When Zep came to Australia in 1972. I was a spotty faced 13 year old school boy. Their Sydney concert was held on a school day so, I "jigged' school and had to sneak into the show grounds and, see them live. What a show and, to add to the thrill? I saw myself in the audience in the footage on the Led Zepplin anthology DVD.

Hammer of the Gods.......... In my opinion..."In My Time of Dying" is Mr.Bonham's best work......Neil Peart and such are technical masters....but John just had that extra groove you are born with. You can practice a life time as I did....but ya just aint got dat feeling of Bonzo..... Peace!

Effing amazing - recorded between Sept 25th - Oct 3rd, 1968. Released Jan 1969 - people couldn't believe what they were hearing when it came out of their speakers. Bonham finally found a band where he could express himself. It shows. Led Zeppelin just jammed their asses off and no one was trying to restrict anyone's talent -- no one was jealous of the other. They had respect for each other and went to the out stratosphere ! ❤
Exactly happened to me. 1969. Went to the record store. Everybody talking about it. Got it home. Little puff of something good. The first side, my reaction? "Gack!! What the hell is this?" Flipped it over. Side two. Organ intro, "Okay! This sh*t is for real." And the side ended with "that!" I never did recover from it. I enjoy it now, still an album I play, start to finish. Still love it like it's my best friend.

Loose and lose are two different words
For all intents and purposes KIDS played that. This is my favorite song from 1 and in my top 5 Zep jams. IMO the reason Page chose this to close the album is because it's like a gut check as they're going out the door. Like he's saying "This isn't the end, it's just the beginning. We'll be back shortly..."
I also like how Page plays a piece of Beck's Bolero in the middle as if to say "Just in case you were wondering who was at the helm on that". Heads must've exploded in those days after hearing this. Definitely a turning point in popular music.
@Andrew - John Bonham and Robert Plant were both in a group before LZ called Band of Joy and "How Many More Times" was a regular of theirs, that's why it sounds so tight.
You are so right about how this album was received. Someone told someone "You just got to hear this album, man" And when we did our minds were well and truly blown! Yep, the jazz was strong in this one.
I’m 15 years old at the time, bought the LP at Lorraine’s Records at Winston Plaza. 5-6 of us sat on the basement floor in a circle around a record player. We were all hearing this album for the first time. Nothing like the first time, right? And that started my journey. Dinner with the family was never quite the same again. Life changed.
Jazz, funk, blues riffs, Bonham unleashed......A lot to digest on this one.
IMHO, THIS is the quintessential Led Zeppelin song. More so than Stairway to Heaven, When the Levee Breaks, Whole Lotta Luv, Out on the Tiles, Dazed and Confused, etc. As great as those and more are, this one captures the essence completely. The last song on their first and greatest album must have blown people away when they heard it for the first time, as it does hearing for the 10,000th.

Bonzo's mates had so much respect for what he added to their sound, they made a point of opening the album with Good Time Bad Times & closed it with How Many More Times. Just an incredible first album...
I can't get enough of watching people discover Zep. My face did the same things all those years ago. They were so talented and effortlessly cool. They did so little promotion I never heard Plant speak until we saw them for the first time. I thought no way is his voice the same as on the albums. Of course it was.
That shuffle going into The Hunter is just glorious. And he was 20, I believe... Great, great feel....There's nothing like early Zep, really. Blues, jazz, blood, thunder and the Hammer of the Gods.

What's amazing about most Zeppelin songs, is you listen to one, and even though it will be 6 minutes or 8 minutes, it doesn't feel like that much time has passed. You get so caught up in everything that time becomes irrelevant.

Great to see you going through the Zep catalogue from the start. Early doors a lot of us Zep fans gave you some stick for not knowing Bonham's work being a drum teacher and all. Apologies. We get very precious. But once you got into it......we knew it would truly hit you where you live. The symmetry of these four guys, just like The Beatles, is unmatched, untouchable.

"How Many More Times" is based on some old blues songs that influenced the band. Some of the lyrics are from blues singer Albert King's song "The Hunter," and much of the song was derived from Howlin' Wolf's "How Many More Years." Some other Led Zeppelin reworkings of blues songs include "You Shook Me" and "The Lemon Song."

I wore new grooves in that album when I was 10 years old. My oldest sister had a great collection and Zep was at the top! Bonham is GOD!
When you mention Miles Davis in the same breath as Led Zep, you're putting my two favorites from each genre together. That warms my heart. Saw Miles live in the late 1980's at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in upstate NY. For me, Miles is to jazz as Zep is to rock...the pinnacle.

Bonzo is crazy! This is one of his best in my uneducated drum brain. It just felt great all the way through. The transitive moments, however simple, are so mysterious and engaging.
There’s another great live version of this song from the Royal Albert Hall in 1970 for Jimmy’s birthday. Talk about improv! Looking for to you tackling Zeppelin II someday. Cheers.

Andy, it was great to experience this whole album with you as you listened for the first time. Bravo!!! To watch you react to these classic rock songs for the first time and your authentic response, including ground-breaking Communication Breakdown, is priceless!! Stank face and all!!! LOL! Bonzo is really slinging and swinging that Slingerland Kit! :) ALL AT THE RIPE OL' AGE OF 20!!! (He did not turn 21 until the end of May 1969 and this album was recorded in 36 hours in October of 1968, only 6-7 weeks after they formed in August 1968, as the New Yardbirds). (It was filmed 2 months after this album came out in Jan. 1969 and filmed the same month as your reaction to live Dazed and Confused from Supershow). This riff is forever fixed in my mind. I first heard the album two days after it was released and was transfixed by Bonham (and the rest of the Band did okay too!). I thought it could never be bettered and then came Led Zep Two!!! The power of the Bonham bass drum playing is unique and drives everything along....outstanding.
A couple of friends and I had heard about LZ in early to mid-1969. Then we heard a few cuts from that first album. So when The Forum in Inglewood, CA announced their fall concert season, we bought it all: Ten Years After, Led Zeppelin, The Who, and The Moodie Blues. They were all great, but the Led Zeppelin concert blew the lid off everything that preceded it. We could see people in the audience looking at each other in absolute awe! Yes there were great bands of the era and I loved most of them. Some are still great today. But when we heard Led Zeppelin playing everything from that first album, we were numbed by what we just heard. Our brains were in another solar system. AND THEY WERE ALL SO YOUNG!!! HOW COULD ANYONE BE THAT GREAT AND SO YOUNG?!?!?!?!

Man, up to that point in my short Led Zepp experience, i was in mesmerized awe of Jimmy Page's Godly guitar licks! I'd noticed the great *Drumming, Bass & of course Robert Plant's (Where/what Planet did that guy come from?!!)👀!!!
Then I heard How Many... 🤯 The DRUMS MAN Those F'ing Beautiful DRUMS! From then on it was - for me - The Drum Kit 4 Evah!

Led Zeppelin’s debut album was released in January, 1969, while they were on tour in the US. Beginning in September, 1968, the band toured Scandinavia under the name “New Yardbirds.” Later in 1969, they did go back and forth between the UK and Scandinavia, so that’s when your the other Danmark Radio recording was done.

I had been playing drums for about 3 years, when this album came out. I bought it, and gave it a listen. I instantly felt simultaneously inspired and inadequate, as a drummer. Bonham was so different from the drummers I had been listening to, at that time. Over half a century later, I still find him inspiring.
Can you imagine seeing Zeppelin in a club in the early days and then seeing Black Sabbath in the same month will their monster improv. in Wicked World, Wall of Sleep, Warning and The Wizard? Bloody Hell. Indeed. Somebody must have been there as a teen drummer getting well inspired!! Cheers for the reaction!

Yes, Bill Ward was killer too. Sab and Zep went into some killer improv jams, so did Deep Purple and Jethro Tull
I love the way this song swings! It's basically a giant improv with inspiration from Howlin' Wolf's "How Many More Years", Booker T and the MG's "The Hunter", Jeff Beck's "Becks Bolero" (which Jimmy wrote, produced, and played on as well as John Paul Jones), plus bits and pieces from both The Yardbirds and Robert's former band, Band of Joy. Played live, the improvisation might include bits of "Travelin' Little Mama", "Boogie Chillun'", "That's Alright Mama", and anything else they could throw into the mix. As @SnakeInTheGrass mentioned there is a 20-minute live version which showcases some of this improv and I hope you do a reaction to it.

As an Oldster I was around when LZ1 was released. The production was first class, quality even higher, music sensational. There are many fantastic Zep tracks, some studio, some live, amongst them Good Times Bad Times, The Lemon Song (listen to JPJ), Kashmir (listen to JPJ on keyboards, Fool in the Rain a lovely shuffle, etc. IMHO, this is the BEST of them all by far. It has swing. There is rare video (on the Tube) of LZ playing some large American venue for hours. The sound isn't that good, nor is the (distant) video but WOW. Unfortunately most of the audience didn't 'get it', but WOW, just improvising, what a show for the dedicated fan.
I remember my friend giving me tapes of Led Zeppelin 2 and 4 that belonged to his brother. After listening to those 2 cassettes I was on my way. I was terrible. lol 😀
When first putting this debut masterpiece, of an album, onto my phonograph (record) player, THIS song was OUR favorite instantly. "How Many More Times" stands out in so many ways, Bonham just went MAD on this one! This song is FAR too underrated and still is one of my favorites, perhaps maybe for that very reason. Easily the BEST debut album ever, for me and many others. The punch, the musical talent, the wails, the power, the grooves it was ALL there! Well Done Andrew!!

What you describe about picking up the album for the first time is EXACTLY true. In perhaps June 69 my friend said come and listen to my big brother's new album. I was all in from the drum guitar opening of Good Times Bad Times. Exhilarating! This one was always my favourite though. One further often overlooked point. Led Zeppelin production was a massive jump forward from other rock albums of the era point of reference Cream let alone Vanilla Fudge, Iron Butterfly etc. Page was a genius producer.
Led Zeppelin's first is still probably my favorite of theirs from the opening to the closing. That and Houses of the Holy are my two go-to Zeppelin albums.

I had a similar comment to your reaction to Tommy Aldridge, but this album was another favorite of mine that I used to listen to on my paper route when I was 14 or 15 in 1981. this song always blew me away. Robert’s incredible vocals behind this driving music.
I was lucky to have learned to play by listening to some of greatest of all time. Bonham, Peart, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Stewart Copeland, Bill Bruford and Ringo. Man we had it good growing up. There are some mind blowing performers these days but where are the incredible bands that we had the privilege to listen to like Zeppelin, The Who, Hendrix, Rush, etc?

Again, I hear the Tom Morello influence in Bonzo’s drumming, especially during the Jazzy interlude with the bowed guitar. And I love the heavy shuffle that follows. Time to dig into Led Zeppelin II.

Great vid Sir, I just have to say something. I grew up as the son of a drummer. I picked up the sticks at 16, was self taught, and learned via osmosis listening to and playing along with any and everything. I eventually went on to play in many club bands for over twenty years. Watching this vid, I was a bit surprised by how many little pieces of what JB did in this song that I played in my performances without really knowing where I picked them up. There were so many truly great drummers who I listened to over and over it's impossible to know which drummer I learned what from. Thanks for the surprising trip down memory lane and the smile it put on my face when I realized how much of my "style" of drumming came from this great drummer... 😎
OK. I bought this album when it was first released. So worn now it reflects like a mirror ! I was a drummer at the time; I was mesmerised. It's not even a solo; and perhaps all the better for it ! This was before drum and bass ! I could not understand what Drum and Bass was all about. Listening to JPJ and Bonzo is a dimension in itself. Try The Lemon Song and listen to the rhythmic groove. Sensational.
I like this concept of going through a whole album. And there would be so many more, even from that same time.
Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Iron Butterfky, Jethro Tull..all these legends. Have you ever heard of the album "Just a pole" from Sweet smole? Brainticket by Brainticket? Or: An electric storm in hell by White Noise? "First Base" by Babe Ruth?
About Zep: (taken from an InterView with Pagey at a UK University). They went to Chicago, 'cause there was a radio station theat played full sides of albums in each one heap. He wanted exactly that! He wrote all their 1st songs longer than 3 minutes.
On pirpose: 3 min did fit on a single. He wanted to avoid one single song taken from one album. And the rest to be forgotten.
I think the variety of songs on this album shows it.

Saw them at one of there first concerts at what is now Surrey University in Guildford Surrey uk. The sound of his drums in a smallish venue was amazing and so loud as well as the rest of the band. I also remember how tight JPJ was with Bonham and how he played with the lead guitar. Yes the first album was a revelation and I have all the original vinyl albums. Still play them to this day find have more feeling than cd
I don’t know if you’ve done it yet, but you need to react and listen to Zeppelin’s Achilles Last Stand. To me, it’s one of Bonham’s best drum tracks and certainly my favorite. It shows his powerhouse side as well as all the little nuances he could also do. Highly recommended!! You won’t be disappointed!
Isn't it just so amazing how hard it(song/whole album) hits 50+ years later!?! 50 MORE YEARS LATER WHAT WILL REACTORS/REVIEWERS SAY? I'm able to say I was there when it all began and sadly when it ended, Now future gen's will have to take it from here.

I finally am glad Andrew, that you really appreciate Led Zep. They were unbelievable live in the early years before drugs. Alcohol knocked off their live perfection. It was part of what eventually led to the end. Their reputation as party animals is understated at best. It was what killed the greatest drummer arguably of all time. Top 5 my list : John Bonzo Bonham RIP, Neil Peart RIP, Bill Ward ( at one time was as good as Bonham) , Carl Palmer of ELP, & Keith Moon RIP🎸😎🎼
