dave wakeling tells the story of save it for later, and how pete townshend called him to get the tuning as he (townshend) and gilmour couldn't figure it out.
I think I even heard Townshend say in an introduction to one of the live versions that he wished that he'd written this song.. Quite a compliment. Quite a song!
When your phone goes and it's Pete Twosned asking you about tunings for your song, you know you're onto something! Good punchy interview - thanks for uploading.
What a great story!!! I miss the eighties, but I think "Save It For Later" might be not only one of the best songs of the eighties, but one of the best pop/rock songs ever. The best part is that Dave seems really cool and approachable. God Bless accessible rock stars.
I really don't think Pete was making fun of the tuning as the interviewer suggests. He found it novel and loved it. He's played "Save it For Later" quite often live and seems to be a big fan of the Beat.
I loved The Beat when I was a lad.....and this is 1 of my fav songs ever.....and was quite different from their Ska Style music of the time. He's still a cool down to earth Brummie
Three guitarists that have had a major impact on my musical enjoyment through the years - what a great story. Dave's about as down to earth & humble as they come. Met The Beat as they passed through my vlllage in 1980 just after their first appearance on Top Of The Pops. Roger about 2.5 years older than me (RIP mate) & we git it off right away. Absolute gent & so full of energy. Save It For Later STILL my favourite Beat tune but it's a hard decision as they were such a great band. STILL got it though as I saw them on the UK tour here last June. My watch reckons I danced about 10 kilometres that night. Love. Peace. Unity.
Loved the record in my long forgotten youth, heard it again recently and appreciated that subtle beauty even more. The live version by Pete Townshend blew me away. Pity The Beat can't reform in anything resembling the original line up :-( RIP Ranking Roger
Hey Thanks for uploading these new videos.I have really enjoyed hearing these interviews and have one of my guitars now tuned to DADAAD.I think Dave is a really cool guy who has a great sense of humour and I love Save It For Later, it's one of my all time favourite songs.
I walked up to Dave one night and then asked him if he knew Pete Townsend and his having to do with his song on my cassette tape that I had bought from a liquor store on the avenue in Ventura CA and yes Dave answered and explains how rock stars have an ability for writing hits!! Any questions please?? Save it for later baby
Townshend wasn't making fun of the tuning, he thought it was interesting and said Dave Wakeling told him the Velvet Underground used to use it. The gig at the Wiltern would've been in '93 when Townshend was doing his Psychoderelict tour.
@@nevertrustabunny I saw the video in 1987 and many times since. Never got that impression. Pete plucks each string and when he hits the unison A, second string, he's like "who would have figured that?" I disagree with the interviewer's interpretation. And Pete clearly loves the song.
Dave is quite honest but he kinda self-effaced his achievement on that genius song, because however accidental he may have come around to it. It was his genuine young teenager expression which came to it with the longing that his chords made as Youth personal rubric, regardless of whatever else he wanted to duplicate done by many. Truly Punk as Iggy's Passenger, better even. And his accidental discovery is celebrated and it's the right way to play it, it made a huge difference that gave that song its unique mix of emotions. No wonder someone as finely tuned to all guitar secrets as Townshend could appreciate it like no others.
he said that dave gilmour, who wrote "careful with that axe, eugene" nevermind "pinball wizard" trying to figure out the tuning of "one-finger wonder wakeling"
@@nevertrustabunny Cheers. I kind of worked it out a few days ago but thanks anyway. Brilliant story from a great songwriter and, after seeing a few if his interviews on YT, raconteur.
the interviewer posted this video so you could watch it. and now, the interviewer gets to be super lame and go to your page to see how amazing you are. hold on.

Opened up for Dave a while back, and he told me this story in person. Very cool dude.

Dave is such a great story teller, lol. This is priceless!
One of the best songs ever composed.
Dave seems like a really nice bloke. Amazing that he's still got his Brummie accent after all the years he's lived in the US
You don't lose it unless you move as a kid..
This man is brilliant and lovable.

Mirror in the Bathroom, does it for me, with Twist n Crawl, a close second.
when the greats cover your songs and fone u. wot a great feeling that must be.

exacto
watch the video.
when the brits say "very interesting"
that aren't using it as a compliment.

Agree he thought it was novel and unique
What a great story. Love the Beat.
Great interview! Great story! Great song, and voice!
Incredibly modest chap - deserves more credit!

This would be an even more humorous if the interviewer had let him Dave tell the story by himself. Still, I LOVE this story!
RIP to Rankin' Roger
i ask him to tell it every time he comes in, he's over telling it.
What a brilliant story. For an epic song❤

Great guy saw them live recently still fun
Beautiful when you can stump the geniuses LIKE THIS😎🤣🤣🤣 bravo sir💗
Takes me back to my junior year and the first years of MTV! They were my first concert! Needless to say, they were AMAZING!
I love your song 🎵
Great interview; I really like Pete's Deep End rendition of Save It For Later.
One of my all time faves.
Deep End is one of my all time favorite live sets. There was a recent release, I didn't care for it.

I need to change the gauge on my damn strings. Every time I use this tuning I snap the same string I can’t remember which...
Nice back story cuz Its a wonderful cover version of a superb song!
What an event that must have been for Dave!!!
@EuchridEucrow1 I agree too! Pete Townshend does a great cover of Save It For Later and loves The English Beat! Great response!!!
Save it For Later is one of the best songs of the 80's. Now I know it was inspire by John Martyn song off Solid Air.

awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

Miu Meu it’s on the Deep End Live album, with the correct string tuning. That was 1986.
Sterling Morrison and Lou Reed used all different types of odd ball tunings.
well then, if one watches the video, one knows full well he does when his face changes as he plucks the strings.

@@robertboyd7458 well if pete and dave "careful with the ax Eugene" couldn't figure it out, well then, who could?
i wish Pete Townshend would call me up
"yeah, heya there, Petey" :D
Velvet Underground tuning!
Its basically altered open d tuning

thats like the exact same thing that happenend to my sister except at the 930 club in DC on 3/1
"Problem with my G String If you don't mind me saying . . ." XD
This is an extremely rare clip of Mike Halloran not talking through 90% of an interview. Teehee....love ya, Mike.
i betcha you thought you'de never get your CDs back
Pete Townson does Good with “Save it for Later”!,
Hey I chew my nails like Dave.
What did Dave say around the 3 min mark that sent the interviewer into a fit of laughter?
he said that dave gilmour, who wrote
"careful with that axe, eugene" nevermind "pinball wizard"
trying to figure out the tuning of
"one-finger wonder wakeling"

It's an Open-D tuning, same used by Alex Lifeson on the Rush song "Hope"
It isn't.
DADAAD

it is
Yes but one string altered from the usual f# to an A
Talk DJs are guys that are in love with their own voice…creating drama just so they can talk and talk and talk.
Ive heard pete tell the story twice and i never got the sense that he thought it would juvenile. He said it was odd but then proceeded to rip.
have you seen the video? watch his eyes
he was confused as to why it would have two strings the same and when he played it live he still got it wrong.
Dave is still hot! His voice used to turn me the hell on.
Hello,Dolly,,,???
As much as I love this interview, I think Dave may be a bit confused. "Careful With That Axe Eugene" was done by Pink Floyd, not Pete Townshend.
it was both pete townshend AND david gilmour on the phone!
@@nevertrustabunny Oh, so he was referring to David at the time, and then Pete. Got it. Thanks.
