PUBG Footstep Compressor Testing: Best Way To Setup VAC Voicemeeter Banana Compressor

- Think certain sounds like explosions and gunshots are WAY too loud in games like PUBG or Squad? This can be easily fixed. By installing a sound compressor in Windows 10 or 7 you can lower gunshot / gunfire volume and hear quieter noises like footsteps without going deaf.
I setup a compressor in my previous video, linked here: • Louder Footsteps, Quie...
This video shows the testing I did in PLYAERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS with three different guns. I tested running on asphalt with a shotgun, running on desert ground with a UMP, and running on a rooftop with a Glock 18. I ran on the ground and measured the volume in Audacity, then fired my weapon. I then adjusted my compressor and performed my test. I then analyzed the Decibel differences in Audacity to compare what various levels of compression did.
Voicemeeter pro / Banana have compressor settings ranging from 0.0 - 10.0. At 10.0 audio is 100% compressed and everything is the same volume. I tested at various increments to figure out what's idea for games with poor sound mixing like PubG or Squad.

A really well made video, for my ringing right ear. Pubg shooting, airplane passing and bombs dropping definitely is going to make my right ear totally deaf.
Glad you liked it. The sound can be absolutely brutal at times. Hopefully this helps.
Big thank you for putting this together, really helpful!
I love you man. Out of every game I've ever played in my life PUBG has seriously made me doubt my sanity, the audio is just utter garbage, I thought it was just me.
Haha. I think the game devs plan to make all the players deaf and they secretly own large amounts of hearing aid company stock.
came here for compression insight / advice for voicemeter
one of the best explanations ive seen of how compression works and it's for pubg lol, amazing
Sometimes I can actually put words together in a helpful way, haha.
Thank you, exactly what I was looking for
Happy to help.
this is so well done, thanks!
Thank you, I love it when people appreciate the effort I put in.
Damn, I've been looking for this for a while now. Thanks so much. I'd definitely love to see something similar related to CS:GO. Cheers from Brazil.
This works for any game including cs go
@@Compulsion84 Already did the settings and this is fucking AWESOME! No more raping my ears and now footsteps are more easily distinguishably. The only down side for me is setting and getting used to the macros with VM opened where only using windows I was already used to the macros I've created with 3RVX. Thanks so much
You're very welcome
Dude thank you for this!!
No problem. Happy dropping.
The best video audio pug :)
For you which are the best 3 headphones for pubg, because I have a very weak and would like to be buying a new one.
amazing video. very in depth and easy to understand. you have a new sub. please keep it up :>
I appreciate it. Welcome aboard!
Two very good videos. Thanks
Thank you very much.
thanks dude i wish i saw your video 3 years earlier
Better late than never.
great video and test, thanks!
Thanks, you're welcome!
Hello, thanks for for these various videos you made. I have a question: My "playback" device is Realtek High Definition Audio which is working with a few EQ and sound enhancing softwares (bass & treble boosts and stuff like this). If I install VAC and Voicemeter softwares, will I lose all the enhancements I have from my other softwares?
Most likely. I would check your enhancement suite, it may have compression settings built in.
Very very well made and informative video. Exactly what i was looking for and more.
Thank you. I really like it when people appreciate the polish I try to put on my videos.
THUMBS UP FOR INVESTING THE TIME DOING THESE TESTS.sorry for the caps.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Hmmm, great video! Gonna try this with Escape From Tarkov after work...
My m8 has gaming soundcard and it feels like it does have some kind of compression (he is spots footsteps much better then I do. And I have xonar essence stx.)
Is there a way for you to make same tests in Escape from Tarkov?
Sorry, don't have that one. I would just apply a similar principle and start with 1.0-2.0.
Hey, really like your videos. Since i actually also have X2s, do you have any specific Equilizer-Settings for Pubg or do you have your equilizer disabled and just the compressor running?
Thank you. I don't use an equalizer in general, including pubg. I run the compressor as shown at 1.2. It keeps me from going deaf and doesn't hurt my directional hearing too terribly much.
actually I dont care about hearing my own footsteps. sometimes I confused with my footstep either its enemy near me. is that possible to decrease our footsteps and boost enemy footsteps ?
@@Compulsion84 hey is it possible to lower your own footsteps and boosting the enemy footsteps
best way setup VAC
me:VAC? no,thx
hello so whats the optimize settings for hearing footsteps while in a gun fight?
I'm having trouble with this.. I've used voicemeeters compressor before without issues, but now for some reason it's not working. I get audio and all, but no compression whatsoever.. The compressor wheel only functions as a volume wheel. If I put it for example on 3 it only raises the volume on everything. Don't really know what's going on here. I'm sure I've set it up correctly.
Honestly very helpful video. My ears will def profit from that :) Can you help me. After I installed VAC and voicemeter banana with adjusting all your suggested settings I always hear a cracking/popping in the background. Do you have any tips for fixing that? :/
I had it happen once or twice when I first set it up. I think I fixed it with a restart.
God
are the footstep sounds also meant to decrease when people shoot their guns? Or have I just set it up wrong
I would love a video on footstep sound from enemies, using compressor vs no compressor.
That's a good idea. I'll have to see if my friends will cooperate.
amazing, wish i learned this before i got tinnitus from csgo
Ooh nooo. Hopefully it's minor. I had some for a bit (I think from Shooting), but luckily it is mainly gone.
Love your videos
arma 3 is the real going deaf simulator
I almost fell out of my chair laughing when I read this.
Hey, can someone help me with this? When I set the compressor above 0.5 it just completely removes all the quiet sounds, it reduces the sound of the gun shots but it completely removes foot steps. What am I doing wrong?
Voicemeeter make a mess with my Keyboard in games creating a lag on releasing WASD keys happening ramdomly, I search and try everything till I eliminate the setup of voicemeeter. Any suggestion?
I know this is an old video but how bad would 1.5 affect directional audio and distance audio from a scale to 1-10
I would say it's like a 2-2.5 with 10 being unusable.
im sorry im such a nub, i turn my comp to 2 but how about thje "fader gain"?
I get a popping noise anytime i shoot my gun or a nade goes off why? Whenever I have the compressor on all sounds have a loud pop noise at the start and it legit hurts really bad to listen to
How do you select an output as the input device? When I click "Select Input Device", the only options are for my microphone.
Oh, never mind. Downloading VBCable now . . .
i actually did tried this but sometimes my teammates can't hear me in pubg.. they say its like static noises.. the sound compression works but there are times it suddenly boosts sounds then few moments it toned down back to normal.. it happens randomly..
I think if I were to test this I would do 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 6, 10 or something like that to try and get a comparable change in DB delta from data point to data point so someone could really see if roughly what the choice is e.g. I would guess 0-1 would make the dynamic range about half, 0-3 about a quater and then it would really depend how much there was to begin with from there on. I think most people doing this would do at least 1 as if you aren't going to try and make a significant difference like about halfing the dynamic range in order to make quieter sounds significantly more audible then it's probably not worth the added latency but you'd need to test that after finding your desired setting on your system, I suspect it would be something like 30ms which is like going from a wire to a dongle on your headset - if the things you need to react to are already audible and youre just trying to get those extra maybe 5% of sounds youre finding youre missing perhaps not worth it if 20-30+% of sounds are twitch reaction with less than half a second to react but unless you find yourself losing games for this specific reason I think having a smaller dynamic range with a compressor is worth it as if your focus is being disrupted by some sounds being obnoxious I feel that pretty much any amount of latency could be worth it unless its like 200+ making it unplayable as if you cannot focus you cannot play the game well or even focus on the audio. I would also note unless youre struggling to hear specific sounds or there are particular sounds which plays too much this isn't a thing for single player/experience games, especially as individual frequencies can be tuned out in EQ possibly even on a pergame basis if youre willing to take the time to say do the pack a punch challenge on CoD zombies to make sure most weapons aren't destroying your ears or making the game unpleasant to play.
6:52 I think refering to this as dB difference is actually better than talking about the actual dynamic range until you do your final maths because this is a much easier representation of whats happening without having to complicate the equation and will probably work better with many different games with difference amounts of dynamic range but I think it is still important to point out that, although there are different types of dB measurements such as dBA which I dont quite understand they roughly work such that 10 more decibels is twice the sound and hence - "85% dB difference" here in this specific game is about a quarter the difference from 0 compressor setting bnut going from compressor 2 to 4 or 6 would be about a third and 14th the dB but only about doubling the quietist relative sound in each case which I think much better demonstrates how little difference going past 2-3 compressor setting makes and how much of the actual perceptable dynamic range you will lose, so at the end of everything talk about volume differences not dB values in my opinion.
Question for anyone who has actually done this setup: With compression turned up to 4 or above, do you have any trouble distinguishing how far away footsteps are? My thinking is that the sound levels will be equalized so much that footsteps 10 feet away might sound the same as footsteps 50 feet away. Which is a huge problem obviously.
I don't like going above 2. Last time I played I used 1.5. it definitely affects location ability.
If you use a basic vst plugin you'll be able to set the threshold that the compressor triggers. Leave a long release time and set the compressor as high as it will go. Do not set 'make up'.
The real trick I'm trying to do, because even dropping the shot to the floor doesn't help; the transient is way too strong, is to go a step further and essentially 'erase' the gunshot.
Any way you can make your pubg footsteps settings shareable? Or post a picture of the vm banana settings
I don't have pubg running anymore, I would just check the video for details. That's what I was running at the time, typically at 1.0 compression.
is it just me or does this put a minor delay on the audio? im using the compressed input and output and i feel like the audio in not in perfect sync with my gameplay. Do you know how I could fix this?
A couple people mentioned this, but I have never experienced it. You might try some of the other "options" like WDM, KS, or MME. I don't know if it will help, but that's what I would try.
whats your setup ?
I know this was a while back, but if gunshots are too loud, should I turn down the decibels?
You can adjust the compression to "even out" loud and quiet. The more you adjust the more gunshots and other sounds get similar. Sometimes adjusting compression can change volume that you would adjust via your speakers or headphones directly (ot through your mixer).
can you do a video for best voicemeeter settings for COD Blackout?
Nobody has done a video for Blackout, i think it will bring alot of views and subs into your channel
Thanks for the idea. I don't have Blackout though. Supposed to be really fun I hear.
Can you still use this in PUBG?
Have you tried any binaural/ surround audio simulation with pubg?
I haven't. Is it any good?
Compulsion84 I just saw a video on it today. Was going to try it later. Apparently pubg can output in 6 channels but doesn't officially support surround. Check out the video by Chris Cook on binaural sound in PUBG.
What do you mean by turn off compresser... put it to 0?
Exactly. Putting it to 0 disables the effect. Mine is on 0 whenever I'm not playing pubg.
I`v done everything but now I can`t hear anything on my rear side, i can`t hear footsteps, gunshots, or anything behind, everything is ok everywhere except for rear, is complete death
That's how people can hear me before I can hear then. I thought I was going deaf... might as well becoming deaf by PUBG max volume settings all the time.
Most my friends were just going dead. That wasn't an acceptable answer for me.
can u please help me out with Peace and APO GUI used...what should we do to make sound better
Can you clarify? I don't know what you mean.
nwm bro...i started used voicemeeter...but noise canceling...while talking on discord is impossible for me....ppl simply can hear everything from my headphones even if that wasnt a case beofre...i am using G430 logitech headphones...i tried gate option...no avail ....tnx...ur videos are really good man
When I use VM banana, it causes so much input lag that I can't shoot people. Am I the only one with this problem? As soon as I uninstall the program, I have no issues at all.
how much should i compress in order to get the footsteps clearly?
I recommend 1.5 to start. Adjust in .2 increments from there.
i have compression at 6 and it feels great... what you really want to test here is hearing enemy footsteps... your footsteps or gun shots/explosions are not important.
I thought so too. But having the compression level above 3 really fucked up the distance of those footsteps. There's a range where I cannot tell if they are running towards me or away from me
What about latency? Doesn't banana add a bunch of latency?
I didn't notice any delays.
there is a 0.1 sec delay do you know how to fix it thank you
Did you fix it? Your audio is going through multiple audio sinks / pipelines implemented in software on a not realtime processor. Im guessing its hard to fix, unless you use dedicated DSPs, but audio engineering hardware is expensive.
Will I be banned for using this software in pubg? And are esports players allowed to use these kind of third party softwares to listen to footsteps accurately?
I have no idea. I never had issues when I played. Realistically it hurts your ability to locate directions of sounds slightly so there are trade offs. I imagine in official tourneies you couldn't do this though. Everyone is probably just damaging their hearing.
Try the sniper rifle on Battlefront 2. Absolute hearing damage. These companies should be brought to congress to explain why they're out to destroy hearing damage for everyone. If your family has a history of tinitus, I strongly suggest avoiding playing ANY of these types of games, because the 'sound designers' clearly think it's cool to make people's 'ears bleed'. Or, just play without sound at all.
And the argument that, 'in real life', blah blah blah is BS... jumping up and down like an idiot will get you killed on a real battlefield inside of 5 seconds.
These companies need to be held responsible.
How to remove the echo? - I use VoiceMeeter Banana + headphones +desktop microphone, but the other player hears the echo of his voice through my VoiceMeeter. a.radikal.ru/a33/1910/76/c5d65772d494t.jpg
if u setup voicemeeter bananaa in other way u can compress only the pubg sound through the vbcable and not have to worrie about changing settings all the time
Not that I'm aware of.
voice meter sucks, i really hope someone makes a multiband compressor or limiter which would be way more useful
They did: sound lock.
Schiit Modi? Barf!
I can hear the saliva
Sorry about that. I redid windows and my audacity isn't ideal yet. I also grapple with mouse noise anyways.
I just got a VAC using VAC...
Just kidding
If you play fornite you should make videos about that they would get good views
If I jump into that, for sure. I'm loving the hardcore mechanics of pubg.
yeah i like the hardcore mechanics as well. Fortnite is a little toomuch cartoonish fairyta
le fore me
Yeah unforunately in recent patches fortnite changed their audio profile setting to be more like pubg. AKA if you wanna hear footsteps get ready to go deaf or shit your pants around every corner.
I can hear your saliva. Please tune down that ASMR bs. It is incredibly annoying and distracting.
Yeah I'm working to fix it, something got changed and I'm not sure what. What is ASMR?
ASMR are noises that are meant to make a person have a skin-tingling sensation. Most of the times it is just one person speaking really close to a microphone where you can hear every sound that the mouth makes. Some people like it others find it revolting either way it is an extremely niche fetish. With that aside you other videos are fine and I really enjoy your content so keep on going.
Thanks, I plan to. I appreciate the feedback.
You should make fortnite even though it’s better than PUBG 😂
