    Archeology is a very interdisciplinary science.
    Consulting a redstone engineer for analysing ancient redstone circuitry is absolutely normal.

    Something that actually stood out to me is the fact that they had comparators in the first place.
    I don't know if this connection has been made yet, but that would mean they had to have access to the nether, in order to get nether quartz.
    Other chests had enchanted gear inside as well, meaning they wouldn't be going in completely unprepared. All of this makes me wonder if these people could have something to do with the ruined portals we can find today.

    • @Max_The_Flower

      They also have access to soul soil for the blue fire and lanterns, plus polished basalt pillars.
      Although them having basalt and comparators never really stood out to me because there is smooth basalt that can be found in geodes, which we know they have access to due to amethysts being found in some chests. There isn’t any way to make pillars out of smooth basalt but the ancient city could’ve used some unknown method to make pillars from smooth basalt, like how they’re the only ones to figure out how to get echo shards. Comparators could be silmilar, they used something other than quartz in them.
      I don’t have any way to justify them having soul soil though, that seems like a very nether thing, if it was just the lanterns they could’ve used a substitute, but there is also actual soul soil there as well, so I dunno.
      I guess underwater ruins have magma, which also feels very nether so maybe uhh yeah I dunno.

      Oh yeah! I think Daskalos may have mentioned that in one of his episodes, due to soul sand and soul lanterns. But definitely needed quartz and glowstone to make those redstone components!

    • @whitemagus2000

      They also use soul sand, soul torches, and lots of soul lanterns, so they definitely had access to the nether, either directly or through trade.

    I got so excited yesterday when Daskalos mentioned he’d be letting you do the ‘redstone room’ interpretation! I think it’s clear to anyone who’s been watching his series that while you may not be an archaeologist, you’ve picked up on a lot of how he does his interpretations! A thought about why there’s grass down there - maybe the Ancient Builders were unsure if this strange dust with mechanical properties could function above ground so they wanted to test if grass or dirt affected how it worked? Like say they wanted to add traps, maybe tripwire connected to automatic arrows, to protect some important temples on the surface from looters? First step before putting in a higher atmosphere I guess?

      It's also interesting how the grass room seems to be the only room that's being actively lit by a redstone lamp, and while they use soul lanterns in other places in the lab, perhaps they were also testing if redstone lamps can make grass grow? Just another possibility.

    Honestly, I'm a redstone noob and your explanation of how the setup works has helped my understanding immensely. So thanks for that. I was waiting to see how this particular thing worked, as I find this whole archaeological approach to be quite fun.
    The apple being what sets it off is pretty serious levels of understanding of the mechanics. It makes it feel like it isn't a lab at all, and was just to exhibit knowledge to initiates or something. Only special people allowed. They probably wouldn't want everyone to know their secrets. Someone eating the apple on the altar to open the doors, without being able to see them, means that the person on the altar probably wasn't the one to go into the basement. It's a bit of a distance. You'd have to be near the doors, hidden under the walkway, to get in before they closed, unless you were incredibly quick and already knew where to go. Just makes it feel like a setup. Like, someone on the altar to draw attention for ceremony's sake, and the secret order going in to convene down below, in the shadows.
    I was thinking those cubbies were all shelves of some kind, myself.
    That one room may be on grass just to draw your attention to it first: To have it be the one you examined and learned from, before moving on to the next. It's all very well-made, and your description of all the demonstrations proves they had and were passing on some high-level knowledge and skill.
    And some of those components require nether quartz to craft, so you know they had to be making some trips there, or have a trading relationship with the piglins or something. Pretty serious implications.

    I believe the pillagers raided the loot from here, and put a sheep farm there in the grass pen, but they died. So later they wanted to learn how to use redstone fearing its dangers, they experimented with it here and later aplied it in thier mansions.

    Thanks for this one Oda! You and Daskalos have done an amazing job with the AC restoration series.
    I never really thought about the Redstone room before this video, but after your walkthrough it feels a lot more like a classroom with a test at the end. I imagine a mentor and apprentice Redstoners conducting the ritual of entry into the lab, and they only leave when the apprentice has learned enough to explain how the door works. Which would explain why both sides open simultaneously. The storage space could have been food and other consumables, and why they are empty now. Each room would be meant to teach how each component works. The grass/dirt area is for farming when the apprentice is more my speed of learning Redstone (slow). 😂

    • @MC_Oda
      @MC_Oda  3 дні тому +4

      Oh wow, I love the idea of the mentor and apprentice. Only when they can get the full circuit running can the doors be opened! What a cool idea! And depending on how long that took, they wold most definitely need food and cots!

    The thing that’s very striking about this area is that it is clearly intended to teach and that teaching is tied to the ceremonial purpose of the central building. This is a building that seems to resemble some sort of alter, but it also has a door to allow people into an educational space to learn about redstone engineering. It seems possible, then, that this engineering was a prided aspect of the culture, the sort of thing they might deem worthy of being located inside their central ceremonial structure, which opens as the structure is activated. This could’ve served as some sort of initiation to induct certain people into an understanding of redstone engineering - the ritual above opening the doorway and revealing show chambers and shelves that could’ve stored more redstone for these inductees to familiarize themselves with.

    There are many other instances of organic material in the ancient city like the wood and wool on the walls or wool storage, in my opinion it could either be the very cold climate and deep level under the snowy mountains or that pillages came from woodland mansions and also did an archeological expedition, because the wood used in the cities is the same seen in the forests with woodland mansions and the wool storage room looks exactly like the one in the woodland mansions.

    I think the most interesting archeological application of the redstone room is the fact that its creators used a skulk sensor. I am liking this theory!

  • @daan804
    @daan804 3 дні тому +3

    I think we can also assume that:
    1. They were still in the very early stages of research with redstone, as the circuits are bulky, poorly designed and look much like what an old computer looked like ( the ones that filled up multiple rooms like the door also does)
    2. They did not know about the calibrated sculk sensor even though they have sculk sensors and amethyst shards. Using the calibrated sculk sensor could have compacted the circuit by removing the need to check the signal strength with the torch-repeater part.
    Why would they abandon research effords so early on instead of further studying redstone? Well it could be that the research is what made the warden angry so the research or the entire city had to be abandoned.

    • @MC_Oda
      @MC_Oda  3 дні тому +1

      YES! That calibrated sensor would replace that whole front circuit! Well, you'd still have to get a power 8 into it, though to calibrate it. I like your idea that their research upset the warden! Kinda like Icarus and his wings!

    • @daan804
      @daan804 3 дні тому +1

      I liked the theory, but that is really all it is (for now?), as it doesn't have any real evidence backing it up. To me, the lack of calibrated sculk sensor really just indicates that they are in the early stages of research, as they have all the required materials and it could have made the circuit a lot simpler, smaller, more elegant, etc.

    This room has another entrance here on the left.
    It is possible that the hole in the wall and glass you are in is just something that broke with time.
    36:18
    My personal interpretation is that this is not a lab, it is a classroom.
    This is a place to teach how to use redstone.
    The way the circuits are built seem to be to show how it works, not to attempt to discover.
    The fact that this room is ridden seems to indicate that this is secret knowledge and only a few people had the right to learn it.
    Maybe only the priests.
    Possibly as a way to preserve their power by them being the only ones capable of using that kind of "magic".
    38:25

      @@MC_Oda, I saw lots of people calling that space a lab in other videos, so I think it was kinda ingrained in everyone's minds that it was a lab.
      And just like in the last Daskalos' video, he mentioned people taking materials from one building to build another building, there are also cases of people repurposing spaces, and it frequently makes it suboptimal for the new function.
      So the entire room could have been a foundation for the monument, that was used as storage and later had it's function changed receiving adaptations, but those adaptations limited to not compromise the structure.

I could see ender chests not working, since their contents differ for each player. I have used chest and shulkers in circuits before, but I never considered something like a furnace! LOL!

      @ Furnaces are pretty weird, but since they work as redstone transmitters, it can add creations of secret bases with them, such as a certain item being placed to move a crafting table that has a hole underneath. As we speak of furnaces, smokers and blast furnaces also follow this function, though they have a more limited selection of storage. Funnily enough, beehives, bee nests, comparators, and cauldrons also output a signal, but are tested based on how filled they are

      @@Totally_Not_Dupe Yeah totally makes sense! I love the idea of using non-standard blocks to power a hidden circuit. Very sneaky! The popular auto bee farm uses the hive signal strength to know when to activate. Cool stuff! I love that they built these little extra uses into so many blocks!

Also forgot the honorable mention to the Crafter for having the most functions in one type of redstone block, which crafts, receives, stores, hoppers the crafting output (with hoppers underneath it) can be observed, and is a dropper for the crafting output (without hoppers underneath it)

    I’m sure some other redstone gurus could have pointed this out already and I don’t mean to nitpick, but you got the pulse extender functionality wrong. While the comparator WILL maintain signal strength from front to back, each step of redstone dust moved would drop the strength by one. Meaning with a setup like that, one side will always read as an even number and the other will always read as an odd number. There are ways around that to do exactly what you said, but not with that setup. Why pulse extenders work like they do I think was covered in a video MumboJumbo did on how all redstone components worked if I remember correctly.
    Edit: I just noticed, this previous statement only works if both sides have two redstone dust. You are indeed correct about this exact type of pulse extender. Now my comment is really just education on a different type of pulse extender.🤦‍♂️
    Aside from my nitpicking, this is a great video and I love it.
