Hey civvie, if you go to the secret that unlocks the riveter, on the left of the teleporter there is a basketball that you can teleport with you. If you take it to the house with the jump pad in it (the wall next to the pond) there is a basketball hoop. If you put it on top of the basketball hoop a secret door opens and gives you every weapon exept the super shotgun.
Little nitpick on the Crystal of Madness; when destroyed, it'll create a green cloud and ANY enemy that walks into that cloud will begin attacking other enemies and leave you alone, even after they've left the cloud. Once you attack them though, they'll turn hostile again.
Secret Spoiler There's a basket ball in Episode 1 Level 2 where you get the secret Riviter. Bring that back to the house and put it through the hoop on the side and you'll unlock Rachel's Secret, which gives you a ton of good stuff.
over 50 hours on steam since release, and I learned so many things from this video, holy shit, the soap killing enemies, flushing items in the toilet, weapon spinning being a melee attack, cooking the meat, you can flip in the air, had no idea about any of that shit
I know this video is like three years old, but this game is new to me, and this video has been the best advertisement. Definitely going to pick this up as my next video game related purchase
I find it funny that he mentions how the crossbow is an easy weapon to underestimate. It is, but not as easy to underestimate as the starting sickles and their ability to hit projectiles back at enemies. Makes the guys with homing fireballs even more fun.
I guess Civvie freaked out a bit when he realised WHO voice acted the last Boss of DUSK :) Btw: There´s also a secret third experiment when you fight the Episode 1 Boss; the "failed" experiment. I laughed out loud when I saw that :) Great Video, as always Civvie. Keep up the awesome work!
14:00 I love it when games do this. Let you learn by playing. A modern "AAA" game would have had a guy tell you over the radio or something "The crossbow can shoot through walls and enemies, try it out!" I like modern shooters but they do treat you like you're an idiot sometimes.
In older games the sense of exploration came from figuring out the mechanics, story bits, etc. Devs these days are too afraid that you're gonna miss something while playing, or even worse, have to play through it second time to discover something.
Man the creativity in these retro like shooters and even the older ones is amazing I love the cheesiness of them I love the secrets and the humour is a novelty I mean a bar of soap can kill a boss in one hit
I laughed so hard when the switch puzzle for that big battle opened IMMEDIATELY, after conditioning me to expect to fiddle with the switches for a minute or so.
Gotta give it to the Civvie, he makes the art of playing oldschool FPS look like a thing of beauty... ..Aaand that game goes on my wishlist and gonna get the moment I feel like playing a game involving mowing down copious amounts of enemies..
my favorite detail about the Second Experiment boss at the end of episode 1: before the first horse boss, the game gives you a puzzle where you have to flip multiple switches in a certain pattern. after the boss you see a similar arrangement of 6 switches and a door, so you'd think you have to figure out another combination right? wrong, as soon as you press any of the switches the door opens and the 2nd horse boss attacks you instantly. it's such a great fuck-you moment lol
So I've never really been a huge fan of these retro shooters before. Liked the art style, so decided to try it out. And god was it good... all thanks to these videos.
Fun fact: during the big fight to get to the shed with that key you need to leave the level in Down on the Farm (E1M2), there's a rapidfire totem sitting on the roof of that shed. Dario Casali would be proud.
I played through it on the difficulty just below yours and loved it. The music is epic, I love the way it goes from eerie and creepy to balls to the walls metal when needed. The movement is superb, the enemies interesting, the level design is brilliant, I can't think of anything negative to say about it really. Also I just finished playing through the classic redux version of Shadow Warrior and the expansions and I love the Lo Wang reference with the soap here!
This is probably one of the only times I've listened to a youtuber when they told me "turn off the video and go play/watch/read [subject of video]" because I knew Dusk was going to be that good. Thanks, Civvie.
I like to think that Jakob knew the Intoxigator wouldn't even touch DuskDude, so he left booze lying around knowing the player wouldn't resist drinking it and getting intoxicated himself.
In E1M2, There’s a secret basketball in the riveter room, if you teleport with it and take it to the house and put it through the hoop on the side of the farm house, you get a secret dev room that gives you every weapon in the game with respawning ammunition (except the hunting rifle for some reason)
Those details are amazing. You can even blow up the trees with a strong enough weapon. It's a throwback but it does so much original shit that couldn't have been possible back in the day
I loved finding things in this game. Like i incidentally found out about the toilets and tried it on myself and found a secret level by flushing myself lol. Or whem i found out you can use the sickles to hit back the enemy projeciles towards them lol
this video may be five years old at this point, but I gotta just put this idea out into the ether: I had an idea for flintlock pistols that have magic runes inscribed along the barrel, so as you spin them after firing, it completes a glowy spell circle that automatically reloads them from your available ammo. A nice combination of aesthetic and function.
"And destroys the intended level progression..." If you wanna talk about ruining the level progression... In E1M2 find the basketball near the teleporter in that one secret with the riveter and dunk it in the hoop on the side of the house...

This is what a man has heard.
Little nitpick on the Crystal of Madness; when destroyed, it'll create a green cloud and ANY enemy that walks into that cloud will begin attacking other enemies and leave you alone, even after they've left the cloud. Once you attack them though, they'll turn hostile again.
Secret Spoiler
There's a basket ball in Episode 1 Level 2 where you get the secret Riviter. Bring that back to the house and put it through the hoop on the side and you'll unlock Rachel's Secret, which gives you a ton of good stuff.
Sounds like a System Shock 2 reference from the Athletics level.
rachael is my niece , Davids wife
over 50 hours on steam since release, and I learned so many things from this video, holy shit, the soap killing enemies, flushing items in the toilet, weapon spinning being a melee attack, cooking the meat, you can flip in the air, had no idea about any of that shit
Finally bought DUSK today, and holy what the heck!! This game truly is a jewel among throwback boomer shooters. 10 out of 10 for me!
Thanks for giving me some long form videos on Dusk, really wish more people I like LPed it.
Sitting here sore as hell from a labor heavy weekend and Civvie uploads. Feel much better. That's the Civvie difference!
Exactly
I know this video is like three years old, but this game is new to me, and this video has been the best advertisement. Definitely going to pick this up as my next video game related purchase
Hulshult's work has been the ost of my life for a while now
I feel in love with this game, really. I haven't had such good time with shooter since Quake and Unreal Tournament.
You deserve many more subscribers. I'm dead serious, you're my new favorite channel
Music in old time religion is very reminiscent of Jespyr Kyds work for hit man 2, particularly the opening levels
Hey CV-11 there’s a 3rd boss called the Failed Experiment after last level boss.
Also did you know Nightdive Studios are remaking Blood.
I've had up to 3 rapid fire totems at the same time. They do stack, and firing the machine gun in this state causes the sound to clip. It's great.
"Ashes to Ashes, Dusk to Dus"k sounds a lot like the Health- "Future" from Max Payne 3.
that games soundtrack is so good
Man i swear between you and Gmanlives ive never been so flushed with games i missed at launch to check out
0:27 In Civvie's Dungeon, we won't need eyes to see.
Event Horizon FTW
I find it funny that he mentions how the crossbow is an easy weapon to underestimate. It is, but not as easy to underestimate as the starting sickles and their ability to hit projectiles back at enemies. Makes the guys with homing fireballs even more fun.
Can I inject this straight into my brain? Waiting every Monday for a highly edited masterpiece by Civvie is a blessing and curse.
I want to thank you for this series. Got this game a week back. Love every second of it.
I guess Civvie freaked out a bit when he realised WHO voice acted the last Boss of DUSK :)
Btw: There´s also a secret third experiment when you fight the Episode 1 Boss; the "failed" experiment. I laughed out loud when I saw that :)
Great Video, as always Civvie. Keep up the awesome work!
Holy shit, I completely forgot that this is the guy
Who was it?
Stephen. Freaking. Weyte.
Dusk is one of the best FPS's I've played in years. Glad to see you're giving it the attention it deserves.
14:00
I love it when games do this. Let you learn by playing.
A modern "AAA" game would have had a guy tell you over the radio or something "The crossbow can shoot through walls and enemies, try it out!"
I like modern shooters but they do treat you like you're an idiot sometimes.
In older games the sense of exploration came from figuring out the mechanics, story bits, etc. Devs these days are too afraid that you're gonna miss something while playing, or even worse, have to play through it second time to discover something.
Yeah, but it literally gives you a line of text telling you you can shoot through walls and enemies when you first pick it up.
One thing I love about Episode 1 is that some of the levels have rooms ripped straight out of Doom and Quake. Awesome references
So glad you're doing DUSK!
Man the creativity in these retro like shooters and even the older ones is amazing I love the cheesiness of them I love the secrets and the humour is a novelty I mean a bar of soap can kill a boss in one hit
Man this channel needs more attention. It's literally the only good let's play channel on youtube.
Do you know what a let's play is?
I laughed so hard when the switch puzzle for that big battle opened IMMEDIATELY, after conditioning me to expect to fiddle with the switches for a minute or so.
Dusk doesn't just emulate the greats well. In a lot of ways it surpasses them, and not just in a technological sense.
Level designers have almost 30 years of FPS games to use as case studies so the bar is higher now
@@mollywantshugs5944
The bar was set by Dusk.
Gotta give it to the Civvie, he makes the art of playing oldschool FPS look like a thing of beauty...
..Aaand that game goes on my wishlist and gonna get the moment I feel like playing a game involving mowing down copious amounts of enemies..
Stephan Weyte did voicework for this game! I can't find a listing for who did what voices, but I suspect he did the mage/cultist aggro voices.
Nope. He did the final boss.
Nyarlathotep only as far as I know. I believe Oshry and Szymanski did some of the others
Jakob is voiced by Andrew Hulshult
Weyte only shows up as a cameo at the end of ep3
my favorite detail about the Second Experiment boss at the end of episode 1: before the first horse boss, the game gives you a puzzle where you have to flip multiple switches in a certain pattern. after the boss you see a similar arrangement of 6 switches and a door, so you'd think you have to figure out another combination right? wrong, as soon as you press any of the switches the door opens and the 2nd horse boss attacks you instantly. it's such a great fuck-you moment lol
An all-caps comment by Dave should be here any second now...
SORRY I GOT HERE AS FAST I COULD DID I MISS THE COMMENTS FUCK
@@DaveOshry oh shit he's here
quick guys how's my hair
That's what Edward predicted. @War Zone
I fucking love the event horizon references in civvies reviews
civvie needs to do retrospectives on movies like that
Playing with pixelisation on and bilinear filtering turned off.....
I'll allow it.
So I've never really been a huge fan of these retro shooters before. Liked the art style, so decided to try it out. And god was it good... all thanks to these videos.
Quaff means to drink an alcoholic drink hardly or with enjoyment
Fun fact: during the big fight to get to the shed with that key you need to leave the level in Down on the Farm (E1M2), there's a rapidfire totem sitting on the roof of that shed. Dario Casali would be proud.
14:36 Does anyone know them Duke boys' hillbilly theme?
I played through it on the difficulty just below yours and loved it. The music is epic, I love the way it goes from eerie and creepy to balls to the walls metal when needed. The movement is superb, the enemies interesting, the level design is brilliant, I can't think of anything negative to say about it really.
Also I just finished playing through the classic redux version of Shadow Warrior and the expansions and I love the Lo Wang reference with the soap here!
"Look at that spooky ghost!"
Maybe my favorite line
I have remember playing this game, like the part they added a cryptic called the wendigo that cloaks
When you quaff beer, the game becomes Dusk 64, lol.
So... What about "Ion Maiden" or "AMID EVIL"?
Those details are amazing. You can even blow up the trees with a strong enough weapon. It's a throwback but it does so much original shit that couldn't have been possible back in the day
Can you make a review of Quake 1.5 please civvie.
I loved finding things in this game. Like i incidentally found out about the toilets and tried it on myself and found a secret level by flushing myself lol. Or whem i found out you can use the sickles to hit back the enemy projeciles towards them lol
15:28 You're welcome.
this video may be five years old at this point, but I gotta just put this idea out into the ether:
I had an idea for flintlock pistols that have magic runes inscribed along the barrel, so as you spin them after firing, it completes a glowy spell circle that automatically reloads them from your available ammo.
A nice combination of aesthetic and function.
*Sees new Civvie upload*
I didnt need to sleep anyway
Sleep can go squirt itself with a coffee enema, Civvie is much more fuckin' important!
"And destroys the intended level progression..."
If you wanna talk about ruining the level progression...
In E1M2 find the basketball near the teleporter in that one secret with the riveter and dunk it in the hoop on the side of the house...
Press F for flashlight.
I just beat this game a few days ago and I NEVER complete games. So good
