@@mnemonic1363 oh yeah, no one ever mentions the above comment, sooo underrated. Also, all of the non-lethal wounds recently have been in non-lethal spots, unlike Qui-Gon Jin's wound which goes straight through his spine. Besides, all the other characters either had the dark side (which clearly helps you survive, as seen in Episode 3) or immediate medical attention.
@@Brainth_1780 well... I mean Maul gets his spine cut in half and he survives... but ya as far as anyone was concerned in 1999, maul was dead dead dead
@@josoffat7649 In my head-canon he is very dead. The dude was cut in half and fell for who knows how far to his death, from that height even water feels like concrete if you fall on it. No way that Darth Maul survives that when Qui-gon doesn't survive that stab.
Coby, #1. You're 100% correct, they wanted Leorado Di Caprio to play Ankain when he was older but he was still young, coming off Titanic and didn't want to get involved with a huge franchise. The same reason he turned down Spiderman in the early 2000s. #2. Regarding the fight between the Jedi and Sith -- Darth Maul is a Sith, and powerful, so that's why Obi-Wan and Qigon where having trouble fighting him. An actual Sith, as opposed to a warlord or assassin is extremely well trained and you can think of them essentially dark Jedi. Plus, the Jedi haven't fought the Sith in 1,000 years so they are't used to fighting them.
"Jedi haven't fought the Sith in 1,000 years so they are't used to fighting them." This is mostly true. They just don't have a record of fighting them in 1,000 years because they were killed or kept it quiet.
They moreso struggled because it is a Sith trained by one of the the greatest saber swordsman alive agaisnt a Jedi Master who does not specialize nor likes saber combat and a padawan. Maul was a better swordsman than both Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon in this fight and lost because he underestimated Obi-Wan who Maul just saw as a padawan and he got too cocky at the end when he thought he had basically won the fight.
@@philnicholson7863 "The Queen trusts my judgement, young handmaiden, you should too" is my favourite line regarding that. He knows she's the Queen pretending to be a servant and forces her to either shut up, as a servant has no place to meddle, or reveal she's the queen which he knows she won't.
I appreciate playing Part 2 the same day as Part 1, works great to release them back to back. Great reaction from Coby, looking forward to AOTC and ROTS.
Natalie Portman was 16 during filming of The Phantom Menace, and her character, Padme Amidala, was 14. Jake Lloyd was 9 years old during filming, and his character, Anakin Skywalker, was 9 as well.
Actually, I looked up both their birth years. Jake was born March 5th of 1989, and the movie began filming on June 26, 1997, making him 8 at the time. Natalie was born June 9th of 1981, meaning she had just turned 16 only a few days earlier.
Samuel L. Jackson begged Lucas for a part in one of the Star Wars movies. Even if it was just a corpse on the battlefield. Lucas made him second-in-command to Yoda. Mace Windu. His lightsaber, by request, is purple.
Coby Samuel L Jackson is a hardcore Star Wars' fan. He asked George Lucas if he has a role for Jackson. His role here in this movie is Master Jedi, Mace Windu.
Thanks, Coby! 🌟 You mentioned 'Artoo' and 'Threepio' being on the Death Star at the beginning of EPISODE IV. They're actually on the Tantive IV at the start. It's a corvette which served Senator 'Bail Organa', adopted father of 'Leia'. They don't get to the Death Star 'til later in the film. 🤓
We were all so excited at the time that Lucas had obviously employed proper swordsmen and fight choreographers. I'm sure Neeson and MacGregor appreciated it too. Ray Park is awesome.
The original sword fights in Episodes 4 - 6 were actually a lot more realistic but not nearly as flashy. The prequels fights were heavily choreographed, very exciting, fun to watch and completely unrealistic even for Jedi. Don't get me wrong I prefer the more flashy style of the prequels but proper swordsmen don't fight like that.
The primary reason the duel between Vader and Kenobi in Part IV is so lackluster is the lightsaber props were both heavy and fragile, which made it hard to swing them without breaking them.
The thing about Jar Jar was that George Lucas always thought of the Star Wars movies as movies made made for kids (like the Flash Gordon serials when he was a kid for example). But when The Phantom Menace came out, all of us who were kids when the Originals came out were now in our thirties. So many were as annoyed by the character as you seemed to be which sort of instigated the unwarranted backlash at the time. To George's credit, I do remember the kids under 12 in the theaters cracking up over Jar Jar throughout the whole movie. Also, it lightened the mood for them during some of the more intense scenes. So, when Jar Jar appears, you just have to think - well that part is for kids. At least that is how I always dealt with it!
I watched the Prequels when I was a kid, I think I was about 9 or 10 and I remember I loved Jar Jar. Me and my friends would mimic his funny voice in the playground. George knew what he was doing.
@@jackson857 Jar Jar was 100% created for kids. And in that aspect that character was successful. It's just to bad he couldn't have been cooler. Create a character the kids and adults adore. It is possible. I didn't hate Jar Jar I just found him slightly irritating but honestly didn't give it too much thought. My friends and family however hated him and it was a big reason why they disliked the first movie. I honestly enjoyed all 9 Star Wars movies to some level. The OT was by far the best. The prequels dropped a few notches down and the sequels fell further. If I was to rate all the trilogies I would say 10, 8* & 5. *Revenge of the Sith saved this rating. Episodes 1 & 2 were probable around a 6. Still better then the sequels. Still enjoyable. Not great by any means.
Yeah the prequels were panned when they came out but now they seem to have a new appreciation almost like cult-classics. Qui-Gon as a movie character is a very archetype hero at the time when most movies were more into gritty brooding anti-heroes seeing someone like Qui-Gon Jinn was rare. He was diplomatic thoughtful nurturing and when bad guys attack didn’t hesitate to whip out his lightsaber to fight violence was a last resort to him and always in the defense of others. He was so good that he saves one as annoying as Jar-Jar when others would have left the pathetic life form to his death. And he always humbled telling his apprentice that Obi-Wan was more wise than him. Qui-Gon despite his death was the movie’s true hero. As for Obi-Wan remember he just became a Jedi no Jedi takes an apprentice so early after becoming one themselves but he promised his master he’d do so.
It's all Disney's fault. Because in comparison to their movies the Prequels are considered masterpieces by some people who don't know what they are talking about.
It's funny that you said Jake Lloyd looked like a little Leonardo DiCaprio when he was up to play Anakin in Ep 2 before Hayden Christenson got the role.
Then it's a good thing that Sabine wasn't stabbed through the abdomen, now isn't it? Anybody with even basic observation skills can see that she was stabbed off to the side, away from any major organs. At worst, her liver or one of her kidneys was vaporized. It was hardly a fatal blow.
@@stevenmcmullan409 "at worst, an internal organ was vaporized... hardly a fatal blow." Wow. Impressive. Snide self-righteousness, combined with utter ignorance. How long do you think YOU would survive after being penetrated by a several-thousand-degree plasma "blade?" (Necessary in order to slice through steel or similar metals in real time.) The "vaporization" would destroy almost every cell in the region of your body where this occurred. Firearms don't kill by "making holes," for that matter. The hole is the least significant aspect of a firearm injury. The hydrostatic shock ftom the bullet passing through tissue destroys far, far more tissue than the "hole" does. Force healing?
In Mando season 1, Din was dying and told everyone to leave him behind, and a few minutes later, after having some bacta sprayed in his face, he was good as new.
Fun fact when you said that no one realized Padme was actually Queen Amidala? As he came out that Qui-Gon Jinn knew the entire time and he was purposely messing with her to try to get her to say I am the queen
How was it impossible when Lucas did consider casting DiCaprio? Back in the 90's Leo still had a young appearance similar to Hayden, there wouldn't have been any issue of him portraying Anakin in the Clone Wars.
Anikan risks death in a pod race to help strangers, gets taken away from his mom, goes halfway across the galaxy to another planet and gets grilled by a bunch of powerful aliens. Yoda says, "There is much fear in you." No sh@t, Sherlock! He's 11 years old!
@@thomasbeauchamp3781 Yoda was right at the beginning. Nobody said it was Anakins fault, or he couldn't help people. They said he was to old and his attachment to his mom would be used against him, which it did. There's a reason
@@jessebailey5962 I don't want to ruin Coby's reaction to ROTS. Yoda sets the fate of everyone by not telling Anikan what he needs to learn about his dreams and therefore pushes Anikan towards Palpatine.
@@jessebailey5962 To be fair "bringing balance to the force," when it is currently so heavily weighted towards the light side, should have been the last thing the Jedi wanted.
I mean, he was the chosen one. He did bring balance. Before Darth Vader, there were countless Jedi and two Sith. After Darth Vader, there were both two Sith and two Jedi.
No there weren’t. Vader kills sideous & then dies himself leaving no sith. He’s also killed Obi Wan before that point. When Vader dies there is only Luke left who is a Jedi. Yoda dies on Dagobah at 900 years old. Obviously Disney have gone nuts since then & introduced all kinds of characters who survived order 66 so they can milk the franchise. But canonically; Luke is all that’s left of the Jedi after Episode 6, and the Sith have been destroyed. But the prophecy is correct; after Anakin’s life is over, the only force sensitives left in the galaxy are half lifes of himself; Luke & Leia.
@@dazediss6629 That’s not exactly true. There were still *_countless_* Force sensitives in the galaxy after Vader and The Emperor died, just that none of them were trained/skilled enough to be on the level of Jedi and Sith Masters. Having just two Jedi and two Sith at the end of Revenge of the Sith sounds a lot more like balance than only two Jedi at the end of Return of the Jedi. So in the end, Anakin more effectively served balance as Darth Sidious’s slave than as his first killer.
I don't really see it necessarily being a numbers game between the Jedi and Sith, I kind of interpreted it to refer to the Dark Side of the Force clouding everything and being like a cancer, limiting the Jedi's powers and corrupting them, while allowing the Sith to seize power and turn the entire galaxy to tyranny. Anakin fulfills the prophecy by being instrumental in eliminating the stranglehold the Dark Side has over everything when he killed the Emperor, who was a major impetus for the imbalance between the Dark and the Light. Ultimately the Chosen One acted like a giant reset button for the galaxy far, far away.
@@karlydoche was right about everything. You clearly haven’t understood the movies. Anakin is in fact the chosen one, born from the force to restore balance. The fact that he fights for the light and falls to the dark is all part of the prophecy; because at the end of Episode 6 he is the one who kills Sideous & restores balance as he dies. Qui Gon Jinn is the most force sensitive jedi in the history of the saga. He believes the prophecy and died for it, because he knew that Anakin would kill the Sith. The prophecy didn’t tell anyone that Anakin had to become the Sith to destroy it, but that was etched in stone, we as viewers just didn’t know it at the time.
This is why these movies are best watched in order of release. It has so much more emotion when you know the fully story and so much in heart want the story to change but it will not. Obi and Anakin are amazing characters when story and journey they go on together. While I do love Luke as goat, Obi does have have a special place in heart as second favorite character.
What I've seen is what was called "Machete Order", which is starting with IV and V, then continuing with I, II, and III, and finally concluding with VI. That way, 1. the main points of IV and V aren't spoiled, and 2. the ending (VI) still happens at the end. There is precedence in a similar sequence in the Chronicles Of Narnia books.
@@flynnoldman3542 Significantly more enjoyable because that is how these stories were written and many great movies going in reverse order are extremely popular when done right. This was never a story meant to be seen as some great mystery, it was always about the setting and theme being brought to life more than anything. Are you really surprised that in Titanic nearly everyone drowns to death? No and big reason people saw movie wasn't because they wanted to know what happens in the end. They wanted to see what this event might have looked like coming to life on the big screen.
@@Hammster69official The big issue I find is what age of person is, the younger they are harder it is to revert back from newer to older. Star Wars was a blockbuster cinema that blew people's mind in same way Oppenheimer did or maybe Avatar years earlier. It is obviously very old and dated now relying on acting and story telling to carry it but a core component is always special effects and setting. When people watch the prequels first they are often disappointed in my experience when they watch original trilogy after because you can see the stark contrast in tech. Its very similar as a gamer that loved God of War 1 as game and still fun but most modern gamers given choice of Ragnarök its not hard to understand why the newer is much more appealing and can be a let down if decide to play the original game after beating Ragnarök.
As someone who saw the originals in the theater as a kid and loved the prequels as an adult, I much prefer watching them chronological. It makes the whole story so much better. I saw one reactor who watched them in chronological order and it was so fun to see the emotions from the ups and downs of the drama unfolding.
@@porkins74 Anakin just needed someone to help him channel his feelings and that person was Qui Gon who was the last ‘true’ Jedi until Luke came along. The Jedi of this era had lost their way, they chose to follow the will of the senate instead of the force. Also attachments aren’t a bad thing, the answer is to balance them with one’s duties.
I remember being at the midnight screening of The Phantom Menace in 1999. The audience was electric- someone even brought a beach ball into the theatre.
Qui Gon can’t kill Watto because that’s illegal and he’s not a murderer. And he’d be doing so outside Republic jurisdiction, which could cause a conflict with the Hutts, which the Republic would not be happy about. Dark siders could wield sabers that aren’t red, but they typically go with red. Did you notice the other of yoda’s species on the jedi council? A female named Yaddle. This is one of the few times we see her. The shields only absorb or deflect things going at high speed. Slow moving things can get through. It’s taken from Dune. “A double saber doesn’t seem fair” You do remember Maul’s a bad guy, right? Remember the jedi thought the sith were extinct for a millenia. They’ve rarely if ever faced someone with their skillset that’s also trying to kill them They were fighting in a power plant. The laser gates that separated them go on and off to hold back potentially dangerous quantities of power outputs. “He’s definitely a liability” She says as his actions take down tanks. Although yes, he is sometimes. Ahmed wasn’t just directed the way Jar Jar was written, he put in a lot of effort and even had some input. He was very proud of his work as Jar Jar “I don’t trust [Palpatine]” Well yeah, he’s a politician. They’re not to be trusted. He was definitely acting sus whispering in Padme’s ear For a long time the prequels were largely disliked, but they’ve gotten so much more appreciation over the years, especially from fans that grew up with them. Btw, Padmé’s decoy was played by Kiera Knightley
Dark Siders don't choose red Sabers as an aesthetic or a choice. Dark Side sabers are red because they are forced to use synthetic Kyber Crystals due to the Jedi having control of all of the natural ones. Synthetic Kyber Crystals give off a red glow. It isn't the high speed that the shields react to it is energy, the higher the kinetic energy the higher the feedback resistance. Walking through is low kinetic energy, but if you noticed they still faced some resistance. I don't think that the PT has gained "so much more appreciation over the years", since the flaws are unchanged; it is more that they just aren't nearly as bad as the ST and the rest of Disney Star Wars, so they seem better in comparison.
@@Agtsmirnoff If you see things as black and white then yes it is immoral, but there's a massive difference between manipulating the odds to do what you think is right and killing an innocent being to get your own way.
I think it's more the shields can deflect energy weapons but not solid matter. It was the same issue with the Death Star. The Death Star had shields, but the rebel fighters were able to pass through it.
Your reaction to this movie made me kinda emotional. It was nice to see you really truly enjoy this movie and be thrilled by it. It really is a good movie. Most fans wanted Anakin to be a little older in the first film, but you seemed to understand George's vision better than most of us. I think I was 16 when this movie came out. I saw it in the theater 5 times!
Back in 2000 there was a rumor that Leonardo would play Anakin in episode 2. Leonardo is a huge Star Wars fan. He rented a full theater for himself to bring a girl to see a Star Wars movie with him. He also did visit the Skywalker ranch to see The Phantom Menace on the Lucasfilm screen. But from what I remember reading recently he was not in the run for the role of Anakin (at least not confirmed). Some actors (like Gary Oldman) were not allowed to play in Star Wars because of the actor guild rules that Lucas was not member of or something.
Supreme Chancellor Valorum is portrayed by Terence Stamp (General Zod in Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980)) Yoda is 864 years old in this film. Boss Nass, the leader of the Gungans is portrayed by Brian Blessed (Prince Vultan in “Flash Gordon” (1980) and the voice of Clayton in Disney’s “Tarzan” (1999) Funnily enough, Leonardo DiCaprio was offered the role of Anakin for the next 2 prequels, but he turned it down because he “…didn’t feel ready.” Other actors who auditioned for the role of older Anakin included Christian Bale, Ryan Phillippe, James Van Der Beek, Joshua Jackson, Eric Christian Olsen, Erik von Detten, and Chris Klein, though the role eventually went to Hayden Christiansen.
14:17 I have to say, Coby, your talent for observation has impressed me _very_ much. When I saw this movie, it was in the theater and I didn't pick up on the switches that were taking place between Natalie Portman and Keira Knightly until _this_ moment.
Soo, I apologize if someone has already commented or alluded to this: Fun Fact about the song playing during Qui-gon and Obi-wan's duel with Maul; "Duel of the Fates". Its meant to allude to the fact that the three of them are dueling for the fate of Anakin's future. Should Maul kill Qui-gon and Obi-wan, Anakin would not be trained (or suffer a similarly worse fate). Had Qui-gon lived; he would have guided Anakin through his training of the force properly; providing him not only the teacher he needed, but a solid father figure as well. Though Maul is defeated, Qui-gon falls as well, thus forcing Obi-wan, who didnt believe in Anakin as Qui-gon did (and who lacked Qui-gon's more flexible view of the force) to train him. He still intended do his best, because he trusted Qui-gon, but it made Anakin's future more unstable and open to other influences.
People continue not to realize when Qui-Gon says "Train him , he is the one that will bring balance" to Obi-Wan, in the end,he does bring balance by killing the Emperor to save his son...So the Prophecy was true. (To Quote Obi-Wan: From a certain point of view)
Very nice spin. To bad it took millions of lives lost to get to that point. I give Luke the credit more then Anakin. But I'm betting you and I won't agree.
@@Fairburne69 You are right that Luke takes a lot of the credit to reach the point they reached, but if Anakin is not trained to be a Jedi, and if Anakin does not leave with Qui-Gon and Obi-Won, he does not end up having a relationship with Amidala, then there is no Luke, while Darth Sidious still takes over, but with nobody to ever kill him. Finally the biggest fact, if not for there still being good in Anakin, Luke ends up dying at the hands of the Emperor, like it or not it's a fact it's Anakin not Luke that kills Ol' Sid. By the way, my favorite character in Star Wars is Luke, so I am not saying that because I favor Anakin more than Luke, just stating a fact that I am sure Lucus meant to be the biggest fact if you thought about it. Now you can agree or disagree with that fact, up to you, it still does not change it.
@@tiye65 I'm not sure that Anakin _does_ bring "balance" to the Force by killing the Emperor. After that point, and Anakin's own death moments later, there were no Sith left (at least for a generation or so). All that existed were those with Jedi powers, ie Luke and Leia. Surely, that then gives the Force an _imbalance_ of light versus dark. For the Force to have _true_ balance, it requires an equal number of light and dark, surely?
@@weescotspaul Again, if Anakin does not meet with Amidala, no Luke and Leia. No Anakin remembering who he used to be, and kills Palpatine, there is no Luke, No Luke, no more Jedi to kill Palpatine or train Leia. There was peace for a good amount of time (Peace will not continue forever) because of what Anakin did. Tough to take in but nothing became more important to finally bringing peace then what Anakin did, tough to want to believe, but he died a hero, and did bring balance in the end.
The prequels were intended to be Anakin's back story, so that's why they introduced some of the familiar characters. The Clone Wars animated series, covers events between 2 and 3, and really focuses on additional reasons Anakin turned away from the Jedi Order. I really appreciate your reaction to this, it was easy to see you were invested in the story.
When Padme reveals herself as the Queen before the Gungans, you can tell on Qui-gon's (Liam Neeson's) face that he knew the whole time and was just playing it cool.
I love love love your reactions, Coby. You’re very laidback. You’re very intelligent. You’ve got a sense of humor. But it kinda killed me a little inside that you were kinda half paying attention during one of the best-choreographed lightsaber scenes. Obi vs Maul is crazy fast paced and so well executed as well. The special DVD featurette that showed Ewan and Ray practicing the choreography was always so impressive to me. They did that shit for real. And it was the benchmark for how I would measure all future lightsaber fights. And it’s still one of the best single sequences. Worth going back to revisit on UA-cam.
Yoda: "Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering." Also Yoda: "The chosen one the boy may be. Nevertheless, grave danger I fear in his training."
One of my favourite things about this film is of course the light saber fight with Maul. But within that, the great musical score, The Duel of Fates. Not only does it sound great, but the "Fate" is Anakin Skywalker. Qui Gon wasn't wrong about Anakin's potential when the others could only see fear in boy. The reason he could see a great future for Anakin and the other Jedi's couldn't is because Qui Gon would've had a huge role to play in his future...he knew he could help him where the other Jedi's couldn't. Qui Gon would've been the father figure he needed. But because he lost, Anakin's fate was sealed...hence "Duel of The Fates".

I don't know if someone covered this but the kid who played Anakin is Jake Lloyd. He also played the kid in Jingle All The Way with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Loved watching you see this! Brought the magic back to my first viewing!
I nominate 'What will happen to me now?' as the saddest line. The answer to that question - "You REALLY don't want to know, because it's so ugly and tragic. But, you DO end with your mission fulfilled, and are rewarded in the Afterlife" ...while true, is not something that someone with compassion would want to tell a little kid.
Palpatine's/The Emperor's theme actually plays at the end during the celebration. The "celebration" music is a re-done faster version of the Emperor's theme. He is the real "phantom" menace. Vader's theme/the Imperial March also played when Yoda said "grave danger I fear in his training".
One thing that ALWAYS amazes me about Coby is how much she picks up in movies and how many times her predictions end up being correct. Things I missed as a fan, she gets. Impressive....most Impressive.
There's a deleted scene from just after the podrace with little Anakin fighting little Greedo. Greedo's on the ground with Anakin basically sitting on him and hitting him. I love the idea of that, showing Anakin to be not just a cute, sweet, always happy and positive little kid. But I also kind of get why they cut it.
I saw this in theaters when is came out. Many Star Wars "Fans" hated it. I did not like Jar Jar Binks either and I think Jake Lloyd did a good job playing child Anakin. But fans were mean to both Jake and Ahmad Best (Jar Jar), so they disappeared for a while. Ahmed came back to Star Wars and was redeemed. Great reaction Coby, loved the fact you got to see all characters again that you already knew. And..... we now get to see the characters build and grow on the next movie ❤

Not only Jar jar Binks was hated but also the actor who played him. After 2 decades he was redeemed playing a Jedi in The Mandalorian tv show and his character did something that made him loved.
I think this film is a lot better than it was received. Unfortunately for Jake Lloyd (Ani) he got a lot of criticism and hate for his work but I actually think he did great for what he had to work with. He also appeared in an episode of ER but not sure after that. He later had various drink and drug problems and was arrested a bunch of times. Really sad.
Kudos to you for wanting to watch the prequels. They’re still entertaining and informative. Even though I know that it’s Kiera Knightly as the decoy, I still can’t see it to this day. But I can make out Natalie Portman when she’s the queen. Keep up the fun and entertaining reactions.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Darth Maul: *gets cut in half...* George Lucas: "Just hear me out..." Boba Fett: *eaten by a sarlacc...* EU Authors: "but what if..." Palpatine: *blown to bits* Tom Veitch: "so, I've got a story called Dark Empire..." Pretending like this stuff is a Disney invention is revisionist and just plain incorrect.
This was my first STAR WARS film I watched in theatres. It blew my mind. Jar-Jar worked for me. The hate came from older STAR WARS fans, who found Jar-Jar whatever. Also, the kid actor for Anakin got a lot of hate. I don’t know why, because he did a fantastic job. All in all this film is in my top 3 of STAR WARS films. Can’t wait for the next two.
Anakin is the chosen one/ He brought balance to the force as being a Jedi for the light, they Sith for Dark. Then when his son a Jedi for the light needed him, he chose to turn to light and destroy one of the most powerful Darkside users in Star Wars history bringing balance. This is what the Force created him for.
Sort of, but not really. The Force created Ani as a reaction to Darth Plagueis' attempts to create life, master life, and cheat death; not so much a specific purpose. So in a round about way you are correct in the sense that Plagueis was Darth Sidious' Master and mentor, so killing Sidious ended the Plagueis line.
One advantage people new to Star Wars has today is, you don't have to wait 3 years between movies or 10-16 years between trilogies like my generation did starting in 1977.
Many people believe that the prophecy of the Chosen One does not refer to Anakin, but to Luke, and Qui-Gon was wrong. Anakin was really the chosen one, but the Jedi misinterpreted the prophecy. Anakin wiped out the weakened and decadent Jedi Order, and finally finished off the Sith as well. THAT is how he brought balance to the Force.
Pretty intuitive reaction Coby. Good job! Fun fact, Keira Knightly and Natalie Portman's mothers couldn't tell them apart on set when they were in full makeup.
Jake Lloyd played 9 yr old Anakin. His last acting role was filmed in 2000. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending how u look at it, in 2008 he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He has not been seen publicly since 2015. In 2016, he was admitted to a psychiatric facility.
After watching the next two films, I recommend watching the animated and live action shows. Palpatine/Sidious is a Sith Lord, while Maul is his apprentice/bodyguard. Maul is physically portrayed by martial artist/stuntman Ray Park and voiced by Peter Serafinowizc. In case you missed it, there was a female version of Yoda on the Jedi council named Master Yaddle
Maybe he'll still get to be in Star Wars, though. I mean, one particular actor has been on the wishlist for fans to see in the Star Wars universe, and it finally happened, so maybe DiCaprio will get his chance?
Coby has the reactions that I'm sure George Lucas dreamed about for his audience. Especially at 4:55 when she realizes "He kills him! He kills Obi-Wan!" We will watch the rest of this series with great interest.
It's absolutely crazy that Coby has never watched or knows much about the Star Wars prequels. Her assumptions for the movie were very much correct throughout. Her insight serves her well. I think that (a rumour I once heard) George Lucas did want and was in talks with Leonardo DiCaprio to portray an older Anakin Skywalker. So that assumption of hers is freaky and honestly too coincidental. If this were Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692, I'd 100% accuse her.
For reference, Anakin and Padme's age difference in this is 5 years as most of us know. This will be important for Coby in the next movie. Love seeing people have appreciation for seeing the prequels so many years later especially with the drop in quality with most of the Disney Star Wars projects.
I'm sure someone has addressed it in here but the duel between Darth Maul and Qui-Gon Jin is referred to as the "duel of fates", dictating that whoever won would have decided Anakin's fate. Qui-Gon himself didn't always believe in everything the Jedi Council preached and operated a little more in the grey than most Jedi. Had he survived his fight with Maul, he would have taken Anakin as his apprentice regardless if the Jedi Council approved or not. He also would have represented the father figure that Anakin never had and realized that Anakin needed to be trained differently due to his power and what he has already experienced. However, with the death of Qui-Gon, instead Obi Wan ends up as his Jedi teacher and is more of a big brother try to get him to conform to the black and white teachings of the Jedi. No spoilers, just realized that everything that happens on the road to him becoming Vader can be directly tied to this moment. The moment that Qui-Gon dies and he loses the only teacher that could have saved him.
The shields work depending on the velocity of the object trying to penetrate it. Like blaster and cannon fire won’t get through but an individual walking through it can. Yes… I’m a Star Wars geek😁
I always love watching Coby's reactions. She is amazing! 🙂 Anyway, let me throw something out here about Jar Jar Binks. I had no problem at all with him - especially after I saw a detailed theory video on the Lockstin & Gnoggin channel called "Fact: The Star Wars are ALL Jar Jar’s Fault!" Ah, George Lucas - what could have been if he had stuck with his plan, instead of caving in to the backlash. But then again, maybe he overestimated attention spans of movie audiences at the time. I recommend watching this video *after* Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. It's ~48min long, but I found it worth it. Key points: 1. George Lucas was influenced by a number of fighting styles in martial arts movies - the one relevant to this topic being "drunken fist wu-shu". 2. A major character appears seemingly out of nowhere in the next Episode II: Attack Of The Clones. 3. Jar Jar Binks (voiced by Ahmed Best) is CGI, which means Every. Little. Move. He. Makes. Must. Be. Programmed - in particular, some key hand waving moments. Remember that for this film. 😁 Enjoy!
The music playing during the fight between Qui-Gon and Darth Maul is called Duel of the Fates. It's very aptly named since this fight may very well be what decided Anakin's fate. Qui-Gon would have been the father figure Anakin needed.
Keira Knightley played the decoy. FWIW, the original SW films made stars out of its 3 primary characters along w/ bringing in a few established stars like Alec Guinness, Peter Cushing & Billy Dee Williams. Unlike the originals, the prequels had a bunch of people (like Knightley) do bit parts [credited or not] who would eventually become stars in their own right . They also had cameos by those who worked behind the scenes & relatives of others SW actors or friends of George Lucas.
As Ben would say: "Your insight serves you well", Coby. Leonardo was definitely approached for the sequels. (Even I ventured to Hollywood to try my luck, because little Anakin looked a lot like young me, and I was the right age, but was only shown the door ... never even made it to audition). P.S.: I loved your Morla impression!
3:27 the composition of this scene is super good. She stands in the shadows and he has to turn his back on her and move towards the light that is juxtaposed by shadows in the frame.
Not at first. At this point he isn't he's average yet crafty, but during the clone wars after a couple defeats he realizes he needs to step up his game and then he becomes a true master of the defensive form...forget the name. Basically making him one of the most skilled duelists of his time.
@@MrBottlecapBill It might have been lost in the Disney / EU purge but I definitely remember reading a novel where he was described as pretty top of his class and winning a few tournaments, which would make sense - his mentorship lineage in Qui-Gon > Dooku > Yoda includes most of the best swordsmen/creatures in the Order (Windu being the exception) so it would stand to reason he was definitely above average for his age. But you're certainly right about his approach around the Clone Wars and adopting / mastering the defensive form, which ended up being the reason he could best Anakin.

"Jedi haven't fought the Sith in 1,000 years so they are't used to fighting them."
This is mostly true.

Natalie Portman was 16 during filming of The Phantom Menace, and her character, Padme Amidala, was 14. Jake Lloyd was 9 years old during filming, and his character, Anakin Skywalker, was 9 as well.

100% Agree
JarJar for kids and trade disputes over taxation for the adult audiences.
I watched the Prequels when I was a kid, I think I was about 9 or 10 and I remember I loved Jar Jar. Me and my friends would mimic his funny voice in the playground. George knew what he was doing.

@@fightingchicken2009 I don’t blame ya. We all gotta find our own Colby’s in life lol
"pathetic life form." 😂😂😂 Ouch!
I agree with Coby, you absolutely do not come back from being stabbed in the abdomen by a lightsaber...
Yep, and any story which claims otherwise is merely bad fan-fic. Even if Disney claims otherwise.
@@stevenmcmullan409 "at worst, an internal organ was vaporized... hardly a fatal blow."

How long do you think YOU would survive after being penetrated by a several-thousand-degree plasma "blade?" (Necessary in order to slice through steel or similar metals in real time.)
The "vaporization" would destroy almost every cell in the region of your body where this occurred.
Firearms don't kill by "making holes," for that matter. The hole is the least significant aspect of a firearm injury. The hydrostatic shock ftom the bullet passing through tissue destroys far, far more tissue than the "hole" does.

That's not what balance means, George Lucas had been pretty clear on what balance means.

Really? Knowing the ending before hand makes the story more enjoyable? To each there own i guess.

Finally the biggest fact, if not for there still being good in Anakin, Luke ends up dying at the hands of the Emperor, like it or not
it's a fact it's Anakin not Luke that kills Ol' Sid.
By the way, my favorite character in Star Wars is Luke, so I am not saying that because I favor Anakin more than Luke, just stating a fact that I am sure Lucus meant to be the biggest fact if you thought about it. Now you can agree or disagree with that fact, up to you, it still does not change it.

And it was the benchmark for how I would measure all future lightsaber fights. And it’s still one of the best single sequences. Worth going back to revisit on UA-cam.
Ben Kenobi is a Padawan in training to become a Jedi.
When he becomes a full Jedi, Qui-Gon will cut his braid off.
Qui-gon is definitely not cutting it off.
A Padawan is a Jedi. Obi-wan was in training to become a Jedi Knight.
@@DeepDeepSpace Whatever.
I don't know if he went by the name Ben back then. I just assumed he used it as an alias later on, to hide his true identity.
Yoda: "Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering."
Also Yoda: "The chosen one the boy may be.
Queen Amidala's ship looks like it was modeled on the SR-71 spyplane.
The Lovechild of an SR 71 and an Airstream Trailer.
It's actually fun to see someone's reaction to my favorite movies. You doa great job of not inserting yourself too much into the movie but also your fedback and commentary is funny, witty ans sometimes silly but great stuff. I feel like I watched some of these movies for the first time all over again!
He does bring balance to the force in his last moments.
At least until JJ Abrams gets his hands on the franchise
@@chard2534 What do you mean? There are only 6 Star Wars movies.
@@bartUsiek10 😂
@@chard2534 I saw there were movies labelled "Episode VII", "Episode VIII", and "Episode IX". However, I have yet to figure out what they have to do with Star Wars.
@@bartUsiek10 That's right - George Lucas himself said the whole point of the Star Wars was the Rise (I, II, III), Fall (III, IV, V), and Redemption (VI) of Anakin Skywalker.
Great reaction, I hope y'all put these out pretty close together. It was fun watching you enjoy this.
I don't know if someone covered this but the kid who played Anakin is Jake Lloyd. He also played the kid in Jingle All The Way with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Loved watching you see this! Brought the magic back to my first viewing!
28:14 That's the actor Ralph Brown who played "Danny" in one of the most quotable British films from 1987 "Withnail & I"
I nominate 'Will I ever see you again?' as the saddest Staar Wars quote. Even tugged at my heartstrings in the trailer when it came out.
@@tranya327 only if the question is code for 'reveal the rest of my story, now.
Palpatine's/The Emperor's theme actually plays at the end during the celebration. The "celebration" music is a re-done faster version of the Emperor's theme. He is the real "phantom" menace. Vader's theme/the Imperial March also played when Yoda said "grave danger I fear in his training".
Great reaction Coby to a good star wars movie was hated when it first came out but has got more love over the years
One thing that ALWAYS amazes me about Coby is how much she picks up in movies and how many times her predictions end up being correct. Things I missed as a fan, she gets. Impressive....most Impressive.
The Skywalkers, R2, and ships. Like father, like son...
Anakin blew up the Death Star
There's a deleted scene from just after the podrace with little Anakin fighting little Greedo. Greedo's on the ground with Anakin basically sitting on him and hitting him. I love the idea of that, showing Anakin to be not just a cute, sweet, always happy and positive little kid.
But I also kind of get why they cut it.
Anakin : So I am not a slave anymore? Yupeeee!
Qui-gon : No Anakin, you're free. Now call me master!!!!
I just discovers you and I love your reactions cant wait to see more
This was the first reaction of yours that I saw. It was so fun to watch your eyes as you fully take in the movie. You thoroughly found joy in the movie which made it so much fun to watch with you.
22:55 your insight serves you well. 25:38
Enjoyed your reaction. Looking forward to the next one.
Chancellor Valorum played by Terence Stamp (the adventures of priscilla, queen of the desert, general zod in superman 1-2, the collector).
Props to you for sussing out the Amidala decoy thing, and pretty quickly. The decoy is Keira Knightley. It's worth noting that their mom's were on set when both were in makeup, and they couldn't tell the difference...
Maul's face is actually tattooed
Great reaction Coby, loved the fact you got to see all characters again that you already knew. And..... we now get to see the characters build and grow on the next movie ❤
One little note, dear Coby: "Jedi" is both the singular and the plural. Adding an "s" at the end (for several Jedi) is redundant. ☝🙂
Happy birthday to you! 🎂🎉🍾
Now let's talk about Lego!!
@@halfvader8015 😅
New sub here. Love how Coby is so invested in movie watching and reacts with emotions rather than over analyze and being too technical. I haven't seen the other reactors on this channel but it seems like Coby is the favorite? Thanks for the reaction and sharing your channel.👍🏾
Thank you for releasing the videos back to back
Qui-Gon gets stabbed.....
Coby: "That it. You don't come back from that."
Disney-SW: "Hold our beer."
Darth Maul: *gets cut in half...*
George Lucas: "Just hear me out..."
Boba Fett: *eaten by a sarlacc...*
EU Authors: "but what if..."
Palpatine: *blown to bits*
Tom Veitch: "so, I've got a story called Dark Empire..."
Pretending like this stuff is a Disney invention is revisionist and just plain incorrect.
I’m teaching my 15 y/o to drive, it’s stressful - but compared to the SW universe, to teach someone so young to FLY - 😮 Unfathomable!
Highly recommend Weird Al The Saga Begins...
I completely forgot to mention that!
Now that the lyrics will make sense, that's a great idea.
Now that was a reaction! Your enthusiasm for this is great and I can’t wait too see the others.
Anakin to Obi-Wan: “You’re a Jedi too? Pleased to meet you!”
Later Anakin: exterminates the jedi
And surely being bullied in school or harassed on social media haven't played a part in ruining his life either. I really feel bad for him.
Also, if you notice, Luke’s lightsaber is green just like Qui-Gon’s. That played a part in Vader’s change in Return of the Jedi.
"What are these walls and why?" The plot demands it.
So enjoyable to watch someone look at these movies with such energy and enjoyment. Oh, yeah, "Small Maul"...I cannot now ever unhear that. Thank you.
“Yoda looking much younger ….. fresh-faced, comparatively ….. still old, but ….. “
Yes, Yoda is a spry 864 yrs old during this time.
Didn't they go back and redo Yoda digitally. IN EP 1 The original Yoda was a puppet and was god awful ugly.
Hopefully she reacts to "The Old Republic Cinematic Trailers" eventually. Those are fantastic bits of Star Wars media.
Leo is a pretty diehard SW fan and Lucas made him the offer to play Anakin in the next movie, but... well, you'll see. Great video as always!
He kills Obi-Wan!"
We will watch the rest of this series with great interest.
Anyway, let me throw something out here about Jar Jar Binks. Key points:
Enjoy!
DiCaprio told ShortList in 2015 that George Lucas offered him the role of Anakin, but he turned it down.
great reaction! you are going to love episode 2.
3:27 the composition of this scene is super good. She stands in the shadows and he has to turn his back on her and move towards the light that is juxtaposed by shadows in the frame.
If I'm not mistaken, the lore considers Obi Wan to be a premiere light saber duelist.
Not at first. At this point he isn't he's average yet crafty, but during the clone wars after a couple defeats he realizes he needs to step up his game and then he becomes a true master of the defensive form...forget the name. Basically making him one of the most skilled duelists of his time.
@@MrBottlecapBill Yep, I agree, I would point out though that he bested Darth Maul when he was a padawan...
