The game is almost 2 years old now and not only are new problems being found (like the framerate affecting the firerate) but basic functionality like the audio hasn't been fixed, despite them playing around with it over the years.

    Mechanical engineer here - i have acoustic engineering experience and sounds definitely don't work like this. Currently it is really bad as you mention in the video, and simulating sound properly requires too much work for Bluehole (since they take ages to fix a simple bug and then break it again), but the simplest solution is to assign frequency attenuation curves to each floor and walls, and for the roof use a totally different sound signature because in reality the roof surface should be different since insulation/waterproofing material is used. Since most building assets are duplicates it shouldn't be too hard to make. And forget about simulating sound reflections, too computational expensive and extremely work consuming to make. Using attenuation curves also "fixes" the issue where environmental background noise from outside the building is not attenuated correctly, most problematic in Vikenti night mode ;)

      You can't hard code footstep sounds into a building's assets. The sound you hear is dependent on where you are standing. Are you inside or outside? On which floor? Depending on that, the sounds will be different.
      That's why there needs to be a function written into the game's code that will compute the distance and elevation of the sound source and then apply the appropriate modifier to it.

      I love how Wacky explains problems and gives ideas for solutions but I don't think it's that simple. How do you determine what floor someone is on? I mean it sounds like for a simple two level house it should be a boolean i.e up or down. But what about stairs? where does one floor become another? By introducing a continuous function the problem would appear simpler but developing a sound function that also interacts with different textures among other things gets computationally expensive quickly. I mean this is coming from a web dev so I could be totally wrong though...

      The problem isn't sound design. Suppose they made footsteps above you sound like rubber ducks and they made footsteps below you sound like car horns. It doesn't make any difference what the footsteps sound like.
      The problem is getting the game to differentiate another player's vertical position in relation to you, and deciding whether or not it is appropriate to apply any sound adjustments.
      I'm not saying that it can't be done. But there is more to it than just mixing new sound effects.

      Probably because IRL most buildings most people are in they are wearing normal shoes and are not carrying a bunch of weapons and ammo on them while sprinting at the same time and probably cussing very loudly. IRL if you are wearing boots and sprinting with a 100+ pounds of equipment on you, you will be heard from 10+ floors below you. Although with bare feet maybe you would be heard only from 9 floors below. Then on top of all of that in PUBG the buildings they are in are probably built from cheap materials and have old wooden floors so it would be even louder.

    I don't play PUBG, but I do run a niche series on spatial audio in gaming so I watched your video, @WackyJacky101 . What you are referring to at 0:53 is known as "logarithmic rolloff" in HRTF terminology. A proper HRTF filter is supposed to take into account a distance model which filters out high-pitched frequencies (generally at the 5000Hz range) depending on how far away a sound is from the listener position. The OpenAL 1.1 specification details 6 of these, but the most common is "Linear Distance Rolloff".
    From the sound of the first two examples, a poorly-implemented distance model may be at fault in PUBG. However, the third example with sounds below the listener makes me wonder if the problem lies with the HRTF data itself. Recording vertical HRTF data is notoriously difficult due to limitations of microphone placement around a real human subject. However, with proper volume rolloff, the internal data is negligible. I've played Quake 1 and 2 source ports with OpenAL support and could easily tell where grenades bounced under the platform I was standing on even though the recorded HRTF data only goes to floor level microphones.
    I know this post will probably fall on deaf ears, but I hope whoever reads this can understand the situation with PUBG's audio better.

    I want to start by saying I agree, I like the sound after you adjusted it. However, I wanted to provide a tip for those that can't tell the difference until this is fixed... or isn't. If you couldn't tell, the footsteps from the person on the same level as you were really loud. As the person's position changes (1 or 2 floors above you) the footsteps are lower (lighter) depending on their height above you - so higher = lighter footsteps. The way to tell the difference if they are 2 stories above you or on the roof is by the echo effect. If you listen closely, when the person running is indoors, there is an echo (sounds like an empty hallway) in the audio. You don't hear this echo when they are on the roof.

    • @Snook_
      @Snook_ 5 років тому

      Pity the roof barely matters as they are so far away, the issue is the audio on the closer floors which is impossible to differentiate the games sound design is utter trash and pubg corp are in diabolical trouble with new games coming out and no answers. It is unacceptable after this long to have a game that honestly does NOT even pass beta testing it's a complete joke and they squandered an opportunity to create a legacy - Their only legacy now is memes of a terribly broken game. If they don't release PUBG 2.0 by a competent new seperate dev team from the break fix team recoded from scratch ASAP this will become the greatest gaming bubble in history that goes from hero to zero overnight. If I was an investor in PUBG when the numbers were looking good 1.5 years ago, after seeing how they deal with the game and the development lifecycle I would be jumping ship ASAP as they are doomed.

    @wackyjacky101 you are right the sound does need improvement and it is possible, but as someone who plays around in unreal engine as an novice its a little more complicated than just having different audio tracks. Im not an expert in audio in UE4 but from what I understand you have 1 audio file for foot steps and maybe different ones for different surfaces, you then have a invisible sphere that represents the max distance audio can be heard from and then in programming every frame, the distance you are from the audio will then be put through a software audio mixer to manipulate the sound and then sent to you and any other player in range. I guess the reason people on roofs sound louder than people on the third floor it that from a programming point of view is calculating the distance and the how many solid objects that sound is going through hence why it sounds louder because its only going through 1 wall.
    Hope this gives you a bit of context, love the channel 👍

    This is basic sound design.. And you've nailed it. Lower frequencies are easier to hear at distance than High. Also the further away from a sound source you get the less high frequencies are audable.. That's why when a plane goes overhead and away into the distance. It sounds like the pitch of the engine gets lower as it moves away. Blue balls are just lazy.. As you did with an eq or basic filtering they can easily recreate it

    • @IDrinkLava
      @IDrinkLava 5 років тому

      You don't need an EQ or basic filtering. If you look up Unreal Engine Sound Attenuation, you'll find an official reference page that lists the different types of sound rolloff and when they should be used (Attenuation NaturalSound is "Use case: Good for fires or other point-interest or high frequency content that the logarithmic attenuation does not feel 'right' for a sound's falloff.") Clearly whoever was in charge of PUBG's audio design did not read this page.

    • @wirosk2916
      @wirosk2916 5 років тому +2

      Well, isnt it yes and no on that one?
      Frequency dependant attenuation and doppler-effect are two different things?
      The pitch change when the airplane moving by is the doppler effect and the change of amplitude of specific frequencies are attenuation (which are dependant of the frequency, low frequncies travel further distance without loosing as much energy, as you said).

    my idea for stairs:
    you need to consider lows while running upon stairs. At the 1st floor lows are louder that the actual sounds of stepping but as you go up lows should get louder with stepping sounds but stepping sound should pass the lows after a point.

    • @SoundDesignTutorials

      It's impossible for a sound to get louder the further away it gets?

    The issue is so easily fixable. Unreal Engine actually has an equalizer built in. You can very easily boost lows, mids, and trebbles, even from C++ code. it's as easy as projecting the positions of the surrounding players on the y axis, substracting the vectors, and getting the magnitude to apply a different sound profile (litterally 3 values) to the footsteps depending on that magnitude. You can even lerp between a few profiles to have smooth sound transitions.

    I do understand why somebody running one floor up is louder though because in reality it's the same way. Your upstairs neighbors walking are sometimes louder than somebody inside your own apartment, so if they were running it would definitely be louder but still harder to pinpoint than on the same floor...
