    I didn’t see a comment about it but, the Joker doesn’t know who Batman is. He just knows there’s a relationship between Batman and Rachel. That’s why he switched the address because he knew whoever Batman is, cared for Rachel enough to give him a dilemma of saving someone he loved or saving Dent which is supposed to be the good choice.

    • @carl_anderson9315
      @carl_anderson9315 Місяць тому +48

If Dent became a criminal, then all of his cases would thrown out, releasing them all. The fact that he knew their was something between Rachael and Batman was just a bonus, their was no dilemma and their was never a choice. Joker was gonna make sure Dent survived.

      @ you’re just stating what happened in the movie. The Joker had multiple plans if one aspect of his failed, which some did in the movie. Killing Dent in the penthouse party failed and so did him trying to assassinate the mayor. Him switching the addresses just makes sure he wins plus the added bonus of giving Batman psychological damage from his choices in hopes he would break. If Rachel lives and Dent dies then Batman failed in giving Gotham its best hope, if Dent lives and Rachel dies then we get what happened in the movie.

      The joker didn't necessarily give him reverse information he gave him a choice to make and Bruce chose incorrectly which makes Bruce/Batman also corrupted in this case his corruption would be being biased. had he chose the correct person to save which was Harvey dent he would have actually saved Rachel without realizing it that was the entire point of why joker gave him this so called reverse information . So many people miss that in the movie . At which point batman would say "none of those origins are really yours" and the joker always replied "when it comes to origin stories, I prefer it to be multiple choice".

      @StoneColdBeard Winter Soldier is also a masterpiece and more impressive than The Dark Knight IMO. Even Civil War was very good. I mean, main characters such as Iron Man and War Machine had scenes in which it seemed like they might actually die. I experienced dread watching things play out.
      The Dark Knight is well made, but it's basically about a villain who just wants chaos for no real reason. I think the Marvel movies actually have better motivations for the conflicts in their movies. I think War Machine had to shut down the Avengers because they were causing too much collateral damage or something. He almost killed Iron Man or something like that. It was a bit terrifying to watch.
      I disagree that the Marvel movies are just an expensive episodic TV show that played in theaters. What Marvel accomplished is seriously impressive with many good/great movies and a very good connected universe.

    • @StoneColdBeard
      @StoneColdBeard Місяць тому +7

      @@darrel7589 it’s about a lot more than a villain who wants chaos. It’s about the philosophical dilemma of Determinism vs inter-determinism. Joker being a catalyst for chaos and Harvey being the justice for humans actions. It’s also a deep allegory on capitalism and how we feel safe until we are introduced to anarchism. It’s a huge play on morality and the choices we are forced to make. Even Batman was forced to make a decision, he didn’t believe in killing anyone, yet he was faced with his choice to save Gordon’s son and kill Harvey. All three men were faced with a dilemma on the roof. Harvey realized why the Joker chose him, and how he was a pawn. He decides to continue on his path because facing the truth was too much for him. Gordon realized his actions as a police officer have consequences on others. Gordon was a Machiavellian “ends justify the means” cop. Until that moment. Ironically, Batman adopts this philosophy to save Gotham. Gordon says “No you’re not.” And Batman replies “I’m whatever Gotham needs me to be.” They cover up Harvey’s murders using this philosophy. Which will come back to haunt them in the next film. Because Truth is real Justice.
      Also, it’s a one off film inside a trilogy. You don’t have to see Batman Begins or TDKR to understand this film. Anyone can go into it blindly and understand the story. With the MCU, you have to see other films to understand the plot and grasp the emotional connection with the characters. This film builds it in one movie.

If he takes that step, no matter how justified the murder is, he'll never recover, because it'll be that much easier for him to justify another one, and another one, etc. That's also why comic Batman never would have let Ra's Al Ghul die like Bruce did in the first movie. If he consciously chooses to let someone die, it'll be that much easier to do it again and again until it gets to the point where he'll start killing because the person was going to die anyway.

      In Batman Begins, he said, "I can't kill you, but that doesn't mean I have to save you". The whole concept of "heroes don't kill" comes from the old Comics Code. Comic book superheroes were not allowed to kill. Someone might die as an indirect result of a hero's actions, but they couldn't deliberately kill someone. That Code didn't last long, though.

    Great reaction Coby like always, this movie is so good. Ledger absolutely OWNED that role. He was incredibly unhinged. Seeing this in theaters was so amazing. One of the best films ever. It just is unrelenting. Heath Ledger asked to direct and film the fake Batman hostage video. He improvised the entire dialog. During the Batman/Joker interagation Heath told Christian Bale to actually hit him.
    And another fun-fact about that mid-movie scene with the Joker crashing the party: that was the first time Maggie Gyllenhaal and Michael Caine saw Heath in his makep. The makeup, combined with his unhinged behavior, elicited truly panicked reactions. Go back and watch Maggie... she is kegitimately freaked out and not acting.
    And in the hospital scene between Harvey and Joker Because he's a master manipulator. He knew that there was a 50/50 chance that Dent would pull the trigger especially in his current mental state. He wanted to mess with him. The joker may not care much about his life but he wouldn't want Harvey to be the one to kill him. He wanted batman to have that honour. This is the brilliance of the Joker. The illusion of choice. He gives Dent the option to him right then and there, to end the madness or join it´s ranks. The choice is simple, because there isn´t one. If you look closely at the Joker´s finger he is holding the gun hammer, even if dent pulled the trigger, the hammer wouldn´t fall. Keep up the good work.

    • @LucianDevine
      @LucianDevine Місяць тому +2

      Michael Caine was even supposed to have a line in that scene, but the sight of Heath in full makeup made him forget his line!
      As for the scene with Dent and Joker, I'm torn. I genuinely feel like Joker would let himself die if that's how the coin landed. If he doesn't, then his manipulation might not stick. Chaos can't be fair if you don't follow the rules. So if it comes up black, and he doesn't let Dent kill him, why would he keep following the coin? The only way for the manipulation to stick, is for it to come up white, and have Dent, who truly wants to kill Joker, follow the coin and spare him. That's the push that sent Dent on his way. So whether Joker lives or dies there, his job is done. Harvey gets corrupted, goes on his killing spree, the mobsters get freed, the town loses hope, etc.

The end building and swap of the hostages and clowns is a perfect example. He intentionally picks a building with so many windows, intentionally puts the clown hostages in front of them, knowing what Gordon will do, all while giving the real bad guys guns so that they can ambush the cops when they come to "save" them.

    There’s many comments here talking about Batman doesn’t kill, but glossing over the reason given in Batman Begins.
    Bruce was going to kill his parents’ murderer, and when he made Rachel aware of it she slapped him twice in disgust, and declared that his father would be ashamed of him.
    That resonated with Bruce, and it became part of his makeup. Ras Al Gul wanted him to be an executioner as his final test and wouldn’t do it.
    The comics may have a different setup, but in these movies, that’s the reason why Bruce won’t kill, and even eschews guns (at least the hand held varieties).

    The Joker doesn't know Bruce is Bstman. He knows Batman cares about Rachel because he jumped out a window to save her.
    And as others have said, the Joker lied. Bruce thought he was saving Rachel.

    30:26 Well in the comics there is a "definitive" origin for the Joker, though take it with a grain of salt since it comes from the character himself. The truth is left open to interpretation.
    In Detective Comics #168 (1951), Red Hood debuted, a criminal who fled to Ace Chemicals after a failed heist at the Monarch Playing Card Company. Chased by Batman he jumps into a vat of chemicals, emerging with bleached skin and green hair, becoming the Joker. Batman: The Killing Joke (1988) expanded on this, portraying the Red Hood as a mantle forced upon various individuals by the mob. In this version, a struggling comedian named Jack took on the role to support his pregnant wife, Jeannie. However, after a robbery at his workplace, went wrong, Ace Chemicals. He fell into the chemicals, transforming into the Joker. Though Joker states Batman 'throw' him into the chemicals.
    "If I'm Going To Have A Past, I Prefer It To Be Multiple Choice! HA HA HA!" - Joker (The Killing Joke)

      For me the best theory is: Joker was in Military and his convoi exploded, thats why he got the scars and is a weapons expert. He was also specialized for Interrogations. Thats why he said "never start with the head".
      And thats also why he is good in psychology. He told the mob boss that his father was abusive maybe because most percentage of criminals had an abusive or a passiv father. To rachel he told the story about the love to his wife i dont know why maybe because this story fits more to tell a woman. Now i know that joker could not have know that but he said to rachel that he didn't care about the scars of his wife. And i find this interesting because rachel is in conflict on who to choose: Batman (has scars) or Harvey dent (later has scars)

    Joker didn't know it was Bruce, he just noticed that Batman loved Rachel. He could probably put it together based on them being childhood friends and also a Wayne employee knowing who Batman was later though.

    I never caught that Gordon was the driver of the van! Great catch
    So much of this movie was done practically, seeing the behind the scenes of them flipping the 18 wheeler in between the skyscrapers was amazing

    Just as Joker lied about who was at the addresses, he also most likely lied about the boat detonators "With the Joker, nothing is as it seems" The experiment wasnt about who deserved to be saved the criminals or the innocent, but whoever actually pulled the trigger would have proven his point. The likelihood of the boat with the civilians actually doing the deed was higher so that would have been "fun" for the Joker seeing them blow themselves up.

    The use of MCU in this film refers to Major Crimes Unit
    Fun Fact: When the joker shows up at the Dent Fundraiser and steps off the elevator, that was the first time Michael Caine saw Heath Ledger in full costume and in character, Caine's reaction was genuinely startled from the sight and presence of Ledger's performance.

      Maggie Gyllenhaal avoiding looking at Ledger at the Fundraiser when Ledger grabs her... that was real, yeah Ledger was improvving and grabbing Maggie was completely unscripted. She was actually afraid.

    I have to say @criminalcontent you are a VERY astute film watcher. Very enjoyable looking at these films on your page. Such a cool channel. Your emotions are so on point. These movies are on that level. It's like Rocky or Gladiator. As a comic book fan from childhood, we all loved how he put this icon on a such a level film wise. The score, the storyline, the acting.I envy you a bit I wish I could go back and watch it again for the first time. But I end up watching them all again every few years anyway. Classics. Great choices of films! Keep up the great work!

    Joker's Cash Amount in Dark Knight
    According to a R____t user (r/theydidthemath), the Joker’s pile of cash is approximately 5.832 million cubic inches. Using the volume of a pallet ($100 million) as a reference (92,160 cubic inches), they estimate the value of the Joker’s cash stack to be around $6.328 billion.

    LOOK AT ME! Heath Ledger was a method actor who got deeply into his roles. With Joker, this is what he did, taken from IMDB "In preparation for his role as the Joker, Heath Ledger hid away in a motel room for about six weeks. During this extended stay of seclusion, Ledger delved deep into the psychology of the character. He devoted himself to developing the Joker's every tic, namely the voice and that sadistic-sounding laugh (for the voice, Ledger's goal was to create a tone that didn't echo the work Jack Nicholson did in his 1989 performance as the Joker). Ledger's interpretation of the Joker's appearance was primarily based on the chaotic, disheveled look of punk rocker Sid Vicious combined with the psychotic mannerisms of Malcolm McDowell's character, Alex De Large, from A Clockwork Orange (1971)." I thought Jack Nicholson's performance couldn't be topped as the Joker, but Heath took it to a whole different level. He played it perfectly.
