This got me thinking. I wonder if they'll bring back the Icon of Sin for DooM: Eternal as a boss fight at least three times the size of the Spider Mastermind or the Cyberdemon from DooM 2016, effectively doubling as it's own level, until eventually it moves around, no longer just a hanging head that spawns monsters, but a colossal beast straight out of Lost Planet 2, stomping around and creating miniature lava shockwaves while still spawning monsters from it's skull...... okay, I want that now. It'd do the wall texture some justice in the modern titles.
I could see them doing this, honestly. I've noticed that in Eternal they've even changed a lot of the enemies from Doom 2016 to look more like their original designs, so I think bringing back the Icon of Sin is definitely in the cards, at least in a reimagined form for a better gameplay challenge.

Me and my brother measured monster's health in rockets (one close up SSG blast was equivalent to a rocket according to our experiences :p), so it brought me joy to see in the HK file @5:50 in that little note on the bottom left there is a similar observation c:
24:45 DOOM is 3D (though it can't represent the full range of 3D architecture) and understands height (tall monsters can get stuck trying to go through doors and rockets can pass over monsters). The infinitely tall monsters thing is intentionally there to stop situations where you could fall atop a zombieguy standing in an elevator and get stuck, unable to auto-aim down at them and they unable to auto-aim up at you. Since id was already making a groundbreaking engine with a small team they simply took the easy way out and prevented this from happening. It's actually fairly trivial to turn infinite height collision off in the source code which is why source ports and Heretic/Hexen did so.
Well, the reason why that aiming thing was a problem to begin with is that the renderer is not 3D, either, and if up/down look was implemented it would be through Y-shearing, which is very limited and looks terrible. The only thing that is 3D in Doom is positioning of entities, which is simple enough to plot out in an abstract space. I prefer not to call the game "3D" because that implies it has all the capabilities of a game like Quake.
You play a game with its original limitations the same way a 1700's period actor uses period equipment instead of showing up in their 10$ sweatpants and a T-shirt. Sometimes you just want to experience how something used to be, no matter how shit / archaic it is compared to its modern counterpart, and quite frankly, sometimes the old shit is more fun, even if it is clunky.
One of my earliest memories, alongside learning to swim, is my dad playing Map 28 and commenting that the hallway with the scrolling spine texture was likely to give people headaches. That's a permanent memory instead of something useful, like how to do taxes.
I played Doom/Doom 2 before I had a soundcard but the internal speaker did a bang-up job as a stand in. But the reloading noise for the SSG was atrocious. Replaying the games with a Soundblaster 16 was an almost religious experience.
Yea, me and my dad used to play Doom II (Windows) 95 and we didn't have a soundcard back then. When we bought one, it was one of the coolest experiences.
I've got a weird soft spot for the beeper sound effects. I grew up playing it with the full sound experience but I've been playin around with FreeDOS on my newer machines and those beeps have been a pretty decent stand-in

tricks and traps will probably be my favorite doom level for all eternity, just bc the feeling of destroying a room full of barons and a cyberdemon with no bfg is just fucking *delicious*
For you Xbox players, the super-secret level Grosse is the best place to get the achievement for killing a Cyberdemon by punching it to death. You get the Berserk pack right away, so go lure him out, nail him a couple times with the BFG, then grab the invincibility power-up in the east secret wall and beat his ass to death. It's still kinda tough because his rockets push you away; either get sandwiched between him and a wall or circle-strafe point blank to dodge his shots. You can also do it in Refueling Base, but that Cyberdemon teleports and ammo's kinda tight.
I feel like the castle map is what spawned the later idea of allowing fast travel just prior to level completion in the later games. Really made cleaning up in that level a lot less tedious

A veritable legend commenting about a veritable legend. Surely I am not worthy to witness this.
I'm glad to see that you're a man of culture that recognizes that the Archivile was the best addition to Doom 2 and completely changes encounters when they show up.
he is a Man of Culture in every possible way. he recognizes the fact that level 9's music, (Into Sandy's City) is the one of the best doom themes in the game.
also recognizing that the Super shotgun is one of the best shotgun ever made in any video game
also recognizing that the skelly bois are the meme lords of Doom
also recognizing that pain elements are so hated even other demons hate them.
the list just piles up
That Archvile praise just killed any chances there will ever be a Joel/Civvie collab
Also you recognize that Into Sandy's City is the best track in the Doom series (discounting TNT)
@@JeanMarceaux
I'm sure Joel realizes that they are overall good additions to the Doom bestiary. He just doesn't like how people spam them in wads for fake challenge.
@@meyes5671 he realizes, that's for sure, he just despises them to the bitter end. Check out his "Soundless Mound" playthrough, how he reached to just one AV. Not helping is the fact that he was jinxing it the entire time saying that, at the end, there will be an AV.
A huge dickmove not mentioned:
In Monster Condo, theres a secret that closes *30 seconds after you start the map*
If you want 100% secrets its a major pain
Ouch.
That's evil
I never knew about that until now. That's fuckin mean...
However, getting to the secret is easy once you know where it is.
And note about The Citadel: the floor the teleporters are on is in a vague shape of the Citadel itself, so each teleporter will take you to it corresponding spot on the map. It took me a number of playthroughs to realize.
I'm embarrassed at the number of times I should have figured this out but didn't.
TNT and Plutonia are the famous fanmade WADs that got a retail release, but No Rest For The Living is also worth a video I think. It's got some nice architecture using just the stock Doom 2 textures, some frantic battles, and a really cool riff on Tower of Babel for the finale.
The only real weakness of NRftL is the lack of backpacks.
I truly, deeply, absolutely felt Civvie's hate when he introduced the Pain Elemental.
I got introduced to Pain Elementals in Doom 64. Absolutely loathe those motherfuckers.
Glad i'm not the only one who loves "Into Sandy's City".
I actually use it as my ringtone.
The normal shotgun has 7 pellets per shot, but instead of having double the pellets (14) since it uses double the shells, it actually has 21 per shot.
Which is why it's 'super'
Three years late, but actually, it's "only" 20 pellets per shot on the Super Shotgun. Doesn't take away from how OP it is, anyway.
@@dariogonzalez8989 So I was one pellet off…
My argument still stands.
and civvie got super lucky triggering the arch viles pain chance bastards are hell in one demon

Doom 2 is so immortal. Fucking iconic. My introduction to the glory that is Doom when I was a kid and wanted to get mechwarrior 2, and my brother found this on the shelf. He and my dad won out and we took Doom 2 home. I can't even be mad about it. Amazing experience that im still not done revisiting. There were many a moment in the game that were pants shittingly scary for us, but one of the most memorable was finding Romero's head, and when we went to shoot him, the screen froze with his face in it's pain state, and crashed. At some point, we made a pact to not play the game after dark. Good fucking times.
I share your love for the SUPER SHOTGUN, the holy grail of shotguns, the lord of buckshot, the patron saint of demon slaying. The "BOOM-clack-clack" at this point evokes a Pavlovian reaction in the pleasure center of my brain.

Because of that, i started playing doom from plutonia and tnt, also pistol starts.
When i started playing doom 1, i was disapointed in the lack of super shotgun, and to this day, i cannot like original doom because of no ssg

In the manual, the Super shotgun is referred to as the "Combat shotgun" with the description "Combat shotguns are double-barreled, sawed-off killings sticks. The best things about the Pro Doom videos is they've given me an easy and entertaining thing to point people towards to help them understand why Doom is such a masterpiece.

DOOM is 3D (though it can't represent the full range of 3D architecture) and understands height (tall monsters can get stuck trying to go through doors and rockets can pass over monsters).
I prefer not to call the game "3D" because that implies it has all the capabilities of a game like Quake.
it is 3D if you play it in a source port without any Boomer compat options, why turn them off anyways? it's like wanting to play in 320x240
