TEST: Are SOUNDS BLOCKED OUT when many shots are fired? Footsteps & car horns -PUBG

- Investigating a claim that quickly skyrocketed to the pubg reddit forum. Gunshot sounds can, if many are fired simultaniously, block out footstep sounds.
Is it true or false? Here are the facts
Thanks to everyone who helped in this test
Music: Rameses B - Soul Essence

The main reddit thread that laid ground for this video was this: old.reddit.com/r/PUBATTLEGROUNDS/comments/8wf4cd/shroud_explains_why_sometimes_you_cannot_hear/
The vehicle honking horn test was done based on this: twitter.com/chocotaco/status/1007492871564427264?lang=en
WackyJacky101 this prove what shroud says is wrong
I like how you debunk all of shrouds claims immediately after he makes them.. LOL.. science is fun.
I don't know what causes it but I do know for a fact that from time to time some sounds just do not register. I've had squad mates who've fired single shots and killed without making a sound. I've had one instance of a car crashing mere inches behind a mate. I was the only person that heard it coming or even crash. And lastly there have been multiple scenarios where a guy sprinting close by makes no sound but that one is a bit harder to be sure of. A loud vehicle between three people in a quiet place however is unmistakable.
Just because things can't be reproduced in these tests doesn't mean they dont happen. There are way too many variables that can't be controlled in test
These tests leave out too many things. In a normal server there are people all over the place looting, shooting, driving vehicles, red zone, and all kinds of different things. I believe they all affect the performance of every match differently
Well the Google auto generated captions gunshots as Applause...lol
Anik Kundu murica
Sound like filosophy
Anik Kundu can't hear a player near you when a crowd is clapping in the audience lol
I feel like perhaps you would have better things to worry about when there's 30 people firing at the same time lol
Oh yeah? Like what?
Vahllon 30 people firing
War mode
Dragon Heart That's my point
Vahllon fps,stutter, unpleasant gameplay
Shroud - "Too many sounds block footsteps"
Wackyjacky101 - "This is an emergency test!!!"
From posting a reddit reply to posting a video in less than 24 hours... What a god!
Edit: Turns out Shrood is telling lies D:
RobotTree he said pubg can only play 3 sound files at once so if more than 3 people shoot, it will override footsteps and you wont be able to hear people walking near you
Its happened to me before where it almost has a grenade sound effect. everything will sound lower and harder to hear for a few seconds then it becomes normal again.
Classic redditors making up shit so they can blame anything other than themselves for their failures.
wasn't it chocotaco that said it? eitherway these dudes play it for 8 hours a day, they can tell pretty quickly when something is off
Choco has had gunshots blocked out by a car horn when the person was in his passenger seat shooting.
But there are numerous times when sound does not play
Even if sound was cut off, there wouldnt really be a scenario where 20+ ppl would be shooting at once
I don't know about shooting but sometimes I'm missing sounds. I see a guy running past me indoors and I hear nothing. He got in by opening the door, which I didn't hear either.
Same shii happens to me man. What the hell can it be??
Do you also have random lags, during which jumping is difficult? Like, I try to jump from one container to another, only to get teleported on the ground.
Yup i sometimes get teleported to ground while jumping from container to another.
@@JajeOdGuske those are lags, happened to me twice during peak hours.
funny part, is I also take off my shoes then I can sneak in better inside especially when someone is shooting or the red map bombing starts. LOL!
WackJack101 you missed a test! … first of all I want to say I love your videos, thanks for making them, they are mega useful and helpful for me. The test you missed out on though was the starting the car horn after the shots had started.
There is a very good chance, that because you started the car horn first, that sound got locked in and wouldn't be replaced by anything new.
It would be interesting to see what happens, when you attempt to sound the car horn, after the guns were shooting. If the game really does have a sound threshold. Then it's possible that with all those guns going off, the car horn wouldn't be heard, because it would be a new sound and there would be no space left for PUBG to play it.
PUBG Corp can pay you for doing quality bug hunting and testing.
nice idea
Wow..... so many friends on the map, great to see. And very well directed!
This just reiterates my feeling that Bluehole has no idea how to deal with cheaters or this phenomena is a glitch based on something besides just gun fire. I've personally experienced two gun fights this week where a third party sprinted, (according to the death cam they weren't walking), right up behind me for an easy kill. In all three I could hear my duo partner's footsteps but never once heard the approaching player's steps. I wish my PC could handle recording the video as at least once a week I experience this. I wouldn't even discount that it could be my brand of sound card or my Corsair headphones but its definitely not a myth from my experiences.
I thought they meant 3 different sound types. For example like, gunshots would be 1 category. car horn another. Then a 3rd sound introduced would be what Shroud is talking about. I could be wrong.
I think that is the problem shroud is talking about... not hundrets of people shooting at once, just make more sound queues. Shooting/horn/explosions/cars/maybe the plane.. etc. and then test it again.
Or maybe he's just salty because he doesn't always hear everything he wants to because there is a lot of auditory feedback in the game. If he can't perfectly hear an ant fart, its the game code not his lack of ability to hear it over ambient noises.
Well I am not as good as shroud.. not even close, but even I have those problems that I dont hear someone sneaking up on me, while in other situations I hear enemys literally Miles away! And tbh I dont have good hearing or a super great headset (g35).
And on the other Hand, the game isnt that great when it comes to coding...
oi blame your faults on game code when its just auditory overload on your own ears, go to a shooting range and ask people to fire at the same times while someone sprints through the parking lot, try to hear their steps
Ok lil shit. Like I said my hearing isnt that great (it isnt bad but well) The fact is the game is kinda broken, or explain me why my mate as example hears steps when we are BESIDE each other and I dont hear shit (no one is shooting no explosions NOTHING!) This happens way too often, when either ME or my MATE calls for steps when we are close by... You cant say the game is fine, when its not. (I mean sure YOU can but W/e) There are problems out there. In some situations you can hear a ministep while the plane flies over you and the redzone is ON YOU. And sometimes enemys are sprinting behind you and you hear nothing and there is also nothing that could potential cover the steps from the elephants that are running behind you...
Yeah. Sometimes, when I use a first aid, it will terminate some gunshots for a second then continue again. Very sure on this because theres this thing like an echo when shots are fired and if the shooter stops shooting, youll notice the echo but when i use a first aid, theres no echo. Maybe for others, the audio plays properly, on others people, it doesnt work.
Thanks for testing this! Looks like it was cozy at Georgopol Hospital.
In my experience, it seems to be that when there are multiple smokes going off, I sometimes don't hear footsteps, even if the smokes are far enough to be barely audible. I think that maybe instead of playing one long sound, smokes play many short sounds until they run out, and this can overload some buffer and force out other sounds. This may be a hardware or driver dependent bug, since cheaper/older gear may have smaller buffers.
Good grief, the gunfire! Im not sure ive ever heard anything that crazy even in war mode lol.
The big problem with footsteps is that even someone running towards you it's like 10m away you hear nothing, and then 5m away you suddenly hear them quite loud. I think you should faintly hear them from way longer when they run. And then it should be adjusted so walking makes a little less, and crouching even less.
Running is way too silent imo. Especially on Sanhok. It's not like you can't hear people run on grass when they have tons of gear clanking around. They did say they were enhancing sounds to also factor in how much you carry etc. though. So maybe that's coming.
Is it just me or when Jacky was testing out footsteps with HRTF ON and wrote that they're barely audible, I heard zero footsteps?
I think Imma test out HRTF OFF from now on. The game has been really crappy with sounds like footsteps. Can't hear shit sometimes
Was glad to be able to help with this video as one of the shooters. I got wondering though, how audible would footsteps be IRL if you had tons of guns firing only like 200m away? It would definitely be harder to hear just as it is in pubg... but could the gunfire possibly be far too loud to hear it all? or would it still be relatively easy to hear? How does pubg compare to real life?
I'm also wondering why you didn't also try testing at closer ranges. Probably one of the biggest complaints for not hearing footsteps is near the beginning of the game in hot drops like school or hacienda where you can have 20-30 people (and probably up to 10 firing at once) dropping within 50m of each other. 10 guns at 50m (or less) is probably louder than 30 guns at 200m.
footsteps in real life arent that loud lol... unless you have some fucked up shoes or trying to make noise with ur steps on purpose
For how skilled our characters are in vaulting, jumping, and combat, they should know how to move without sounding like an elephant.
idontkno I think if tons of guns are firing 200 meters away or less you wouldn't have ears anymore IRL X)
Madra everytime I play PUBG I feel like I'm a fucking terminator, making so much noise walking xD
I think that is because the claim was that sounds drowned out sounds, or overwrite, or block out sounds... the claim wasn't that range had anything to do with it. The claim was that only 3 sound files could play at once, and guns block out footsteps and car horns.
at 2:54 it is shoting instead of shooting. Ik, it's a small mistake, but just a tiny heads up. :)
Thank you Kanye , Very Cool!
Why do I get a feeling that the ones who complained about this is the guys who run with heavy sound compression to gain an advantage?
Nice video Wacky. Hope to see you in Berlin on sunday 29th.will wear one of your t-shirts if it arrives here on time 🙂 Keep up the hard work
1:40 Sounds like the average early game when you drop school...
Inaudibility of footsteps while many ppl shooting can be countered bu suppressors - that wont affect the amount of audio files played, but can lower the overall sound thus making footsteps audible. Pls upvote for the science.
I too saw the clip where shroud made the comment about the sounds, was kinda scratching my head since from game engine point of view this really did not make any sense. This ain't the 8 or 16bit era days. Thanks again jack and offcourse to all those that helped him to put this myth into the ground before it spreads and causing more tears.
This is why bootcamp so creepy at the first time
Notification squad
I would like to have sounds muted when gun shots/other loud noises are close enough to prevent audio equalization cheaters.
There is additional variable.
No shoes, sneakers, boots sound difference.
From slappy to freaking clickedy clack where you beg your team mate to take of those go* dam*** boots
Thanks Jacky, almost got deaf using HRTF
while I was playing the sound of the plane stopped while the plane was directly above me because approx 5 people were shooting at once
Seems to me the issues isn't some sounds not playing because shots are being fired, but the way sounds are prioritized relative to others in terms of loudness, HRTF mode or not. Gunshots should be relatively louder than footstep sounds, but that should decrease based on distance from each sound source. If you are right next to footsteps, you should hear them louder than a gunshot from 200-300 meters away. Even if it's not super realistic technically for the footsteps to be louder, the closer enemy is usually the most dangerous and for gameplay's sake, should be more audible I think.
Very informative video, keep up the great and professional tests!
Maybe it's because there's so much background noise that it just so happens to coincide with the footsteps timing perfectly and hides it. Maybe it's a new cheat option. Maybe it's because they can't seem to make this game work properly despite having a "top notch development team in Korea."*
*Not actual quote.
But the most annoyibg sound that could cancel all the sounds.. The airdrop plane. Damn that plane is so loud when I was at school the it went right above on the school where it is near making a really loud noise.
1:27 that guy was like fuck it let me conduct a test of my own-fall damage, and how to fuck did you manage to gather 30 armed guys in pubg who didn't kill each other as soon as the saw someone.
In real life, sound waves with bigger length and higher frequency will block out the shorter and smaller ones.
PUBG is striving forward to realism as much as possible so they got this feature right.
im with you man 👍
I don't think you would be able to hear your own footsteps in real life if you were being simultaneously shot at by 30 people.
Very interesting test, looks like I will be turning HRTF off from now on! Keep up the great content WackyJacky101!
Last month i try experementing the sound of pubg by turning on the 7.1 surround sound and comparing in i cant hear the footstep well. So i dont use that then i find the htrf in the settings so i turn off that, i find it that turning off the htrf can hear footstep very well
I find no difference in difficulty determining where shots are coming from with HRTF off or on, in fact I have a harder time judging the distance with it on since the shots are overly loud. Hearing footsteps nearby for me is certainly more important than a gun shot far off in the distance. Immediate threats > future ones.
Tinkering With Terrius in my experience i find it, easy to spot the enemy when shooting me a far when turning off htrf
when im shooting at somebody and someone sneaks up behind me i cannot hear his footstep, not even if he's running
Sometimes footsteps are not showing up in the game and I had a session lose sound all together.
Thanks for doing this , everyone thinks when shroud says something it's facts and he guesses on what he knows about the game in front of thousands of people he should get his facts straight
Instant Like ;D i always enjoy watching your videos ::D
Amazing Wacky! Thank you again :) love all your vids man, serious. Your effort is insane my friend! #loveit !
3:40 and the popcorn are ready
UE4 defaults to 32 audio channels, I don't know how many channels Bluehole use for PUBG but the more audio channels the higher the impact on system performance so I could imagine they may lower the channel count on lower spec systems.
Very nice video man. Could you in the next one test if the assault rifle attachments when attached on a dmr work the same way like sniper attachments.
There's a clip where choco is in a vehicle moving, chadd(?) is shooting out of the vehicle while the horn is going. Maybe you could recreate that?
I hope "Islands Of Nyne" or "Fear The Wolves" are going to be decent so this game can die at peace.
Stathis Kourt Pastrikos why even comment then? Go away. You're a sheep
nice video.. I heard shroud taking about this, but he said 3+ audio sources at once, like gunshots + car horn/driving + redzone or airdrop.. also maybe try with 100 players in the game instead of 30
no and i believe it doesnt matter how many ppl is shooting, the question is will the game cut off sound when too many different sounds is being played, i believe the game can handle more than 3, but how many?
ultimate test would be nades+shooting+driving+carhorn+redzone+airdrop+footsteps all going on at once, with 100 players in the game and ingame voice chat turned on
feels bad for the guy who fall from roof xD
This doesn't address the fact that footsteps sometimes do not play, without gunshots. No sound in game at all, clearly audible in replay or death cam.
I had an incident on Sanhok where I healed at a rock and got schot from behind. The bullets were hitting the rock and at the same time another enemy rushed me from the front. But I couldnt hear a single footstep from the rushing enemy. Probably its just sometimes..
Great Vid! Can you do it on Sanhock? That would be great as I have not heard footsteps I should have and it would be nice to know if I just need a hearing check :)
Shroud’s claims aren’t lies, i believe it’s because of the fact that if 30 ppl are shooting, LOGICALLY u won’t hear anything besides that
Should have used louder guns. M249 / all 😂
nathan sheeran 😂😂😂
Side X lol
nathan sheeran m
I noticed something after they introduced HRTF, and I want to ask you: Do you think HRTF is not only related to gunshots and is related to all sounds in the game (footsteps, ambient noise, car noise) ? What I noticed, is that the overall sound quality is degraded, while now, pointing where the sounds come from is more accurately, at the cost of lowering some volumes.
Who the hell give this vid thumbs down?
I just realize, unlike shroud who only showing off his skill, wackyjacky makes me walk "the walk".
Not all heroes wear capes, some just give a very useful video tutorial.
People who are not satisfied with the outcome, Chocos slip clearly shows he issue happening.
Because he failed to do the test right. Sound is normally fine in replays and while spectating. They bug out in live gameplay, which Wacky didn't test.
I believe he said that the sound was the same for live tests, he just chose spectator for the better camera work.
And I'm supposed to believe that just based off his word?
Sick camera movement
Enter Tain ““
A comparison between 44100hz and 48000hz would be cool alot of people say it better with 44100hz you apparently hear better
It sounded like you said, “Welcome Gays”. Lmao
That one person that fell in 1:28
Sounds like fireworks
I've had teams sneak right up on me even with only 4-6 guns shooting in the distance. I never heard the foot steps at all.
Ninja Racer get a better headset
You should do nades sounds it feels like smokes can block out footsteps
isnt pubg suppose to be "realistic"?? not able to hear footstep while shooting someone is realistic enough.
Agree
Oh boy. Another Rules of Survival ad.
Do more myth busters Please
I think theres a bug with foot steps cause i can hear it from 15meters away, and sometimes i can see the enemy coming in my direction and no footsteps even if hes running...
Thanx for your content, awesome as always.
When are you gonna make a video about the new sensitivity setting?😎
Dammit Shroud...
Can blueballs fuckin hire you already
It was a MASSWACRE!
Excellent content as always sir. An unrelated question if thats ok. is there a difference to DMR recoil when using the AR flash hider or the DMR flash hider? the wiki shows the values are the same. i often use an ar flash hider, so i can swap my one silencer on the fly, wondering if there is a penalty for using an off type attachment. thanks
I heard everything, even the steps when you say they are inaudible in the first footstep test. But maybe it's my ears or my equipment.. I can hear everything perfectly fine in this game which is why I believe Shroud and Choco's statements are bullshit. I am using Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250 Ohm headphones, Schiit Modi 2 DAC, Schiit Magni 3 Amp. But even before I got those pieces of equipment, I had no issue hearing footsteps over gun fire or vehicle sounds. One thing in common with those guys saying sounds are broken, is that they both use wireless headsets. Huge difference in audio quality there.. taking an audio stream, compressing it further, sending it over bluetooth, then relaying it. Doesn't really help at all.. just hurts the audio stream. Could be part of the problem.. just a problem I have never had.
Is this a new feature for sounds from the recent patch? Why did they put it in the first place if turning it off is way better?
Take that Shroud !
I mean most of the time in real life you won't hear footsteps if there's a bunch of other fucking loud noise going on near you like people shooting fucking guns
Guys, did they change the parachuting mechanics this patch? It feels kinda weird.
And what about Gunshots AND the a Horn in the distance?
It's interesting that you prefer to play with HRTF off. The tradeoff is not worth it?
this map doesn't have the issue that has been noticed.
I literally wont hear people walking up 5 meters behind me or a car flying past me 20 meters away on the Sanhok map. I can always hear walking and footsteps sounds on this map, car sounds have never been an issue.
Please re-test on the Sanhok map as this is a moot point on this map.
Try firing in the middle the room out of a window and see if the room suppresses the gunshot sound. Old Nazi snipers used this trick on soviets forces in WW2.
This is the basic concept of a suppressor. It also amplifies the sound of the gunshot for anyone inside the building, especially in the room.
Not sure why the left side guy jumped.
Make a video about positioning yourself in the final circles
Wacky can you do a video on the M24? That rifle makes no sense to me the bullets never seem to go where I'm aiming like the Kar98K does. Thanks.
This video really didn't prove anything. I play on both PC and Xbox One and I've had my audio replaced multiple times throughout games. Whether it was me shooting and it made the Plane completely silent, or me Driving and the Plane noise made the car completely silent. Just because you haven't witnessed it, doesn't mean it hasn't happen. It's like saying hackers don't exist because you haven't run into one...
This was so fun to be apart of haha!
I don't understand how replay mode is the same as live game. Not an accurate comparison in my view.
Otzdarva encountered this
Really nice work !!
wait a minute wtf HRTF is busted for directional hearing. When was this added?
Wacky you are on it mate!!
I wonder what happened in choco's clip then?
Xk. Which one??
twitter.com/chocotaco/status/1007492871564427264?lang=en
On squad if two or three more players are in a confined area shooting footsteps are really hard to hear i know because i rolled up on a four man team and killed three of them because they were all shooting and couldnt hear me running for them
How did you get everyone to shoot at the same time??
And gather around this place
Firecracker edition
i have used gun shots to push players since day 1
