- The English Beat (a.k.a. The Beat) perform "Save It For Later" live at the US Music Festival in San Bernardino in 1982. "Save It For Later" is the seventh track on their third album "Special Beat Service", released also in 1982. The English Beat was one of two bands that played the US Festival both years (1982 &1983) the other band being Oingo Boingo.
The English Beat are a 2 Tone ska revival band founded in Birmingham, England in 1978. Their songs fuse ska, pop, soul, reggae and punk rock, and their lyrics deal with themes of love, unity and sociopolitical topics.

Lyrics:
Two dozen other dirty lovers
Must be a sucker for it
Cry cry but I don't need my mother
Just hold my hand while I come to a decision on it.
Sooner or later your legs give way, you hit the ground
Save it for later don't run away and let me down.
Sooner or later you hit the deck you get found out
Save it for later don't run away and let me down, you let me down.
Black air and seven seas all rotten through
But what can you do?
I don't know how I'm meant to act with all of you lot
Sometimes I don't try
I just now now now now now now now now now now now
Now now now now now now now now now now now
Soomer or later your legs give way, you hit the ground
Save it for later don't run away and let me down.
Sooner or later you hit the deck you get found out
Save it for later don't run away and let me down
You runaway runaway and let me down.
Two dozen other stupid reasons
Why we should suffer for this
Don't bother trying to explain them
Just hold my hand while I come to a decision on it.
Sooner or later your legs give way, you hit the ground
Save it Fellator, don't run away and let me down.
Sooner or later you'll hit the deck you'll get found out
Save it Fellator don't runaway and let me down, you let me down.
You run away run away runaway runaway runaway runaway
And let me down.
one of the greatest songs ever
And you have the greatest name and avatar ever! Probably the greatest written shows of all time
Yes it is.
It is most definitely a Zone that
I climb into and nothing can
touch me. A forcefield of sound.
Will be played at my funeral...
@@Yousless1
it will at mine also.
My favorite dance song of the '80s. Loved the official video, but it got the song's effect on people wrong, because as soon as the drums were struck after opening strum, it instantly had people moving.
A real band in every true sense. Talented and diverse. To be brave enough to use a sax in lead instead of guitar. This song is a painting.
One of the most underrated bands ever.
I was there.. stage right .. up against that barrier, and it was as hot as hell!
Ranking Roger! The most beautiful man to ever dance. May he rest in peace.
Very cool you attended. Looks like a very hot day that day!
I’m here for the 42nd anniversary of this song’s release and I think it is one of the most beautiful and brilliant songs by one of the most brilliant bands. I saw The Beat at US ‘83. Rip Ranking Roger. The rest of you lot keep ranking & skanking as long as your knees will let ya. Jesus loves you. Peace.
Spot on
This happened on my Birthday! I remember watching it at a party that night at a friends house.
One hallmark of a great song is that if remade in other genres, it's still a great song in those versions too. This is one of those songs.
I love this song, but I'm also just fascinated by seeing a time before the internet/social media and cellphones.
Dave and Ranking Roger forever in our ♥️'s! Miss you Roger! 😢
On a Ranking Roger memorial trip 😢
Nice...he was a COOL dude
Tripping wit the Beat of English memories 2 CJ ......I confess...
❤️❤️❤️❤️
❤️🌈❤️🌈❤️🌈❤️🌈❤️
HIT IT. Dave still has it....recently in Dublin and was 100% on top of the game...Top singer
So nostalgic I was -19 in ‘82.. yes a negative number😂. If I had a time machine the 80s would be atop my list
I was 19 in the summer of 82
That's about as perfect as a pop song can get. Nice performance.
My favourite song of all time. On a UA-cam trip listening to a ton of The Beat stuff. This is a great version. All so young looking here! RIP Roger, you're hugely missed.
Ranking Roger was the coolest. RIP!
I was there, and yes, it was a once in a lifetime, awesome, unforgettable experience.
40+ year old song still rocks better than anything in the last 20 years
I completely agree.
20? I'd say 30...
Says grampa who hasn't listened to anything in the past 20 years that hasn't been top 40 corporate pop/rock shite.
I'm in that crowd with my brother & friends GOIN' NUTS!
They sounded great live.
Missing Ranking Roger..
Roger Charlery 21 February 1963 - 26 March 2019.
Saxa too.. Lionel Augustus Martin January 5, 1930 Jamaica - 3 May 2017 U.K.
Two Tone music had so many musical influences.. Really good ones. Cheers..
Great live version of this classic 80s tune...excellent
Crying with joy to find this. I was 20 in 82. Brilliant.
Boy, this Band is IMPRESSIVE
They make it seem easier to do than it is. The Marksmanship on the notes and each fold following, so hitting the score and lifting
I am also impressed as someone as insanely good with guitar as Pete Townshend would be fascinated by the chords played, employed by David to compose this Masterpiece of very clever music and lyrics and altogether cheering song so unassuming but pic perfect good like a freshly toasted bagel yummy
THIS IS LIVE !! listen to the original recording first then this after. THAT is musicianship, live perfection. 😁
Live AND 110F that day.
Yes exactly. This is a difficult song to keep time on drums. But, Man, it sure is fun
you guys have the wrong day it was in May on memorial day weekend I went to metal day
I literally just did that and was searching for this comment :)
Miss Ranking Roger so much.....he made this song what it was......FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!
My baby and I were there, and got married a year later. We just celebrated our 35th.
lucky couple!!
Right on congrats did you see Van Halen?
Congrats. I was there too. Their set was memorable. Did you know the US Festival stage still exists and resides in fantasyland at Disneyland? During a very hot 30th anniversary I went to Disneyland and sat in the audience for a live show at about the same distance and angle we were for the US Festival. Then a bizarre thing happened. It was an extremely hot day (not as hot as 1982 haha) but leaving that Disneyland show not only did it rain, it was a bizarre downpour drenching everyone to the bone at Disney. Prior to the Disney show I talked to a woman that worked on the show. I told her why I was there that particular day and asked her if she knew the story behind the stage. She did know and went on to confess she tried to go to the first US Festival but her mom wouldn’t let her go. Thanks
wonderfull
You married your baby? That's crazy..
Written by Beat guitarist Dave Wakeling before the band was founded, the song nearly went unreleased due to opposition from bassist David Steele. After pressure from Wakeling and the record company, the song was ultimately recorded for the band's third album. The song has since become one of the band's most famous tracks and has been featured in various soundtracks and compilation albums.
John Doe, are they affiliated with the band general public? You were a great drummer in Pure country and the founder of the band X.👍
@@327JohnnySS Yes they are. Dave and Ranking Roger were the founding members. Unfortunately Roger is not with us anymore.
@@delby66 , Thank you 👍
Saw General Public at the palace in Hollywood just because I was English Beat big fan. My first concert ever.
Odd bassist would object since the song has a strong bass line.
great track . those times were great, New Wave.. Ska..
As a middle aged straight guy I have to say that I never realised how good looking Roger was. Such a cool geezer...RIP Roger, you burned very brightly.
Playing right handed guitar tuned right handed, in DADAAD, wereas being left handed, blows my mind
Such an underrated band
Great band They were very underrated!!!
RIP Rankin Roger :(
☹️...but many good memories
you would have to been there to see how much dust 300,000 plus people were kicking up. it was an absolutely stunning line up for all 3 days. have been to a lot of great shows and this one is right there in the top for sure. the bands were all in great form and facilities were good for water and other things, we all just bought spray bottles and filled them with water to keep cool. this was put on by the apple guys if i remember correctly.
i heard it was crazy hot
I was there lived about 10 miles away in delman heights/muscoy,we dubbed it the dust festival because the lawn they planted got trampled to dust by noon from 100,000 people walking and dancing around! We also called it the bus festival because people had to park by muscoy, and ride school buses to the Glen Helen grounds,Lol.
I was there. Huge crowd, 3 days, 106 degrees, water spray towers, top lineup.
They bulldozed the top of a hill to create the space, with watering stations.
We browsed the Tech tents with early Apple products, and A/C ! Great!|
I was there! great band! I became a lifelong fan of the beat after this.
1982. Saw Dave Wakeling in 2014 and he looks and sounds the exact same. He is a wizard.
Lovely fella too,met him in Hebden Bridge September 2015
He sounds the same but he looks a lot different!
This song had magic.in a just world it would have hit number1
I love you Daddy. This is the last song you sent me in an email 3 weeks before you passed unexpectedly.😔❤️
One of my childhood heroes, Ranking Roger, RIP.. From The Beat to General Public.. Thanks Steve Wozniak, for one of the people responsible for this concert. So we have this great rendition to view for future generations..
Steve Wozniak?!
@@DeepestCoconuts yes mate he was in the band
Wozmack & Wozmack
The singer's got quite a cool voice!
Just saw him tonight - he still has it. Been loving that voice since the early 80's!
Ducking Great Voice! :)
Dave Wakeling.
Roger always performed with such passion and energy. RIP old friend
RIP Roger "Ranking Roger" Charlery.
You are missed and loved.
😔💔💜🙏🏽
Still excellent after all these years. Watching Big Daddy it was playing and it reminded me to
I am reading the book ‘Not For You ‘ ( about Pearl Jam). According to the book, Eddie Vedder was at this very concert. The book says that Eddie wrote ‘Better Man’ around the same time which has a similar vocal melody, chord progression and theme, suggesting I suppose that he was influenced by this song. I think that is quite cool if true!
He blends the two songs together in live sets...very true!
When music was really real music...
RIP Ranking Roger
Special Beat Service album took a lot of listening to get into but once ya hooked, its like a drug for real. Very under rated album indeed.....which had many influences.
What The Ever-Living Fuck prevented you from quickly appreciating the GEM THAT IS SPECIAL BEAT SERVICE!?!?!?
@@swingersonian simple. The first track. I confess was a bit dreary. New romantic for me. Compared to the previous albums it was not of the standard. However why you so alarmed. Who gives a toss about your outrage. I been down since 79. When was you down with the scene. 88 USA your springs to mind lol
@gregtanian 1988? This show was in 1982 or 83, and I got into them soon after that because of their heavy airplay on MTV. I'm not a young man. In 2015, I ran into Dave Wakeling's band at a restaurant near the venue near Detroit. I was too early to go in the auditorium, so I went to eat across the street, and there he was, high as a kite. I know that The Specials were great too, but between Dave, Roger's band, and FYC, who I also saw live, these guys had immense talent.
This is flipping AMAZING!!
I was in that crowd.
Man.. been a long time since broke this out again. Good stuff. They have a distinct sound.
Very Distinct, never have been able to figure out why this has always been my favorite song. I just love it.
they are still great, saw them here in Metro Detroit in apr.2015...wakeling- seams very nice- so I think the rumor is quite true.
which rumor?
I saw The Beat/English Beat at the US Festival in 1982, hopefully I see them today at Cruel World. It was 110F+ best day, that day for music. Today is suppose to be 95F
RIP Mr Ranking Roger

My time i love the 80's songs.
I remember it was sweltering there that day and I'd completely forgotten about that until seeing them here drenched...
He died too young ! He defined Music and Lyrics RIP Ranken Roger
Hitchhiked from Vegas and snuck in the US festival. 3days time of my life.✌️🤣👍
Was there for all three glorious days!
Want to thank you for this, such an eloquent expression of despair...and what can exist on the other side of despair. Ty ty ty
Hate to sound old and out of touch by saying this is when music was real (because there is a lot of great music out there) but I will say this is better than most any new stuff out there.
Yeah, i have a hard time these days finding something that makes me feel like getting up and bouncing around to the music the way this song always has.
I was 17 in '82. There was a time and a place. .Both are far gone.
nope you are so right!!😎🇺🇸
I hear you. I’m 50. But I implore you all. Keep searching. That new music is out there. Just harder to find well, because life.
wow, great video of the band at its peak, playing my fave track! thanks.
LOVE THIS!!!!!! MY FAVORITE SONG!!!!!!!!
Love them.
Susan Fleming Check this out GHOST TOWN STEPPAS 5th Wave 2 Tone following the English Beat and Specials footsteps! www.ghosttownsteppas.bandcamp.com/track/steppastonight
That band was and still AWESOME!!!
Great Song by a great band, 80's music scene was so good.
Those were such the great days I miss the 80s alot
Truly brilliant band.
Love this song..fucking brilliant..best song by the beat plus to nice to talk to..
*OUTSTANDING!!*
Saw Wakeling perform about a month ago. He still sounds fantastic!
Bloody brilliant...👍🏿
You gotta watch their Bands Reunited episode.. this really was a flash in the pan but in a good way.
They got this group of people who’d not even be friendly outside of music.. and somehow got them to openly write music together. It was pure and no ego.. the goal was to make something neat/special.
Unfortunately.. when this song blew up and they got a taste of money, everything changed. The highlight (for me) was their percussionist. I’ve never seen someone so humble.. he explains very clearly what happened. No blame or anything, it’s almost like he’s still surprised how quick money ruined a good thing.
And fine young cannibal sucked.
RIP Rankin Roger
Was there!!!!❤
When music was MUSIC.
Another "old man yells at clouds" post. Open your mind and then open your ears.
@@nullvoid244 No offense. How many years have you been taking drum machine lessons?
Magnificent!
Yeah... SAVE IT!
I was in that crowd celebrating my 18th birthday!
Awesome
That’s a great performance.
Excellent for dancing 🕺💃🕺💃🕺
not only are they great live but the mixing here is actually fucking good for a big festival stage?
Rest in Peace, Ranking Roger. f'n cancer
I was there.
Cannot stress enough how damn hot it was at this event. Amazing though to say the least.
Dave has a beautiful voice
Sheer class xx 😘
My brother was there.
The temp that day was around 110 F (or 43.3 Celsius) right around the time The Beat came on to play. It wasn't the hot stage lights that was making the band sweat. They were one of the groups I specifically came to see that day and they didn't disappoint, which really says something about their dedication to give a great performance.
Even though I drank as much water as I could, I remember that I lost over ten pounds in water weight that day, so I respect everyone who performed that day and especially the groups who performed in the afternoon.
Reminds me of seeing the Sugar Cubes (with Bjork) in a tiny, packed upstairs club - without air conditioning IIRC - in the middle of summer. It was crazy, crazy hot, but we didn't want the band to stop playing. So they didn't. The encore must have lasted an hour. They ran out of songs, then did alternate - e.g. country - versions of their songs. Now THAT'S dedication.
wow...good tale!
@@aquamarine99911 did they have Sugar Cubes on stage?..
Dry Heat, right?
🖤🖤🖤
R.I.P. Rankin' Roger.
It always makes me think of the film kingpin, a classic and faf
After reading some of the comments, Vice needs to do one of their documentary The Story of on this song
No computers, internet, cell phones, or WiFi!!!!!!!! I remember.
RIP Ranking Roger...
According to what I’ve read, this song almost didn’t make it onto the album because the bass player didn’t think it fit their sound. All these years later this song is The English Beat
He started the song off by saying “ No clues about what this next song is, except we’ve been saving it for later”.
That guy with the tambourine was great, lot of spirit.
The US festival was fantastic! They don’t do concerts like that anymore and with Covid probably never will again!
Ephraim Lessell/Doctor Lessell/ The Doctor is in and salutes Dave Wakeling and The Beat/ English Beat/ open tuning
Timeless song. Someone should cover this.
