He used his free time to cheat, used his little income to drink and buy drugs behind my back, and resented my work to the point he'd pick a fight with me every day as I was getting ready to go to work or would take my car so I'dbe late. Self-sufficiency is basic in life. If they can't master that or are plain lazy, don't even think of touching them with a 6ft pole.

There is a good point here. If I love someone and at the same time there is some kind of mess in my life I would feel responsible for bringing this mess to my partner. I would not want bad things in my life to affect his or her life. For example right now I have a health problem, and I am quite scared to face it. So this is not the time to start a new relationship, even if I want and have an opportunity to do so. First things go first, my future partner deserves better than what I represent right now.
