1) if you have multiple apps the auto alignments doesn't work according to the left/right window size, it just centers and you have to re align first app to the screen again each time. Browser 65% and all apps 35% is my usual go to. In windows this just works. win+left automatically adjusts according to remaining space on the screen unlike mac and it was a solved problem tbh. unnecessary re-inventing doesn't always work. 2) Also the win+l for windows lock is so much easier to remember and use while standing near the desk than ctr+com+q
0:33 fun fact: it took Apple so long to implement window tiling because Microsoft patented the concept of a "Method for providing window snap control for a split screen computer program GUI", and that patent only expired this year. Apps like Rectangle were able to provide it because functionality from external software to an operating system wasn't bound to the patent (also why Linux desktops could get away with it, since their desktop managers work as non-OS specific external software).
@@Mr.Marbles they just decided the risk of having to argue a case that would ultimately settle out of court wasn't worth it. Their users didn't need the feature that much. And honestly I don't think they were wrong. But it's a silly argument to put forward as a fun fact.

Great video! Double-clicking the title bar to minimize has been an option in macOS for a while - I’ve been using it for years! Great solution for minimizing windows quickly.
oh my god thank you so much quinn, i used to use the accesibility zoom tool to make sure the iPhone mirroring window isn't tiny, had no idea that you can hit command+ to make it bigger, thank you so much
Gotta admit, I thought they were gonna be more basic tricks, but some of these are pretty awesome. I will share about the background sounds with my dad, as he loves rain while working
Amazing review as usual Quinn. A couple of details: background noise was available already on Sonoma, as well as low power mode. But indeed many things were improved and I'm looking forward for better experience !
5:45 - It's not that a Finder window "gets shrinky and small", it's that it enlarges _or_ shrinks to fit the content. If you have an empty window, it will shrink, if you have a window full of documents, it will enlarge. If it's an auto-sort view, it will only grow vertically, filling the full screen height like it does in other apps if there are too many icons. But if you're in a folder that isn't auto-sorted, it will grow or shrink both horizontally and vertically (as appropriate for each) to fit all the icons.
I've been sending feedback for Apple to put Background Sounds in Control Centre for over a year. This is how I find out they finally did. I also didn't get a notification that they resolved any of my feedback items. Thanks Apple 👍🏻

ok, that trick to remap the window tiling shortcuts is sweet! I still prefer a window tiling mgr with a cycling feature, like Raycast/Rectangle/etc. but will remap the arrange controls for sure.
The new animations for Cleanmymac startup are nice!!!!! Hey, is it possible you will compare Alfred to Raycast sometime? Nice set of tips, which makes me feel snazzy.
4:55 I'd strongly recommend using full path to the specific option you create shortcut for. Some applications (like for example VSCode) have options with same name and in that cases MacOS triggers them instead of system ones. One tricky thing with that is how to specify full path (at least for me it was tricky). Basically, you need to use '->' in between menu/submenu names (i.e. Menu->Sub Menu->Item), just be careful, you can't add spaces between '->' and menu/item name or the whole path will be incorrect. In case of shortcut from the video, you should pass 'Window->Move & Resize->Top Left'. Hope someone finds it helpful as I spent a good hour looking for solution on how to set it up a few weeks ago 😉
About opening the context menu from the keyboard: Control + Enter works e.g. in Finder only if a file is selected. But you don't get the context menu if no file is selected. This can be done using fn + VolUp (which sends F12 in reality). This works in all applications, also in the UA-cam comment editor where Control + Enter would publish the comment. F12 must be activated in Accessibility => Pointer Control => Alternate pointer actions and there you can assign a button for the right click.
Thank you so much for the way to rebind the window tiling! I am using a external 3rd party keyboard which has no globe key and couldn't use them until now!
For snapping, I think the default mapping is worth keeping. It's just the two left-most keys and then shift added in for more complex actions. Better to keep it as is and then be able to quickly use any Mac instead of having the overhead of a custom setup that also may break in the future if Apple changes hotkey requirements.
I love these videos, Quinn. Always learning new stuff. One thing I've come back to is Mac icon customization. I was surprised to see that for built-in apps (like Music), is no longer possible to replace them easily...???? WTH... Do you know of any apps that do that these days? Like Candybar type of thing... Ohhh the good old times...
Can't wait to update my 2019 Intel Macbook and find out just how much of these came to my aging machine! (Didnt update yet since I work on this, and I'm always afraid of new softwares on launch)
5:31 The reason Finder & Safari windows behave differently when double-clicking their titles is that Zoom on the Mac means "fit to contents." Web pages are documents of effectively infinite length, so Safari fills the vertical space. But switch ti Icon view in Finder and add some icons, and the window should expand to fit all of them. Like the Stationary Pad tip I have a while back, this comes from the Classic days when screens were smaller & maximizing a windowed UI was inefficient for drag & drop.

This was amazing! Would love a version for iOS, though I know things are more locked down and there probably aren’t as many tricks Also kinda vibing the new set
Thanks great tips! You don't have to create a shortcut for resizing the windows. It's already baked in. it's Function + Control + the arrow keys on the right side of the keyboard you want to move the window.
Little note on setting new hotkeys: Sometimes you need to be more specific (for instance if several things have the same name), and then you can write things like: *_Window->Move & Resize->Top Left_* Notice no spaces between menu levels! However, these hotkeys are hard/impossible to backup (trying to use plist files has been really flaky for me). So if you have a fresh install or a new Mac, you have to add them all over again. This is a reason to use Keyboard Maestro instead for this task. But this has a different con: It doesn’t update the hotkey legends in the menus - so pick your poison. 🤷🏻♂️
New tiling window manager for macOS is called Aerospace and it doesn't require disabling SIP partially like Yabai requires. It's beta and it has bugs but it's quite useable and I've been daily driving it for a couple of weeks.
7:34 the fact that Apple introduced the option to not have to authenticate every single time you want to mirror your iPhone makes me hopeful they’ll bring back the ability to not have to authenticate every single time you want to sync your iPhone to your Mac. It used to be so easy and reliable: set up your iPhone to backup to you Mac, set it to do it automatically, allow it when connected by WiFi, and basically every time I put my iPhone on the charger at home it would update my backup. Now, it won’t back up until I type in my passcode, which in practice means it actually backs up every couple weeks or less because I usually don’t look at my phone after I put it on the charger, so I don’t even see the request to authenticate.
El gabacho! 🤙🏽 great video, I definitely didn’t know a few of those. Quick question on a different topic. How’s the titanium Milanese loop? And also, did you also get the series 10 in titanium, if so, how does it look with the new band?
