- Monday 4/26/21...day two of a four day Ann Wilson project at Backstage studio in Nashville TN.
We are doing a couple old cover songs. I don’t want to spoil any surprises by mentioning any song names, but one of them is a very famous Univibe masterpiece about a certain “bridge” by a guy who used to be known for playing through Marshall 8x10” cabinets.....
Ann enlisted the help of dear Kenny Wayne Shepherd to come in and play some amazing guitar on this track.
I brought my original Univibe from home today for Kenny to use, but when he showed up at the studio today he had already brought two of his own original Univibes along with him of course....
Kenny is a fine guitar player and a very nice fella....and after he got done playing beautifully on the track, we couldn’t help ourselves from doing that thing that all guitar players just LOVE to do...a little comparison between the three original Univibes that were all sitting there in the studio at the same time....
why? because, well....how many times in life are you gonna have three old Univibes just sitting there waiting to be plugged in??
So...by God we plugged ‘em in... to my old ‘59 tweed 4x10 bassman... and sweet Zack (the studio second engineer) was kind enough to film the proceedings.
Hope you all enjoy this little demonstration of just how different every piece of old gear really is, even if it’s technically the “same” model

My kind of party
Love your pedal demos Man.
The short story in the video description really adds perspective to the video and makes it all so much better knowing the situation not just seeing a moment and not understanding the context. Love ya guts guys keep inspiring us all
Omg I feel so privileged watching this. Coolest stuff I've seen in a while.
the fact that "dear Tom" adds pretty much every time "dear" and "sweet" to the names of his fellow musicians , friends ans so on , indicates the goodness of his soul !
bless you Tom , for that !
That second one had Juice !!!!!!!
My main stratocaster has the initials of my 10-12 favorite guitarists/guitar heroes carved into the body with a soldering iron.😅 These two are both on it. Two of the greatest on the same session 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Load bloooown! KWS is a total badass, Slow Ride was such a killer song of his with the vibe!
Uncle Larry this channel is pure fuckin' gold.
The oldest one has a "chewier" vibe. So killer!
That's full on wah wah, that song
This is like my class, we compare mics, preamps, etc. Good to see it never gets old!
Man what a cool video and a great way to wake up and have your morning coffee to on a day off. KWS, Uncle Larry, 3 original Univibes in one room. How cool is that? Can't wait to hear that track.
Great opportunity to A/B/C a few great vibes. Uncle Larry here has been through more gear than anyone any of us knows. And many of us in town, myself included, now own fantastic pieces of gear that he decided to move. My main Les Paul is still a sweet old no-volute 69 Custom I got from Uncle Larry with the original rectangle case.
KWS - one of my favorite artists! We’ve seen him live 4X!
Kenny is a killer guitar slinger. Univibe heaven there, awesome. Thanks for sharing!
Cool! I'm totally immersed in Uni-Vibe lately. Trying out all different pedals.
Nice to hear different originals and getting the backstory, as well.
Nice work Uncle Larry
I ultimately chose the JHS Unicorn bc of the tap tempo.
Sounds great to.
@@mattjoe1982 I love Josh Scott's vids and have a couple of cool pedals of his including Black Box. I am not always pro tap tempo. Things can be confusing when introducing it. I like tap tempo on my DD-8 but like to limit it to that
So good! KWS & Tom messing with 3 vintage Univibes ! .. wonder what that song could be .. 🤔..😀
Wow, how fun is that! Great sounds out of all of those really.
yes im a gear head - YOUR BOY FROM CLE - love it!
Fun fact ; that old Uni Vibe (the best sounding one) was Hendrix's! So COOL TOM! thanks for sharing these great moments :)
Another fun fact, Kenny is such a badass he had it on his touring board around the Trouble Is record.
Man, wanna throw my Fulltone Deja Vibe in the lake after hearing that old unit!
I saw @kws s post on Instagram. Had no idea he was hanging with Uncle Larry. Very cool!
Sweet! I was waiting for some Machine Gun, Band of Gypsys!
Thanks for the upload!
That is awesome!
Amazing UniVibe demo! The lush, swirling tones take me straight back to the '60s😎✌🏽. Do you find it more effective in a clean or overdriven setting?
I got one of those from the 60’s. Seriously amazing pedal. I treat it like a valuable fragile antique. Got it from a guy who has a studio in his backyard. Would sell but only local - it’s too sweet to destroy by courier, lol.
Man, this is too cool for me Uncle Larry.
First gen Univibe is the one! Almost sounds like my DOD Envelope Filter 440. Those first gen pedals had to be tried because each one had a different sound, the components varied so much from unit to unit. I remember spending hours trying a whole batch of DOD and MXR pedals for the one with the perfect sound.
That was amazing, but I suppose not that surprising for such old components and all the variances of the builds back then.
Tom here, Kenny here welcome to “suck it, That Pedal Show”
Dang... that good one has the 'Machine Gun ' sound. Beauty!
A great lesson in parts tolerances! Very cool!
Amazing.
KWS on the show! That is amazing!!!
Definitely ONLY for...
Any Univibe pedal has its own personality. Like many Fuzz pedals. I still haven’t found the “one” (all mine have NOT been Vintage). Such a quirky effect?
Did not recognize KWS at all...OMG I'm getting old!
Calling Josh Scott... He'll love this.
Very cool
Those are some trippy colors out of those boxes... I’m worried the electrical signals coming out of those unis’ are going to give you guys nut cancer 🤘🤘🤘🤘 rock on!!!
Do they have nut cancer in Serbia?
KWS: "What's crazy though is like it actually sucks some of your tone"
TB: "Oh Lord yeah"
0:56 : < )
I would almost say theres no 2 guitars, amps, or oedals that sound the same. I have a 67 Vox Clyde and an early 68 Arbiter Fuzz Face that both have "the sound". If you look them up on here, theres several that just dont sound right.
Oh my fuck!
i like the modern Mini Vent II when it comes to that Leslie effect, and using an actual Leslie box - but that is a lot of gear to lug around! Univibe is a bit clunky to my ear, low fi!
That's a lot of electric cords and cables!! be safe, don't trip :)
Giving us our gear fix.
These guys need an A/B box BAD
Kenny Wayne
First off. This is cool AF. I mean, c’mon. Out of curiosity, when KWS was talking about “his is true to the originals”, who was he talking about?
Dustin Sears....Shin Ei electronics
I had an original but I sold it to Dave at FoxRox. I kinda regret it, but the signal loss made it pretty unusable.
nice , but i;ll stick to my viscous vibe from tc electronics to get my vibe sound , it's a little less pricey and sounds ok , and it being a digital pedal you can download all kind off presets and tweak it to you're own liking .
I would have been swapping them back and forth until someone turned the lights off....(:
I’m throbbing.....
I bought a Shinei off e bay for $2,000.00 Jumped right into the bidding war and snagged it. They were pissed. Had it re-capped. It sounds like Machine Gun off Band of Gypsy's. Brought it to a gig and the other metal head bands guitarist scoffed "where did you get that, from The Flintstones"? Then I saw the fear in his eyes when I did my sound check.
what do you recap them with? I have one, no idea if the caps are original and if recapping would enhance it
@@barneyrubble8255 classic amplification in Redmond Washington recapped mine the guy is a univibe guru. I don't know what the electrical values are but if you have leaky caps you need to replace them.
I wonder what "Bridge" that could be? Sigh.
Have you ev er been.....
kids in a candy store
Just listen to Uncle Larry for Godsakes ! LOL . I think the record label sent ole KWS to help sell Ann's album not realizing they already have the best session man/guitarist in the business . KWS is good but The Buk is the Cleveland Cleaver ! The Brown Town Sound ! Cuyahoga County Creature of the Strings , The Midnite Guitar Goblin , The Cleveland Beastman ! And IMO one of the BEST .
S
Pfft, they aren’t even true bypass **ducks**
Totally NOT gear nerds 😉
You probably lost 0.0001% of your viewers when you said ONLY for vintage freaks. 😂
No. I watched and took notes with the rest of the class🤘
“Let’s go back to the good one.”
Died laughing.
Uncle Larry, KWS, 3 univibes and a vintage bassman = good times
I like how KWS sits on the floor and messes with stuff like I do. 😂
My band mates give me crap about it.
That's how you learn things about your pedal... You twist knobs!
Definitely got to have the Tweed Bassman aimed right at you to get the Full Monty.
🤣🤣🤣
Yeah yeah yeah, but can you turn the bass UP plz? 🥰
Such a stunning difference ! I love those pedals can't afford an original one but my Deja vibe is doing a good job
How fast did Uncle Larry open the Reverb app to look for an older model after this??
THIS is great stuff!
Dustin Sears knows his Vibe!!!!!🙏🎸🙏🎸
I have owned 2 Univibes in the past & was fortunate to have Bob Sweet, RIP, to have him service & repair them.
Paul Simon played through 8x10 Marshall Cabs? Never knew that.
Hahaaaaaaa
Kenny making a HomeSkoolin debut!!! Sweet!!!
I thought that was Kenny! It's funny, the second he plugged in the oldest one, I thought - Yep that sounds WAY better... Then I thought - Do you just think that because they said it was old??? Then Kenny kept swapping around and it was a no-doubter... Luck of the draw I guess. Thanks again for sharing the nerdery that goes on behind the scenes.
Tom, thanks for taking the time to fill the description with such great detail! Super cool that you documented this rare moment! The variance from pedal to pedal is really eye opening.
The oldest Univibe sounded like Jimi left some DNA in it !!
Indeed!!!! Best comment
Univibe lover here!
Please can I buy your weak, thin, no bottom end, poor audio quality Unibe, Larry?
Cos you know its only about a buck fity in resistors away from being amazeballs.
👍
KWS knows his Uni-Vibes! I got mine for $150 in 1987 when no one cared about old pedals. Kenny is right...they are huge signal suckers. Mine doesn’t go anywhere near as fast as that one on the left, but I never use the fastest setting.
"SECURITY--We got Uncle Larry messing with everyone's Univibes again...what's that? No, only one sounds good....that's what he said."
Saw KWS post the pic of the 3 vibes on Instagram and thought, “ I bet those sound cool. Wish I could hear them.” So I switch over to UA-cam and this is the first video to pop up on my feed. Man, sometimes the planets just align. Thanks for the bts look at the crazy world of guitar nerdery.
Yep!
So, the obvious good one is pretty beat. The other 2 look clean. Odds are pretty high it's been the good one from the day it left the bench, and has been used as a result. On the other hand, electronics age differently with use. Maybe they all sounded great initially, and the passage of time in a closet has negatively affected the lesser 2... $10k of Univibe,, KWS, Little Tommy, Ann Wilson and a Bridge of some sort... that should sound amazing.
Those three thumbs down.. Kemper rigs only for you guys?
That old unit sounds perfect... the pinnacle...
They sounds diferent....its crazy...
Tom, in the manual for my Captain Coconut 2 (which has the best sounding Univibe clone I’ve personally heard), it says:
CENTER - Controls the center of the sweep. You can dial in the exact amount of "off-center" wobble, which is something that makes this effect unique. On the original Uni-Vibe this parameter was available only as a trim pot located on the circuit board. This means that whatever setting it was left on would determine how the vibe sounded. Of course, this setting varied from unit to unit. One might sound bright, one might sound dark, and it was all due to that darned internal adjustment.
Maybe your Univibe can be adjusted via the internal trimmer?
The one on the left was made on a Tuesday
Goodbye Uni Tuesday, who could hang a name on you?
Anyone have an extra CANCEL foot pedal for sale??
This is badass. Thanks Uncle Larry !
A ringside seat as a coupla masters talk Tools of the Trade. Yes, please.
So for all of us.
My thoughts exactly. 😂
Lookin like two big kids in a candy store 😂
For anyone not familiar with a uni-vibe .... they will set you back about $5k (aud) in today’s market
So cool. Looking forward to hearing these tracks. She picked a Bad ass song! Cant wait to see what you guys did with it. Def right up KWS alley. (Not that anything isnt haha) I await its release, until then I sigh.
I thought the second one sounded the best
How are your thumbs Tom. All that description typing had to be murder on your thumbs bro. Thanks Kenny Wayne for being a special guest on vintage gear day in class. And the fact that Uncle Larry has a uni-vibe is not lost on me 😎
2 fav guitarists in the same room👍😊
The TITLE lol. This rules
damn bro u gonna break all the inputs?
Thanks for giving the mear mortals another insight. Jeezus this is great stuff, keep it coming pal. Respect and stay healthy all.
i want that 4 x 10 bassman. best amp ever made.
I own two vintage ones and many clones. Can‘t have enough of them 😅
Oldest Uni Vibe sounded like the sound was colliding with itself, internally . . . . the other 2 didnt
In terms of a career that requires a lot of crawling around on the floor, musicians probably rank second only to carpet installers. But this is way cooler than a retro rug.
