So if you want to learn how to use your phone camera as a web camera you're in the right place!
This video will be helpful for Teachers, Livestreamers, Virtual Presenters and Creators who want to use their phones as a webcam.
I wasted money on Webcams thinking it was going to upgrade the quality of the image when doing Zoom calls, Microsoft Team Meetings, Google Hangouts, Discord etc.
After messing around with the web camera control software from Logitech for several hours I decided to give up on it, it just couldn't seem to produce the quality that I was looking for as a former Videographer.
So I started researching alternatives and discovered that you could use applications like FiLMiC Pro, Camo and EpocCam to turn your iPhone or Android device into a web camera.
The quality and controls blew me away 🤯!
Finally, I could stop fiddling around with my lighting setup in the home studio and focus on creating content.
This video focuses on comparing EpocCam from Elgato and Camo from Reincubate. They are similar yet unique applications with different capabilities.

Thank you! Just the video I was looking for. Although I couldn’t use your discount for the Camo lifetime version which is what I wanted to get for this. I may still be buying this, but may wait to see if they have any sales coming. Thanks again - great video!
This review is really helpful. Thank you! 👍❤️
Thank you for this video, it really helped me
I use Camo multiple times a day for EVERYTHING (Zoom, FaceTime, video messages, etc.). The app has a record option as well. As an actor, I use that feature for ALL my self-tapes. The videos are saved to the computer. No need to ever worry about running out of room on my phone. Gave away my webcam. It's crazy how great my video looks. The lifetime license is well worth it.
Well said Pete! It’s incredibly versatile and it sounds like you’re really getting the most out of it. Thanks for sharing.
Man you're replying after more than a year. May your channel reach enormous success😊
Admittedly one of my primary drivers is to build community. I really value the people who show up and share their thoughts as I figure things out. Thank you for saying that
Thank you! This was so helpful!
Glad it helped Carina! Any cool projects you’re working on?
@@ContentCreationWithMatt Right now I'm mainly just using it for Zoom meetings, but I'll be hosting some webinars soon. I do have a question maybe you can answer. When I'm in the control panel for Camo, I can zoom in and out to make my picture bigger or smaller. But while I can see the changes in the control panel, when I connect to Zoom, it doesn't translate to my Zoom picture. No matter what I do, it shows my face really close up in Zoom. I've been just moving my camera stand farther from my face, but there's only so far I can make it go on my desk. Is there a way to make myself smaller in Zoom? I'm using the free version of camo right now, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Thank you!
Awesome. Thank you so much
You're very welcome!
Thanks , i wanna know which best app with no lag for iphone or android i tried many apps
I am trying to use my Logitech Brio with my Mac Mini M1 for Skype calls. Video lag is a major problem. I am using the Logitech drivers and not EpocCam or Camo. Will try them assuming the lag is due to that. Probably will go to using my iPhone 13 instead of Brio.
Since this video has been released Elgato has released a desktop application that gives you a lot more options. Still not as many options to fine-tune the image quality but I also wouldn't say that camo's $ 80-lifetime license is that much better.
Thanks for the heads up!
This is exactly the information I was looking for. I have a Logitech WebCam that I bought not too long ago but haven’t been happy with the image quality. Then I was thinking why do I need a webcam when I can just use my phone? Duh! I hadn’t even heard of a EpocCam or Camo before so thank you so much for this very educational video Matt!
That's awesome Steve, I'm glad this helped you out!
I just purchases a lifetime CAMO Pro 1.7 for $125 (AUD) to use with iPhone 13 Pro Max and looking forward to maxing out this software in my Live Streams. Thank YOU for producing this AWESOME video! New Sub here. Cheers from Western Australia
Awesome! You’re going to love this setup! And they are always pushing upgrades to make it better. Thanks for your feedback it means a lot to me.
Are you happy with you decision a month later?
I'm in Australia too.. $120 is a fair whack, but it does seem like Camo is a great option. I'm an online music teacher and looking to get more into youtube content creation as well
My grief with Epoccam is it still uses the now defunct itunes suite on windows which introduces a number of issues with the OS breaking things along the way, they have not recoded it and it is the same basic functionality, yes the new desktop hub does a better job of controlling certain things but it seems more of an effort to keep up and be relevant to other better suited and thought of tools out there.
THAAANK YOOOOOOU .... seems like a thorough comparison/how-to video !!!
I'm 48yo and old school... LOVED my LG440G tracfone that my friends loved to call me "flip-osaurus man" and since theyre doing away with 3G, for the first time I just bought and used a new Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus smart phone. I can already tell that I dont like using smart phones to surf the net after I've been using a PC for over 15 years and got a 32" monitor, and so going to turn the phone into an expensive webcam for live streaming
.....although would have been nice if Camo offered the wireless-to-pc feature... eh then again, you video is several months old and so I'll see if they updated anything for their app.
Very possible we will see a wireless upgrade to Camo in the near future!
sorry but the audio on my app camo at my laptop is not showing your audio is showing but mine is blur no audio .
08:06 "I'm always in focus" as you're focused on the wall behind you haha. I know you were actually talking about the app's focus ability, it was just a funny moment out of context :p
I watched so many videos on the focus capabilities of the Panasonic GH5 (because it's really bad) where this exact thing happened all the time. 😂
Great comparison video! Do you happen to know ether either of these application will work with Apple Keynote Live Video and QuickTime recognized as a source camera? Thx!
Did you get it sorted out Carlos?
@@ContentCreationWithMatt No - it seems these ‘virtual cams’ are not supported by Apple’s latest MacOS.
OH! Good to know
Any idea why Camo sometimes stutters/lags and the colour seems rather orange/yellow?
This video is bloody good! Much love from Australia! To your knowledge is there any app that streams your phone at 60fps instead of 30?
@@ContentCreationWithMatt That would be awesome man! Gotta say you replied so much quicker than I thought you would. You are seriously underrated!
It’s good to know there is still hope! Thank you for letting me know mate
@@lingumo76 IVCam offers 60 FPS and Wifi. The quality is pretty much dead centre between EpocCam and Camo. It tends to stutter a little (not as bad as EpocCam) on wifi. It has some PC controls, but nowhere near as many as Camo
@@BaneWilliams THANK YOU
@@ContentCreationWithMatt Mate! Epoc cam, Camo ect ect have nothing on this app, you do have to pay yearly that’s the only way to unlock 60fps. But I could not recommend it more!! I was gonna get a dslr If I couldn’t get something like this. But no need now. I am very grateful to your amazing community Matthew
With iOS Ventura, the support for iPhone as a webcam is built-in with Macs. The integration is good. Therefore Epoccam or Camo will only be helpful to support iPhone as webcam for Windows computers.
Probably true, I know 5he developer is working hard to provide additional features that go beyond the built in Mac OS. Guess we'll see 🙈
Depending on what you're trying to do, epoccam is $8 for the pro version while camo has a subscription model or $80 for a lifetime subscription. I'm not sure the camo set up is $70ish better for my usage but like you said if you're using it for content creation the camo setup is probably a better tool. If that 15% coupon would work for the lifetime access for camo I'd probably still go with camo.
@@ContentCreationWithMatt I think for my usage epoccam pro will be fine. I really like the wireless option but after messing with camo hands down the camo features and being able to adjust the settings on a laptop are the way to go.
Maybe they'll have a sale for black friday
@@ContentCreationWithMatt I emailed them about a Black Friday sale and they didn’t give me a definitive answer. For $80 I’m kind of wondering if one of Logitech’s 1080 webcams would be as good or better of an option
@@ContentCreationWithMatt thanks. Already purchased the $8 app. Crossing fingers for a Black Friday sale on the other option
@@ContentCreationWithMatt NICE! Hopefully, even a tiny discount on the lifetime would become available.
The biggest difference for me is that in camo you have settings in computer app not in phone which is standing as camera and you don’t see it’s screen
Are there any apps that include a picture shutter button? I'd like to be able to press a button on the app to capture a still picture, just like the iOS camera app.
@@ContentCreationWithMatt Problem is, I want to be 10-12 feet away from computer when triggering the photo.
@@ContentCreationWithMatt No, not for thumbnails. I've written an app that runs on a win10 box. It requires a video source. Epoccam works. The only problem is: To trigger snapshots you must be at the PC.
Camo has support for wireless connection now too.
Yes I’m excited about the new updates!
Thank you. There’s so much information out there that it’s hard for me to decide which I need. It sounds like Camo would be a good investment for what I need. An artist is going to paint while I project it to a large TV screen. Does this sound right?
Would I be able to use an older iPhone 7 for the same purpose? I assume the camera quality wouldn’t be is great.
Hi Carol - Camo will help you get a decent video feed from your iPhone 7 via the desktop app for Windows or Mac then you’ll have to figure out how to get that source to your projector if you haven’t already done that part.
It’s worth a shot to try and use your iPhone rather than buying expensive camera equipment!!
Matthew is the phone doing the projection or would it be my Mac connecting via WiFi?
Camo handles what your video looks like and gives you controls it provides the video signal coming in to your computer from there you have to find a way to send the signal to the projector. This is very dependent on the equipment so I have no idea! I’ve never hooked up a camera to projector sorry I can’t be of much help here. You might be able to get some support inside The Creators Campfire community though
Here’s a link to join we have a rep from Camo in there discord.gg/cHMnupZxWE
Thank you for your video! I have a problem with Epoccam, as soon as I connect it on OBS Studio, my whole pc is lagging, could you please help me ?
I have no idea on that one sorry OBS can be finicky especially based on the specifications of your computer. Through the help menu inside OBS you can create a log file and click analyze after using the setup the software will detect bottlenecks and point you in the right direction to resolve it
I've look at about 12 of these videos and no one actually shows you how to set up the cables from iphone, to video capture or hdmi to your computer? What are the steps for the cable hook ups please?
Hey Matty if you’re using Camo there’s no capture card or HDMI required all you need is your USB cable straight into the computer.
I’m getting Camo app, it seems like perfection! I have a question. If I’m recording my phone cam at 30fps but stream my game at 60fps, which fps should I edit in?
Create your editing timeline framerate to match the most important footage for your viewer, sounds like 60fps is likely the way to go for your use case ABESPN
@@ContentCreationWithMatt thank you sir 🙏
Haven't seen anybody talking about connecting an android phone to your pc as a webcam and how that basically kills your battery(charging and using at the same time). Is there an app that takes care of that issue?
Sorry I don’t have an Android anymore and never trusted any battery apps. Usually you can get a new battery for under $100 installed
I did have Camo, and then stopped using it, but after trying Elgato's Facecam, I may come back to Camo.
My main issue was how to get the best sound because the iPhone is connected to my MacBook Air thus I have no spare lightning port on the iPhone left to add a further microphone - such as the Sennheiser MKE 200 Mobile Kit.
Just relying on the mobile microphone seems poor quality for me.
Any tips?
And from memory, when using Camo, Quicktime does detect it.... right?
@@ContentCreationWithMatt Agreed. So far have struggled with 3 different hubs. I have found that the Camo has to be connected directly to the MacBook Air.
That leaves one spare port for the Ethernet and the power cable - though getting an adaptor that allows the Ethernet to work and the usb has been a pain.
AirPods?
So I was using camo to use my iPhone with obs on my pc laptop. The first time I used it… it mostly went fine minus making my game pretty laggy. The second time I used it frames started dropping for a minute or two out of an hour of footage. The third time, all the footage was completely unusable. I guess my CPUs were just maxed? (I’m not tech savvy so I’m not sure if that makes sense). I don’t have this problem when I only use obs to screen record. But the moment I add in my facecam(iPhone) with camo, everything goes awry. Any advice?
I’ve spent a great deal of time trying to tweak OBS Settings and what I’ve found is that it’s really based on your computer performance - there’s no one size fits all solution unfortunately.
Most of the processing from Camo is actually handled by your iPhone but there are some settings which can impact performance.
Using the portrait bokeh effects, zoom in your video feed, resolution settings etc.
My recommendation is to poke around inside the Camo app on your computer and try to reduce the workload. It’s going to be trial and error to narrow it down.
@@ContentCreationWithMatt thank you!
haven't checked these apps out in a while. All my stuff is currently in storage so in the meantime I went back to DroidCamX for live streams. Years late it still freezes my streams occasionally for no apparent reason, on 720p, with a powerful pc and fast wifi connection. Still prefer the webcam though. Maybe phones have slightly better qualiuty, but the new webcams quality is still very good, instant usb connection, always on, and frees your phone up during stream, and the connection is just much more stable, no third party app to open, etc. But we'll see, maybe these will surprise me. Gonna try EpoCam first and go from there. Nice vid! Cheers.
Camo has added on wireless functionality since this video was created.
WIth Camo, if you connect an iPhone to an iMac, is the video actualy recorded on the iPhone or the imac? Also, is it compatible with Quicktime?
Video is recorded on the computer as far as I can tell. No idea about QuickTime sorry I’m a windows user.
@@ContentCreationWithMatt Thanks so much. For info, I have since downloaded the demo version of Camo, and it seems to work fine with Quicktime :) Really appreciate you taking the time to reply.
You’re always welcome to join other creators in The Creators Campfire on Discord
Super
I wanted to try to get the EpocCam app working because I paid for it. I’ve been using it fine since April but recently it started being really laggy and freezing. 😕 idk why. I used to connect with WiFi. But even if I use the USB cable it still freezes. After I reset everything its fine and then it freezes again.
That sucks! They did recently update Camo with wifi capabilities and it works great, could be a great alternative
Any apps that I can use Facetime on a Mac Mini with?
@@ContentCreationWithMatt So The mac mini doesn't come with a cam because it's not a laptop, and I was looking into alternatives to a physical webcam, but these apps on a phone seem like a much better option. The problem is that Facetime on Macs doesn't allow the use of virtual webcams, which is how the system reads these apps.
Wondering if there is an app that uses center stage. I wanna use my ipad as a webcam n get an hdmi clean feed into obs.
I don’t know what Center stage is but you can do clean HDMI with FiLMiC pro there is another video on this channel that teaches you how. Don’t cheap out on the adapter though that plugs into the iPad I tested lots of cheap ones and none of them worked. In the end only the apple branded adapter worked
@@ContentCreationWithMatt center stage is a feature on the new ios cameras. Its the ability to automatically follow the person within the shot. Would be cool if theres an update on apps that allows that feature as well.
I'm poking around in Camo free with OBS. The picture is great, but it isn't picking up any sound? Does audio not work in the free version. The mic works in DroidCam X but for some reason I get nothing in Camo.
I'd recommend an affordable USB mic for this like FIFINE on Amazon it will sound significantly better than the phone mic. To answer your question though yes you should be able to get your mic to work playing with the settings in camo and OBS
A bit late but when adding camo as a sources you have to scroll down and tick "use custom audio" then in the drop down choose "micriphone camo" its doesnt tick use custom by default thus no sound
Great video. I disagree on one point, it’s apple that need to step up, Elgato & Logitech both have 4k/60 cameras, iPhone has USB2 so wifi is needed for the higher quality iPhone settings. Thank goodness Apple are banned from using the lightning connector now, surely they won’t be crazy to still cap at usb2 on usb-c socket.
Specifications only look good on paper until you see the output. The problem with most webcams start with USB processing and low quality image sensors. Apples advantage is the camera is processed by hardware and software combined. Those webcams send the single over USB and it's up to the computer to do the work. The lines are blurred moving forward but 4K capabilities don't necessarily translate to a high quality output unless you have ample lighting and solid computer.
Is Camo compatible with the front facing camera on iPhone?
You can change lenses in the desktop software but the rear camera is best quality and you can see everything your camera sees on your computer screen
@@ContentCreationWithMatt thanks for the feedback
Hi Matt, what I am looking for is using a smartphone that I no longer use, to watch my kid's room while I'm at work. I have an iphone. Is that possible?
It's definitely possible, reliability wise a nest camera for example might be a better fit. You'd have to mount the phone and keep it plugged in. Not sure what app you could use for this though
Alfred Home Security app works amazingly for this application
@@ContentCreationWithMatt Alfred Home Security works amazingly
Great video. Answer every question I had. I tried to use your link for the 15% OFF but unfortunately it looks like it doesn't apply to lifetime subscriptions, which seem to hands down be the best deal. Sorry and thank you! 😆
Epoccam is crap, many connections issues. Camo is expensive and the desktop version for Windows is still in beta stage and needs an USB connection. I came to a another solution... iVCam plays in the same ballpark as Camo but supports W-LAN too (and works out of the box with OBS)
Why does no one go over if I can send it to iPad from iPhone
I can help with this but need to understand better first. You want to send the video feed from your iPhone to an iPad instead of a Mac or pc is that right?
So basically Epoc is for people who don’t want to spend money and Camo is for everyone else (minus the wireless feature).
Basically yes
THERE is THOUSAND of app, PLEASE HELP ME!
-I would simply want to see my camera image and basic control (REC/STOP) in my desktop monitor.
-I want to use USB keep the battery full and no frame lost (no wifi).
-I have an external USB mic that is plugged in my computer
The most importants factor: getting 4k 30fps video and no lost of quality at all.
I hate downloading app because if I don't like them, It's always a pain to get rid of it completely.
What is your suggestion to get that PERFECT 4k with no alteration at all?
Thanks for your precious time, seriously.
I just use OBS for everything and I stopped using 4K because it slows my editing workflow down too much
@@ContentCreationWithMatt Thanks so much, I will follow your pro tip!
I used Epoc for 2yrs with Intel Macbookpro . Now Using M1 macbookpro
and not working
I’ve heard there’s comparability issues with the M1 maybe Camo will be fine?
@@ContentCreationWithMatt My Epoc is paid version 😀 so waiting them to update it for new version of mac... I used to have a lot of online meetings, and now use my sony A7c but still happy to have mobile with webcam features where I can connect wirelessly
Camo make my Samsung phone to overheat
The biggest difference, Epoccam does not support Windows 7.
As of 2022 Sept , only droid cam works nothing else works, every other software has glitchy output.
Hmmmm maybe I’ll stick with the iPhone then
Just tell us if it supports 60fps or not? -_-
Nope! But how will I know for sure? I don't! It supports many different phones and the app is different on Mac and Windows. If you're looking for answers the developer has a website
eposcam set up process is a giant pain in the ass compare to the camo set up process that is less of a drag. the only thing that bathers me about camo is the eye sore of a white background on their app. white background is not good for low vision users.
Sending your feedback to the Camo team ;) hopefully we will get a “dark mode” option
@@ContentCreationWithMatt yeah they really need a dark mode. white backgrounds are really awful for people's eyes.
Well if you want to join the community on discord for more support and connecting with fellow creators that app features a dark mode ;)
@@ContentCreationWithMatt thanks but I respectfully decline.
No worries friend
why it stutter ?
@@ContentCreationWithMatt i already download the free version, if i use wifi there's a delay about 1/2 second, if i upgrade to pro version will the delay reduce ? for wireless connection which one is better in term of delay, NDI or wifi ? thank you, i hope you can answer my question.
@@ContentCreationWithMatt ok, thank you very much for the info
Camo has had wireless use for ages ..
It didn't exist when this video was made
There is a HUGE difference in quality between these apps on android and iPhone. They need to fix that.
Agreed! Unfortunately it’s not a developer fix the variety of hardware on Android (and varying degrees of API/hardware access to developers) makes it nearly impossible to achieve the same results as iOS
Camo premium is worth every penny.
Great point! I love all the additional controls you get!
Camo is fucking shit...constantly broken after updates
This stinks. It's not for Android.
Actually both apps are available for the majority of Android phones released in the last year or so.
@@ContentCreationWithMatt I searched the play store, i searched apkpure, i searched all names, company names... Only 1 is available, as a pre release.
