Unlocking Hendrix's Vibe Tone

- Опубліковано 30 чер 2024
- Today, we're testing out four high-quality vibe pedals (with the help of guitarist Jules Leyhe) to determine which one most accurately recreates the vibe tones of the legendary Jimi Hendrix! We'll try each Uni Vibe pedal on its own, then with a vintage Fuzz Face, and vintage Tube Screamer, showing how the vibe reacts in multiple contexts.

Try the Drybell Vibe best I've every played it's in my permanent rig live and studio
No Funky Vibe with TS. Did it not play well with it or just forgot? Thanks for the vid
Best I have ever played or owned in order (we all have different taste)
1 Real Honey Vibe- of course that's why we are here💓
2 God Vibe- very close but didn't have that pre-amp sound, also has 2 speed functions
3 Sweet Sound Ultra Vibe & 4 Sweet Sound Mojo Vibe- both great clones and had that swirliness we all crave
5 Sir Tinsley I had to turn the intensity up way high but the sound is still great
6 King Tone 1968- very good but I had to adjust it, thge dual speeds is a good addition though
7 Drybell - too much adjusting to get it to get the "throb" a vibe is known for
@@jimmyhumphrey_5975 it's very good among the compact versions. As is the King Tone 1968.
@@popeye089 the intro had the TS-9 on, I think we might have missed the label on screen. The Shin Ei was designed by the guy that made the Sir Henry and he hand built the first 100 or so every made of the Vibe Bro (Honey). The Sir Henry is what the original hand-built unites of Shin Ei were supposed to be. Never heard the God Vibe.
Robin Trower, another landmark for univibes, has been using Fulltone for many many years
Those tones!!! It was awesome shooting this with you Dr. Mason 🙏🏼⚡️
Thanks for shredding Jules!
two years later this is still miles from the Hendrix tones.
One thing is for sure, there's no shortage of Uni-vibe effects out there now.
No sir!
There’s a large lack of affordable univibes that actually sound good
YOUR POSTS ON THE UNIVIBE ARE THE BEST ....like all the other subjects you discuss. Well done ! I have a Nico Sabbadius MASTERMIND univibe and a Fillmore East , TinyVibe , Sir Henry , and Fulltone DejaVibe.. I think the Analogman SunFace Fuzz is the best of that lot.
The sir henry is amazing! Nothing out there compares. And Dustin is wonderful to work with.
The tones sound amazing! I’m going to see how I can tweak my HX Stomp to sound this amazing. Keep on inspiring us for better more funky tone.
Not sure the HX will get there.
Great video & tasty playing… some great vibes. I’ve had a Dejá-Vibe CS-Mkii mini and a Sabbadaius Funky Fillmore East and I loved both of them. But now have an Electronic Orange Moonvibe, which is an immensely fantastic vibe. It has a symmetry control which allows you to compensate tone - allowing the player to get the most out of the pedal for cleans, grit or fuzz. Great idea and sounds killer. Definitely worth a look. Super-happy with mine.
Great! I'll have to check it out!
Fantastic review! 🎸❤
Thanks for watching!
Loved the video.

I very much enjoyed this! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!
beautiful job on Hey Joe!!
Just bought my first Vibe pedal last week, went with the EHX Good Vibes after taking a crash-course in UniVibes from Josh Scott and learning about which pedals have the photocell bulb. I originally wanted the MXR univibe but decided that it sounded too close to a regular phaser. Still a cool pedal but I wanted the real univibe thing. I have it first in my chain, into an orange rocker 15 terror and it sounds glorious.
Excited for this episode, thanks Mason!
Nice!!! Enjoy! Hope we earn your subscription :)
@@VertexEffectsInc the content is consistently top-notch, you’re definitely one of my favorite subs. Most of the content I watch is informational, and the best channels blend a little bit of history in too. Thanks again!
My love Pedal Pickle Vibe gets me by...Great video guys!
What ever gets you thru the night. Just kidding.
Lot's of people dig the Pickle Vibe for a compact solution
Great Video and great playing! Thx. I would highly recommend vibe before fuzz though, Sabbadius also recommends it like that.....yes, the other way around is what Hendrix did, but his amp was overdriven, and that makes all the difference.
We're not litigating signal path in this video, but rather Hendrix vibe tones. His amp wasn't very overdriven, this is spelled out well in the latest Hendrix amp made by PRS. If this were true, then leave the TS-9 on as your broken up preamp stage after the vibe and then use the fuzz, it would simulate a more accurate signal path if Hendrix's amps were as dirty as some think, however a 100W Plexi is about as clean as a Twin Reverb in terms of it's difficulty to distort.
@@VertexEffectsInc Have you ever played a 100 watt plexi cranked?
@@kalejoe6599 I own a '68 and '69 Superlead 100, definitely know them well. This is also validated in the PRS Hendrix amp where they remake the Woodstock amplifier 1:1 and state, it's pretty clean still.
@@VertexEffectsInc I think that most of the time Jimi was rolling the volume back on his guitar getting a clean sound and then turning it up and turning the Fuzz on for really outrages rhythm parts and solos and getting a overdriven tone but even when the Fuzz is off and Jimis turned the volume up on his guitar and in my opinion their is still a fair amount of distortion but it is definitely not a lot of distortion.
@@VertexEffectsInc First off, loved the video. You both did a great job of demonstrating some practical application of these pedals in addition to their subtle (or not subtle) differences. I don't have a comment on the amp part of the point, but I do want to mention that in a conversation about a month ago with Dustin (Tinsley Sir Henry) he also recommended placing the Vibe at the front of the chain (ahead of fuzz). Thanks for making this video!
This was incredible. I’d never heard of the Sir Henry and it was by far the best. I’m in the midst of a Univibe tone chasing frenzy so this video was super helpful. Really love your content and please please please do another Univibe shoot out.
I’d like to see you shoot out some cheaper ones and see if they hold up ato any of the expensive boutique ones or if they have any unique qualities or strengths that are worthy of consideration.
I’d like to hear the Rotovibe, and the Voodoo Labs Micro Vibe. I own both of these pedals but I can’t get what I want out of them. I wanna hear him play them to see where I’m going wrong.
Also I’m curious to hear the BBE Soulvibe.
Perhaps a video for the future :)
Jules' index finger vibrato is insane! can't take my eyes off everytime he do that!
Thank you Hendry! :)
Heck yea...he's the best!
@@julesleyhe Indeed, Jules. Your vibrato is masterful, sir.👍
I've got an outstanding late 68/69' original that is just strong as hell. The thing about a "good" original is the depth and dimension of the sound that is difficult to replicate, and apparently to my ear the bandwidth. It's not just about how deep some of the vibes try to go, it's how BIG they sound. And of course the symmetry of the cycle..... a great one has that "Ying Yang, Ying Yang, thing and not just a deep pulse. The super deep notch thing seems to be easy to do in clones. Also I find the difference to be in my original, it remains full and big even with distortion or fuzz, ...... so many seem to fall short in that area and get "small" or too fizzy. The oldie just stays big and bold. All that being said, I have a Custom shop MJM 60's Vibe that is maybe the closest of any I have played against it, which is most of them...... Not enough people talk about the MJM. I once owned Fulltone Deja Vibe #39 if I recall, I may have that mixed up with Fulldrive II oldie, but either way, they were both early to mid 90's when I bought them and under 100 serial number plain metal boxes with label maker markings, the old silver project box ones. To my ear it didn't do machine gun as well as it did Trower. It was a bit phasey'r if that's a word. Killer for Trower stuff. I do have and love the Drybell now and it's VERY good, small, and the symmetry is adjustable to taste. But for stock original I put my vote in for the MJM. Great vid Mason!
Thanks for watching!!!
Sir Henry and the early Vibe Bros are the best I’ve heard. I still have a Vibe Bro that Dustin built and it holds it own against my vintage Univibe. As someone who went though the lifelong journey of getting to know many different vibe pedals across the price points, I would say that if it’s a super important sound to you then save up for a serious unit like the Sir Henry. The smaller pedals just don’t have nearly the same “oomph” and dimensionality in the room. You also need to feel how they respond for yourself, rather than make a decision based purely on audio shootouts (which also usually suffer from UA-cam compression).
They're great! Dustin is amazing!
The Kingtone and Formula B ones do.
Sabbadius, Argenziano, R Weaver and others, are building vibes of the same quality.
I’ve owned or played so many of them, and a big difference in many of the small units is no preamp, and/or they’re too mid focused, but vintage ones each have their own character as well. Some get faster or slower than others.
There’s also Vibes that sound stellar in isolation, but get lost in a mix, or too muddy.
*Ultimately, it comes down to what you said about how important the effect is for the player, then how it feels and/or inspires when choosing one.
Sabaddius is the best of all!!😍
It's a great one :)
I beg to differ, violet vibe is no.1
The Fulltone is bland. No thanks
Sabbadius rules!
I really love my Funky Vibe Fillmore but Sir Henry was stunning as well. Foxrox Pro Vibe is also one of the earliest reproductions of Uni Vibe I believe. My recent interest is for Gypsy Vibe by Argenziano effeti, which is also a beautiful piece.
All great ones :)
Loved the tinsley
It's a great one!
The amp needs to be in overdrive and place the fuzz after the univibe in the signal chain, it sounds much better that way
right of the bat excellent
Thanks for watching!
I remember seeing the great jazz guitarist Gabor Szabo once using a Strat and an original Uni-Vibe. He had the expression pedal too. After seeing him use one I wanted one but even back then, being in college it was beyond my budget. I had just bought a really expensive (for the time) classical guitar because they wouldn't let me play classical on my Les Paul TV model in school as a classical guitar major. lol. :)
❤❤❤❤
Jules channel looks nice. I guess hence the name guitars and cameras. I’ll be checking out some of his videos after this. Vibe is my favorite and most overused effect. I just got the moen shakes jimi vibe with an octave fuzz . I’m really digging it but the dejavibe is my all time favorite.
Nice! Jules does great stuff!
Thank you Scott! Hope you enjoy the channel
I’m lucky to own the Sabbadius and the Kingtone vibes. Both different both amazing.
I'm sure!
That volume knob on the guitar works well for fuzz pedals. Jimi used it a lot, but people on demos don’t seem to do it much with fuzz pedal demos.
+1 for the Retrovibe by Jam pedals. It’s great.
I'm sure it is. JAM makes nice stuff!
^ ^ Its amazing to me that all these years later Jimi Hendrix infuence can still be felt . He invented a completely original way of playing an electric guitar.....the technology was pretty good too! Foxy Love fae Scotland VVxx
Jimi is KING!
Wow! The black cat had a cool Leslie vibe at higher speeds!😳
Yes!
I love the Deja Vibe. It is the best wiggle noise.
It's a great one!
Recently got myself the fulltone deja vibe from the custom shop. Probably won't get better than that
It's a nice one, that's what was here in the video :)
Remember Roger Meyers Hot Rodded Jimi's amps and possibly his Strats .... I think Jimi would have used the original Uni Vibe . He was a genius guitarist - can't be replicated .
Roger Mayer, and I don´t think he modded his amps.
The Best one I have ever heard ( bar none ) is the Shiftee Vibe = thick, chewy, Hypnotic Throb. I own the V-1 Drybell, which is very nice, ( and I believe, it's the best of the 3 ). However, If Vibe was a huge part of my Sound, I'd hunt-down a Shiftee. This was fantastic Mason = " Soooo Stratty "
The Shiftee by Unique Vibe is on the same quality as Sabbadius and other high end builders. I’d say it’s more like Sabbadius 1969 version, which is made to be more like what Gilmour would’ve used. Great vibe!
That company changes the Shiftee to a more Vintage looking unit last I heard, but I couldn’t find one for sale online.
*There was a three year old Reverb post that sold one for $600.
For $600 any of these builders will probably adjust it to sound as close to any other unit you want.
They look cool! Haven't tried one.
sweet tones
Jules rules!
Would love to see a video on unlocking Gilmours Vibe tone. So many videos and forums on chasing the Hendrix vibe tone.
That would be cool!
I believe Gilmour used a univibe on DSOTM, but that’s an MXR phase 90 on Shine on you crazy diamond
He was more of a rotary effect guy
Great playing. Is the pickup switch in the 4th position on Hear My Train Coming? Back in the 60s the Stratocaster had a 3 way switch.
Hendrix is one of the reasons they started using 5 ways. He was one of the players that would jam the switch between positions, creating the 2 and 4 positions
Jules is great! Not sure on the PU position.
Unique-Vibe is built by Jim Klacik and his boutique Vibe will bury all these.. I've owned plenty of Vibes, sold them all because they couldn't get me there.. Got on the waiting list to get the Unique-Vibe and it was about a year wait.. In the meantime Jim was making some Shiftee Vibes and I scored one, lush, throbbing, absolutely beautiful sounding.. Months later I got the Unique-Vibe and it's an exact replica of the originals.. The routing on the pcb is exact to the original Uni-Vibes.. Jim makes the Unique-Vibe to surpass all others, he's an engineer by day and a Vibe builder at home.. Going to score a Gypsy Vibe next and it sounds pretty Dope and the enclosure, color, graphics is cool AF.. The builder claims it has the deepest throb in the Electric Ladyland!! Check out the videos for those three Vibes as well, Unique-Vibe, Shiftee Vibe, and the Gypsy Vibe..
Its 900 bucks ? Not so good !
I've played the Unique Vibe. It's very good, no doubt. I think the Sir Henry to me and Sabbadius are on the level of it with some slight differences. Remember that even unit to unit that you'll find the a Uni Vibe can sound very different one from the next - they weren't particularly consistent unit to unit. The question becomes what do you like - and does one particular vibe exaggerate the features and sounds you prefer from your vibe of choice. Being an engineer won't necessarily help to produce a better design - the original is the standard and by this point is pretty well documented as to how to re-create it 1:1, the most accurate versions wouldn't come down to engineering, but rather who is the best at part sourcing of the original materials.
Lots of fun. Have you tried the new production Shin-Ei stuff? I'd assume that's the most authentic?
Yes, it was designed by the man who now makes the Sir Henry vibe. He build the first 100 or so Shin Ei's and then there were some deviations from the original circuit allegedly and some internal complications with the Shin Ei trademark holder and the designer which led to a parting of ways. I suppose if you can fine a serial number 1-100 Shin Ei, it will be quite good.
Robin Trower uses the FullTone! I know I love mine ! Even my Dunlop Roto Vibe sounds great, and I am usually surprised by the compliments I get at the gigs when I use it with my B rig. Go figure.
Thanks for sharing!
Drybell makes a good one. Pedalboard friendly.
Yes, of the compact versions it's very good!
Drybell vibe machine 2 is my weapon of choice… very adjustable and lush and thick tones for days running through my tubescreamer into a Bogner Goldfinger Superlead mk2 45 watt head.
Glorious actually.
👊🏼🎸
@@smokestackstudiosgem agreed! And I love that the speed knob becomes a ramp up speed knob after plugging in an expression. Such a genius feature.
FYI the Mosky Ch-Vibe is a great univibe style pedal for those on a budget. It is an optical pedal with 4 leds and 4 photocells like it should be. 👍
Thanks for sharing!
Deja Vibe MK2 and Roger Mayers' Voodoo Vibe Plus...both excellent...
Wonderful comparison! What’s the signal chain? I miss it.
Anyway FunkyVibe is amazing man!!
It's stated in the video.
Vintage 1970 Silicon Fuzz Face >> Univibe Style Effect >> Tube Screamer.
I commented because the channel didn't answer your question. They probably didn't want to be helpful.
With the Sabbadius you can turn the pulse off and just use the preamp ala Band of Gypsies.
That’s what Hendrix did a lot. It gave him an extra gain stage, with either amp, Preamp, or Fuzz>Preamp>amp.
I think it was instrumental in the sound he was getting using the BC108 Fuzz Face, going from glassy clean to a very mid humped Fuzz tone.
It's a very cool unit!
I wonder why the Korg Nuvibe doesn't seem to get much love on UA-cam, they even hired the original designer to be on the team! It also has the pedal, true to the original. It is expensive, but some of the pedals here are expensive too!
They're interesting...I like them but not better than some of the others used here.
the korg nuvibe is excellent, it's one of the best vibes on the market. in japan they sell for over $1300 on ebay
me seeing this 2nd version of my fulltone pedal. Eff you!!! I don't want to buy pedal anymore under GAS pressure anymore. Damn, it sucks.
Hang in there :)
Trying to decide between Deja-Vibe, Unicorn, and J Rocket univerb. What do you recommend out of those?
Thanks Mason for the video can you do a shootout with the more compact vibes for those who need real estate on their boards?
Perhaps, what would be your picks?
@@VertexEffectsInc The vibe from Drybell, the on you mentioned today, Dunlop univibe, Vibe Viscous by TC Electronics, jam pedals univibe, JHS Unicorn. Just to name a few.
I have 3 Uni Vibes fulltone Deja Vibe MDV-3 fulltone mini Deja Vibe and Electro Harmonix Good Vibes all 3 are very Authentic all 3 sound incredible...also have a Dunlop Jimi Hendrix band of gypsy's Fuzz face Dunlop Crybaby classic with fassel inductor wah Dunlop MXR Ehoplex Delay that's my set up
👍👍👍
the electro harmonix is really bad as a pedal. it doesn't sound like a univibe at all.
Quick tip guys n gals… adding my TC Helix Phaser to my Drybell Vibe Machine 2 Univibe is fatter and more chewy for a very lush sound.👊🏼🎸
Thanks for sharing!
Try the Drybell Vibe by far the best I've ever used and heard.
No need for overdrive just a little fuzz.
It's great too, among the compact Vibe's it's definitely the best sounding.
Sabbadius all day!
It's a great one!
I prefer vibe before fuzz, but When I want my fuzz to roll of with the guitar knob to clean I go straight into fuzz.
Totally valid!
These are all really good, but I prefer the R. Weaver fx Violet vibe, it stands toe to toe with the best of them and better than most, you wont find better but you will pay more.
Watch our latest Vibe video, it’s used with these same vibes
Never understand why we don't see the Drybell Vibe machine more, in these shootouts. It's a way smaller footprint than so many Univibes, and an authentic Photocell circuit. Sounds amazing too.
It's a great vibe no doubt!
It’s ok. Not amazing IMO
@@PMiller3425 No for sure - it is not amazing.
I would turn up the amp with little dirt for feedback so not to hear pure transiters ? Sir Henry !!!
Rick weaver fx violet vibe rules, I have tried all of them and there's no competition.
Including all those used in this video and compared to a real Uni Vibe?
@@VertexEffectsInc never tried an original but I own or have owned the others except for the black cat or whatever it is. I still have an older dejavibe and a CS dejavibe, a vibe machine v2,and the violet vibe. I kept the dejavibe's because they are more mellow and the vibe machine because it is compact and the violet vibe just has something about it that really cuts through the mix better than any other. Just my opinion. Rweaverfx really has killer customer service too.
Bob Sweet Vibe
You had the sir henry too?
It's difficult to hear the difference without being in the room...personally I have the Deja Vibe and as a Hendrix fan since the 70's I would say it is incredibly authentic sounding and can be dialled to get every variation that Hendrix used. It is also very affordable for such a great unit.
It's a good one!
Thanks for the comparison, guys: To my ears the Sabbadius Funky Vibe is the most authentic one. The Black Cat suits my own preferences for I like it phasey and chimey. Sir Henry is too dark und too "physical"/throbby in my opinion. Deja Vibe is kind of "okayish", nothing more, nothing less.
By the way: The Funky-Vibe is an older one, right? - It's not a 68, 69 or Fillmore East (that's what I happen to own). Does anybody know to which one of the newer models it compares?
Thanks for watching. This one was the '68 I think.
@@VertexEffectsInc Thanks for the answer!
@@Haciendamann sure thing!
I’ve owned several Vibe’s from the original , Deja Vibes, Drybell, Dunlop, Voodoo Lab and the best most Hendrix sounding is the Sabbadius Funky Vibe Fillmore East version…
Some great vibes there :)
Then you obviously haven't tried the Rweaverfx violet vibe because it hits the nail right on the head.
Yes! Sabbadius Fillmore East is the best of all the Sabbadius vibes, which to me are tops.
Lovepedal vibronaut ( the five knob early version ) josh smiths favourite..
I'd love to get my hands on a discontinued stereo vibe from fulltone or black cat...New Vertex pedal? Stereo vibe?!?
There are so many great vibes out there, I'm not sure I could add much to the mix that isn't already been done.
The tc viscous vibe can be made to sound like any vibe using the tone print software.
A digital vibe? Sounds like Hendrix!
Dream on. It can be made to sound like no real UniVibe.
Robin Trower uses the fulltone Deja Vibe MDV-3 Hendrix most likely would also chosen the fulltone Deja Vibe
Who knows???
@@VertexEffectsInc ... He used Roger Mayer uni - vibe ....
Well that was the promise of this video - - which one would Hendrix use, right? Are you ADD? Or just high? Instead the big question is about which lick of Jules did you like... Gimme a break!
man, that guy sure is a tasty player! the tones you guys brought out were all pretty great. the thing that frustrates me is, every vibe video on you tube is just a strat, and it's only hendrix/trower sounds. why not show what can be done with humbuckers? why not show all the other cool ways you can use a vibe? i use vibe all the time, and almost never in a "hendrixian" way. even still, this was a cool video
What about ROGER MEYER .... Voodoo vibe and/or Voodoo vibe jnr....? Fantastic pedals .
Yes! Great pedals!
First off... There is something wrong with the fuzz face or the interface, something, it sounds like crap. On all the vibes. Second, you guys are smart and interesting n all, but there is too much talking. Third, why is there no wah in this? The video is which one would Hendrix use, and Jimi didn't have a Tube Screamer. He used a fuzz, a vibe, and a wah. Fatal flaw. Doh!
Now the good stuff - - love the playing. The Fulltone is only fair. The Sabbadius is celestial in every way. It's 3D. No others come close, though they sound pretty good, especially the Black Cat, it has a very sweet warm tonality. I was impressed by the Sir Henry, I must say. It gets closer to Hendrix and the Sabbadius for that chewy, swirly thing.
Gosh that fuzz just sounds like ass. Every time.
Do this over with a wah, fellas. And a germanium fuzz.
Do you like sabbadius or sir henry more? Does one edge the other out as far as authenticity?
They are both amazing! There is as much variability between these two units as there is between any two vintage UNIVIBES that I’ve ever played
Do the Pedal Pawn Gypsy Vibe!
Thanks for the recommendation!
8:56 sounds very Hendrix to my ears
Thanks to Jules Leyhe they all sound pretty Hendrix :)
Dude! Your playing!!!!!❤
Why would you put the Univibe right with the fuzz before the OD or dist pedals? Wouldnt you put the univibes, delays, reverbs and stuff a lot later in the order, after the od or fuzz? What about the wah pedals?
Typically, if you're thinking of the most famous users, like Hendrix, it was either right after the guitar or after the wah and fuzz.
That's how we typically do it...place modulations, delays and reverbs after the gain stages but you can always experiment. Pedals will react different depending on their position on the signal chain or whether you're playing into a driven amp or not...For example, you always get a more authentic EVH sound using phaser before the drives
Killer tones.....was hoping to hear a 68 by King Tone It's got two separate circuits so you can ramp up or down Seems timewise very comparable
I think it would be a good candidate, but there are many that could go here that we didn't include. Sometimes compromises have to be made, and we were still at a 30 min video.
Is that Bad Cat vibe an older ? 20 y/o or so ? Curious if the new units will sound the same I'm not a big fuzz user so intrigued Thanks Mas
This one is maybe 8 years old, they're made like this still from the manufacturer.
Black Cat went under a few years ago. Sounds really nice but it's only rarely seen. Hello!
Hey Mason, did you get on that PRS HDRX wait list?
Got mine, that amp is 70% of Hendrix tone.
I did not. I have a few original Plexi's
I have an original Prescription Electronics Vibe but lost the power supply..
I know it was 12v but don't know anything past that point.
Anyone can help me find a replacement would be appreciated..
And yes Bob Sweet did have his hand in them as well.
As I recall it's 12V AC or about 18V DC.
One thing I notice about all of these is that unless there's an expression jack on them there's no way to control it with your foot. I know they have those big rubberized knobs which are suppose to do that but I seriously doubt that would work well in a performance setting. I had an original Fulltone DejaVibe 2 in the pedal form which allowed you to be able to control the speed of the phasing but from watching this video I think I liked the sound of the Funky Vibe and the Sr. Henry better of course listening to stuff on UA-cam is always subjective.
I almost never change my speed, but the JHS does have tap temp, or expression jack if you want to add a pedal. Not sure its as lush as some of these though..
I have the black cat and it has an expression out. I love messing with the speed while jamming
They were all great! You can always modify the speed knob as a EXP jack.
@@VertexEffectsInc I had no idea. I should have been an electronics major.
@@BeachJazzMusic there's still time :)
Very cool, but what about wah? Where did Hendrix place wah in the signal chain?
I'm pretty sure wah was first. Because the focus was univibe pedals we kept it close to pedals that would commonly be paired with it. Wah and Vibe weren't so common of a combination.
@@VertexEffectsInc cool! Thanks for replying! I asked because Robin Trower uses univibe first in the chain, then into wah. It made me wonder if Trower stole that from Hendrix. I don’t own a vibe yet, so I don’t know if it needs to be in front of things like a fuzz or if it can go anywhere in the signal chain, like let’s say a phase 90. Cheers!
@@Watergrovey he was certainly influenced by Hendrix no doubt but in many ways did his own thing even with similar gear.
@@VertexEffectsInc Wah and vibe are not commonly together? Ask Trower. Ask SRV. That comment is totally disqualifying. Outta here.
When I got my Mosky Ch-Vibe, I had no idea they were supposed to sound that way with fuzz and od/distortion. I thought maybe something was wrong so I went and watched a Univibe demo and then I really felt dumb 🤣
We've all been there
Why didn't you use the Fulltone CS MDV-MKII it's has better tone, speed and volume.
Jimi's effects in order guitar to the wah pedal to the fuzz face to the uni vibe to the Echoplex
Correct just like we have it.
You forgot the Octavia!!!!
And there is no wah! You are inventing that Mr Vertex, it is NOT in the signal chain in this demo. That is just delusional. It is the fatal flaw in this video.
The Sir Henry is incredible compared to the original. I think the original Shin-Ei sounds the best and nothing has ever touched it. It just does something no other vibe has ever been able to replicate. But, that being said. The Sir Henry seems to be the closet and would definitely be my pick.
Sir Henry is a great vibe, no doubt!
Completely agree, Sir Henry stands out by a wide (very wide) margin. There are obvious reasons why it flies under the radar with the general guitar public. Tinsley Audio is a one man shop, and is sporadically produced in small batches when Dustin isn't on the road as the guitar tech for both Eric Johnson and Kenny Wayne Sheppard. He doesn't advertise and maintains a low profile for his side business (Tinsley Audio). It's price point is higher up on the scale too. Last time I spoke with him he wasn't planning to continue with a waiting list. The new approach would be announcing on Social Media when he has a batch of units available for sale. It's been a few months so I don't know if that's still the plan.
A few other things that might be useful information. If you consider intimate familiarity with the original Shin-Ei Univibe something that might give an edge to a particular pedal maker, I'm hard pressed to think of anyone currently making a Univibe with a richer background. Dustin was the co-founder of the company relaunching Shin-Ei, before severing ties with his business partner (for very valid reasons). Not long afterwards he designed Sir Henry. I can confirm what Mason mentioned, Eric Johnson owned one of Hendrix's Uni's (allegedly used at a well known Pop festival), and he gifted it to Dustin. Not only did Dustin use the Hendrix Shin-Ei Univibe in his design process, but he also uses it in his "OCD" quality-control process. This man takes his focus on quality to the next level.
I don't like getting into conversations about magical parts (even when a case can be made - fluctuations in part tolerance make this a nearly pointless consideration). But like it or not, when it comes to old stock parts the future value of a pedal can come into play. I don't think it's wise to weigh in the prospect of future value when buying modern gear, but just like everyone else I watched what can happen when the right variables are in place (Klon Centaur). I notice some of the same characteristics with Sir Henry. This includes incorporating a part used in the original Shin-Ei unit (photo cell) that fits the "magic part" bill (original old stock, supply nearly gone, and definitely a key ingredient in the sound). None of this matters to me, I can't envision ever selling my Sir Henry. But for those of you pondering what modern pedals have the potential to become highly valuable and sought after 10-20 years from now, you might want to add Sir Henry to your list of suspects.
Not sure if its my headphones perhaps but that fuzz sounded really terrible.. Sounded really thin, maybe because its not germanium or using the zync 9v? Idk. I have the deja vibe but i have been wanting a sir henry based on other videos.... They all sounded great in this video without the fuzz... Just my 2cp.. Be nice to hear it with a ox fuzz or a square face or pedal pawn fuzz.. Thanks for the cool video!!
You can have thick silicon fuzzes, you might not have liked how this particular one sounded...that's ok. There is a ton of variability in vintage fuzzes from unit to unit even among Si and Ge versions. You must use a carbon battery for sure, just as we did here. All those fuzzes are based on a vintage Fuzz Face, so this would be more of the benchmark than the other way around.
I agree the fuzz sounded like crap every time. Maybe sounds better in other set-up, but not in this one!
Thanks for this video. Vibe tones are my favorite but in my rig they come out kind of phase sounding.
Where are they in the signal path?
@@VertexEffectsInc right after fuzz and before overdrive like in the video is where it is now
@@anejo333 some have suggested here to put before Fuzz, however I don't find it to be that authentic sounding either. By their estimation it has to do with the gain of the amp, but Hendrix's amp wasn't that dirty. But, pretending it was, putting the Fuzz first, the vibe, then OD pedal on after the vibe would simulate a broken up amp, so that should work too fairly well.
@@VertexEffectsInc this video really helped. When he played Machine Gun with the tube screamer it was awesome. So maybe playing Hendrix everything doesn't have to be fuzz. Seems simple but I really didn't think anything about it until this video. I agree. Vibe before od sounds good vibe before fuzz gets weird for me. I thought maybe it was my EL84 amp but other people here seem to think the same
I feel like the Deja Vibe lacked warmth, is it a digital pedal?
Nah it's an analog photocell vibe like the others
No, fully analog
Thanks for the video. Which version of the Funky-Vibe were you using?
I think it was the '68
Which funky vibe version did you guys use?
68 I believe
@@VertexEffectsInc There's a big number on the unit, indicating which version it is - even a blind man could see. Another proof that you do not research well for your videos - know your stuff that's rule number one.
woahh, the Sabbadius sounds rich and full but I didnt like it that much with the fuzz.. It sounds better with a transparent Overdrive... I´d like to hear it with the Ultraphonix OD..
Yes!!!
Well done, @Vertex Effects! Thinking out loud, @Matthias Jan Brungers, the Sabbadius (and others) might have sounded clearer ("better?") with the Fuzz Face after. Jimi supposedly ran his FF first in chain, but I'm pretty sure that Trower and many others do not. I love Mason's videos and appreciate his work a great deal. However, I'm convinced that if this test had demo'd all of the Vibes both before and after the FF, several of these vibes would have "gotten along" much better with the fuzz. Several of the vibes "shined" in particular when paired with the Tube Screamer, and I think this is mainly because the gain was running after the vibe in the chain. I know that it would have added more steps/work/editing to an already lengthy video, but wanted to give some constructive criticism for future videos.
My tone is being darkened alit by my mdv-2 deja vibe, does anybody have any pointers? Or is that just what this pedal does? The darkening is extremely noticeable
Have you tried it by itself with a short cable on the output. These old Uni Vibe pedals aren't typically great line drivers. 10K or higher output impedance on many of them. You can try a buffer on the output if you're curious.
@@VertexEffectsInc Thanks for the Info! I think my amp needs a service that may have been effecting the tone because I did notice it get bright but amp has a volume issue right now
Fulltone mdv3
A great pedal, no doubt!
What do you mean by Double Pulse univibes? do you mean its double pulsing the waveform twice like throbbing twice back to back or the LFO has two double pulses back to back because I don't hear any of the univibes double pulsing
More of the throbbing twice back to back, a very 3D quality.
@@VertexEffectsInc What do you mean by throbbing twice back to back, any examples of showing this. To bad you didn't go over this in the new univibe clones video you just did to show which univibe clones do this double pulse univibes because each clone is different.
@@waynegram8907 it's more of a term of art...nothing scientific. It's more about the way the LFO opens up as it reaches the peak of it's rotation and it starts BIG and ends BIG on each rotation creating a "double pulse" effect
@@VertexEffectsInc thanks , so the LFO open up much WIDER only during the positive peak and negative Peak?
R. Weaver Midnight/Violet Vibe!!!
Awesome units. One really can’t go wrong with R Weaver, Sabbadius, Kingtone, Argenziano, and the many other smaller builders making vintage circuits nowadays. They’re all excellent.
@@CorbCorbin totally!!!
I've not tried one, but they look cool!
Best vibe on the market, especially for the price.
LIKED THE BLACK CAT WITH THE TS....HAD A NEWER VIBE TO IT, NO PUN....DIFFERENT..
Mason, make a univibe. For under two hundie. Please.
I love the effect/tone, but I seriously have a mental block that won’t let me pay $400 for one of the good ones, when I only want to mess around with playing the only two songs that I know heavily rely on this effect. // Okay, so now I’m a few minutes into this video and realizing there are more songs than Machine Gun and Bridge of Sighs. So, yeah-I’m really gonna need you to come out with one pretty quickly.
The deja vibe can be found for less than 200 used i got one for 150 used
@@sidween Yes, I’m aware of that. I had previously thought the Fulltones didn’t ‘throb’ deeply enough, but I actually liked how it sounded here. I just don’t really want a Fulltone product. For reasons I’ll not go into here.
What because he was mad about looting 😂. No biggie. People get worked up bout shit
@@UnremarkableMarx No, actually. But, pretty cool of you to tell us all what not to care about. Thanks.
@CentaurusRelax314 - I don't know that it can be done well for under $200. The parts are not cheap, sometimes they need to be custom made to really do well. Some like the JHS Unicorn...I'm sure they can be found used for a reasonable price. Some also like the TC Vicious Vibe and it's very reasonable.
I will ask the question next time: which pedal would Jimi use? WPWJU!
Making bracelets now!
Yeah they don't answer that... The bracelets will have no loop to them, they'll just be a strip...
Got my hand on a Sabbadius ‘69; it’s absolutely beautiful!! and the best pedal I own…. Just sayin’ 🤷♂️
Wow! Great!
❤❤❤❤
❤❤❤❤
My guess would actually be a Phase 100, had he been around long enough to try one
Who knows???
@@VertexEffectsInc that being said, I feel like I could swim in that deja vibe for hours, and I'm a terrible swimmer
