One of my closest friends is actually a curator at the museum the Vanguard devs went to for their "research". The "not having iconic characters" thing shows just how detached the company really is from their franchise. Expect failure.
Yea because when you make a new game every year, it’s easy to make iconic characters in each franchise. They can’t use task force 141 in every game homie
@@clownbaby3877 The point was that they said COD has *NO* iconic characters. Who cares if they weren't in this COD.
They are very detached BUT to be fair, Given the context that statement was said and they were comparing it to Master Chief, they're right. CoD has no one that even remotely compares to Master Chief when it comes to iconic. Every gamer on the planet, whether they've actually played Halo or not, knows who Master Chief is and what franchise he's from.
CoD doesn't have anyone like that. You could show a non-CoD fan say...Captain Price and they'd have no idea who he is. He's just generic rugged soldier man number 1052.
@@Rawnblade13 Im not saying your wrong but I feel like captain price and his bravo six going dark is extremely iconic, same with mason and the numbers. The thing is going from older periods of war to advanced warfare then modern warfare, an just going back and forth with decades of war it’s hard to bring those iconic characters to every battle, that defeats the realism of the weapon mechanics and the storylines and all that. Master chief is known throughout each halo because it’s more fictional based.
Also I think a lot of people are forgetting that when vanguard came out, they had those worker strikes right after, they were upset because the lower people were being let go, and they’re wages were being used to give the more critical workers higher revenue. But people got upset and said that’s not right, then we were left with more workers that weren’t willing to put maximum effort into it because they’re not getting paid enough. The problem with vanguard is that they actually did try to use the community feedback to help create the game and make it a better experience for everyone.
@@mikegate6764 Iconic to a CoD fan, none of that reaches Master Chief levels of iconic though. Unfortunately for CoD, due to the realistic military setting, you can't really make a character with an iconic design and it's all just generic soldier stuff. Not to mention how due to constantly switching settings, CoD can't really establish someone as iconic as Master Chief. Which is probably why the devs on Vanguard went for some pseudo Avengers-style characters, even if it doesn't really work for WW2.
Master Chief works and has become iconic because he's in almost every Halo, has a unique, distinct, and easily recognizable design, and it probably doesn't hurt that Halo games don't come out every year, so they don't all blur together.
honestly, with how powerful modern consoles are and the large budget these companies have, there's no reason we can't large scale, multi-front campaigns and multiplayer like WaW. Show us events gaming rarely does like the Chinese front or Soviet invasion of Finland. People aren't necessarily over ww2, they're over the low effort and generic depiction of it.
100% true. We're sick of seeing this cookie cutter type shit everytime there's a ww2 game released.
Give us something unique and something unforgetable, something not taught in schools. More then anything, give us the fun that we've deprived for in the last couple years in the Call Of Duty franchise.

I hate cod vanguard as a historian. The STG44 firing mechanism is located in its stock, so how can you remove the stock and still fire the gun?! Gay German soldiers, heavy racism in the British army, and cursed weapons modification. It just insults history.
Don't ask Activision what the Nazis did to the one LGBT progressive clinic in Germany.
Dont forget guns in the wrong theatres, like Japanese guns on german trains or German guns in the Pacific
Not to mention the fact that you can just entirely remove the stock off of the MG42 and somehow the recoil spring doesn’t fall out of the gun.
Racism in the. British army.. Or any other.. Makes actual sense it's the 20th century.. But them making the British army... The German one.. Yeah agreed.. Wtf

So for those who are wondering initially Vanguard was not going to feature a zombies bonus mode at all as Treyarch was thrown into development only 6 months before release, however due to Treyarchs reputation and Activision threatening higher ups they conceded only 10 weeks prior to release and developed a very shoddy zombies game mode. The kicker is due to Vanguards (for once) unique take on the engine Cold War could NOT be used as a basis and Zombies had to be made from the ground up in just 10 weeks. This is the reason for so many features missing in the mode.

The thing about Cold War was they found a perfect operator system: there were operators, but they were exclusive to a specific side. They still had skins, but there wasn’t an operator on your team and an enemy operator with the same skin on the other.
MW 2019 actually did the same thing; Even had multiple sub-factions between the main mega-factions.
I think if you compare some of the lines from the older, good CoD campaigns and lines from this one, the difference in the care for writing a good story and well-written characters is clear.
Reznov (WaW): "Our grip tightens around the black heart of Berlin! The Fuhrer demands all to shed their last drop of blood in its defense. The old, the young, the weak.... If they stand for Germany, they die for Germany. Building by building, room by room! One rat at a time...."
Price (MW2): "History is written by the victors. History is filled with liars. If he lives, and we die, his truth becomes written... and ours is lost. Shepherd will be a hero. Because all you need to change the world is one good lie, and a river of blood. He's about to complete the greatest trick a liar ever played on history. _His_ truth will be _the_ truth. But only if he lives, and we die."
Makarov: (MW3): "The bigger the lie, the more likely people will believe it. And when a nation cries for vengeance, the lie spreads like a wildfire. The fire builds, devouring everything in its path. Our enemies believe that they alone dictate the course of history, but all it takes... is the will of a single man."
Menendez: (BO2): "Your life will be consumed by absolute loss. Then, and only then, will you understand what you have done to me. I will not kill you, boy. Now, like Woods, you suffer with me. And then, one day, you will see this pendant again. And you will remember everything you saw and felt tonight. And when you do, David... please, come to me."

I like how the zombies portal isn't even unique, it's straight up just a re-colored version of the one from Cold War
Thats not sledge hammers fault. Thats treyarches.
Wanna know something cool? There are still assets from COD2 in Black Ops 3, and probably Vanguard as well. Every COD game they share the new stuff with the other studios their library is insanely huge at this point. COD1 used some Return to Castle Wolfenstein assets but then with COD2 they forked the idtech 3 engine and put all their own assets. Oh here's another one- You know when you go to a door in Zombies and it says "This door is opened elsewhere..."? That script is leftover in the engine all the way back from Quake 1 circa 1996
its true
Yeah and that animation is actually from BO3. They really need to chill with the teleporting shit in zombies, it was cool when it was only between two related locations, not two random areas like a german city and shi no numa??
B2 , he never said shg was to blame or that. He just made an observation. Pretty simple.
1:34 Well, this aged badly...
35:20 made me crack up🤣
And of course the most notable would be Reznov lol. He is in like 5 different games lol. WaW, bo1, bo2 and one of the archetypes
@@-your-ordinary-skunk-7925 yeah without Reznov theres no BO1
Ah yes, I remember my grandpa telling me about a guy who used 10000% aim assist to take down an entire Japanese battalion.
History is so crazy like that.
That sucks. Frickin autoaim in the 40's. Hey, was your grandpa in my team of the enemy team?
You can't tell me that the dentist who killed 90 Japanese soldiers so his friends could retreat, who was found dead Borimir style in a pile of corpses, wasn't using hacks
And the dude was shot and stabbed by bayonets up to 26 times while still being alive.
This is not real "Aim assist" Is not a real thing. In real life you would have to aim weapon like with your eyes, not "aim assist"
@@connorhudock1950 I remember it like it was yesterday. D-day.. Storming the beach was insane. The anime, the green blue and red bullets flying around that sand? Damn it was crazy. I was also the only white guy on my boat, rest were indian, russian and british women with these Japanese weapons. It was a day that I will never forget.
Props to you for sitting through a game that doesn’t deserve anyones time

If the Act Man didn't make a review on this game, I honestly wouldn't be mad. I haven't played it but the footage I've seen convinces me I made the right call.
An alternate history COD actually sounds awesome. Could take some heavy inspiration from the man in the high castle and weave in multiple timelines.
I would actually like that sort of approach: Go full Wolfenstein or Man in the High Castle with crazy technology, a world where the Axis Powers won World War II, and a batshit insane story among other stuff. Best part is that, with such a wacky setting, they can do pretty much whatever they want art direction wise because you don't really need to care about historical accuracy when German mechs and plasma weapons are involved. They could even take some more direct inspiration from Man in the High Castle, particularly the TV series, by having the plot focus on the protagonist discovering a film that depicts a world where the Axis Powers lost World War II, (AKA the real world), and then believing that film to be a message from that world. If not that, stick to a Wolfenstein: The New Order type plot.
1:32 Well, that was a big fucking lie.
Understatement of the year
I'd like to add something onto this, Vanguard's "new" KotH-type mode was already done in DOOM 2016's multiplayer and there it was called Warpath, they legitimately just pulled it out of a better game.
Halo 5 had Roaming King as well by 2016
gears of war has had koth, and its been one of its most popular game modes, since its inception back in 2005.

Why hasn’t he done a video on COD4? Out of all the ones he’s made videos for, that one is certainly the most important in the entire franchise.
If I could like a comment 2 times for one time I would choose this one.
The “shoot nazi, they die” kind of lines sound like the writer actually thinks that wars are fought by just shooting the other side. No battle plans or strategic placement of assets. Just two sides with guns unloading magazines on each other…
That interview with the lady saying CoD has no memorable characters is just a sad reminder that the people who make important design decisions in games don't actually play them... which more often than not just translates to a game that is just out of touch with what made the series great originally, trend/profit chasing, and just disappoints existing fans entirely
Not only that, they don't care about the history, the entire story isn't even accurate, the "bloodiest war" isn't even shown to be bloody, the characters too are bland, no historical figures also shown.
Even as someone whose experience with CoD is only with WaW and BO3, I can say that she's just wrong. Price and Reznov come to mind.
*frank woods crying in a corner for "not being memorable"*
I haven't played a CoD campaign since BLOPS 1 and I can still remember at least 4-5 standout characters from MW1, MW2 and Black Ops 1. My cheeks are there no memorable characters lmao
Man even ghosts had Roarke
This guy is so spot on with cod it’s scary… the scarier part is, the devs won’t listen to him and continue to make the same crap over and over again.

We need a cod game set in vietnam with multiple characters, kinda like vanguard, like 1 person who is a marine FORECON, another person who is a MACV-SOG operator, a Green Beret, and an Army Ranger. The story would basically be set in 4 different areas, one in Tay Ninh, one in Khe Sanh, one in Hue City, and one in Da Nang. The MACV-SOG operator will be in Khe Sanh and Da Nang, the FORECON will be in Khe Sanh and Da Nang, The Green Beret will be in Tay Ninh and Khe Sanh, and the army ranger will be at Tay Ninh and Hue City.

Farah from MW: Hates General Barkov because of Russian forces invading her home country, killing her mother and father, enslaving her and her brother, watching her friend die and being oppressed for years by a tyrannical government.
Polina from Vanguard: “I sHoOt NaZiS. tHeY dIe. ThAtS mY pLaN”.
Dat be fax
And also Farah's story is very believable and fitting to a modern timeline with armed struggles and US fucking up countries like Niger Syria Afghanistan and what not, and Urzikstan was a fictional middle eastern country so yeah, And ofc the Americans "can't be" the BAD GUYS and it has to be a generic Russian, but thats light years better than a multinational task force in WW2 5v1000ing a German interrogation and concentration camp.

It always astounds me how AAA titles have like zero scope when it comes to WWII, even after over 20 years of the genre being around. Like literally have a conflict that spanned for 6 years on almost every continent of the world, but if you ask a activision employee the conflict took place from 1942 to 1944 in France and Russia. Activision had the balls to let you play as a mass shooter almost 15 years ago, but they still don't have the balls to let you play as the Germans in a cod campaign.
same with not having a swastika any more and only having the iron cross, because that's apparently "offensive." So if you're able to play a game rated M for "mature", why is some logo on a flag going to offend you? COD used to be so good, the last good COD game was black ops, which came out in 2010, and actually had swastikas in zombies. Everything now is a bunch of woke garbage. They're definitely was black women enlisted as US Marines storming an island in the south pacific killing Japanese soldiers... totally.
@@internetuser8371 Yah, the irony of the entire thing is really palpable, ever since "the nuke" in cod 4, cods thing has been being edgy and going for shock value. 5 you got to see serious war crimes committed by all sides, MWII you had the airport massacre, black ops you had the reznov twist, etc, somewhere along the way though they became a lot more politically conscious but at the same time tried to keep the edginess and gritiness of the past games, so the entire thing just becomes a convoluted cringy mess as a result.
I would love if they just went back to the basics of like the first 3 COD games and just dropped the plot and even characters for that matter, and just had you play through set pieces that actually happened during the war and that we have never got to see, like playing as the finnish during the winter war, or the poles trying desperately to fend off the german blitzkrieg (and then later playing as free polish forces in italy) or how about you follow a group of german soldiers from barborrosa and show everything gradually go to shit for them. The possibilities are literally endless, but we only see the same recycled stuff again and again. EA was "slightly" better with battlefield I guess, featured norway and a tiny section where you were able to play as a tiger tank crew.
@@internetuser8371 it's just bullshit. The swastika was everywhere in Wolfenstein and nobody cared.
It's even more baffling how they keep portaying the red scum as "the good guys".
I've always wanted to have the German perspective
I mean this as a dig at Activision and not The Act Man:
It was genuinely hard to finish this video because at certain points I couldn't stand to listen and see some things that aren't/are in my once beloved Call of Duty
I had to come back 3 different times just cause the zombies and multi-player were so mind numbing
@Gabriel Contreras definitely not. Dead means you literally can’t find a lobby.
You know what I’d like to see? A cod game set in the l Chinese theatre. With the Indian, Australian and Chinese armies in 1937. We could see the flying tigers and such
My Grandfather barely made it out of Okinawa alive. He was in the middle of building a bridge under heavy Enemy Team fire, when a member of the Enemy Team ran up and stabbed him with a sledgehammer. He barely survived and now has a crippling fear of sledgehammers to this day.
The vanguard grenade emote where the guy has his hands on his head is the exact same emote from Junkrat. They are not only recycling shit from older cods but they are also recycling from their other games.
i wish they'd at least draw inspiration from their GOOD games

Definitely one of the worst regimes in history, the enemy team, is really well portrayed in this game by showing the atrocities committed against the my team
It really shows great respect to the victims of the war crimes of Enemy Leader and Enemy Team

Luckily we have my leader who can lead us to my team’s victory.
Anyone who got a problem with my team is a racist bigot.
It's weird, I need answers. In multiplayer, it's my team versus enemy team, but in single player, I'm playing as enemy team. So... is it supposed to be symbolic that we are all the same? That war... War never changes?

My least favorite thing that’s happened with recent cod multiplayer lobbies is you never play with the same lobby twice. It’s new people everytime. I understand why because when people have different modes selected for queue you can’t have them all play TDM if they have four other modes selected.
