The normal shotgun really is a very dependable longer range weapon, lotta people just stupidly diss it because they only look at the SSGs sheer close combat power, disregarding the very real drawbacks.
@@0neDoomedSpaceMarine normal shotgun is also quite nice for handling lesser enemies at a close range. Why waste ammo on the super shotgun if you dont need to amirite.
@@deadturret4049 Exactly, less ammo cost for lone goons but also great range for goons at longer distances. If two monsters are next to each other at like 1000 map units away, it's usually easy to get most, often all of your pellets, to connect, due to the very flat horizontal spread. Like two, or even three imps on a tall ledge out of your reach? Perfect. It's also great for shooting at lone cacos up in the air, they have a high pain chance, so the multiple shots make them flinch often.
"You know its coming, but still" That is kind of the problem. Plutonia very quickly becomes "dont grab any items because its going to spawn in the revenant and chaingunners". Its every.single.time... it becomes very here we go again mutiple times every level..

He did get somebody to pretend to be Katie in one of the more recent episodes, crying about needing to sit through a bunch of Hell’s Kitchen in order to find the “fuckin’ raw” sound bite.
My biggest issue with Plutonia isn't the use of monsters, but that darn inconsistency when it comes what damages you and what doesn't - as you pointed out. Either stick to the OG DOOM rule book or create your own, but goddamn, don't switch it up every level or two. It makes the whole thing feel cheap, when it really isn't. Also, if anyone thinks Plutonia's use of Archviles goes bananas, try Eviternity. It has amazing map design, but heck-of-a-brutal use of evil enemy placement - and Dragonfly loves his Archviles.
@@DinnerForkTongue Eviternity is good stuff, the latest great Megawad, released in February. The dude who made it is now the level design lead on Prodeus.

Nah, Go 2 It is really easy, long, yeah, but it is very generous with all those Megaspheres, rockets and plasma cells laying around. If it wasn't for that, I would say could be one of the hardest levels.
It's the first official slaughter-type map, though, and I'm thankful for its existence. Otherwise we wouldn't have "For We Are Many", one of my absolute favorite Doom maps ever.

Dude. I just randomly found your channel, and I have been chain-watching your videos. Holy shit how have I been missing out on your vids? Thank you so much for keeping me entertained! You've got a new sub
@Felipe Gomes so, funny thing about Go 2 It: that map has the same number of Things (that is, enemies and items) regardless of what skill level you play it on. playing it on Nightmare still makes the enemies faster and makes them respawn on their own, but there's no scaling of enemy hit points and attack strength between skill levels. Go 2 It plays exactly the same on Hey Not Too Rough as it does on Ultra-Violence, so congratulations
Sigil is a different beast from Plutonia, and anyone who tries to compare the two I'd wager hasn't played either, and probably not even Doom or Doom 2 proper. Plutonia gives you a shitload of ammo but still too many monsters to deal with. Sigil gives you less monsters, but also deprives you of resources to a point of absurdity that even I imagined an entire Megawad by Romero could reach. Sigil is absolutely cruel and designed with pure pain and hatred in it's design. It's also made harder by the fact that it's missing the SSG (I think a Doom 1 wad was actually BETTER for this reason, contrarily to most others. I think we all kinda got a little too used to Doom 2 weapons and monsters, and Romero dragging us back to his stomping ground was a nice change of pace.) Plutonia is hard, but Sigil was just an unexpected gut-punch of Romero's cruelty to the fans after 25 years.
@@femi-naziolanerkek2029 og doom was never hard. Plutonia just puts a ton of enemies against you but also gives you a shit ton of ammo for all your weapons. If you know what you’re doing and where the shitty traps are then most fights go from difficult to being drawn out corner peaking rocket spam

Honestly, Plutonia is not that difficult, and pretty much laid the foundation for your standard Megawad. Scythe 2, one of the most well known and celebrated Megawads, ups the ante by the last third, introducing extremely high monster counts and some downright evil traps. Actually, a pro Scythe, or Scythe 2 video would be pretty sweet.

I know it's old, but Plutonia means so much to me. I'm someone who was there when Doom first dropped--my only initial access to it was that shareware version. I remember our family friend Caleb dragging me and my sister back to show us this INCREDIBLE new game that we couldn't miss. Doom was quite instrumental in shaping my gaming experience. The Plutonia Experiment helped me through SO many bad rage moments at work later in life. When I was so, SO angry at my bosses for whatever bullshit they'd pull, I'd smile, complete my shift, go home, load up Doom with the Brutal Doom mod on...and play through Plutonia. If I needed instant relief, I'd specifically play Go 2 It on the highest difficulty. What? Oh, no. I wouldn't do it for the challenge--there was no challenge involved. Because I'd invoke the sacred letters. You know them. IDDQD and IDKFA. Yes. Plutonia with cheat codes is one of the greatest stress-relievers I have ever experienced. Brutal Doom made it even more satisfying, but Level 32 is honestly enough on its own with those enemies. I'd play that, get my rage out, and then just....calm down and think rationally through the bad day. I never needed to hit things, scream, or take anything out on anyone close to me. I'd just unleash ALL OF IT on these pixels and it saved me so many times from making a terrible mistake.

This was my very first time playing Plutonia at all! The worst part is, I had a blast. I can absolutely see how this is your favorite. CV-11, I feel honor flowing through me. Thank you for making me a glutton for punishment.
I haven't played the Plutonia maps in literally 22 years, and somehow I still remember not only some of the maps themselves, but how I had to barely skate by on the thinnest of ammo margins while having 16% health and trying to kill something too far away to take the full brunt of even a pistol shot, before it killed me. Plutonia Experiment was the NES Ninja Gaiden 2 & 3, the SNES Lucasarts Star Wars games, the punishingly frustrating Ghosts n' Goblins of the original Doom campaigns.
Plutonia honestly is probably my favorite of the classic doom campaigns officially released by ID. There's just a lot of hectic fights and its a rush to play.
Ive talked to people who hate it. It has the perfect mix of beauty and danger to it. And it feels like the purest of the commercial wads, as in you have to understand the game to do well in this one. Its for the real doom fans lol
Plutonia is great because of the level design and the puzzles. The author behind Plutonia perfected the level puzzles that id software began when they made Doom 2 levels like "Barrels'o fun" and "Gotcha!". In Plutonia you need to use the powerups in the right order at the right time, and kill monsters in the right order. And abuse lots of monster infighting. The Plutonia levels takes use of all the mechanics that makes Doom fun.
6:40 funny now that you mentioned it. In E3M3 Pandemonium from the Ultimate Doom, there is water that kills you. My guess is that it's radioactive water considering it's as damaging as lava itself.

Plutonia Experiement or: How I Learned to Stop Using Super Shotgun and Love the Pump-Action Shotgun (due to sniping).

“None of you understand. I'm not locked up in here with YOU. You're locked up in here with ME." --Civvie 11

I think we all kinda got a little too used to Doom 2 weapons and monsters, and Romero dragging us back to his stomping ground was a nice change of pace.)
