Have you ever seen Mel’s acceptance speech for his Oscar? He thanks “Gene Wilder” at least 5 times. Zero was Zero, he was funny. But he was being Zero. Gene brought things to his performance that were just genius. In Mel’s book he told something that floored me. Dustin Hoffman was supposed to be Leo Bloom. But he told Mel his agent had gotten notice that Mike Nichols wanted him to come to LA and audition/screen test…whatever for THE GRADUATE. “Annie’s picture she’s going to do?” “Yeah.” Mel knew he’d never be chosen to play Ben in THE GRADUATE. So he wasn’t worried, “he’ll be back”. Then he needed a Leo. Anne was doing a play with Gene and told Mel to meet him. Bless Mike Nichols. Dustin Hoffman as Leo Bloom? He’s a great actor. But Gene Wilder was meant to be Leo Bloom. Thank you,God, and Anne, and Mel.
@@cards0486to layer your comment, Hoffman was the opposite of what the studio and producers of The Graduate had in mind. Robert Redford was supposed to play Dustin's part. In one movie, Mel parodied Broadway, 1930s Hollywood musicals, 1960s counterculture, totalitarianism, capitalistic greed, and sexual stereotypes. Do any movies today have this much wit?
One of the greatest actors ever to grace the stage. I’m 28, I watched most of his films with my dad, and I’ll damn sure ensure my kids watch these films with me too :)
Dick Shawn as L.S.D. -- over the top! I loved the reaction of that bearded guy in the seats! HA! Shawn was great in "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World." The looks on the faces of the people in the audience during "Springtime for Hitler" is priceless! "The Producers" is insane genius! I remember going to the cinema to see it when it premiered.

I saw this on broadway in New York. It was a surreal moment to be sitting in Broadway theatre, watching springtime for Hitler the way it should've been seen!
Ditto here! I saw "The Producers" on Broadway back in 2001, I think. It was absolutely fabulous! Seeing the Springtime for Hitler number in person was awesome. But this 1967 classic will never be outdone! It is comic genius! Mel Brooks won his only Oscar for the Screenplay. Wilder was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. It's in my Top 5 favorite comedies!
Just like at a funeral for a loved one,....if someone makes you laugh at a joke or a memory.....surely it's a good thing.....Laughter eases the pain,..even if it is for a short while ........May the laughter never end!!!!!
As close to the most perfect comedy film possible. A brilliant premise magnificently written and performed by the most perfectly cast troup of actors imaginable. Mostel and Wilder brilliant, but all the support players are also superb. You can just re-watch it endlessly; every scene is hilarious.
I didn’t see this in a theater. I was 15 or 16. I don’t even remember seeing listings for it. A few years later I saw it on TV. Angels sang, and a little voice inside (sounded like Gene) said,”This will be the funniest movie you ever see.” I was changed that night. I fell like a rock for Gene Wilder. He was the greatest comedic actor in the world, I was sure of it. And I wanted to tell everyone I was friends with that they HAD to see THE PRODUCERS, because it was the funniest movie ever. But I couldn’t give them a summary of the plot because I would start to laugh so hard I couldn’t finish. I adored Gene from that point on, and saw everything he did. I was heartbroken when he got in such sad shape from Alzheimer’s. Life is most cruel to do that to Gene. I miss him every time I see him in something. But I’m grateful to have all the movies and so many interviews to access on UA-cam. I’ll always love him. He was so dear.💕
I've never seen this movie but I've been watching clips all morning and I can tell that this will become one of my favorite movies of all time! How am I 35 years old but have never seen this!? Makes me wonder how many other things in life I'm missing out on!
This movie was wild for my mom and dad. My dad grew up with Zero Mostel, friends for a long time. My mom dated Dick Shaun's brother for two years, and she got to know him really well.
Would never be allowed to be released in current socio-political environment. Progressive extremists have killed satire & comedy. Mel Brooks is satirical genius, also see Blazing Saddles & Young Frankenstein but all the rest as well. The production values of The Producers in retrospect were remarkable. I had forgotten how significant this film was until I stumbled across this montage whereupon my memory reignited. Watch again or watch for first time, just watch!
This was a funny movie but I think it went over a lot of people’s heads. There were also people who got “offended” over Springtime for Hitler. I’m a messianic Jew (only 11% Jewish bloodline) and I saw the humor in it. Sometimes people just need to get a life rather than attack things that they don’t understand.
Oddly enough, a friend of mine was asking what was going on at a company he was invested in and my first question was why anyone would want to run a company into the ground. Then I remembered this movie - so long as it goes bust, nobody asks where the money went.
absolutely too funny! the crazy hippie was from my hometown. My friend was playing quarters at 1am Saturday night at his buddies house. They heard a key in the door....it was him! lol he was my friends older brother.
The people in the audience were offended? Why did they go see a play called Springtime for Hitler? What did they expect? A serious discussion on painting in the spring?
Even if the show was a flopped enough investors could have gotten together and demanded an audit of the books. If one or more investors failed to see their name on one of the books as one of the investors, that would have been a sure sign of impropriety and would have raised suspicion of their being two separate books for bookkeeping(One book showing that only $100,000 was raised and another book showing that $900,000 was raised even though it only cost $100,000 to produce the show). The Producers surely would have gone to jail if indeed that happened.
He's the author of the play they're hearing rehearsals for "Springtime For Hitler". The actor is Kenneth Mars and he nails the role with comedy both subtle and gross. Lol
"Rip off" is a little extreme. Similar basic premise-- fix your financial problems by making a show so bad it'll flop and you keep the investors money. The resemblance ends there.
Zero Mostel should've been Oscar-nominated for this! At least Mel won for the script.

My favorite is in the Hitler auditions, there’s a band with a saxophone and there’s no discernible saxophone sounds in the music 😂
No drum set or drummer and yet...
And the keyboard girl is wearing a harmonica a la Bob Dylan, for no reason.
The shot at 0:33 with the sudden close-up is one of my favorite shots in film history. The clever cinematography makes the film even more amusing.

Mostel is great, a classic comedy figure looks a lot like an old Greek film comedian and his style fits perfect old Greek and Italian comedies.
I agree. Not giving Mostel the lead in "Fiddler on the Roof" was a tragedy. Why give it to a complete unknown like Topal?
Cmon, Topol nailed it
