It took a lot of gear shifting to get the band, other than Dave Wakeling (who wrote it) and Everett Morton, to even record the song. Wakeling had it before The Beat formed. Steele didn't like it (it was too rock apparently) and for several years kept it off albums. Of course, they were excellent musicians, so when the record company and Wakeling threatening to record and release it as a solo effort finally forced their hand, the rest of the band could handle it. Good musicians are like that. Apparently, the song most of the band didn't want to do produces about 1/3 of all the royalties the band members get (the band credited all songs to the whole band no matter who actually wrote them).

@Mike H I think they are singing it, given that there are some off harmonies now-and-then, but obviously not playing it. At any rate it is at least not the studio version. OTT wasn't primarily a music show and it takes a lot of set up for live to get a halfway decent sound.

God bless those who were having to deal with AIDS in the early days before the medicine for it and when people with it were treated like lepers, not to be touched or gotten near. • @NotBCT
      @NotBCT 11 місяців тому

Not really. Neither Dave nor David are plugged in, Everette isn't really hitting his drums, and most of the string players are miming their playing (and are a little off the beat, so to speak).
Not surprising for the era. Most studio TV sound equipment couldn't handle the fidelities needed to process live music, even direct-input, without getting fried. Standard Operating procedure until the late 80s or even 90s was to have a backing track and have the bands lip synch.
Of course, there were some exceptions where the show or studio had specialized equipment that could handle a live performance, like early SNL, but for most television shows of the era, it was easier to just play a backing track and have a "performance" rather than have all the technical issues and potential live disasters with the band actually playing.

    Two dozen other dirty lovers
Must be a sucker for it
Cry, cry but I don't need my mother
Just hold my hand while I come to a decision on it
Sooner or later your legs give way, you hit the ground
Save it for later, don't run away and let me down
Sooner or later you'll hit the deck, you'll get found out
Save it for later, don't run away and let me down, you let me down
Black air and seven seas, all rotten through
    But what can you do?
I don't know how I'm meant to act with all of you lot
    Sometimes I don't try
    I just, "Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na
    Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na"
    (One, two, three, four)
Sooner or later your legs give way, you hit the ground
Save it for later, don't run away and let me down
Sooner or later you'll hit the deck, you'll get found out
Save it for later, don't run away and let me down, you let me down
You runaway and runaway and let me down
    Two dozen other stupid reasons
Why we should suffer for this?
Don't bother trying to explain them
Just hold my hand while I come to a decision on it
Sooner or later your legs give way, you hit the ground
Save it for later, don't run away and let me down
Sooner or later you'll hit the deck you'll get found out
Save it for later, don't runaway and let me down, you let me down
You run away, run away, run away, run away, run away
Run away and let me down
Run away, run away, run away, run away, run away, run away, run away
Run away and let me down

Is it me or does this recording blow the actual original video recording out of the water? This sounds way better to me!

Crazy to think this single didn’t even make the Top 40 when originally released during ‘82.

I know staggering isn't it? It was this performance that made me go out and buy it - I'd not heard it before this - and I sat back and waited for it to be a hit....and I waited. For years it seemed like nobody had ever heard it but really pleased it eventually seems to have attained the status it should have had back then.

Dave said that of all The Beat’s recordings it’s Save It For Later that still brings in the most money in royalties for the band members.

@@SoulStylistJukeBox I got comment elsewhere about this from someone in the US who ONLY knew this song from what was known there as the English Beat so I'm guessing a lot of that income is from outside the UK.

@@BillyBlagg Opening for David Bowie and The Police in America during '83 really boosted their profile over there (just as things were slowing down for them here). Save It For Later appeared on a couple of American movie soundtrack albums - so that helped too.

Outside of Mirror In The Bathroom or Stand Down Margaret, Save It For Later was probably the English Beat's best song.
