be all conquering badasses. Except the Romulans and the Klingons do just that. They have slave races and cloaks, they're sneaky and blood thirsty. The post scarcity utopia with kids on their ships can take them. If you want an inuniverse explanation - science is not a video game. You can't put all your points to war research and expect to have the best tech. Many revolutions in military tech have come from pursuing bizarre civilian research that would seem to have nothing to do with war tech. While Klingons and Romulans are being sneaky warriors exploiting slave races they have to waste resources preventing and dealing with uprisings. By contrast the Federation expends resources on making its peoples happy and healthy so they feel comfortable having more babies, more babies means more people, which means more scientists, more artists to inspire the scientists who keep the people happy, more engineers to keep the people happy and ultimately more people who join up to become troops. You are right that because the Romulans have ten years being quiet they should have a massive army and they do have an awful lot of very large ships but the Romulan mentality limits technological growth and holds back their cultural development. They are on a very different technological track from the rest of the Alpha and Beta Quadrant and that's probably because they weren't able to learn from the technological development of the other powers.
I remember the old tech manuals from 2000 basically said the Warbird was a glass cannon. Designed to be intimidating with it size and stealthy but underpowered with its sheilds, weapons and engines. 2 excelsiors could have taken it and a galaxy class would have no problem.
@@jmcfintona999Very true. And while it was very big dimensionally, when it comes to usable hull volume, it really wasn’t any bigger than the Galaxy class. The D’Deridex’s only usable space is in the front “eagle head” section and the narrow engineering hull behind it. The support struts for the nascelles are almost half the total mass of the ship, but don’t seem to serve any other function besides looking cool.
I love this ship i have seen this video over dozen times never get tire my favorite Romulan ship and one of the most elegant ship in Star Trek. This is the horror of the Federation in the Raptors Wing
I always loved the intro sequence for the first Star Trek Armada PC game, Worf flies the Defiant through the massive wing span of a D'Deridex firing the pulsed phasers then deploying magnetic mines as it flies through. Being such a big ship it seems like an obvious tactic for smaller fighters like, the Klingon birds of prey, Peregrines and Dominion bug fighters. It would be so cool to see three birds of prey making an attack run through the wings, of course they'd get messed up but one could kamikaze into some section of the Romulan ship.
i remember in tng the first time a d'deridex decloaked and the sheer size then 2 more decloaked and i was like yea pricard is screwed welcome to new romulus !
@@venomgeekmedia9886 amen . But why i like the romulins anti trekker explains well . They are honorable and negotiable. The idea they are dishonorable and underhsnded is false they are just militaristic people . Similar to Roman's or greek's . I wish you would do a long video explaining this after watching anti trekkers video on it .
The original warbird concept at 19:45, looks like it could be a reimagining of the romulan phoenix class from the snes starfleet academy... I always really liked it as an old tos/movies era battlecruiser.
The Romulan D'deridex is one of the coolest looking ships in Star Trek, and it might have beaten a Galaxy class vessel, but that would not have been an easy fight. Also, the Romulan Empire was not stronger than the United Federation of Planets. If they could have taken over the United Federation of Planets or the Klingon Empire, they would have.
I remember the old technical manuals. The dederdix was supposedly a glass cannon, big but not much more powerful than a galaxy class maybe less. They didn't do great against the jem hadar. Think also that starfleet in the 2360s had plenty of excelsiors, new Orleans and ambassadors, mirandas and constellations maybe not as powerful individually but in groups. Dederdix was all about intimidation. The romulans preferred their enemies to fight each other which is why they never attacked the federation in this period
The Romulan Warbird was my favorite ship in TNG, and although you are right it would have been a match for a Galaxy Class, you are wrong that it would have just rolled through the Federation. Galaxy Class ships and others were also quite powerful and the UFP was very strong. Starfleet crews were also well-trained.
i would agree that by the late 2360s/2370s that was the case. but in early TNG starfleet lacks combat experienced crews or robust ships and if we listen to dialogue in 'the best of both worlds' only consists of around 120 ships. the romulan navy definitely had the advantage then.
@@venomgeekmedia9886 Hmmm I don't know...I remember the episode where Deanna was placed as a Romulan operative...the Commander of the Romulan Warbird was saying how the Federation was neither weak nor stupid...she had reservations about the United Federation of Planets. You may be right, maybe the Romulans did have an advantage...I just don't think the UFP was the pushover that some people make them out to be. Also, in the episode The Romulan Defector, Starfleet felt they could take on the Romulan Empire if they needed to. That was what the Admiral who was talking to Picard told him. He said we don't want a war, but we are willing to take on the Romulan Star Empire if that is what they want. One more thing, if you ever played the Star Trek Card game and compare the Galaxy Class ship to the Romulan Warbird, the Romulan Warbird has more firepower, but the Galaxy Class has better shields and is faster. Overall I think they would be more evenly matched than people realize.
yeah as i say in the video the romulans weren't expecting the galaxy class. they were looking more at the wolf 359 ships such as the New Orleans, Cheyenne, and ambassador classes. but starfleet only had a handful of galaxy class Ships. by contrast the D'deridex was the main workhorse of the imperial fleet.
@@venomgeekmedia9886 Another thing to remember though, Starfleet ships could be upgraded, like in DS9 where there was an Excelsior class starship that had upgraded weapons and shields that was almost a match for the Defiant. Just because some starfleet ship designs were older didn't mean they couldn't be upgraded to be heavy hitters. Also, thank you for the heart. :) Your video is awesome. :)
thanks. and very true starfleet have a real knack for life extension refits something which is becoming ever more commonplace in our world during the Cold War you see a frequent phasing in and out of new jet designs with a frontline lifespan of maybe only 10 years. but today everyone is still pretty much using the same aircraft as in the late 80s/90s with very few new designs instead prefering to upgrade. the best example of this is the F-16 Fighting Falcon.
This thing is city sized. You could comfortably fit tens of thousands of people onboard, just to make it so you could meet a coworker in the hallway once in a while.
The warp nacelles placement makes no sense as there is no up and down in space so it would not matter if it's above or below as that is irrelevant. Oh and the federation puts its nacelles everywhere not just above.
i'm looking at my Ships of the Line calendar. The one gun the VFX always depicted. It looks like the Navigational Deflector. 1)Since they ignore where the guns are supposed to be, and have them fire from any random spot - are we sure that wasn't SUPPOSED to be the deflector? 2) Given that the thing is more than 10 decks high, is that JUST a Disruptor (or Plasma Beam) or is it the equivalent of the big guns on the Vor'Cha or the Norway?
Alright. Let us take a shot of Romulan Ale every time "D'deridex" is spoken. If anyone still stands. You are the first choice of your next ship command.
Romulan Ale is supposed to be so potent to humans that one glass can easily make you drunk. That much ale and you’d probably hallucinate being a warbird.
Also very small hill volume for their dimensions (which were not stated or commented on in TNG), with most of the usable space being up front and the nacelle supports being about 4x as large as necessary and accounting for a huge amount of mass that could have been better used for additional hull volume to store weapons.
Now that you have added the Tomed Incident and everything that led up to it, including the various Romulan vessels of the period, are you going to give this video another look and update its information, to help bring it into line with Tomed?
It’s a shame we never get to see a long battle focused on a Warbird. The most we really get is in the back ground of later battles in the Dominion war, usually only firing one beam from the front.
Remember that DS9 episode where major Kira gathered a bajoran fleet to stop a Warbird from docking at that illegal hospital? Lmao they were lucky SF stepped in
It wasn't the hospital that was illegal, the Romulans had actually sought and gained official permission from the Bajorans to set up the hospital. It was the massive stockpiles of weapons and fortifications that were the issue, with it looking as if the Romulans were intending to create a fortress in the Bajoran system that they could use to take control of the wormhole or even annex the entire system. As to the gut taken to stand up to the Romulan fleet, its Colonel Kira, she would probably have destroyed the entire fleet by head butting it for having the temerity to even exist within her proximity and wouldn't even have smudged her perfectly applied lipstick while doing it.
Well,..... i totally agree with the "preator" about that young romulan (female) engineer..... - She seems..... quite..... "talented"......... at first..... - (second and third.....) "glances"!......... :)
It preformed with extinction in the dominion war? The amount of times you see them as a burning wreck was clear that it was just one large glass cannon (St verison of old man with Ferrari). Everyone knows... the power of a ship depends heavily on who is writing the episode. I love the design of the ship- and full credit to the creator of this vid. But fanfiction cracks me up!
It's not surprising to see destroyed D'Deridex Warbirds after fleet battles during the Dominion War as that ship wasn't really made for protracted slugging matches but ambush tactics and raiding strikes with its overwhelming frontal firepower. It's an oversized space submarine with an ass-blasting array of forward firepower. But its size and older technology base means it will show its age should its cloaking fail to conceal it long enough to engage on its own terms, as it is a relatively slow, massive target with poor flank/rear arc coverage.
@@venomgeekmedia9886 Yes but as he noted the power of a ship depends on the writer of the episode. J Michael Stracynsky - creator and majority writer of Babylon 5 - said a ship travels at the speed of plot. I.e, if the plot demands it gets there just too late then that's how fast it is. Your fanfics i.e. your battlespace and wings series - are great but the fact your video on the ship agrees with your writing does not disprove his point. That said I love what you do and the fact you make these ship breakdowns means that your battle videos feel so much more meaningful.
Jolan Tru! Good story but what was your source(s)? :) I adore the D'Deridex design. Impressive and epic WarGoose of the Supreme Power of Beta Quadrant. :D
so for the technical details i used Andrew Probert. as well as community headcannon to fill in the gaps like why the nacelles are in the middle. the Vmelak is by videospaceFX who did an incredible animation on Nerandra 3. the story of design is personal headcannon.
Where did you find that deck plan graphic for the D'deridex? I want a copy like yesterday and after an hour of google search didn't find one. Found a dead link to maybe a picture of it but not an actual image.
Venom Geek Media 98 oh ok I just watched someone do a video it was cool but just wanted to see you fully break it down it seemed like the pre d’diderex almost but thanks man
Have you guys seen the dreadnought warbird from the tos era? Its beta cannon only but you can see it if you Google "TOS dreadnought warbird " it's a ship in star trek online but i honestly love the design and think its incredibly realistic to what a dread war bird of tos era would look like. You can see a perfect evolutionary line from the tos warbirds in the show to the tos dread to the d'diradex. What do u guys think?
i like it. definitely bridges the gap. although i always had the impression from FASA that the romulan fleet was mostly BOPs of different varieties. they didn't start looking into bigger ships until the 24th century when they start worrying about a klingon-federation alliance.
@@venomgeekmedia9886 Years ago my last gaming shop that ran mostly D&D/ Star Wars had a contest where everyone got a copy graph paper sheet with six D7s printed on them. Then everyone slowly hand drawn morph them into D'derdex warbirds.
The problem was that the Federation and Klingons had numbers. Could a single D'deridex warbird out fight four or five K'ovort/Ambassdor/Excelsior ships? To me it seems like you run into the whole Tiger/Panther vs. Sherman/T34 problem. Does your qualitative advantage become big enough to outmatch your opponents quantitative advantage? The other thing is that the Federation does have a bigger and more advanced industrial base overall; they only had a few Galaxy or Nebula Class starships but what if the Federation decided to start building them on mass then what?
@@venomgeekmedia9886 Then the Borg shown up. My friends back as teenagers in the early 1990's joke that after the Borg took out the Wolf battle engagement, if the Enterprise failed in bring down the Cube. There was a fleet of cloak warbirds just waiting about Earth to .. save .. the Federation so the Romulans could simply gloat over how they Defended Earth from cretin death.
yeah so i have one other episode planned for the Romulans, im then going to do a klingon themed series, the finale of which will be a cross over. regarding other species... its difficult,
@@IronWarhorsesFun probably not because firstly its too OP to be reasonably explained. and secondly there's very little information out there about its specs or its context.
I have always been disappointed in this ship. I have never seen grandiose battles involving it where It performs greatly. I see it in battles mainly in the dominion war it seems to get it's ass kicked a lot. It just doesn't seem to perform like the powerhouse it is. But after listening to your description of it I'm disappointed that they never did employed as the powerhouse it is It would have been great to see it in battle, a real battle
The Romulans during the Dominion War probably used the D'deridex warbird in squadrons and they would act as the hammer that smashes the Dominion fleets front line or their fixed installations; they can definitely do that better than anyone else. Then the Klingons and Starfleet ship would go in and pick the enemy apart and be providing close support to the D'deridex warbird squadrons. The Klingons and Starfleet did not seem to have many battleship type vessels during the war and that was a major handicap. The Romulans provided that.
@@venomgeekmedia9886 It would have been neat if DS9 did an episode where Captain Sisko's crew had to work with a Romulan ship on some mission and have battles where it was the Defiant and the Romulan fleet fighting against the Dominion. That would have been cool seeing the D'deridex warbird in action along with Captain Sisko's trying to suppress his knowledge and guilt about how he was the one who tricked the Romulans into the war.
Wow, Federation would've had their asses handed to them by the D'deridex class if Picard didn't avert the Romulan provocations back then (well, the Borg threat and Klingons were also keeping the Romulans at bay). My guess is the Romulan empire blew way too much money and resources to construct and maintain these gen. one singularity drive ships that they were reluctant to replace them with newer generation ships. This is largely due to them anticipating to stamp out the Federation in one blow with a swarm of these ships, but then the Dominion war happened.
Nah, in TNG, they’re portrayed as formidable ships, but not a mismatch for a Galaxy class, nevermind a Sovereign. Most of the usable hull volume is in the big “eagle head” bow section and the narrow engineering hull behind it, with the huge support struts for the engines seemingly serving no other purpose than looking cool. The Galaxy had nearly as much usable hull volume, almost as much firepower, better shields, and was faster and more agile. The D’Deridex was designed more to intimidate enemies than to actually win fights with enemy capital ships. Hence why the Romulans abandoned the design by Nemesis.
I wish I knew what happened to the crew of the enterprise and if the hull I read about being displayed in the romulan senate was indeed the hull of the enterprise c seems the only thing worthy would be the flagship of the federation
Most of the surviving Enterprise-C crew were apparently executed, with the major exception being Tactical Officer Tasha Yar (Its complicated), who was spared by the personal intercession of a high ranking Romulan officer, who took her as his mistress and who would eventually bare his daughter Selar.

Bull. The d-derrix has a top speed of warp 6, it was under gunned and weak sheilded for a ship its size. It was a paper tiger. Good for intimidating enemies. Excelsior, miranda, ambassador and other starfleet classes of the time had a top speed of at least warp 9. 2 Excelsiors are worth one d-detix in combat. A galaxy class starship is roughly an even match for a d-derix Warbird and that's before they were upgunned to fight the borg and dominion.
I was told by a Star trek fan once that the D'deridex warbird was in part developed from knowledge gained by anti Borg incursions in to the Alpha quadrant via Romulan space.
The only thing I can say, we have a lot of God-fearing, God worshipping, people loving pastors, and gospel artists in the world,. The sad thing is that they are being overshadowed by the Kirk Franklin's and these prosperity curupt pastors. We have to keep the body of Christ in prayer.
It was large but was not powerful. They are basically a glass cannon. OMG stop the BS that Starfleet wasnt trained for war or had no tactics. While yes they were primarily exploration. Their main missions was security for the federation. Just stop with this BS.
It's not really true that Starfleet was war ready. Yes, they were well trained and standards were high for officers, the organisation itself was basking in a half century delusion of pacifism. Its ships were woefully under powered compared to what they should have been had they been a war-ready power.

Wasn't Praetor D'deridex also an admiral who fought in the Human-Romulan War?
indeed he was.
I learned something today.
i remember in tng the first time a d'deridex decloaked and the sheer size then 2 more decloaked and i was like yea pricard is screwed welcome to new romulus !
yeah that reveal is so well done one of the best moments.
@@venomgeekmedia9886 amen . But why i like the romulins anti trekker explains well . They are honorable and negotiable. The original warbird concept at 19:45, looks like it could be a reimagining of the romulan phoenix class from the snes starfleet academy... I always really liked it as an old tos/movies era battlecruiser.
The Romulan High Command would never abandon the D' Do-Do Bird of Prey.
So good thanks!
great video
comander tebok, who was definitely not a cardassian spy...
I c wut u sed there!
Good stuff. Enjoyed your video
Romulan ships are so dang gorgeous.
Very nice job with this video. That is on bad ass bird.
This is one of my favorite ships in STO
The warp nacelles placement makes no sense as there is no up and down in space so it would not matter if it's above or below as that is irrelevant.
Oh and the federation puts its nacelles everywhere not just above.
The original series showed the romulans using klingon designed ships.
Yeah they were exchanged for the cloaking device.
i'm looking at my Ships of the Line calendar.
Key word "how ever", every time you heard it you drink. Lets see how drunk you get.
@@fjmj1980 Well, who said humans get a ship?

@@jkeelsnc they should have taken notes from the Riker Walk.
this war bird design is a very hansom design and it really does look like a bird and to be a captain of such a vessel would be a pleasure
I love the fact that the D'deridex warbird has almost unlimited power in that they do not need to refuel.
Specifications for d'deridex warbird: length: 1,350 meters, wingspan: 995 meters, draft: 367 meters, 106 decks tall, 2,000 crew, 4,000 troops, warp 7 cruise speed, warp 9 emergency speed, cloaking device, quantum singularity core,12 disruptor arrays, 3 torpedo launchers(800 plasma torpedoes) a huge but under armed ship for it's size
Also very small hill volume for their dimensions (which were not stated or commented on in TNG), with most of the usable space being up front and the nacelle supports being about 4x as large as necessary and accounting for a huge amount of mass that could have been better used for additional hull volume to store weapons.
Now that you have added the Tomed Incident and everything that led up to it, including the various Romulan vessels of the period, are you going to give this video another look and update its information, to help bring it into line with Tomed?
when I cover the Kithomer massacre and the ships of that period we will have come full circle.
around 23:00 music was way too high... started to drown out the narrator. Other than that... very cool info and presentation.
Good Video!
It’s a shame we never get to see a long battle focused on a Warbird. The most we really get is in the back ground of later battles in the Dominion war, usually only firing one beam from the front.
AMAZING!
Remember that DS9 episode where major Kira gathered a bajoran fleet to stop a Warbird from docking at that illegal hospital? Lmao they were lucky SF stepped in
yep although you have to admire the beach ball sized nuts on the bajorans for taking that risk.
Rusty trumbone easy 😂
'a warbird' you mean a whole fleet of them escorting some supply ships. serious ovarial fortitude on Kira's part.
@@weldonwin yet the bajorans were using antiquated starships.

The Romulan Big Chungus of Star Trek until the Jem'Hadar Big Chungus showed up in the Dominion War.
Good presentation, but the background music is far too LOUD!
What was the music that played in the opening
It preformed with extinction in the dominion war? The amount of times you see them as a burning wreck was clear that it was just one large glass cannon (St verison of old man with Ferrari). Everyone knows... the power of a ship depends heavily on who is writing the episode. I love the design of the ship- and full credit to the creator of this vid. But fanfiction cracks me up!
I've covered it in several episodes of "battlespace" you should see how it does there
It's not surprising to see destroyed D'Deridex Warbirds after fleet battles during the Dominion War as that ship wasn't really made for protracted slugging matches but ambush tactics and raiding strikes with its overwhelming frontal firepower.
That said I love what you do and the fact you make these ship breakdowns means that your battle videos feel so much more meaningful.
the music in some spots could have been done away with I've love the klingon and rom war birds and bird of preys
Jolan Tru! Good story but what was your source(s)? :) I adore the D'Deridex design. Impressive and epic WarGoose of the Supreme Power of Beta Quadrant. :D

when it comes to FASA ships there generally aren't enough pictures around to fill i have covered some in my Romulan Birds of prey episode.
Venom Geek Media 98 oh ok I just watched someone do a video it was cool but just wanted to see you fully break it down it seemed like the pre d’diderex almost but thanks man
Venom Geek Media 98 sorry I butchered that name but love the romulan ships

Plus it's slower and more power hungry than its galaxy class equivalent
Now do the Galaxy class.

name of songs ?
It's that funeral song.
Why didn't the romulans strike when they clearly had the advantage?
in a nutshell the federation-klingon alliance. they needed to destroy that before any kind of invasion.
@@ChairmanMo exactly thats why they try so hard in TNG to break that alliance to make the war winnable.

It just doesn't seem to perform like the powerhouse it is.
But after listening to your description of it I'm disappointed that they never did employed as the powerhouse it is It would have been great to see it in battle, a real battle
i will probably cover the romulan front of the dominion war in my 'Battlespace' series.

The Khitomer accords took place in 2293
I wish I knew what happened to the crew of the enterprise and if the hull I read about being displayed in the romulan senate was indeed the hull of the enterprise c seems the only thing worthy would be the flagship of the federation
Most of the surviving Enterprise-C crew were apparently executed, with the major exception being Tactical Officer Tasha Yar (Its complicated), who was spared by the personal intercession of a high ranking Romulan officer, who took her as his mistress and who would eventually bare his daughter Selar.
