The NeverEnding Story III: Escape from Fantasia (also known as: The NeverEnding Story III: Return to Fantasia) is a 1994 fantasy-adventure film. It is the third and final film in the franchise. It stars Jason James Richter as Bastian Balthazar Bux, and Jack Black in an early role as school bully Slip. This film primarily used the characters from Michael Ende's novel The Neverending Story (1979), with the exception of Atreyu, who is absent from the film, and introduced a new storyline.

As a Jack Black fan, I'm proud of him for being the only one in this film who actually tried.

Michael Ende HATED the first one so bad, he sued the director. If he had lived long enough to see this, he would've charged them for murder
Well, then. Here's an oof for you. Ende passed away in 1995. If he was aware of it, he was alive long enough to see the final nail on the coffin of his work.
@@Remememea actually it was only available in Germany(the home country of Michael Ende) while he was alive it wasn’t released in the USA until after Ende died, but he was undergoing treatment for his stomach cancer at the time which unfortunately lead to his death in August of 1995. I imagine if he was aware of this films existence his cancer was more likely on his mind and enjoying what life he had left.

I don’t understand why he hated the movie it does a decent job as and adaption for the first part of the book I enjoy the film as I enjoy the book, the book is a masterpiece imo

the 'born to be wild' in this terrible sequel is a bastardized version of an enjoyable classic rock track.

I'll give the movie this: the Nasties have more of a motive than the bullies in Garbage Pail Kids. The Nasties targeted Bastian because he got them expelled. Juice and his gang just had nothing better to do than harass a 12-year-old kid.

I think it's more to do with The Nasties and their influence on holding the book.. Since they're causing chaos in the outworld, Fantasia gets caught in the mix and their influence has bent their world into a variation of what The Nasties have.
Geez, the Critic was about as upset about this movie as the author of the original book was upset about the original movie. No, really. Look it up. He tried to stop production halfway through because they deviated from his story. Then he tried to sue the production company and studio and lost.
The only Thing they really fucked up un the first movie is the ending.
The original script of the film actually wasn't as bad: Falkor was still somewhat smart, Atreyu was in it and his personality was more or less the same as in the first two films, and the Childlike Empress actually gave bAstian a real reason why he couldn't just wish the lost Fantasians in the new Fantasia: the Auryn couldn't teleport multiple beings while in separate locations...
The author, while definitely understandable, sounds a bit crazy. If it took a lawsuit to make a movie more faithful to source material, a lot would be different in entertainment today.
That's kind of sad....

Why did they drastically change the characters appearances and personalities? Did they just lose the rights to the old Falcor and Rock Biter or was it just a new, stupid director?

Alisha Dee Just zero love and care for the original. Clearly the changes were made because Hollywood executives thought that's what the kids back then wanted to see.
If only the original could be rebooted with as much love and care as the original (And of course no CGI models)....
Alisha Dee Well, for sure, you guys might be on to something but here are a few more reasons why they defiled the characters:
for 1-the writers and directors were different and they chose to make the Neverending Story more kid-oriented hence the new goofy-personality of the charaters.
2-The first film was an adaptation of a German book. The source was almost completely abandonned for this movie.
3-It was the heydays for 90's MTV in popularity and influence, that flick feels like an MTV series' episode aimed at teens. The producers tried to capitalize on that popularity emulating that "style" with this disgrace of a movie.
4-Finally, it prefigures the animated series which first aired in 1995 and was closer to the 3rd film than the source material or the 1st one for that matter.

This is in serious contention for my all-time favorite Nostalgia Critic episode.

Watching these old nostalgia critic episodes makes me, well nostalgic. These helped me with so much loneliness during high school and he may not be the same nowadays but I still respect him for giving me this content that I think still very much holds up for me now

I'd actually like to see the second half of the first book where Baston goes mad with power and Atreyu has to defeat his former best friend and in an ironic twist, Baston is left with no imagination or memory of his own cause he used it all up imagining all new constructs and army.

Actually, I have a headcanon about this movie: the changes to all the characters are BECAUSE the villains are screwing with the book. By doing...whatever it is they're doing back on Earth, they're basically fucking up the character portrayals in Fantasia. I mean, it doesn't explain the real-world portions at the beginning, but hey, it's _something_, and quite frankly it's more than the screenwriters gave us.
It's simpler than that. The characters in this movie take their appearances from the short-lived HBO cartoon.

In fact, that was the actual reasoning behind the style of this movie-

On a plus point: Getting the guy who did the voice for the Honey Monster in the Sugar Puffs adverts to sing Born to be Wild in his Honey Monster voice is a masterstroke.

Fun fact, not only are the rockbiters all played by different people, but the guy who voiced the rock kid also played Leo in the og live action Ninja Turtles movie.
the nasty, urgh...seriously, if the first was "nothing", the second "empty", who was the moron who missed the chance of making "the void" or "the hollow"? its perfect! Something bigger than those both antagonists, but with the same theme, as if the idea of nothingness was something increasingly worse.

The fun thing is... Dough Walker's reaction to Neverending Story 3 was exactly my reaction when seeing Neverending Story 1(!!!) when it came out (after reading the book). Yes, compared to the book part 1 is that bad. Now... imagine my reaction when seeing part 3. All of sudden I wished it was at least a little like part 1.

You mean Moonchild is the English translation of the original German name from the book.
My first introduction to the story was the Finnish translation of the book. In it, the name Bastian gives the empress is Kuuntytär, Moon's daughter. I've always wondered which translation was closer to the original German name, child or daughter.

There is a better alternate version of Neverending Story in one Donald Duck pocket comic were Donald finds the book and reads it. The story goes that the world is being threatened by iconic Disney villains and it's up to Mickey Mouse to save the day. It had a really twisted ending.
I’m 18 and a fan of the first Neverending Story and trying to write a screenplay for the Neverending Story 4 and once it’s done It will be an actual faithful sequel to the first film (the one thing that II or III failed to be)

the 2nd one was................decent for me, nothing great, good, or neverending story 3 levels of bad but it was ok, the first one will always be a classic

I like to theorise that the changes to the characters and environments in Fantasia are due to their tampering that could actually explain the changes very well

A little part of me hates Doug for bringing this movie to my attention. I could have lived in blissful ignorance and retained a shred of magic from my childhood. But no, it just wasn't to be. Why Jack Black, why...?
+Ciaran Maher Now you know how those of us who actually watched this movie when it came out felt. I didn't have Doug to bring it to my attention, I was such a big fan of Neverending Story, I watched it on my own, pre-internet land, not knowing the horror I was heading into.

@@wilfur3077 I mean they completely abandoned the preexisting lore to haphazardly throw in new mechanics that fundamentally break the world in order to serve the convenience of the characters' situations. They also swindled the dignity and beloved traits away from characters that were made icons by their presence in the original film(s). Basically, TNES3 panned out kind of like this:
- Falcor is portrayed as being a blithering idiot rather than the optimistic and wise Falcor of the original. This is comparable to Luke Skywalker being portrayed as a cowardly grump who almost killed his own nephew just because he sensed darkness inside him rather than the brave Jedi Master Luke of the OT who risked life and limb to save his father although Anakin was already a genocidal, deadly Sith.
- The ability to make wishes on command raises the question of "Why doesn't Bastion just wish himself every device possible to save himself and Fantasia?" Bastion holding back on this power inhibits TNES3 from creating any interesting scenarios, challenges or character developments with its own material. This is comparable to Holdo choosing not to simply tell Poe and his crew the plan to escape the First Order, a "gotcha" moment which inhibits TLJ from having any coherency in its plot or doing anything to provide impactful delineations for its own characters.
All in all, TNES3 feels like a movie that got Rian Johnsoned hard.

They're not. This movie killed the franchise. No remake either. They attempted to fix it with Tales from the Neverending Story in 2001 but after one season, nothing had changed. So the scrapped the plans for Season 2. Then in 2014 plans for a remake came along and those were scrapped because of the backlash from The Neverending Story III and feared that the remake would be worse than 3 and in some opinions of others 2 as well. So there is no plans for anymore films at all period
