How to Actually beat Pokemon Emerald with Minimum Battles

- We tried using Torchic as our starter. We couldn't win. Now we try Mudkip, can it finally complete this challenge?

Rules: (1) Battle as few times as possible (2) Battle means any trainer battle (win or lose if no reset) or Wild battle where don't run away (3) No Items in Battle (4) No Glitches, (5) No Day Care
It was the champion's Gyarados "intimidate" that cause your 1st Earthquake to do so much less than your 2nd Earthquake after you switched
Was going to comment this if noone else did so well done sir 😎
Was just about to say the same thing
You managed to rack up an amazing number of likes… respect 🫡 (at the time of commenting: 420)
Thanks!@@ItsLoftyyy
Congrats on top comment but screw you for spoiling it for me lol
Is this a secret month of Jrose? This is 3 videos in like one week! You are the bomb man
Feels so good!!
HAPPY JTOBER!
Hes fr cracked!!! I am all for the moth of jrose! Joctobrose
5th video in 10 days
Jrose rocks
Week of Jrose at least :D
Exquisite Glalie impression, Jrose.
yeah, there were impressions I didn't quite like before, but the GLALIE was so cool
I fucking lost my shit when he did that lol
The Glalie Impression 🤌👌
I enjoy it more when the strat doesnt pan out as intended. It shows you can very much think on the fly and still drag out a victory even if the chances seem very slim ! Love the insight, love the solutions you come up with !
Yes! JRose is so good at not giving away the ending of the battle and keeping just enough wipeouts in we're never quite sure if things actually worked out lol. I far prefer challenges that force him to change up his strategy throughout the game then to ones with one strategy, minor changes, yknow? Not like I don't binge his entire channel tho lol.
Man, watching that little birdy you picked up in the beginning of the game FEARing three beefy rock types over twice it's level was super satisfying, real MVP right there. Great video! Been loving all of uploads lately!
I don’t know if you’ll continue this series, but Platinum would be a really interesting game to do this on. You get your starter, the Togepi egg, an Eevee (for HMs if nothing else), and a Porygon, plus being able to dig up fossils.
The most obvious obstacle is Cynthia
Hard enough in a normal playthrough when underleveled
iirc he briefly tried Diamond/Pearl on stream and it seemed kinda impossible, not sure about Platinum
@@DJFracuswhy was it impossible for Jose? I did it with Diamond a couple months ago and thought it was fairly manageable
@@shanemiller1182I looked into it a bit. I am unable to verify their locations, but it seems the “tag team” 2 battles vs 1 is still in effect until Gen V and BDSP, so theoretically you’d be able to catch another Pokemon to help.
HOWEVER, you get the Explorer Kit in Eterna City, and to my knowledge from the last time I played BDSP (which is a straight remake) there are no mandatory double battles that could force you to take a second Pokemon before that (Cheryl doesn’t count since it’s a multi battle on your side too). Meaning we can get Cranidos/Shieldon before the first mandatory tag battle without an optional fight, so we have to. Cranidos is preferable because at least it can learn Rock Climb as well as Strength and Rock Smash. The Level 1 Happiny is a useless piece of crap that’s no good to anyone.
That means we HAVE to take Piplup, and just like in RS, two of its moves absolutely have to be Surf and Waterfall because we can’t ever Fly. (This is why this would almost NEED to be done in Diamond because otherwise Empoleon would need to have Rock Smash too.) So you only have one useful Pokemon (meaning only two switches for death fodder) and two of its moves are HMs. Joy. Even in RS, we at least had four members and Wobbuffet could provide DB shenanigans. Not happening here.
Platinum is much better because you can at least get a Level 2 Togetic that can learn Fly, meaning you don’t need to tote HMs into the Elite 4, and you get a free Eevee that can be evolved into Vaporeon, so you can pick any starter you want. You also get a free Porygon that can be useful for odd jobs and fodder, and freeing Cranidos/Shieldon up to actually contribute.
@@aceclover758 platinum cynthia is mid. DP cynthia harder
Oh my lord, that ending was absolutely INSANE!
The Meteor Mash mish was clutch! It felt like watching a ADV game on Pokémon Showdown lol
I was cackling at the luck in the end there
I live in France so most of the time I see your videos early in the morning and get excited to watch it later that day and wonder what might happen.
Thanks for all the time you put into this. I enjoy the balance you've found between uploading Gen1 runs and other videos. It's very cool.
That dopamine hit you get when Jrose uploads a new video.
There is no comment more correct
Bruh I was just watching an old video and saw he uploaded!! Perf timing
😙👌 It's less deadly than Opium, but *nearly* as good a hit! 😚💨
The kind of dopamine hit that makes you say, "oh ya! That's the good stuff!" lol
💯💯💯
For April Fool's Day you should give yourself the easiest challenge possible but narrate it as if it's one of these insanely hard ones
Also thanks as always for the wonderful content. :) I'm curious to see how far minimum battles goes!
Something like "Can I beat Pokémon with only legendary Pokémon" or Mewtwo Solo run? They're obviously easy challenge runs,
The challenge could just be “can I beat Pokémon Emerald?”
Can I beat pokemon crystal with only belly drum snorlax?
MandJTV (if I remember right) did this a year or two ago with "Can I beat Pokemon Platinum?"
Love min battles. Having Fly makes the Elite 4 so much easier just by sheer virtue of having a proper moveset against them all.
Love the unexpected 6th Pokemon too haha.
That “hey everyone how’s it going?” really means a lot man
I felt it
41:40 I *think* that's a case of the AI preferring a speed-lowering move over a super-effective move! The same reason why Roxanne is less likely to use Rock Tomb when you're slower than her, iirc. At least, that's what I recall from anecdotal evidence - I'm sure there's a resource out there that's more reliable :P
That only happens when ai doesn't see the kill, but I guess cacturne needle arm on swampert at equal levels still isn't an ohko. I guess badge boost and a ton of IVs saved it.
Before the ending, I thought about if it were to happen that way; so seeing it end that way made me go nuts. This was so much fun to watch. You are one heck of an entertainer!
that glalie voice caught me SO off guard ahaha
That had me ROLLING XD

Jrose:minimum battle run
Me:so a regular swampert run?
Jrose swapping his pokemon around the Dusclops wasn't to try to get the kill with quick claw destiny bond, but to manip the RNG for the earthquake crit right after. So smart. I never would have thought of that
What an amazing finish and use of resources! Working around the full restores at the end was incredible
The last two battles against Wallace and Steven were CRAZY WILD! Awesome to see you finally finishing this challenge dude.
With Juan, using Swellow's Endeavor on Kingdra is the way more consistent play. Wobbufett can use Destiny Bond earlier in the battle which is just far faster and easier.
Swellow can't outspeed Kingdra. Plus it's 10% Focus Band vs 20% Quick Claw.
A win is a FREAKING win. GEEZ. That was the most intense minimum battle so far Jrose. Congrats!
Man, the more and more you see the route design of Emerald, the more you realize this region was built for a minimum battles run
My reaction to seeing this post: IT'S HERE!!! IT'S FINALLY HERE!! YES!!!!! I've been wanting this video ever since gen 1 minimum battles. Time to drop everything and grab a bag of chips.
I was re-watching your other minimum battles the last couple of days while being ill and just yesterday I watched the latest Emerald video thinking "damn I hope Jrose is going to continue the series soon". I am so happy right now, feels like early christmas. Thanks for your content!
Edit: Also there's no way you pronounced the first Rocks-Anne that way unintentionally right? :D
Hey man, just wanted to let you know that I love watching your vids. Keep it up, you're super chill
Getting consistent videos and it's not even the month of JRose? I'm all here for it!
I was hoping you could have gotten the 2nd Return TM in Pacifidlog to use on Wallace's Gyarados. It's a strong, neutral and physical move, which would be your strongest hit on the Gyara (post-Intimidate). Probably it wasn't possibly to reach Pacifidlog within Mininum Battles. But maybe even Strenght could've been better? Either way, you achieved victory so why am I rambling! Big GG for the victory! Best of luck for your next challenge runs!
I don’t know for sure since the maps online aren’t very clear, but I’m like 99% certain Route 130 and 131, which you need to get there, is gated behind a trainer on Route 129 that blocks the way in.
So happy to see Swellow doing this good in a run!
glalie impression gave me GENUINE CHILLS bro. Oscar worthy.
This video was so good, the parallels between Tate & Liza and Steven with Claydol outspeeding..
I love having a Jrose11 video saved up for just the right time or day. Is there going to be another "Month of Jrose" this year? That was great last year and if I remember correctly it started right after everyone else stopped their Halloween content. This really is just the best time of year
😄👍
Nicely done Jrose! It's pretty nuts to think this kinda thing is doable in all honesty
Your Norman fight had me hopping up and down how you threw Wynaut away when it could have used Charm on the Slaking. That fight is a mass amount of RNG but there were options with Charm/Mud-Slap + Mud-Slap on Marshtomp.
Nothing like waking up with a new JRose video being uploaded a few minutes before :D
Hey Jrose, IDK why but I am always glad to see one of your videos! Maybe because they are so relaxed or maybe I find your voice relaxing, who knows. Thanks for your videos, sometimes I guess we think some things are a given, not a gift.
Never would have expected that little bird you caught would turn out to be so Swell
Smooth, sweet, and too the point. Did that sound weird? Maybe, but it’s minimum battles so anything goes!!!
Damn just yesterday I watched the first part from months ago and was wondering if this sequel will ever come out. Thanks buddy!
It's hilarious how smugly people will be completely wrong on the internet. To say that a minimum battles playthrough doesn't count without beating Steven, even though Steven is optional and puts you above minimum battles, is asinine.
Long, LONG awaited sequel to the other video
I was listening to this video on my way to work, and was absolutely blindsided by the "GLALIE!". Literally laughed out loud. XD
When I was in high school, we held a tournament on PM Stadium 1. The rules were simple, you could play blue or red, pick whatever six in your party (except Mewtwo) and could only play the games for 8 hours! Would love to see a video on this, where'd you'd end up!
"who would watch a jrose video at 3am?"
"oh boy! 3am!"
You know it's so fun to watch you do all of these challenges because they were an idea I had as a kid but had no intention of ever testing. I remember it first occurring to me during the absolute grind that is Watson during a first playthrough. Level 28 is too damn high for that area of the game. Made me wonder if all the volbeat slaughter was really necessary, if all those elektrike really had to perish. I even picked mudkip my first time at 8 years old. That electric bastard. That's why I like poison types, because koga fucks, and not only does he fuck, but his daughter was so badass that she managed his gym. Fucking love Koga
What a fantastic run, thanks for including the Steven battle at the end!
It has been well documented that if you outspeed your opponent's Pokémon in Gen 3, and the Pokémon has a way to change that (be it lowering your speed or raising theirs), the AI will prioritize doing that. That's why Sidney's Cacturne only went for Needle Arm after a successful Cotton Spore.
Also, I noticed that Wallace's Ludicolo seemed to always use Double Team first turn, so you could have switched straight into Wobbuffet and possibly saved Anorith to be sacked later in the battle (maybe to counteract Gyarados's Intimidate?)
“Who watches a new Jrose video at 3AM?”
Me: Oh boy! 3AM
Holy guacamole! Steven beaten on minimum battles? That's impressive.
I just wanted to say that I am a BIG fan of your videos. They always brighten up my day, thanks man! Cheers from Argentina
I lost it when you said "glalie". Thanks so much for the content!
Ahaha- the way you said "Glalie" turned my two nieces (they love your vids!) into an inconsolable giggly mess, and for that I both thank you and wish a gen 1 miss on you 😂😂
The insane ending! Wow! I'm very impressed, never seen a challenge like this before and it seems very cool! Thanks for the video ^_^
A question I've often wondered about in Minimum Battles runs:
If you had an Abra and used Teleport as a guaranteed flee, would that count as a battle? On one hand, it uses a power point and take Abra closer to being able to use Struggle and therefore attack; on the other hand, the move itself is functionally a guaranteed run.
I'd say it counts as battling for 2 reasons.
1. It requires you to pick "fight" to use it
2. It involves all the normal battle calculations(speed comparison to see who goes first, evaluates the enemy AI, etc), whereas running only checks if you can run or not(and if not it does the rest of the stuff).
It's battling to the effect of running away, but it's still battling.
To what end, though? Could teleport enable you to skip any trainer battles? I doubt it
@@scragar I would tend to agree. I feel it's a bit of a grey area, in the same way as using a Poké Doll for a guaranteed run is also a bit of a grey area.
@@Medabee8 Not Trainer battles, no. I'm sure we've all encountered the ever-frustrating "Can't escape!" message when the Level 31 Dugtrio shows up in Diglett Cave though, and as it's an automatic battle ender that doesn't result in EXP, there's grounds to ask if it would count.
That's why I have the Smoke Ball so I can garuntee a run from most Wild Encounters, though I haven't ran into Shadow Tag while doing it
Your Glalie anime cry impression is always perfect! XD
1:01 Rocks an' what? You never finished that sentence.
Your Pokémon's affection increases if you're running or biking around with a full party.
Can you please do a R/S/E solo run with the legendary pokemon as well? Like the birds and dog trios in RB GS?
Holy pudding, those wins against Wallace and Steven were insane! Glad you were able to pull off this minimum battles victory! Congratulations!
Well done Jrose. Personally I think you missed a few things that would make this run much easier.
1. Easily grindable game corner. This is a game where the game corner is easily grindable. This means that the game corner TMs are freely available from when you get to Mauville. Ice beam would have had value. Thunderbolt on castform instead of shockwave could help too.
2. Set up moves/TMs. You mention that you like to keep TMs for the elite 4. That's fine. Use them in elite 4. Either calm mind or bulk up would have made Wallace/Steven much easier. I think level 60 marstomp with evs would have outsped level 56 ludicolo, so if set up it could have one shot.
3. PP management. Giga drain only has 5 PP. AI trainers have PP in gen 3. So have marshtomp out. draw giga drain (swap to swellow) giga drain now only has 4 PP. Bring Marshtomp back in, draw giga drain (swap to castform) giga drain now only has 3 PP and so on through the roster until Wallace runs out of PP.
would have liked to see what battles were required in between the big ones. great video overall. you are always fun to watch.
jrose: Hears "theory", thinks "a gaaaame theory!"
Me: Hears "always, always, always", thinks "play around the critical hit".
Nice video! Will you complete some past third-generation runs (like the Sunkern one) by battling Steve? Even without making videos of them.
I was wondering why you wouldn't try guts and/or facade strats with taillow/swellow, but then I realized that in order to get yourself pre-statused for a big fight you'd have to do an extra battle or do some convoluted routing. More reason that the game should add an npc that can inflict a status effect on your pokemon outside of battle
Love the video, but quick question: What about the Team Aqua battles in the Underground Sea Cavern? Was that part of the count when you made this video?
Rock Tomb could have been learned by Swampert to make Gyrados easy on the champion fight.
Omg yay! I loooove your gen 3 content 😍
I've seen so many of your solo challenge runs it felt super unsatisfying to see how you beat Norman haha, but hey it's not a solo challenge it's a "can you do it?" challenge.
Thank you for nostalgia hit!
I remember that i was also using Shell Bell Swampert and i also swept elite 4 with it.
I did this challenge with Sableye and I think its the easiest way to do it. The biggest thing is you do not want to level up your partner Pokemon at all, even in double battles, all exp should be for mudkip as much as possible.
Getting sableye makes brawly, may 2, and Norman much much easier. Because sableye resists brawly, can do damage on grovyle, and resists Norman’s spinda and linoone.
The tradeoff is sableye can’t learn strength or waterfall so you have to keep those for the elite four - this makes e4 much more difficult than marill method. HOWEVER, I realized you can go to the pokemon league with swampert poisoned (from wally's roselia) walk all the way back to lilycove, delete those moves, and faint swampert, and you'll go back to the E4.
Note there are some quirks with leveling you have to be aware of. in basically all double battles I kill my teammate to max mud kip’s exp
For the sableye method if you don't not your rare candies before Wallace and once you do you’ll be at level 66 for him. Also use rest for Juan, brick break for Sidney. Obv destiny bond is needed for both methods as well as shell bell.
Minimum battle challenges are my absolute favorites that you do, keep em coming
I’ve been waiting on this one 😭🙏
Nothing says you love pokemon than trying to beat the game with playing the minimum possible of it :P
Love the videos, keep your head up in these trying times.
I was legit about to go to bed. Guess I'm up for a bit longer.
Whenever Jrose uploads i get a happy feeling inside me
"You may wonder why I have a taillow" yup, reset coming in this run
i started doing the 'GLALIE!' thing befoure these videos but now its even better XD
Perfect timing. I was literally watching the fist attempt earlier today.
Cool, can't wait to see how Diamond Pearl turns out.
I imagine it will look quite different since you can dig up infinite fossils so you can just fill up your whole team with fossils.
Platinum will also be interesting as excluding fossils you get 5 gift mons.
Though if Jrose wants an easy minimum battle challenge run, you can do an SV run that doesn't ban exp candies.
Essentially you get a female Fuecoco, the first Lechonk encounter can't be skipped so remember to catch a male one.
Then start a picnic and get 4 Fuecoco eggs (actually 1 is enough since you just need 3 Pokemon for Team Star, but it's funny to have a whole team)
Then you just traverse the whole land to pick up as many exp candies as possible to level up your starter and start smashing all the bosses. All the trainers in the wild are skippable.
Diamond _might_ be possible with some luck, as it falls into the same pitfalls as Ruby/Sapphire. Pearl straight-up isn’t happening because Empoleon (the only possible starter) has to carry Rock Climb since Shieldon can’t in addition to Surf and Waterfall, meaning it basically has nothing for the Milotic.
Platinum definitely has potential.
Was starting to worry you gave up on this challenge, awesome video! Did you try using guts Swellow? Might be wrong but that could have been the hard carry?
That wouldn't work as well as you think it would work
That would require extremely good planning, I believe. You can't just go into the tall grass to have a wild Pokemon status the Swellow, after all, because minimum battles.
That is a good point, did not consider that, yet still think it could have helped seeing as he wanted to used the Swellow a lot. Would require planning and some healing items, yet it would have made the Normon fight way easier @@TWLSpark
@@Leader1934 To be fair, it would've been easier if he hadn't feed so much exp to the Swellow for nothing (it was for the Endeavor strat, but in the end he couldn't even pull it off). Guts would've also made the battle infinitely more manageable, but I think just not bothering with Taillow after Brawly (or Rival 3) would've been infinitely easier than routing for Guts in this challenge.
But I'm also lazy, so take my opinion with maybe more than a grain of salt.
@@TWLSpark I did this exact challenge with what you said before Jrose11 ever did generation 3 minimum battles, in fact I was the one who suggested Taillow in his Twitch chat (I think before he even started Emerald, while he was doing Ruby/Sapphire). But Jrose ended up using Taillow far more than I did, mine ended the challenge at something like level 16 I believe. I only used Taillow for Rival 2 and Brawly (and Fly). I'm not sure if my way was easier or harder, yeah Swampert was stronger but he got a fair amount of mileage out of Swellow on some parts. I actually got stuck on Tate&Liza without Rare Candies and had to use them all on Swampert to defeat them. Never even attempted Steven but I really doubt I could've done him without the Endeavor cheeses. Other than that I think it was around the same difficulty though.
But the actual easiest way is to use Nincada as your second Pokemon (mostly for Shedinja). I also did the run with the traded Seedot from Rustboro but it wasn't really worth the trouble because Shiftry was not useful at all until Tate & Liza (Xatu and Lunatone can't hit him so you can just target the other two).
Seeing a new Jrose video uploaded always brings a smile to my face. Thank you so much for the many hours of enjoyable content!
So many videos so close together I almost ignored this one thinking it was an old video haha
Burning or poisonning Swellow before champion battles to have Guts active would have made battles (especially Gym 5) much easier
How could you get burn/poison with minimum battles?
@@nakano281 well, need to check if there are any Statik / Numel / Point poison users on the trainer route. Then dont go to Pkm center and use Potions for healing. But I agree this sounds complicated
"The Internet has truly changed my brain" mine too JRose, mine too
I sit here thinking "just go grind a few levels" then I'm like "oh wait"
haven't watched the video yet, but i am so excited the Last emeral Minimum Battles video was my favorite video of yours
You really need to nickname that Swellow and Swampert, what an awesome final final battle
Quick Claw Destiny Bond is so degenerate I kinda love it.
nice run. are the legendary battles not required? haven't played emerald in a while but i thought you had to at least fight rayquaza
not required
Nope. You have to reach Rayquaza for the story, but it doesn't battle you.
Interested in this challenge, I always do it inadvertently because i skip as many trainers as possible between Fortree and Lilycove, and I'm interested in knowing if i'm being as efficient as possible.
I go back later though, I'm just talking about the initial run between the two cities.
Just loved the final fantasy 7 song there, perfect timing
Seeing Jrose switch pokemon is unnerving.
I’m very happy to see part 2 to this installment of minimum battles :) this was very worth the wait
Minimum battles challenge is just how I played as a kid. I was out there stealthing around spinners
I love all Jrose videos but, gen 3 has a special place in my heart. Him playing sapphire, ruby or emerald (or leaf grean/fire red) is just amazing to me.
Play a battle enough times and eventually you see stupid luck. Eventually some combo will occur. It's not the odds of that specific combo happening, but any combo with generally equally favorable results. IMO your strats were good. The rest was patience and the confidence that you could power through with time.
Also Steven threw the fight by being distracted. If you ever watch FlygonHG's videos, you know his family life weighs heavy on his mind. :D
45:13 And we knock out the *GLALIE*
I was not expecting a reprise. Yet I needed it. Thanks JRose.
Edit: 45:30 *GLALIE!*
Ive been waiting for this since the last one
Realistically the best way to do this challenge would involve some form of guts tailow, and then you get past several battles at lower levels due to the increased damage.
This would either
a) mean you could just increase swamperts level a fair bit more before norman (and make flannery fight trivial)
b) tailow even becomes your main pokemon, the problem is going to be the psychic gym here though
You can't really control Guts in this challenge. You can't fight a wild pokemon to status yourself and the status orbs don't exist yet.
I cheered out loud watching that final battle. I get a little “too into” pokemon challenges by JRose.
Jrose slowly transforming into a speedrunner
