Bowie's haunting farewell to the world. This completes the space-age saga of Major Tom, Bowie's first character creation. Listen to Space Oddity, Ashes to Ashes, and then this again. Bowie turned his death into a requiem.

"Blackstar" is the title track to David Bowie's final album. Bowie knew he was dying when he made the album and the songs on it reflect on his mortality as well as on his lengthy career in music. It seems to me that while the songs on that album are not abrasive to the ear, they were not meant to be easy to listen to or make sense of immediately, but were instead meant to take a long time and many hearings to figure out. I've been listening to his music for nearly fifty years now and I'm still not sure to make of this song. You might want to pick one of his happier songs after that, songs like "Let's Dance" or "Young Americans" or "Soul Love".
