I foolishly posted a video with a nice wallpaper and didn't link to it! It's from a paid pack from Bram D Media bramdmedia.com/products/abstract-patterns-wallpaper-pack-v3
The smallest dash is a hyphen that is used for compound words and hyphenation in paragraphs. The second dash is called an en-dash and basically replaces the word "to" or "from" when using dates or times such as 7:30-8:00, Dec-Jan, 1960-1990. The longest dash is called the em-dash and is a pause in the reading of text to create emphasis or drama in a similar way that one might use an ellipsis (…), a set of commas, or parentheses. It is also used to create an aside in text, such as "He was living-as it turns out-a serious life of crime."
These en’s and em’s are from the Printing / Compositing world, an en is half the size of an em. Being a retired Compisitor I really miss the old Print days at work 😊
@@michaelspinetto7569 Relative to the particular font being used, an en-dash is the width of the letter "n" and an em-dash is the width of the letter "m". The en-dash s not half the size of the em dash, but more like 2/3rds the size of it.
Normally opt- would type out special characters like ç. I don't really need those, so I created a custom Mac input option that clears out all default opt- shortcuts so I can remap them in Raycast. For example, opt-N opens up my notes. It's really convenient to not think about which combination of finger gymnastics is still unoccupied and instead just use opt for all my shortcuts.
If you can't remember all those letters triggered with alt: put the input menu in the menu bar (activate it in System settings > Keyboard > Input sources). Then select the Keyboard Viewer in that menu. Now if you hold alt or alt+shift with the Viewer open it wll show you all the special characters. Accent keys are highlighted and when you type one of those all characters that you may use that accent on will be highlighted as well. So no problem if you forgot how to type e.g. the Spanish ñ.
Great video lol, I love these; I either learn something new I should have been using forever, or I am reminded of one (or many more) that I will definitely continue using now because I forgot about them! Thanks
It's one of the best shortcut videos I've seen. One suggestion: It would be fantastic if you could show the keys in the video, especially for people like me who are new to Mac. Thank you for the beautiful video
Awesome video I knew a few of these, but learnt a few new ones including the Option-Cmd-I (4:55) in Finder! 🙂 The euro symbol though (8:24) is actually Option-Shift-2 (€).
I had forgotten so many. Over the years, I became reliant on the mouse and click. My shortcut repertoire shrunk to copy/paste. I’m on a mission to use more shortcuts now.
One of the most interesting videos I’ve seen pertaining to Apple. I’ve used my Mac the same way I’ve always used it and never looked at more efficient ways to do things, just the Option / Expand is worth knowing. Makes a refreshing change from the barrage of 10, 20, 50 things you should do with your X device that show up in my feed daily!
Wowww. This was extremely helpful . Thanks a lot for sharing. I have a request for a future video, how to keep the dock clean. When i am multitasking on a project and parallely opened 5 apps i am working in, the dock gets fully messed up. Is there a way in DOCK to not show opened apps in DOCK ? Please do help on this.
£ is Option and 3 -- for whatever reason the number 3 -- note that a hashtag (on the number 3 on the keyboard) is called a pound. Quite witty ;) Very helpful and fin tips. Thanks for sharing.

Remember to empty the trash? Automate cleaning out the trash or set a reminder to go off as often as you want or have an app like hazel watch the trash and remind you to empty the trash when it exceeds the limit you set.
I use the option key frequently to access my 5 music libraries. I have a separate library for each iPod because each only holds so much music. I limit each to 128 GB because my car won't allow a larger input than that. Hold the option key down and keep holding until it says: "open an existing library or create a new library."
It would’ve been helpful to the viewers if you pulled up the virtual keyboard And then showed them what happens when you pushed option. All the keys changed on the virtual keyboard revealing all the functions.
Omfg. 🙀. lol 😝. How the hector am I supposed to remember all that??? I so luv all of these things but I’ve never been able to remember them. Aaarrrggghhh.
When the M1 came out, I got my first ever Macbook. As a lifetime Windows user, I hated the four keys in the bottom left instead of the 3 on windows. Years later, I still hate it. I've spent so much time figuring out how to remap my keyboard to act like windows. Surely I cannot be the only person that hates the layout/hotkey difference.
I guess I got used to the shortcuts in macOS much more easily because I never used most Ctrl shortcuts in Windows, due to the physical awkwardness. Now I maintain a project (Toshy) that allows the use of Mac-style shortcuts in Linux, because I can’t stand the Windows/Linux style shortcuts and find the Mac-style shortcuts far more intuitive and easy to get to. 😂 I don’t know of any easy way to do the reverse in macOS. That must be tough.
Very cool. I knew some, but not all. So, thank you very much! It would be great if there was just one cheat sheet that listed every single key combination. If anyone knows if and where it is, can you please share a link in the comments? Thank you! 🕊️🫶

Bravo!
Thank you for your insightful, eye-opening comment. I suspected something around these dashes but was never sure. TY!

I love videos like this. I usually only retain one or two tips, but I try to watch as many as I can so they gradually accumulate.

Learned more about Mac in 12 mins than I ever knew, and given my last experience with Mac was early 90's, definitely helpful in moving back to it!
Thank you! Thumbs up for the Maximise window tip alone - this has been driving me nuts for years 😂
This might be the video of the year! Amazing tips!
Great tips! I’ve been using a Mac for so long, yet I never knew about this. Thanks so much! 😊
Lots of goodies in this video. Thanks for sharing!
Hooray!! What a GREAT vid and so helpful. Finally i found the right adjustment for my eyes on the brightness!! You're the best ! 💖

p.s., - is a dash. - is an en-dash. - is an em-dash.
Dashing.
Nearly right, the first one [-] is not a dash, it is a hyphen.
Use dashes for hyphenating words. Use en-dashes for number ranges like 5-7. Use em-dashes to separate text-like this-if you need it :)
@@zach-shea You do not use a 'dash' for hyphenating words (the clue is in the verb). You use a hyphen.
@@alangeorgebarstow They are the same character

Great job on this video! Love it!!! This is super helpful!
Excellent video, even I, as a Mac user of more years than I care to mention, learnt things I didn’t know, subscribed!!
Thank you for making this video, I personally have never delved into the Option key
such a great video but maybe a document of all these would be great as well!
I’ve worked with Mac OS (and predecessors) since 1989, but I’ve still learned a few tricks! And this video had some interesting malaphores :)
I had forgotten so many. Over the years, I became reliant on the mouse and click. My shortcut repertoire shrunk to copy/paste. I’m on a mission to use more shortcuts now.
Thank you very much lots of excellent tips, George😀

A fabulous video … so helpful …. thank you for sharing …
We need more keyboard shortcuts! My high school students don’t know any of them! This video alone is sub-worthy 👍😊 subbed!
Goddamn, only after 24 years of Mac do I learn some of these shortcuts. Thank you!!!
Thanks for this very useful info!
thank you for the video, several of those will be helpful to me!😊
Excellent video! Thanks👍🏽
Thank you, very helpful
hehehehe, love the F1 Calendar right there. Great video, brother.
Thanks for the video. Learnt something new.
Thank you.
hey what was the app you were using when you were showing the typing option tricks at 6:17 Thanks

At 4:37 you said Apple keyboards have a log out button. I didn't know this. can you tell me more about this?
Nice!! Very helpful video!! Thanks!

That explains the logic. Now easier to remember.

Good stuff!

Hi! Some really good tips! On Question: how did you get the black WorkSpaces bar on the left? I haven’t seen that before. Thanks so much!
What software do you use to screen record? I like the smooth cursor animations
Need more like this

Do you have something similar for the Magic Keyboard on the iPad?
learned a lot. thanks
Great Video. Thanks 💷 Pounds is not Euros. It's Great Britain.
3:42, is there any way to do smaller increment volume control on iPhone or iPad?
Better as always

the Command + Option + P to show system print does not work in Arc, anyone knows an alternative keyboard shortcut?? Or anyway I can set up one?
Thanks
Great!
How do I insert the date in notes?
There is NO WAY to remember all the stuff that you just showed. I hope I can do it (with the help of the Option key on my own).

I thought… - hyphen; - “n“ dash (option hyphen); - “m“ dash (option+shift hyphen).
Wow helpful
I liked it.
CAN'T option click wi-fi to get REAL IP address? too bad
(That's INTERNAL IP u got)
So u saw that your serial number is more important to hide than your IP address ?
Em-dash, the longest, is British.

You either “scratch the surface “
Or
“it’s the tip of the iceberg “
