Hello Nath & Johnny [ The Break Down with Nath & Johnny ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This music video is the 1st single released in advance from their upcoming studio album Yesterwynde (2024), featuring Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, .and (at the end) Troy Donockley, multi-instrumentalist and singer.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Tuomas purposely put Floor's vocals lower in the mix than usual. The music was awesome, and Floor was just another instrument in this one. She did have a couple parts where the music was pulled back. One of my favorites (most are my favorites) is "Storytime" live at the Wacken 2013 festival. It's really cool that you made a video about Nightwish! I love it!
They've focused on more humanistic themes since their 2015 album and some fans didn't like this direction. Nightwish has always been known for making songs about fantasy, Disney and so on. But these are themes that have always been present in the band's discography and in 2000 they made a song about the Columbine attack, for example.
I highly recommend the band's latest album, Human Nature, it has a more raw sound, without so many orchestral pieces, but it's an excellent album to start with.
My three favorite songs are:
The Greatest Show on Earth - An almost 30-minute song about everything in the universe with a reference to Metallica!
Gethsemane - From the second album, with the original vocalist
Shoemaker - One of the band's best songs, it's about a geologist who had his ashes thrown on the moon!
Go watch 'Ghost Love Score' live at Wacken 2013. You'll be amazed.
Also, 'Storytime' and the video for theor previous single, 'Noise'.
The chord progression of the verse instantly makes me think of Phantom of the Opera.
Man, I love metal, but I have never really been able to get into bands like Nightwish.
I went through a Nightwish binge 4-5 yrs ago. Nightwish fans are like Tool fans if you know what I mean - I'm both for the record. Anyway, my 3 favorite songs are 3 Everdream 2 End of all hope 1 Ghost love score (live at Wacken).
When you first started I thought, here we go,these two are going arse about and talk all through it. But actually you did a really good reaction. You made some good observations (everyone has complained about the mix, I hope they remaster it) and a good analysis.
This is bit of a strange one for an introduction to Nightwish. Their studio songs tend to be very epic and intricate but to get a better flavour of the band you really need to listen to them live. If you like your metal a bit more straight forward then react to “Romanticide” live from Waken 2013.
You really should check them out further, you won’t be disappointed.

Every rxn I’ve seen to this video has immediately brought up the issue with the equalization of the chorus, so I assume it’s something either on YT’s end or was deliberate.
According to a comment on Nik Nocturnal's reaction, it's supposedly deliberate to make her "part of the chorus".
They wanted the feel of a choir of ancestors singing from the past vibe.

Guys the sound is ment to be thar way! It's one of the ways of Tuomas, the keyboardist and main composer, to encompass the hole humanity in the song, it's like he is telling the story os all of us, that's why floor's voice is mixed with the instruments and choir at almost the same "volume" it's a sense of unity, we are all singing the song about our ancestors
It's interesting, but it's not for me, cool to experience with you guys for the first time though!

I love Nightwish perfume of the timeless it’s an ok song the vocals from Floor was buried in the mix they had lineup changes like tarja she left right after the end of an era Annette came in during the dark passion play and then left during the imangarmium tour and then floor came in then Marco the bass player left in 2021 or 2022 and they have a new bass player.
There is a LOT going on in the mix - some of it is barely audible unless you play it at a healthy volume. (Which, incidentally, brings Floor's vocals a bit more forward.)

Hey there, you fine young gentlemen. absolutely love Nightwish, been listening to them for 25 years! it's unfortunate that Floor's vocals seem so monotone! she is an extraordinarly gifted vocalist! so hearing that Thomas purposely did that, is a little disturbing to me. i have a feeling his ego for composing music is starting to out weigh vocal composition!

Floor cannot be understood what she is singing in the symphonic pieces, her voice is suppressed far too much.
Tuomas is very repetitive with his compositions. It seems to have been put together in what he has been making for years.
And it seems that you'r wery repititivy because you use the same comment ower and ower again 😏
