Thank you! Your Wings series helped get me back into Trek. I really like how old the Nova looks compared to the D’Deridex and Valdore since the T’Varo always struck me as too 24th century, almost like an escort for the D’Deridex.
With that ugly Duck cramping their style I can see why the Romulans was happy to trade them in on the more Orion chick magnet D'Deridex that had a more cooler bad boy look ready for TV and the big screen. The Romulans showed to the Klingons and Starfleet how strong they are to be seen in such a ship and still hold their heads up. The Romulans and their big pointed ears are truly amazing people and buried the Nova class in their passed never to be seen in again. LOL.
I really want many of these late 23rd century Romulan fanon ships to be made canon- they're great designs and they bridge the gaps between the TOS era Romulan Bird of Prey and the TNG D'Deridex Warbird very nicely
Like the dreadnoughts of old, the Nova never saw the battle or even the war it was meant for. But it set the line that a battleship must cross to induce fear and to doom any ship that would oppose it alone. It was the beginning of Romulan battleship doctrine, a doctrine which would shape the wars of the future. The Nova was truly a historic and frightening ship, a landmark in the history of the alpha quadrant. Even with carriers starting to turn the tide once again in the 24th century , the Nova, and the battleships it gave rise too, will always be remembered as the rulers of the void.

In the past month, you’ve turned the Romulans in the motion picture era from a complete continuity chasm into perhaps one of the most interesting topics of trek! And the best part, is that as far as Beta Canon stuff goes, this really doesn’t have much in the way of errors. If anything, it makes the events of “Balance of Terror” all the more impactful. It RECONTEXTUALIZES what’s really at stake in that episode, and the Nova itself is basically a direct result of Kirk’s victory. There’s so much to unpack here, and I can’t wait to see how you handle the Tohmed incident (it’s gonna be my first time viewing about the incident, I haven’t read any of the novel depictions). Here’s wishing that these three new episodes get all the recognition they deserve.

I like the intermediate power system you came up for the Nova, between the purely fusion powered ships from the earth/romulan war all they way until the simple impulse BoP, and the singularity cores that probably debuted on the d'deridex. With the gravimetric and magnetic fields controlling the reaction instead of dilithium crystals doing it passively, it sounds like an overbuilt fusion reactor that's got antimatter piped into it. Probably expends a tremendous amount of energy just to operate as well, leading to the huge fuel consumption you mentioned, and the need of the secondary power system for when huge, high warp power draws isn't needed. At least the romulans can now generate enough power to get a ship up to warp 8+. This power system probably originated on that Thrai Dreadnought, something that large and long range would have needed it. While the nova's heavy weapons are impressive, the disruper coverage seems merely sufficient to cover all firing arcs, while an excelsior has 4 to 6 phaser turrets covering every angle, and would be a better brawler. But utilizing a cloaking ambush with all plasma torpedos ready, your Nova could probably destroy even an excelsior in a single attack run. Clearly, the Nova's existence is an unprecedented escalation that necessitates an arms race, and if the federation's latest battleship can be picked off with a single alpha strike, the excelsior might need to go back to the drawing board again, and an unorthodox countermeasures may be required...
possibly. especially as you suggest that the fusion and Antimatter reactors are essentially the same system. they might have experimented with injecting antimatter into the Thrai's reactor. I get that Star Trek is your passion, but I think similarly-styled videos in settings like Babylon 5, Space Battleship Yamato, and Legend of the Galactic Heroes would be really cool and maybe expand the channel (since you don't get enough exposure imo). A Battlespace series for the Dilgar War in B5 or the Galactic Empire/Free Planet Alliance war in Legend of the Galactic Heroes would put a huge smile on this scifi nerd's face. Great videos! Keep up the good work!
And do like how the Romulans had to change their entire doctrine based upon experience in it's failure. However, putting all their proverbial eggs in one basket meant they had tos tart over from scratch with decades of wasted time and technology since thier entire fleet at the time was focused /entirely/ on a single doctrine and operational plan and thus had no real flexibility. Romulan ego and surety in themselves clearly matched the Vulcans!
Honestly I can see how the Romulans may draw the wrong conclusions after a successful campaign against the Sassy Space Cats, because while the Kzinti are ferocious fighters, they are distinctly strategically inept, seeing as their one and only battle tactic boils down to "Scream And Leap"
I always figured that the D7s that were delivered to the Romulans had the weapon systems intact. How else would they end up with the exact same disruptor technology as stated in Generations? I believe that the "Type 3 Disruptor" mentioned in the movie is used by the Romulan, Klingon's and Breen. The Breen probably adopted the technology from that task force of Klingon ships that never returned from their space. I love the Nova though.
Great content - one observation - the exaggerated rolling of the R's was distracting (And I'm English we don't roll R's near as bad as this). Love the info on Romulan ships
FASA When Star Trek was truly great, and I know Genev Roddenberry wasn’t a fan of all the militarization in FASA’s Star Trek. But this is simply the best role playing Star Trek game, As well as the best Star Trek board game ever made! I wish I still had my FAFSA lead nova class battleship and Excelsior class battleship, I got rid of them when I had kids…….What a dumb ass.
If we did thought experiment the D'Deridex class war bird. What would she look like, how different physically in comparison and as well as what she's outfitted with. Make her a 23rd century introduction due to time travel Shenanigans. How could she work? What would Starfleet and klingon build in response
A part of me chuckles at the idea that Starfleet might have named their own Nova class as a way of dispelling the generational nightmare that this thing caused.
I think its interesting that it looks like the Thrai-Class is another direct ancestor of the D'Deridex, in fact I would go so far as to call the Thrai the first Warbird. I also like the point that, up till then, Romulan ship design had been very anonymous, indeed earlier ship designs had a very alien, very aquatic look to them often resembling a giant squid in space. This made sense, since the Romulans had gone to great lengths to keep as much about themselves secret from the other races, to the point that no one outside the empire actually knew what the Romulans even looked like until the Balance of Terror incident.
i think it was also tied to different artistic movements, the romulans are a very Aeasthetically minded people. i imagine in the 22nd century they were all about Aquatic Styles of art, that would even explain the Drone. then in the 23rd its all Modernist, with jet white and orange, and simple cruved shapes, then in the 80s the anima avis or Romantic movement comes in, and so on an so fourth.
@@venomgeekmedia9886 I still think that, by the 2280's, much of the veil of mystery about the Romulans had lifted, the Federation more or less know who and what the Romulans were now, so now they felt more free to indulge that artistic aspect. They aren't hiding their true nature any more, they are proclaiming to the galaxy "We are the Sons and Daughters of Romulus. Fears us and bow to us!"
@@weldonwin not as much as you'd expect. the two still know relatively little about one another by TNG. and remember romulan society is quite insular, generally you don't see them unless they want you to. in which case concealing their identity is almost counter to that purpose.
Nice design, However the Nova photon torpedo strength was 10 damage points, Star Fleet and Klingon ships had up to 20 damage points. FASA ship records.
What Romulan battleships lack in quantity they make up for in quality and sheer power. Novas are impressively poweerful and versatile ships, capable of handling two of any other Alpha quadrant ships of their era at once, and are frighteningly effective siege platforms once space-superiority has been achieved. I respect the Nova a whole lot more than the D'Deridex, even if the latter is vastly more recognizable and obviously much more powerful, because the Nova was truly innovative for her time and marked one of the few instances where the Romulan Star Empire decisively outpaced both the Klingons and Federation in military development. As the 24th century moved onward, Novas served with grace and distinction effectively deterring Federation aggression away from Romulan borders, while the D'Deridexes would show just how lax the Romulan Empire would become once put into real fleet combat action during the Dominion War. Unsurprisingly, the successor for the D'Deridex was far more economical and centered around fleet efficiency rather than being the singularly biggest ship in the Alpha quadrant, and heavily drew upon inspiration from the Novas.
Outpaced? If we are being fair it's more that it "Out-Gunned" it's counterparts. It's slower than an excelsior. And would probably be matched by the klingon D8 if it had happened. But then praxis happened which was a double edged sword for the romulans.
@@venomgeekmedia9886 By "outpaced" I meant technologically, not in terms of pure speed. If Star Trek follows real world logic to any degree, it took a lot of time and resources for major powers to go from producing ironclads to dreadnoughts. The pace of development is measured on those milestones. For example, Spain went from being premier world explorers and a major naval power to a has-been after a single war with the United States, once it became incapable of keeping pace in warship design and production. The Romulans may have averted war with the Federation entirely by producing the Nova when they did, and why outside of a few incidents peace would largely endure across the Alpha quadrant until the Dominion (and technically the Borg) arrived.
If I were to tell you that the moon was made out of cheese, would you believe that? Of course not. But now, if I tell you it's made out of sand.... You: Maybe. Me: If I tell you I know for sure? You: Then I would believe you. Me: So you now know that the moon is made out of sand? You: Yes. Me: But it isn't. You: I only said I knew because you said you knew. Me: I lied. Me: Knowledge isn't truth. It's just mindless agreement. You agree with me. I agree with someone else. We all have knowledge. We haven't come any closer to the truth of the moon. You can never understand anything by agreeing... by making definitions. Only by turning over the possibilities. That's called thinking. If I say I know, I stop thinking. As long as I keep thinking, I come to understand. That way, I might approach some truth. Me: That's the best conversation you ever had. You: Is it over? Me: You think it had better be.
I think to see one Nova was originally turned into the Z2 Nova updated version refit and it was used as like the excelsior Miranda as a workhorse it was used to bolster the romulan fleet and times of war I can see the Z2 Nova fighting in the Dominion war when the romulan sent most of their deederidexes out the fight they kept their 50 novas to defend the romulan homeworld and the colonies
Do you see this ship as an extension of the Romulans' more passive/reactionary foreign policy? The ship has a lot of guns but it doesn't seem to have the exploration/expansion capabilities of its Federation counterparts. Maybe this is why the Romulans get left behind later in the timeline. That and the supernova.
It's got longer range than most romulan ships of the time. Unlike the federation who put out their best ships for exploration the romulan prefer to use smaller cheaper ships. The Nova then follows.
An episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds alluded to that. In an alternate time line, Captain Christopher Pike commanded the Enterprise instead of Kirk, and he botched the encounter with the Romulan ship testing the Federation defenses along the neutral zone, leading to a second Earth-Romulan war.
Say this for the Romulans, they can be quite sensible and pragmatic, one would even dare to say logical when they check their egos and dedicate themselves to an endeavor.
Yeah their arrogance is more a facade here compared to later on where they are much more confident in themselves. They are much more pragmatic in the 23rd century in order to survive.
Absolutely loved it but you're still killing me with draft. Draft is a measure from the keel to the waterline and how deeply a vessel sits in the water...not its overall height. Still loved it as I do all your videos, keep up the good work sir.
venom geek media 98 is actually a code name for a romulan agent who disguise himself as a british historian. thats why there is a bit of dramatic storytelling
So the reactor and accumulator are the primary targets, a Galaxy class Federation Star Ship is going to have no problem, although their plasma enhanced shields could be worrisome
I've always thought it ironic that, in Star Trek, plasma tends to ignore shields while, in RL science, the closest thing to a real "force field" actually *is* magnetically contained plasma!
Something is off today... Somehow you don't sound like normal, but I can't quite figure out what's odd.... In case it's some sickness, hope you get well soon, anyways.

I love how this brings us forward with even their design motiff. Can't wait to see the Strange new worlds ships done here as well btw.
I have thoughts on SNW most positive but some not.
excellent!
22:13 what game is that
26:29 I believe this is the first time I've ever noticed that. How kind of Zordon to loan out a Command Center for the Khitomer peace talks.
And then Lore and his Borg-Cult would rent it out for the summer
Love it and your awesome
Well done. Had no idea that this ship was almost canon
Almost? It's squarely in beta right now. But we can dream.
Great video. I think you should profile the D'Talla-class Warbird next. I'd love to hear your take on it.
Only 4 were built, how small is the Romulan Fleet at that time
I liked the ship in Klingon academy but some weren't in cannon i heard.
Still gonna cover it.
Who created those amazing beauty shot paintings of the Nova? Does the artist offer prints of that work? Truly excellent!
Impressive how you roll the 'r's .
Oooh, Kzinti! Don't hear about them often.
Well I must say that that was one hell of a return for Wings of Romulus 💪💯 I am quite excited for what's to come, well done 👍
I love the Nova though.
also the fasa lead mini was a serious hunk of metal.
Love all the content and learning new trek lore. I am glad the word festooned was not used on this vid. Lol
Wouldn't have quite fit the tone.
@@venomgeekmedia9886 I know just giving you a hard time. Love all the content.
Badass ship
I lucked into a FASA miniature of one of these on eBay years ago.
I never liked the original FASA design but Starfox & JetFreak-7 have hit the spot!
I shall pass on your compliments
Great content - one observation - the exaggerated rolling of the R's was distracting (And I'm English we don't roll R's near as bad as this). Love the info on Romulan ships
FASA When Star Trek was truly great, and I know Genev Roddenberry wasn’t a fan of all the militarization in FASA’s Star Trek. But this is simply the best role playing Star Trek game, As well as the best Star Trek board game ever made! I wish I still had my FAFSA lead nova class battleship and Excelsior class battleship, I got rid of them when I had kids…….What a dumb ass.
I'm looking forward to this also but as a law enforcement officer I won't be smoking weed.
glad to hear it
lol 😂 yeah we don't want our rescuers and saviors all high and stuff
Will you have the Nova show up due to the events shown in ST SNW?
Don't forget to do one on the FASA Romulan Condor dreadnought!
The one based off the D7? I think that's from SFB. Which is even older.
@@venomgeekmedia9886 Nevertheless. It has a charm for me.
Not FASA, SFB, and not based on D7, based on old bird of prey King Eagle as secondary hull with a custom neck and command section up front.
@@gavinjoth5347 Fine SFB, whatever.
May I ask what game was shown about 22:55?
Armada 2 fleet operations.
@@venomgeekmedia9886 Thank You! Huge fan of your work by the way!
If we did thought experiment the D'Deridex class war bird. What would she look like, how different physically in comparison and as well as what she's outfitted with. Make her a 23rd century introduction due to time travel Shenanigans. How could she work? What would Starfleet and klingon build in response
Pinned Comment for Q&A
How tall is the Eiffel Tower?
@@HarperStl smart ass :p
@@venomgeekmedia9886 he he he
I mean, I'll find out in a few days, but hoping there was some info/images from the old DC comics (which featured the Z-1 quite a bit)
Is this Q&A specifically for this video or basically any Star Trek/Sci-fi topic?
i love that you are suing your Tarkin voice for this briefing. YOU MAY FIRE WHEN READY, those pink skins won't escpae us!
seems only appropriate for a ship with such apocalyptic firepower.
@venomgeekmedia98 SUPERB! Of your own design, I presume? or is it from fasa or another game?
A part of me chuckles at the idea that Starfleet might have named their own Nova class as a way of dispelling the generational nightmare that this thing caused.
Love that they called a ship the "Nova" since the Romulan star was gonna end up exploding.
Yeah sounds right. Romulan photons are more primitive which explains why they have more torpedo tubes.
If you just upgrade the Nova with new parts, does that give you a Super Nova in the skies of Romulus?
I’ll see myself out now.
Iv Looking forward to this . ( sir Christopher Lee voice)
Pls do a video about Romulan Republic ships from the Star Trek Online
i did cover this one... ua-cam.com/video/hz1icjM99fo/v-deo.html
Venom Geek sounds like Retro Badger ?
It would've been interesting what if the Second Earth-Romulan War ever happened.
A lot of people would die... depending on the era.
@@tcsmagicbox I still don't see that show as Canon.
@@merafirewing6591 Me neither, but it's an interesting "what if".

It is a shame Peter Ustinav isn't around to narrate these. I love Wings of the Red Star.
Absolutely loved it but you're still killing me with draft. Draft is a measure from the keel to the waterline and how deeply a vessel sits in the water...not its overall height. Still loved it as I do all your videos, keep up the good work sir.
I know. But it sounds much better than height. If you want maybe it could mean the height of the Hull sans the nacelles.
venom geek media 98 is actually a code name for a romulan agent who disguise himself as a british historian. thats why there is a bit of dramatic storytelling
Love the vid, though in my opinion using the term “exterminate” is not quite romulan enough, “neutralize“ has more of that covert evil flavor.
True. Although the effect is the same.
I hear the word "Exterminate" and naturally my mind goes to the screaming pepper pots of doom
Cue Thor Meme: YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!
So the reactor and accumulator are the primary targets, a Galaxy class Federation Star Ship is going to have no problem, although their plasma enhanced shields could be worrisome
Yeah but this is well before the galaxy class. Excelsior is just barely entering service.
I've always thought it ironic that, in Star Trek, plasma tends to ignore shields while, in RL science, the closest thing to a real "force field" actually *is* magnetically contained plasma!
i suspect the nova got back into service come the dominion war assuming they where simply mothballed
What's with the rolled "R's?"
Something is off today... Somehow you don't sound like normal, but I can't quite figure out what's odd.... In case it's some sickness, hope you get well soon, anyways.
Nah, I think he's just letting his Inner Tarkin out for this episode
Vulture?
Well-written great production value with the music etc. All that said, that accent you’ve affected is super-irritating. I think losing that “interesting” choice would take it from good to great!
Then Starfleet names it's Oberth replacement Nova 💀💀💀💀
