Nicely explained, you didn't lose me like most do. Really interested to see if Stage Manager is going to replace a need for multiple desktops, or if it just diminishes my screen real estate adversely. I'm a BIG fan of the weather app, loved seeing it in iOS 16, will be a super app on the desktop. Super interested in the iPhone as webcam primarily for walking around the house while actively still being broadcast on the desktop. One thing I didn't see w/ Messages is the ability to delete a group of people - I hate going one after the other, clicking Delete each and every time - huge bummer.
Thank you for the wonderful over view. The privacy and security area is different and I cannot figure out how to bypass the password requirement when the mac wakens. Thank you.
Thanks for an informative video WITHOUT the “brought to you by this product you’re never going to buy”. I have an iPhone 14 Pro and an M2 MBP, and I can’t seem to get the camera to do the bit with the desktop but having watched your video, I’ll give it another shot.
I noticed that with the phone as your webcam with the Belkin adapter that whenever you would type, the top-heaviness causes the video to shake vertically quite a lot.
Hi thanks for the informative video. I have just downloaded but when I go into apple email, I cannot search for an old email from an email address, please help, is there any way this is possible please?? tia
Love continuity with iPhone. Use it with Teams and its great. Especially when docking the MacBook. Not sold on stage manager as I find magnet much better.
I like the Stage Manager idea but I hate the fact that the icons take up screen real estate. I like to work in full windows most the time with design and music production apps. On the other hand, I usually use multiple desktops (with the 3 finger up swipe) to group my apps together then quickly 3 finger swipe left or right to switch between them. Do you, or anyone reading this, see any benefits of Stage Manager vs. using multiple desktops? maybe once I use SM I will get a better idea and feel for it.
Multiple desktops for me always, moving between desktops(Spaces) for me give me the feel of using more than one machine (MBP)-- stage manager is off and will be for a long time on my MBP... am glad SM came with an on/off toggle.
You can full screen the apps and the stages will appear on the left if you move the cursor there. This is how I use Photoshop with everything else. Also Dropover and Magnet.
I just bought a new laptop and for me it says "system preferences" do i need to update to the new MacOs? And how? :P It's my first time as a mac user and I'M GETTING CRAZZZZY
Just installed Ventura. And my favorite selection of your tip: the stage manager. So lovely to keep clean desk en fast switching between relevant applications. E.g. when making a movie, then it is so nice switching between iMovie, Finder, and Adobe Photoshop Elements. By the way, Greg, can you explain why Adobe Premiere Elements is so darn slow on my M1 MacbookPro with 16 GB RAM. Photoshop Elemenst performance is reasonable, But I regret bying Premiere Elements. An older version on Windows works on Core i7 PC even faster than iMovie on MacBook. Is there a solution for this performance problem?
I just posted a comment above about using Stage Manager vs. multiple desktops. Do you see any benefit of using SM? Here is my previous comment in case you can't see it or it's pushed down in the comments. "I like the Stage Manager idea but I hate the fact that the icons take up screen real estate. @@timetravelvictim sometimes I also use multiple displays. But without stage manager if I have open three to four apps on top of each other is less easy. My MacBook is 16” so enough room.
Stage manager, Spaces, Mission Control, the lousy move left move right tile, and half a&&ed full screen are just HORRIBLE non solutions. Spectacle and Rectangle are just as clueless. Tiling windows is the one thing Windows 7 got right. Tile all windows, cascade, minimize, show desktop, task bar groups shortcuts and the windows open for that, and UNDO! Years of Mac torture and window management in it is crap.
this camera feature i am using for almost two year on windows with iriun and some different apps it is also available in linux versions so i dont know what the hype is all about
Installed after work today. Seem to download and install really quickly. No issues so far. And BTW, I had to rename my iPhone 14 Pro because the name carried over from my previous phone.
Is there a way to make stage manager active only on one desktop? I like to keep my main display normal for my creative work but the other display that I use for content could benefit from stage manager.
Hey Greg, do you know if the clock app syncs between the iPhone and your Mac? For example, if you start a timer on your iPhone, but then sit down to use your mac, is that timer syncing through iCloud? Or are they completely separate? Great video, thanks man!
Can you edit text with the keyboard at the same time you are using dication? i am a student and use dictation for my notes a lot, and it would be really useful if I can quickly edit mistakes the dictation software makes and then just keep speaking
Well, I just tried this myself and the moment you start typing, dictation turns off - so yes, you can edit whilst dictating, but then you'll need to turn it on after each edit. It may be best practice to dictate the whole lot, then edit later...
Could anyone tell me if we can make MacBook read time out loud like on previous OS. I really like that coz it is so easy to lose track of time when you are busy or too focus. Thank you in advance
Stage Manager for MacOS, sorry but MacOS already has multiple desktops and I mainly use keyboard to switch apps anyway so I feel this may be a feature that will not get a lot of traction, especially since it takes up real estate on left side of monitor
Unlike many OS upgrades there's actually a lot of features in this release i am keen to try and will upgrade as soon as the first bug fix is out. (Because the first rule of software is never install the dot zero release)
Don't forget to mention that if the receiver of messages isn't on the latest OS version, they will see any messages immediately and edits (I believe) will come in after the original is delivered. Kinda useless, but it's a start.
Does anyone know if ipad pro m1 supports fullscreen with external monitor? I've tried connecting with usb c cable and bluetooth mouse, but it only show same screen as ipad
Full screen with the M1 iPad Pro was removed from the update. It was pulled by Apple during the beta to focus on stage manager. Apple stated it would be added back in a future update later this year.
@@suzannemariemuldoon Thanks. I figured it out, you have to have wifi on even if you're desktop is getting internet over ethernet. Both wifi and bluetooth have to be on both devices to work..
Feels like a really lackluster release of macOS.. Stage Manager is just another iteration of the dock, and the dock is better IMO - the iPhone camera as a webcam and Stage Manager feel just gimmicky and unnecessary. The rest are features that should have been in macOS since the beginning anyways with some minor quality upgrades to other features.
@John Bates I mean, a 48MP iPhone 14 camera used as the Mac webcam with Continuity Camera will look better than even the best laptop cameras considering its size to let more light in and by just being the best phone camera of the competition
I am really not a fan of the new system settings look. I think that design is much better suited for the iPhone/iPad. System preferences should’ve stayed for Mac OS as a stand-alone user interface.
The continuity camera is awesome...if it works...:/ Mine gave up after few times of use and I cannot bring it back... Update: I found a solution...and it's the dumbest reason ever. In order for the camera to work, the iphone needs to be: - standing still in landscape mode. - Screen is turned off. - Device is locked.
Instead of using an iPhone magsafe mount get a bendable tripod or stand that can be grabbed from a dollar store, i think it may be a bit dangerous to place the iPhone on top of the screen, since it may damage it :V
